The Penman-Monteith model, a one-component model designed for use with dense crops, is not sufficiently accurate (r2 = 0.56 for hourly data and r2 = 0.60 for daily data). The Shuttleworth-Wallace model, a two-component logical extension of the Penman-Monteith model for use with sparse crops, performs significantly better (r2 = 0.78 for hourly data and r2 = 0.85 for daily data). The modified Priestley-Taylor model, a one-component simplified form of the Penman potential evapotranspiration model, surprisingly performs as well as the Shuttle worth-Wallace model. The overall theme for this meeting was a recurring one: “The Integration of Research into National Park Service Resource Management Decisions.” The conference was held at the University of California, Davis, on 10-12 September 1991 and was sponsored by the National Park Service Cooperative Park Studies Unit and the Institute of Ecology at the University of California, Davis.
\n
\n
This proceedings highlights a variety of research and resource management efforts to improve the stewardship of our most treasured landscapes. In the future, it will become increasingly more important for federal and state agencies, university scientists and students, and the public to cooperate fully to improve the quantity and quality of science and resource management programs in units of the National Park System. As many of the papers in this proceedings attest, we must look beyond the political boundaries of protected landscapes to incorporate entire ecosystems. Competing resource uses inside and outside parklands must be reexamined to weave a common thread of biological conservation. As scientists, our studies must bridge the gap from plots to landscapes and from landscapes to regions. Our studies must built on information from species and populations to ecosystems and the processes that influence them. The papers in this proceedings are modest but important contribution to those ideals. Each paper represents original research and has been peer-reviewed.
\n
\n
Many agencies, institutions, and individuals contributed in the development of this product. In the planning stages, National Park Service Western Region scientists provided advice and assistance in structuring the conference format. University of California, Davis, graduate students, directed by Sharon Lynch, assisted with logistics at the meeting, and provided general assistance with the paper sessions. We thank the students, technicians, and support staff who labored unselfishly behind the scenes to collect data and transfer information important to the completion of each paper.
\n
\n
Financial support for this publication was provided with funds from the Western Region Resource Management and Resource Program and the Washington Office Servicewide Publications Program of the National Park Service. We thank Denny Fenn, Stan Albright, Bruce Kilgore, Dave Cherry, Gene Hester, and Donna O'Leary of the National Park Service and Charles Goldman of the University of California, Davis, Institute of Ecology for their support throughout the development of the proceedings.
\n
\n
Finally, we are entering into a new age of research in the U.S. Department of the Interior. Recently, plans were announced for the creation of the National Biological Survey, dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of research necessary for the wise stewardship of our natural resources and wildlands. We welcome our new partners and pledge our full support to both the new and old agencies. The papers presented here--and past research efforts in national parks--provide an important stepping stone to the future. While many of us will be transferred administratively to the National Biological Survey, our emotional ties to the National Park Service mission of preserving resources for future generations will remain with us forever.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cooperative Park Studies","publisherLocation":"Davis, CA","usgsCitation":"Veirs, S.D., Stohlgren, T., and Schonewald-Cox, C., 1993, Proceedings of the fourth conference on research in California's National Parks, 132 p.","productDescription":"132 p.","numberOfPages":"132","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295162,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5437a3cee4b08a816ca63684","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Veirs, Stephen D. Recent advances in geographic information system (GIS) technology have created new opportunities for maintaining and integrating extensive spatial databases for applications in seismic hazard analysis. Ground motion data and damage distributions from past earthquakes are combined with GIS databases of geologic information to prepare preliminary maps for inferring input ground motion levels for earthquake resistant design. Maps of bedrock elevation, surface topography, and surface geology are used to develop maps of soil thickness and predominant period. Ground motion attenuation relationships are used to create maps estimating ground shaking intensity for a uniform ground condition. Relationships between geologic characteristics, ground motion amplification, and earthquake intensity are used to produce amplification capability maps. Estimated ground shaking for the uniform ground condition is combined with amplification capability to develop maps predicting regional ground shaking intensity. Paleontological evidence exists for considerable resedimentation, which