It is one in a series of reports representing a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey, Kansas Geological Survey, and Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geology and Land Survey. The work presented here is part of a larger project whose goal is to assess the mineral resource potential of the Paleozoic sedimentary section and crystalline basement within the quadrangle. Reports discussing geochemical, geological, and various other aspects of the study area are included in this Miscellaneous Field Studies Map series as MF-2125-A through MF-2125-E. Geophysical interpretation of Precambrian crystalline basement lithology and structure is the focus of this report.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The study of the crystalline basement is complicated by the lack of exposures due to the presence of a thick sequence of Phanerozoic sedimentary cover. In areas where there are no outcrops, the geologist must turn to other indirect methods to assist in an understanding of the basement. Previous investigations of the buried basement in this region used available drill hole data, isotope age information, and regional geophysical data (Sims, 1990; Denison and others, 1984; Bickford and others, 1986). These studies were regional in scope and were presented at state and multistate scales. The work documented here used recently collected detailed gravity and aeromagnetic data to enhance the regional geologic knowledge of the area. Terrace-density and terrace-magnetization maps were calculated from the gravity and aeromagnetic data, leading directly to inferred physical-property (density and magnetization) maps. Once these maps were produced, the known geology and drill-hole data were reconciled with the physical-property maps to form a refined structural and lithologic map of the crystalline basement.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/mf2125D","usgsCitation":"McCafferty, A.E., and Cordell, L.E., 1992, Geophysically inferred structural and lithologic map of the precambrian basement in the Joplin 1° x 2° quadrangle, Kansas and Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2125, 1 Plate: 49.09 x 34.98 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2125D.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 49.09 x 34.98 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183581,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf2125d.jpg"},{"id":389506,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5728.htm"},{"id":283662,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2125-D/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"500000","country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Missouri","otherGeospatial":"Joplin 1° x 2° quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -96.0,37.0 ], [ -96.0,38.0 ], [ -94.0,38.0 ], [ -94.0,37.0 ], [ -96.0,37.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b36c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCafferty, Anne E. 0000-0001-5574-9201 anne@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5574-9201","contributorId":1120,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCafferty","given":"Anne","email":"anne@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":263376,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cordell, Lindrith E.","contributorId":13307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordell","given":"Lindrith","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This quadrangle, in west-central Montana, is one of the most mineralized and productive regions in the United States. Its mining districts, including the world famous Butte or Summit Valley district, have produced a variety of metallic and nonmetallic mineral commodities valued at more than $6.4 billion. Because of its importance as a mineral producing region, the Butte quadrangle was selected for study by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program (CUSMAP). Under this program, new data on geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geochronology, mineral resources, and remote sensing were collected and synthesized. The field and laboratory studies were also supported by funding from the Geologic Framework and Synthesis Program and the Wilderness Program. The methods used in resource assessment include a compilation of all data into data sets, the development of a descriptive model for vein and replacement deposits in the quadrangle, and the analysis of data using techniques provided by the Geographic Information System (GIS). This map is one of a number of reports and maps on the Butte 1 °X2° quadrangle. Other publications resulting from this study include U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Maps 1-2050-A (Rowan and Segal, in