Through its use 34 elements can be determined simultaneously in one sample, which may be a rock, soil, mineral, or an ore. For many of these elements concentration ranges from one to ten thousand parts per million (0.0001 to 1 percent) or more can be investigated (see table 1). The modification in the method is the addition of 20mg of a CaCO<sub>3</sub>-graphite mixture (1:5) on top of the sample-graphite powder. This addition gives a smoother burning arc and minimizes sample loss during arcing, so that the former variability of results is also minimized. The improved procedure has been tested in a truck-mounted spectrographic laboratory constructed and used by the U. S. These methods are not applicable for regulated streams or for small-drainage areas (in general, less than 100 square miles). The determination of the magnitude of a flood of a selected frequency in the two-state area is accomplished by the use of composite frequency curves for 2 flood regions and curves showing variation of mean annual flood with drainage area for 9 hydrologic areas and 10 main-stem streams.</p>\n<p>These curves are based on all flood data collected in North and South Dakota with some use made of records from adjoining states. These data are tabulated in the report.</p>\n<p>Also included in the report is a tabulation of maximum flood experiences at gaging stations and outstanding floods at many miscellaneous The measurement program was begun on its present scale in the latter part of 1948 by the U. S. Geological Survey at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation and has been continued under a cooperative agreement with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency since July 1, 1949, under which each agency pays half the cost of the investigation.</p><p>The purpose of the program is to obtain factual data to assist in determining what effect, if any, the inflow of ground water into Tecolote Tunnel will have on surface-water resources in the vicinity of the tunnel. The area involved in the program, shown on plate 1, was made large enough to include a number of springs and streams believed to be outside the zone of influence of the tunnel. Tecolote Tunnel, completed in March 1956, was built by the Bureau of Reclamation for the purpose of conveying water from Cachuma Reservoir to the city of Santa Barbara and adjacent coastal communities. The alinement of the tunnel is essentially north and south through the center of a region that extends from the Painted Cave area on the east to Refugio Pass on the west and from the Santa Ynez River on the north to the Pacific Ocean on the south. Storage, in Cachuma Reservoir began November 16, 1952.