we attribute to the fact that Hole 807C is located in a basement graben. Age estimates based on planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy, as well as magnetostratigraphy, indicate that sedimentation rates could have been on the order of 12-14 m/m.y. This is significantly higher than those documented in other important Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and ODP Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary sections using the same age control points (e.g., DSDP Hole 577 and ODP Hole 690B), although not as high as those documented from DSDP Hole 524. The expanded nature of this succession has resulted in the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary δ 1 3C decrease occurring over approximately a 9-m interval. Ir analysis of these sediments do not show a single large anomaly, as has been found in other Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary sections, but trivial background levels instead. Comparisons of petrographic, palynologic, and paleobotanic data gathered from the same sample sets from a single column of the Stockton coal bed indicate that compositional correspondences among the sets exist regardless of coal type. Some correspondences are believed to exist because of original plant constituents and others because of the paleoenvironment of peat formation. Using some combination of these data is critical when interpreting paleoenvironmental conditions because (1) a direct correspondence is lacking between many of the data and (2) each of the three data sets provides a unique and important perspective on the paleomire. The Stockton paleomire in the area of this study supported a diverse flora that consisted of both small and arboreous lycopsids, small ferns and tree ferns, calamites, cordaites, and pteridosperms. There appear to have been two successions of Lycospora spore-dominated, vitrinite-rich, liptinite-poor peat formation, which were followed by inertinite-rich peat formation marked by a tree fern-dominant spore assemblage and abundant unidentifiable plant tissues. These are interpreted to be two water-laden or topogenous peat formational stages followed by slightly domed, better drained peat formation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0146-6380(93)90034-9","usgsCitation":"Pierce, B., Stanton, R., and Eble, C.F., 1993, Comparison of the petrography, To date, studies have been conducted for GNP west of the Continental Divide (Barrett et al. 1991), roughly half of the total park area. These and other fire history studies in the Northern Rockies (Arno 1976, Sneck 1977, Arno 1980, Romme 1982, Romme and Despain 1989, Barrett and Arno 1991, Barrett 1993a, Barrett 1993b) have shown that fire history data can be an integral element of fire management planning, particularly wen natiral fire plans are being developed for parks and wilderness. The value of site specific fire history data is apparent when considering study results for lodgepole pin (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests. Lodgepole pine is a major subalpine type in the Northern Rockies and such stands experiences a wide range of presettlement fire patterns. On relatively warm-dry sites at lower elevations, such as in GNP's North Fork drainage (Barrett et al. 1991), short to moderately long interval (25-150 yr) fires occurred in a mixed severity pattern ranging from non-lethal underburns to total stand replacement (Arno 1976, Sneck 1977, Barrett and Arno 1991). Markedly different fire history occurred at high elevation lodgepole pine stands on highly unproductive sites, such as on Yellowstone National Park's (YNP) subalpine plateau. Romme (1982) found that, on some sites, stand replacing fires recurred after very long intervals (300-400 yr), and that non-lethal surface fires were rare. For somewhat more productive sites in the Absaroka Mountains in YNP, Barrett (1993a) estimated a 200 year mean replacement interval, in a pattern similar to that found in steep mountain terrain elsewhere, such as in the Middle Fork Flathead River drainage (Barrett et al. 1991, Sneck 1977).
\n
\n
Aside from post-1900 written records (ayres 1900; fire atlas data on file, GNP Archives Div. and GNP Resources Mgt. Div.), little fire history information existed for GNP's east-side forests, which are dominated primarily by lodgepole pine. In fall 1992, the park initiated a study to determine the fire history of the Missouri River drainage portion of southeastern GNP. Given the known variation in pre-1900 fire patterns for lodgepole pine, this study was seen as a potentially important contribution to GNP's Fire Management Plan, and to the expanding data base of fire history studies in the region. Resource managers sought this information to assist their development of appropriate fire management strategies for the east-side forests, and the fire history data also would be a useful interactive component of the park's Geographic Information System (GIS). Primary objectives were to: 1) determine pre-1900 fire periodicities, severities, burning patterns, and post-fire succession for major forest types, and 2) document and map the forest age class mosaic, reflecting the history of stand replacing fires at the landscape level of analysis. Secondary objectives were to interpret the possible effects of modern fire suppression on area forests, and to determine fire regime patterns relative to other lodgepole pine ecosystems in the Northern Rockies.