press) and I-2050-B (Purdy and Rowan, in press); Miscellaneous Field Studies Map MF-1925 (Wallace, 1987); and Open-File Reports 86-292 (Wallace and others, 1986) and 86--0632 (Elliott and others, 1986). Volcano boundaries are shown as heavy, dark bands, reflecting the overlapping of lava flows from adjacent volcanoes along their common boundary. Hazard-zone boundaries are drawn as double lines because of the geologic uncertainty in their placement. Most boundaries are gradational, and the change In the degree of hazard can be found over a distance of a mile or more. The general principles used to place hazard-zone boundaries are discussed by Mullineaux and others (1987) and Heliker (1990). The differences between the boundaries presented here and in Heliker (1990) reflect new data used in the compilation of a geologic map for the Island of Hawaii (E.W. Wolfe and Jean Morris, unpub. data, 1989). The primary source of information for volcano boundaries and generalized ages of lava flows for all five volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii is the geologic map of Hawaii (E.W. Wolfe and Jean Morris, unpub. data, 1989). More detailed information is available for the three active volcanoes. For the purpose of the assessment, mineral deposits· in the quadrangle that are either known or suspected from a knowledge of the geologic setting have been grou~d into 30 deposit types on the basis of mineralogy, commodity, or structural or depositional setting. The emphasis in these assessment reports is on metallic minerals, but some important nonmetallic minerals will also be assessed. Fossil fuels are beyond the scope of this investigation; phosphate and uranium have been investigated previously&nbsp;(Swanson, 1970; Wodzicki andKrason, 1981); and certain nonmetallic. minerals, including bulk commodities such as sand and gravel, are in large supply and thus not considered.&nbsp;</p><p>The ·mineral resource assessment discussed in this report considers two deposit types: (1) porphyry or stockwork deposits of copper. and molybdenum (referred to generally in this report as porphyry deposits) and (2) skarn deposits of tungsten, iron, gold, copper, and silver. Combining copper and molybenum porphyry deposits into a single deposit type is believed necessary for this purpose· mainly because the two metals are found together in most .deposits in the quadrangle, a geochemical signature unique to each has not been determined, and the significant petrologic characteristics of many associated plutons are not well known, especially characterist~cs of subsurface plutons whose presence is .inferred from geophysical data. </p><p>In assessing mineral resources,· we have adopted a general philosophy similar to that of Harrison and others (19S6). We attempt to identify those parts of the quadrangle that are favorable for the occurrence of mineral resources. We do not attempt to locate specific exploration targets nor to determine the quantity of reserves or resources present. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i1803G","usgsCitation":"Pearson, R.C., Trautwein, C., Moll, S.H., Berger, B.R., Hanna, W.F., Loen, J., Rowan, L.C., Ruppel, E.T., and Segal, D.B., 1992, Maps showing mineral resource assessment for copper and molybdenum in porphyry and stockwork deposits and for tungsten, iron, gold, copper, and silver in skarn deposits, Dillon 1° x 2° quadrangle, Idaho and Montana: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 1803, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/i1803G.","productDescription":"28 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":107137,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9930.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"9930"},{"id":255034,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1803g/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":255033,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1803g/report.pdf","size":"2442","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Montana","otherGeospatial":"Dillon 1° x 2° quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -114,45 ], [ -114,46 ], [ -112,46 ], [ -112,45 ], [ -114,45 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605c7b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pearson, R. The cruises systematically surveyed the entire conterminous United States west coast EEZ using the Geological Long-Range Inclined Asdic (GLORIA) side-scan sonar, a 160-in<sup>3</sup> airgun seismic-reflection profiler, a 3.5-kHz high-resolution seismic-reflection profiler, a 10-kHz echo sounder, and a proton-precession magnetometer. The nominal trackline spacing throughout the survey was 30 km.