","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Barrett, S.W., 1993, Fire history of southeastern Glacier National Park: Missouri River Drainage, 43 p.","productDescription":"43 p.","numberOfPages":"43","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295021,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Glacier National Park","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"543500a7e4b0a4f4b46a2395","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barrett, Stephen W.","contributorId":32848,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barrett","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

With notable exceptions, SG decreases from values generally greater than 2.7 in the west to less than 2.6 over a few small areas of high‐silica, high‐potassium granites near the east edge. A good correlation between measured SG and analyzed weight percent SiO2 enables estimation of average silica variations across the batholith. The average SG is 2.69 corresponding to an average of 68 wt. % SiO2 for the 18,000 km² central part of the batholith.

A 1‐km gridded version of the SG measurements has been used to generate a series of synthetic gravity maps, assuming that the SG of rocks at the surface extends unchanged to various depths. The synthetic map computed for a depth of 10 km shows the best correspondence with the isostatic residual gravity map indicating that variations in the observed gravity residuals are largely caused by SG variations of the plutonic rocks exposed at the surface that apparently extend downward to an average depth of about 10 km.

Although the 10‐km synthetic gravity map gives the best overall fit to the observed gravity data, comparison of individual anomalies indicates that the bottoms of the plutons as defined by SG variations at the surface are generally shallower along the west edge of the Sierra Nevada (7±2 km) and deeper in the younger and more felsic eastern part (12±3 km). These depths do not necessarily represent a distinct base of the Sierra Nevada batholith. They may indicate the depth below which density homogenization occurs, either by igneous, or possibly, structural processes.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/93GL01379","usgsCitation":"Oliver, H., Moore, B., and Sikora, R.F., 1993, Internal structure of the Sierra Nevada batholith based on specific gravity and gravity measurements: Geophysical Research Letters, v. 20, no. 20, p. 2179-2182, https://doi.org/10.1029/93GL01379.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"2179","endPage":"2182","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371333,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Sierra Nevada batholith","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.08056640625,\n              36.13787471840729\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.94921874999999,\n              36.13787471840729\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.94921874999999,\n              38.272688535980976\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.08056640625,\n              38.272688535980976\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.08056640625,\n              36.13787471840729\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"20","issue":"20","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2012-12-07","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Oliver, H.W.","contributorId":16703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Oliver","given":"H.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":779657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, Bryan bmoore@usgs.gov","contributorId":2417,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Bryan","email":"bmoore@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":779658,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sikora, R. Contaminants in the many waste sites on the ORR\ninclude heavy radioactive isotopes as well as many organic and inorganic compounds.\nThe locations, geometry, and contents of many of these waste sites are reasonably well\nknown, while others are poorly known, and some may be unknown. To better\ncharacterize the known sites and locate and characterize additional environmentally\nhazardous sites, a two-phase aerial survey of the ORR was begun in April, 1992. Phase\nI, which began in April, 1992, consisted of aerial radiation, multispectral scanner, and\nphotographic surveys. Phase II, which began in November, 1992 and is described in this\npresentation, consisted of a helicopter electromagnetic (HEM), magnetic, and radiation\nsurvey. Targets of the survey were both man-made (drums, trench boundaries, burn pits,\nwell heads) and geologic (fractures, faults, karst features, geologic contacts).\nThe Phase II survey has three components: testing, reconnaissance, and high-resolution\ndata acquisition. To date, the testing and reconnaissance data acquisition have been\ncompleted, and part of the data have been processed. They indicate that: 1) magnetic\nand HEM data are complementary, and do not always highlight the same anomaly; 2)\nunder favorable circumstances, helicopter magnetometer systems are capable of detecting\ngroups of 4 or more 55-gallon drums at detector altitudes of 15 m or less, 3) HEM data\nprovide data which compare favorably with surface data collected over burial trenches, 4)\nwell casings seem to be related to magnetic monopole anomalies, as would be expected,\n5) Changes in EM and magnetic anomaly character are related to lithologic changes and\nmight be used to track contacts between known outcrops.","largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Symposium on the Application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems: SAGEEP '93","conferenceTitle":"Symposium on the Application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems: SAGEEP '93","conferenceDate":"1993-04-18T00:00:00","conferenceLocation":"San Diego, CA","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society","publisherLocation":"Englewood, CO","usgsCitation":"Doll, W., Nyquist, J.E., Labson, V., and Pellerin, L., 1993, Preliminary results of a helicopter electromagnetic and magnetic survey of the Oak Ridge