\nDerivative maps of sediment thickness (I-2089-A, I-2090-A, I-2091-A) and depth to basement (I-2089-B, I-2090-B, I-2091-B) in the basins of the west coast EEZ were compiled from both the sonar-image dala and the deep-penetration seismic data obtained on these cruises. Only EEZ-SCAN 84 data were used for the map compilations because available data from other cruises in this region are sparsely located, have poor navigational control, or were obtained with seismic systems that were not powerful enough to resolve oceanic basement. For this map series, sediment thickness and depth to basement were determined only in the deep-ocean basin regions because the seismic system used on the EEZ-SCAN 84 cruises could not resolve oceanic basement beneath the thick sediments of the continental slope. All the data used to compile the maps are presented in the \"Atlas of the Exclusive Economic Zone, Western Conterminous United States\" (EEZ-SCAN 84 Scientific Staff, 1986).\nBasement Outcrops\nGLORIA imagery was used to locate areas of basement outcrop throughout the region. Where possible, sediment thickness on and immediately adjacent to basement outcrops was measured from seismic data. Where there was no bathymetric or seismic control, a seamount peak was assumed to have no sediment cover. A pattern is used on the map to indicate all basement outcrops.\nData Reduction\nAcoustic basement in the basins, invariably oceanic Layer 2, was observed on all of the seismic records. One-way traveltime was measured from the sea floor to acoustic basement. Because the trackline spacing of about 30 km is relatively large compared to the data density along track, we chose to measure the sediment thickness every 0.5 hour or at an interval of approximately 7.5 km. Water depth was measured with a 10-kHz profiler. Depth to basement was calculated using the sea surface as the zero datum and adding the corrected water depth (Carter, 1980) to the sediment thickness. Acoustic travel times were converted to depths by first calculating a regression equation from the interval velocity versus depth data of Connard and others (1984). Their data base comprises a compilation of all available Deep Sea Drilling Project data plus wide-angle refraction data, which were collected in Cascadia Basin west of Oregon and represents the best data set available for the United States west coast EEZ. The regression equation was integrated to determine sediment thickness as a function of one-way traveltime . The resulting equation is\nz = 1400t + 0 .5t<sup>2</sup>\nwhere z is sediment thickness in meters, and t is one-way traveltime in seconds. Sediment thicknesses calculated using this equation were compared to values calculated from the general equation of Carlson and others (1986). Values for sediment thickness calculated by the two equations differed by no greater than 10 percent throughout the range of travel times.\nBathymetry\nThe bathymetry is from Chase and others (1981). The bathymetric data were compiled from a variety of sources, and data quality is inconsistent. Because of differences in navigational precision and density of coverage, the bathymetric contours of a feature may be at a different location than the corresponding isopleths derived from the EEZ-SCAN 84 data, or a feature may not be indicated on the bathymetry at all. These situations occur because either the feature is poorly located in the bathymetric data set or, especially in the outer EEZ, the bathymetric data are too sparse to have defined the existence of a feature.\nAcknowledgments\nTopographic digital data bases were corrected and verified by Christina Lief. Gerald Evenden developed the computer software system MAPGEN, used to compose this map. Reviews, suggestions, and technical contributions from Edward C. Escowitz and Florence Wong and advice about cartographic design from Will Stettner substantially improved the quality of this map.\nReferences Cited\nCarlson, R.L., Gangi, A.F., and Snow, K.R., 1986, Empirical reflection-traveltime/ depth and velocity/depth functions for the deep-sea sediment column: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 91, no. Each product of the folio is designated by a different letter symbol, starting with A, in the MF-1877 folio. The quadrangle encompasses an area of about 19,500 km<sup>2</sup> &nbsp;in the west central part of Nevada.</p>\n<p>The set of gravity data consists of 4,185 observation points. Plouff (1990b) described data sources, base stations, reduction and compilation methods, and the accuracy of the data. Principal facts for the gravity data are listed in tables and are in digital format on a magnetic diskette. That report incorporates and partly supersedes principal facts published by Healey and others (1980), Saltus and others (1981), and Boland others (1983).