Reservation, Tennessee for environmental and geologic site characterization, p. 281-295.","productDescription":"p. 281-295","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":282705,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","otherGeospatial":"Oak Ridge Reservation","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -84.436334,35.876924 ], [ -84.436334,36.064688 ], [ -84.157739,36.064688 ], [ -84.157739,35.876924 ], [ -84.436334,35.876924 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6dbce4b0b29085105566","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doll, W.E.","contributorId":69024,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doll","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":490890,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nyquist, Jonathan E.","contributorId":101801,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nyquist","given":"Jonathan","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":34225,"text":"Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa.","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":490889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Labson, V.F.","contributorId":20506,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Labson","given":"V.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":490888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Pellerin, L.","contributorId":94073,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pellerin","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":490891,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The objective of the National Geo-Data Policy Forum was to examine policies related to the evolution and use of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). A second goal was to identify issues concerning spatial data technology and its use by all citizens. Policy makers from the public and private sectors offered ideas on the myriad issues and questions related to the NSDI and learned of concerns that their organizations must address. The links that connect the NSDI to the Clinton Administration's National Information Infrastructure were identified and discussed. The forum offered participants an opportunity to define the NSDI's role in carrying out technology policy.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Federal Geographic Data Committee, U.G., 1993, National Geodata Policy Forum: present and emerging U.S. policies governing the development, evolution, and use of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure: summary report: General Information Product, vi, 26 p.; Appendices.","productDescription":"vi, 26 p.; Appendices","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261491,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/confpub/70039257/report.pdf"},{"id":261492,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/confpub/70039257/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a61e1e4b0c8380cd71bf2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Federal Geographic Data Committee, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":25810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Federal Geographic Data Committee","given":"U.S.","email":"","middleInitial":"Geological Survey","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":465877,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of the\ngeophysical surveys was to determine the subsurface distribution of buried\nmetallic objects within the landfill.\nDifferent geophysical techniques were evaluated along a test line to determine\ntheir relative effectiveness at this site. The geophysical methods included\ntotal magnetic field, vertical magnetic gradient, VLF, horizontal and vertical\ncoplanar electromagnetic, GPR and seismic refraction.\nMagnetic and coplanar electromagnetic (EM) methods were chosen to survey the\nentire landfill because they easily detected magnetic and conductive sources and\nhave better anomaly resolution than other methods evaluated, as demonstrated by\nthe test line results. In addition, these methods are rapid and cost effective\nfor surveys involving a large number of measurements.\nSurveys of the landfill identified numerous magnetic and conductive anomalies\nindicating the presence of buried metallic objects. The vertical gradient and\nEM measurements indicate that several of the large total field anomalies are\nproduced by groups of smaller objects rather than by single, large buried\nsources. Many of the smaller anomalies are associated with the position of a\nrecently dismantled railroad track and result from iron and steel parts buried\nalong the abandoned grade.\nTwo long, narrow conductive anomalies were identified by the electromagnetic\nsurveys. These conductive features have no surface expression and apparently run\nthe length of the landfill. The EM data indicates these conductors are narrow\nand relatively shallow. One conductor is relatively magnetic, the other\nconductor has no magnetic signature suggesting a different composition.\nThe geophysical surveys determined that large areas of the landfill are\nrelatively free of buried metal due to the lack of observed magnetic or\nconductive anomalies. The geophysical data also suggests the landfill may be\nlarger than originally thought. Numerous magnetic and conductive responses were\nobserved beyond the eastern edge of the present landfill in an area thought to\nbe natural terrain.","largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the symposium on the application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems: SAGEEP '93","conferenceTitle":"6th EEGS Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems","conferenceDate":"1993-04-18T00:00:00","conferenceLocation":"San Diego, CA","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Horton, R., Busby, J.W., Powers, M.H., and Knoshaug, R.N., 1993, Landfill mapping using multi-disciplinary geophysical techniques at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, p. 109-128.","productDescription":"p. 109-128","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":285146,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","city":"Colorado Springs","otherGeospatial":"U.S. Air Force Academy","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -104.898664,38.958696 ], [ -104.898664,39.023096 ], [ -104.833061,39.023096 ], [ -104.833061,38.958696 ], [ -104.898664,38.958696 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"535594a9e4b0120853e8c040","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Horton, Robert 0000-0001-5578-3733 rhorton@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5578-3733","contributorId":612,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Horton","given":"Robert","email":"rhorton@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":492148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Busby, John W.","contributorId":85088,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busby","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":492150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Powers, Michael H. 0000-0002-4480-7856 mhpowers@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4480-7856","contributorId":851,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Powers","given":"Michael","email":"mhpowers@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":492149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Knoshaug, Ronald N.","contributorId":104812,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knoshaug","given":"Ronald","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":492151,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

To effectively monitor and predict these beach changes, accurate measurements of beach morphology incorporating both shore-parallel and shore-normal transects are required. Although it is possible to monitor beach dynamics using land-based surveying methods, it is generally not practical to collect data of sufficient density and resolution to satisfy a three-dimensional beach-change model of long segments of the coast. The challenge to coastal scientists is to devise new beach monitoring methods that address these needs and are rapid, reliable, relatively inexpensive, and maintain or improve measurement accuracy.
\n
The adaptation of Global Positioning System (GPS) surveying techniques to beach monitoring activities is a promising response to this challenge. An experiment that employed both GPS and conventional beach surveying was conducted, and a new beach monitoring method employing kinematic GPS surveys was devised. This new method involves the collection of precise shore-parallel and shore-normal GPS positions from a moving vehicle so that an accurate two-dimensional beach surface can be generated. Results show that the GPS measurements agree with conventional shore-normal surveys at the 1 cm level, and repeated GPS measurements employing the moving vehicle demonstrate a precision of better than 1 cm. In addition, the nearly continuous sampling and increased resolution provided by the GPS surveying technique reveals alongshore changes in beach morphology that are undetected by conventional shore-normal profiles. The application of GPS surveying techniques combined with the refinement of appropriate methods for data collection and analysis provides a better understanding of beach changes, sediment transport, and storm impacts.
","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education & Research Foundation","publisherLocation":"Ft. As part of an Interagency Agreement between the EPA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the USGS prepared radon potential estimates for the United States. The purpose and intended use of these reports is to help identify areas where states can target their radon program resources, to provide guidance in selecting the most appropriate building code options for areas, and to provide general information on radon and geology for each state for federal, state, and municipal officials dealing with radon issues. The booklets are organized by EPA Federal boundaries (Regions) with chapters for each state. Each state chapter discusses the state's specific geographic setting, soils, geologic setting, geologic radon potential, indoor radon data, and a summary outlining the radon potential rankings of geologic areas in the state.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr93292","usgsCitation":"1993, Geologic radon potential of the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-292, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93292.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":481268,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Schumann, R. We developed models for 78 and 100 wolves. For each wolf population, we ran scenarios using wolf predation rates of 9, 12, and 15 ungulates/wolf/year.  With 78 wolves and the antlerless elk harvest reduced 27%, our modeled elk population estimated were 5-18% smaller than the model estimate without wolves.  With 100 wolves and the antlerless elk harvest reduced 27%, our elk population estimated were 11-30% smaller than the population estimates without wolves.  Wolf predation effects were greater on the modeled mule deer population than on elk.  With 78 wolves and no antlerless deer harvest, we predicted the mule deer population could be 13-44% larger than without wolves.  With 100 wolves and no antlerless deer harvest, the mule deer population was 0-36% larger than without wolves.  After wolf recovery, our POP-II models suggested moose harvests would have to be reduced at least 50% to maintain moose numbers at the levels predicted when wolves were not present.  Mule deer and moose population data are limited, and these wolf predation effects may be overestimated if population sizes or male-female ratios were underestimated in our population models.  We recommend additional mule deer and moose population data be obtained.","largerWorkTitle":"Ecological issues on reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone National Park","language":"English","publisher":"National Park Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Mack, J., and Singer, F.J., 1993, Using Pop-II models to predict effects of wolf predation and hunter harvests on elk, mule deer, and moose on the northern range, 26 p.