</p>\n<p>A 4-minute band of gravity data obtained from Plouff (1982) and Saltus (1988b) for the area surrounding the Tonopah quadrangle provided sufficient data coverage to contour Bouguer gravity anomalies to the edges of the Tonopah quadrangle (sheet 1). This map supersedes the gravity map published by Healey and others (1981). Values of observed gravity were tied to the International Gravity Standardization Network of 1971 (Morelli, 1974). Theoretical gravity at sea level was determined by using the Geodetic Reference System, 1967 formula (International Association of Geodesy, 1971, p. 60). The standard free-air formula (Swick, 1942, p.65) and a standard reduction density of 2.67 g/cm<sup>3</sup> were used. Corrections for the Earth's curvature and terrain were calculated to a standard distance of 166.7 km. These parameters were selected so that the Bouguer gravity anomaly map merges with previously published gravity maps (Plouff, 1987; and Saltus, 1988a).</p>\n<p>A residual isostatic gravity map (sheet 2) was prepared so that the regional effect of isostatic compensation present on the Bouguer gravity anomaly map (sheet 1) would be minimized. Isostatic corrections based on the Airy-Heiskanen system (Heiskanen and Vening Meinesz, 1958, p. 135-137) were estimated by using 3-minute topographic digitization and applying the method of Jachens and Roberts (1981). Parameters selected for the isostatic model were 25 km for the normal crustal thickness at sea level, 2.67 g/cm<sup>3</sup> for the density of the crust, and 0.4 g/cm<sup>3</sup> for the contrast in density between the crust and the upper mantle. These parameters were selected so that the isostatic residual gravity map would be consistent with isostatic residual gravity maps of the adjacent Walker Lake quadrangle (Plouff, 1987) and the state of Nevada (Saltus, 1988c).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1877D","usgsCitation":"Plouff, D., 1992, Bouguer gravity anomaly and isostatic residual gravity maps of the Tonopah 1 degree by 2 degrees Quadrangle, central Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1877, 2 Plates: 35.05 x 43.72 inches and 29.19 x 23.35 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1877D.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 35.05 x 43.72 inches and 29.19 x 23.35 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326118,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1877D.JPG"},{"id":327418,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1877-D/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327419,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1877-D/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118,38 ], [ -118,39 ], [ -116,39 ], [ -116,38 ], [ -118,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db601f59","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plouff, Donald","contributorId":94657,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Plouff","given":"Donald","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264082,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These digital data were obtained and compiled from many sources; consequently, data quality varies within particular data bases as well as from one data base to another.\nBathymetric contours were digitized from a map compiled by Chase and others (1981) and from the unpublished large scale versions of that map (T.E. Chase, unpub. maps, 1981). Data for the area seaward of the continental slope (~2000 m depth) were obtained primarily from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) 1955 Pacific Exploratory Survey, a systematic and detailed (~8 -nmi trackline spacing) survey between Mexico and Canada. The USGS provided data from cruises S3-78-NC, S15-79-NC, L2-77-NC, Ll0-76-NC, and Bartlett 72. Data were also obtained from Scripps Institution of Oceanography cruises Merazine, Blue Flash, Kayak B, Scan I, and Seven Tow (Chase and Menard, 1971; Chase and others, 1975; Wilde and others, 1976; Wilde and others, 1978). The 200-m contour was derived from the National Ocean Survey charts 1306N-20 (1975), 1307N-l1B (1974a), 1307N-18B (1974b), and C&GS chart 1308N-12 (1969). Sea-floor depths were corrected for sound velocity in sea water using Matthew's (1939) tables.\nOnshore topographic contours were generated by computer from a modified version of 3-arc-second elevation data provided by the Defense Mapping Agency.\nThe United States digital shoreline was obtained from the NOAA, NOS, Nautical Charting Division, National Atlas files. The coastline of Canada was digitized from Canadian Hydrographic Service bathymetric maps. The primary source of names of the sea floor features was the \"Gazetteer of Undersea Features\" (Defense Mapping Agency, 1990).\nAcknowledgments\nChristopher Hines assisted in the construction and verification of the digital data bases. Jackson and Moore (1992) reported the presence of cassiterite (SnO<sub>2</sub>)-bearing heavy-mineral concentrates from stream sediment samples that were collected during a regional geochemical reconnaissance of the Greenville 1&deg; x 2&deg; quadrangle. The data reported here confirm identified in selected heavy-mineral concentrate samples. In addition, anomalously high concentrations of barium, beryllium, lanthanum, and thorium are also reported for parts of the same areas. No significant mineral deposits are known to occur in the study areas. There was, however, minor production of monazite from several nearby localities (Sloan, 1908), and gold was produced from deposits in the northeastern part of Greenville County and nearby Spartanburg County (McCauley and Butler, 1966). The three areas selected for resampling are located in the Inner Piedmont physiographic province of South Carolina (see index map). The generalized tectonic setting of the region and the locations of the study is just north of Greenville, S.C. Much of it is within the moderately to steeply sloped terrane of Paris Mountain State Park where elevations reach approximately 600 m. Simpsonville, S.C., is neat the center of the second study area, and the southernmost study area is near Hickory Tavern, S.C. Both the Simpsonville and Hickory Tavern study areas are in more gently rolling Piedmont terrane. Each of the sampled areas is drained by tributaries of the Enoree and Reedy Rivers. Parts of three different thrust sheets underlie the region covered by this study (fig. 1); in ascending structural position, they are the Six Mile, Paris Mountain, and Laurens thrust sheets (Nelson and others, 1987). Nelson (1988, p. 7) described the contacts between these sheets as being along unnamed faults. The rocks in and around the study areas have undergone sillimanite-muscovite-grade metamorphism (Nelson, 1988, p. 9). Nelson (1988, p. 13) reports that the Six Mile thrust sheet was metamorphosed about 344 Ma. The geology of these sheets as described in this study, including geologic contacts, rock descriptions, and unit names, generally follows that of Nelson and others (1987, 1989). Within the Paris Mountain study area, rocks of the Paris Mountain thrust sheet predominate (fig. 2) and consist of a biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist (EZsp) that has extensive lenses of fine- to medium- grained biotite granite gneiss (Pzgp). Areas of biotite granite gneiss that occur in the southern part of the Paris Mountain study area contain extensive pegmatitic and leucogranitic phases. These pegmatitic zones consist mostly of coarse-grained microcline feldspar and quartz with minor amounts of muscovite, biotite, and garnet. Smaller pegmatite lenses (<0.5 m thick) that occur within the biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist of the Paris Mountain study area are generally of similar mineralogy, although some contain tourmaline crystals up to 5 cm in length. The Six Mile thrust sheet underlies the northern edge of the Paris Mountain study area, where it is composed of gneissic biotitic granites of the Caesars Head Granite (figs. 1 and 2). The northwestern part of the Simpsonville study area (figs. 1 and 3), within the Paris Mountain thrust sheet, is underlain by a biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist (EZsp) that contains lenses of biotite granite gneiss (Pzgp). In the southeastern part of the Simpsonville study area, within the Laurens thrust sheet, biotite gneiss (EZgl), biotite granite gneiss (Pzgf), and minor amphibolite (EZal) are interlayered biotite (EZgl), granite gneiss (Dgg), and amphibolite (EZal) of the Laurens thrust sheet (fig. 4).","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf2205","usgsCitation":"Jackson, J.C., 1992, A geochemical investigation of selected areas in Greenville and Laurens Counties, South Carolina: Implications for mineral resources: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2205, 2 Plates: 48.27 x 29.72 inches and 42.00 x 36.70 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2205.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 48.27 x 29.72 inches and 42.00 x 36.70 inches","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":182455,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf2205.jpg"},{"id":406790,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5837.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":284442,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2205/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":284443,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2205/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"48000","datum":"National Geodetic Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"South Carolina","county":"Greenville County, Laurens County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.45,\n              34.