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"49","endPage":"74","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295110,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Montana, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5437a3dfe4b08a816ca636ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mack, John A.","contributorId":102818,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mack","given":"John A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502952,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Singer, Francis J.","contributorId":67026,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Singer","given":"Francis","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502951,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In 1986, major changes began to occur in this area. Fast ice melted and several icebergs calved from the base of the iceberg tongue and the terminus of Thwaites Glacier. The iceberg tongue rotated to an east-west orientation and drifted westward. Between 1986 and 1992, a total of 140 km of drift has occurred. Computed potable water recovery efficiencies will differ depending upon the choice of algorithm and approximation method, as will dispersion coefficients estimated based on the calibration of simulations to match measured data. A comparison of centered and backward finite-difference approximation methods shows that substantially different transition zones between injected and native waters are depicted by the different methods, and computed recovery efficiencies vary greatly. Standard and experimental algorithms and a variety of values for molecular diffusivity, transverse dispersivity, and vertical scaling factor were compared in simulations of freshwater storage in a thin brackish aquifer. Computed recovery efficiencies vary considerably, and appreciable differences are observed in the distribution of injected freshwater in the various cases tested. The results demonstrate both a qualitatively different description of transport using the experimental algorithms and the interrelated influences of molecular diffusion and transverse dispersion on simulated recovery efficiency. When simulating natural aquifer flow in cross-section, flushing of the aquifer occurred for all tested coefficient choices using both standard and experimental algorithms.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0022-1694(93)90253-6","issn":"00221694","usgsCitation":"Merritt, M.L., 1993, Aspects of numerical and representational methods related to the finite-difference simulation of advective and dispersive transport of freshwater in a thin brackish aquifer: Journal of Hydrology, v. 148, no. 1-4, p. 61-92, https://doi.org/10.1016/0022-1694(93)90253-6.","productDescription":"32 p.","startPage":"61","endPage":"92","numberOfPages":"32","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225065,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"148","issue":"1-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059edbce4b0c8380cd49995","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Merritt, M. Healthy, seemingly well-protected populations have disappeared for no obvious reason. Data from historic accounts and museum records indicate that the Cascades frog, Rana cascadae, was once abundant at the southern end of its range in the vicinity of Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, USA. We conducted intensive searches at all 16 sites where R. cascadae had previously been recorded in the Lassen area, plus 34 additional sites with suitable habitat. Whereas earlier biologists could sometimes find 40 or more frogs at some of these sites, we were only able to locate two frogs at a single locality. This represents a precipitous decline over a period of <15 years. The decline seems to have been caused by a combination of local factors, including (1) the presence of non-native, predatory fish which have restricted habitat and limited dispersal of frogs; (2) loss of breeding habitat due to a five-year drought; and (3) the gradual loss of open meadows and associated aquatic habitats. The loss of frogs suggests that some common management practices in parks and wilderness areas may be endangering some of the species these areas are intended to protect. Similar local factors may account for amphibian declines reported elsewhere and should be carefully evaluated along with possible global effects.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0006-3207(93)90447-9","usgsCitation":"Fellers, G.M., and Drost, C.A., 1993, Disappearance of the cascades frog Rana cascadae at the southern end of its range, California, USA: Biological Conservation, v. 65, no. 1993, p. 177-181, https://doi.org/10.1016/0006-3207(93)90447-9.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"177","endPage":"181","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130927,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Lassen National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.76728073572755,\n              40.643474261394914\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.76728073572755,\n              40.295716978522194\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17989880070715,\n              40.295716978522194\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.17989880070715,\n              40.643474261394914\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.76728073572755,\n              40.643474261394914\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"65","issue":"1993","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ab1c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fellers, Gary M. 0000-0003-4092-0285 gary_fellers@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4092-0285","contributorId":3150,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fellers","given":"Gary","email":"gary_fellers@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":316540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drost, Charles A. 0000-0002-4792-7095 charles_drost@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4792-7095","contributorId":3151,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drost","given":"Charles","email":"charles_drost@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":316541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