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.125,\n              34.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.125,\n              35\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.45,\n              35\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.45,\n              34.625\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd49dce4b0b290850ef6d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jackson, John C. jjackson@usgs.gov","contributorId":2652,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jackson","given":"John","email":"jjackson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":262638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is located off the Carolinas on the continental rise in approximately 1,200-5,500 m water depth and extends downslope for over 300 km (Popenoe, 1982). These maps show the bathymetry at the head of the Cape Fear Slide as interpreted from single-channel 3.5 kHz seismic-reflection profiles and mid-range Sea Marc I sidescan sonar imagery (Popenoe, 1985; Popenoe and others, 1991; Schmuck, 1991). The 3.5 kHz data consist of over 1000 km of profiles that were collected in 1988 for the University of North Carolina, Department of Geology. The UNC 3.5 kHz data were used as the main data set in interpreting the bathymetry. The sidescan sonar data were collected in 1980 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management Environmental Studies Program. Other deposit types have been assessed and reports for each of the following have been prepared: Vein and replacement deposits of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, ·manganese, and tungsten; porphyry-stockwork deposits of copper, molybdenum, and tungsten; stockwork-disseminated deposits of gold and silver; placer deposits of gold; and miscellaneous deposit types including strata-bound deposits of copper and silver in rocks of the Middle Proterozoic Belt Supergroup, phosphate deposits in the Permian Phosporia Formation, and deposits of barite and fluorite. The Butte quadrangle, in west-central Montana, is one of the most mineralized and productive mining regions in the U.S. Its mining districts, including the world famous Butte or Summit Valley district, have produced a variety of metallic and nonmetallic mineral commodities valued at more than $6.4 billion (at the time of production). Because of its importance as a mineral producing region, the Butte quadrangle was selected for study by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program (CUSMAP). Under this program, new data on geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geochronology, mineral resources, and remote sensing were collected and synthesized. The field and laboratory studies were supported, in part, by funding from the Geologic Framework and Synthesis Program and the Wilderness Program. The methods used in resource assessment include a compilation of all data into data sets, the development of an occurrence model for skarn deposits in the quadrangle, and the analysis of data using techniques provided by a Geographic Information System (GIS). </p><p>This map is one of a number of reports and maps on the Butte 1 °X2° quadrangle. The cruises systematically surveyed the entire conterminous United States west coast EEZ using the Geological Long-Range Inclined Asdic (GLORIA) side-scan sonar, a 160-in3 airgun seismic-reflection profiler, a 3.5-kHz high-resolution seismic-reflection profiler, a 10-kHz echo sounder, and a proton-precession magnetometer. The nominal trackline spacing throughout the survey was 30 km.\nDerivative maps of sediment thickness (I-2089-A, I-2090-A, I-2091-A) and depth to basement (I-2089-B, I-2090-B, I-2091-B) in the basins of the west coast EEZ were compiled from both the sonar-image dala and the deep-penetration seismic data obtained on these cruises. Only EEZ-SCAN 84 data were used for the map compilations because available data from other cruises in this region are sparsely located, have poor navigational control, or were obtained with seismic systems that were not powerful enough to resolve oceanic basement. For this map series, sediment thickness and depth to basement were determined only in the deep-ocean basin regions because the seismic system used on the EEZ-SCAN 84 cruises could not resolve oceanic basement beneath the thick sediments of the continental slope. All the data used to compile the maps are presented in the \"Atlas of the Exclusive Economic Zone, Western Conterminous United States\" (EEZ-SCAN 84 Scientific Staff, 1986).\nBasement Outcrops\nGLORIA imagery was used to locate areas of basement outcrop throughout the region. Where possible, sediment thickness on and immediately adjacent to basement outcrops was measured from seismic data. Where there was no bathymetric or seismic control, a seamount peak was assumed to have no sediment cover. A pattern is used on the map to indicate all basement outcrops.\nData Reduction\nAcoustic basement in the basins, invariably oceanic Layer 2, was observed on all of the seismic records. One-way traveltime was measured from the sea floor to acoustic basement. Because the trackline spacing of about 30 km is relatively large compared to the data density along track, we chose to measure the sediment thickness every 0.5 hour or at an interval of approximately 7.5 km. Water depth was measured with a 10-kHz profiler. Depth to basement was calculated using the sea surface as the zero datum and adding the corrected water depth (Carter, 1980) to the sediment thickness. Acoustic travel times were converted to depths by first calculating a regression equation from the interval velocity versus depth data of Connard and others (1984). Their data base comprises a compilation of all available Deep Sea Drilling Project data plus wide-angle refraction data, which were collected in Cascadia Basin west of Oregon and represents the best data set available for the United States west coast EEZ. The regression equation was integrated to determine sediment thickness as a function of one-way traveltime . The resulting equation is\nz = 1400t + 0 .5t2\nwhere z is sediment thickness in meters, and t is one-way traveltime in seconds. Sediment thicknesses calculated using this equation were compared to values calculated from the general equation of Carlson and others (1986). Values for sediment thickness calculated by the two equations differed by no greater than 10 percent throughout the range of travel times.\nBathymetry\nThe bathymetry is from Chase and others (1981). The bathymetric data were compiled from a variety of sources, and data quality is inconsistent. Because of differences in navigational precision and density of coverage, the bathymetric contours of a feature may be at a different location than the corresponding isopleths derived from the EEZ-SCAN 84 data, or a feature may not be indicated on the bathymetry at all. These situations occur because either the feature is poorly located in the bathymetric data set or, especially in the outer EEZ, the bathymetric data are too sparse to have defined the existence of a feature.\nAcknowledgments\nTopographic digital data bases were corrected and verified by Christina Lief. Gerald Evenden developed the computer software system MAPGEN, used to compose this map. Reviews, suggestions, and technical contributions from Edward C. Escowitz and Florence Wong and advice about cartographic design from Will Stettner substantially improved the quality of this map.\nReferences Cited\nCarlson, R.L., Gangi, A.F., and Snow, K.R., 1986, Empirical reflection-traveltime/ depth and velocity/depth functions for the deep-sea sediment column: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 91, no. These digital data were obtained and compiled from many sources; consequently, data quality varies within particular data bases as well as from one data base to another.\nBathymetric contours north of 32&deg;N. were digitized from a map by Chase and others (1981) and from the unpublished large scale versions of that map (T. E. Chase, unpublished maps, 1981). South of 32&deg;N, the contours are from unpublished maps (T.E. Chase and B.A. Seekins, unpublished maps, 1989). Chase and others (1981 and unpublished maps) obtained the data for the area seaward of the continental slope (-2000 m depth) primarily from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) 1955 Pacific Exploratory Survey, a systematic and detailed (~8-nmi-trackline spacing) survey between Mexico and Canada. The USGS provided data from cruises S3-78-NC, L2-77-NC, L10-76-NC, K-73-NC, and Bartlett 72. Data were also obtained from Scripps Institution of Oceanography cruises Blue Flash, Kayak B, Scan I, and Seven Tow (Chase and Menard, 1971; Chase and others, 1975). The 200-m contour was derived from the National Ocean Survey charts 1206N-16 (1975a) and 1306N-20 (1975b), and C&GS charts 1206N-15 (1967a) and 1306N-19 (1967b). Sea-floor depths were corrected for sound velocity in sea water using Matthew's (1939) tables.\nOnshore topographic contours were generated by computer from a modified version of 3-arc-second elevation data provided by the Defense Mapping Agency.\nThe United States digital shoreline was obtained from the NOAA, NOS, Nautical Charting Division, National Atlas files. The coastline of Canada was digitized from Canadian Hydrographic Service bathymetric maps. The primary source of names of the sea floor features was the \"Gazetteer of Undersea Features\" (Defense Mapping Agency, 1990).\nAcknowledgments\nChristopher Hines assisted in the construction of the digital data bases. Reviews and suggestions by Edward C. Escowitz and Florence Wong and advice provided by Will Stettner regarding the cartographic design substantially improved the quality of this map.\nReferences Cited\nChase, T.E., and Menard, H.W., 1971, Bathymetric atlas of the northeastern Pacific Ocean: U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Publication 1303, scale 1:2,000,000 at 33&deg; latitude, 48 p.\nChase, T.E., Wilde, Pat, and Normark, W.R., 1975, Oceanographic data of the Monterey Deep Sea Fan: San Diego, University of California, Institute of Marine Resources Publication TR 58, scale 1:898,524 at 35&deg; latitude.\nChase, T.E., Wilde, Pat, Normark, W.R., Miller, C.P., Seekins, B.A., and Young, J.D., 1981, Offshore topography of the Western United States between 32&deg; and 49&deg; North latitudes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-443, scale 1:864,518 at 38&deg; latitude, 2 sheets.\nCoast and Geodetic Survey, 1967a, Santa Barbara to Huntington Beach : Coast and Geodetic Survey Bathymetric Map 1206N-15, scale 1:250,000.\nCoast and Geodetic Survey, 1967b, Southwest of Santa Rosa Island: Coast and Geodetic Survey Bathymetric Map 1306N-19, scale 1:250,000.\nDefense Mapping Agency, 1990, Gazetteer of undersea features (4th ed.): Washington, D.C., Defense Mapping Agency.\nMatthews, D.J., 1939, Tables of the velocity of sound in pure water and sea water (2d ed.): London, Admiralty, Hydrographic Department, H.D. 282, 52 p.\nNational Ocean Survey, 1975a, Hungington Beach to Punta Sal Si Puedes: National Ocean Survey Bathymetric Map 1206N-16, scale 1:250,000.\nNational Ocean Survey, 1975b, Cape San Martin to Point Conception: National Ocean Survey Bathymetric Map 1306N-20, scale 1:250,000.\nindex map for I-2089-A","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/i2089C","usgsCitation":"Chase, T.E., Pat, W., Normark, W.R., Evenden, G., Miller, C.P., Seekins, B.A., Young, J.D., Grim, M.S., and Lief, C.J., 1992, Map showing bottom topography of the Pacific continental margin, Point Conception to Point Loma: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2089, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2089C.","productDescription":"HTML Document","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":389553,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_10121.htm"},{"id":120714,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/i_2089_C.jpg"},{"id":94396,"rank":99,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2089/c/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1000000","country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -126,30 ], [ -126,35 ], [ -117,35 ], [ -117,30 ], [ -126,30 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a95e4b07f02db659a3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chase, T. N. latitudes were plotted from digital data bases in the library of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)-National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Joint Office for Mapping and Research (JOMAR). These digital data were obtained and compiled from many sources; consequently, data quality varies within particular data bases as well as from one data base to another.\nBathymetric contours were digitized from a map compiled by Chase and others (1981) and from the unpublished large scale versions of that map (T.E. Chase, unpub. maps, 1981). Data for the area seaward of the continental slope (~2000 m depth) were obtained primarily from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) 1955 Pacific Exploratory Survey, a systematic and detailed (~8 -nmi trackline spacing) survey between Mexico and Canada. The USGS provided data from cruises S3-78-NC, S15-79-NC, L2-77-NC, Ll0-76-NC, and Bartlett 72. Data were also obtained from Scripps Institution of Oceanography cruises Merazine, Blue Flash, Kayak B, Scan I, and Seven Tow (Chase and Menard, 1971; Chase and others, 1975; Wilde and others, 1976; Wilde and others, 1978). The 200-m contour was derived from the National Ocean Survey charts 1306N-20 (1975), 1307N-l1B (1974a), 1307N-18B (1974b), and C&GS chart 1308N-12 (1969). The primary source of names of the sea floor features was the \"Gazetteer of Undersea Features\" (Defense Mapping Agency, 1990).\nAcknowledgments\nChristopher Hines assisted in the construction and verification of the digital data bases. Reviews and suggestions by Edward C. Escowitz and Florence Wong and advice provided by Will Stettner regarding the cartographic design substantially improved the quality of this map.\nReferences Cited\nChase, T.E., and Menard, H.W., 1971, Bathymetric atlas of the northeastern Pacific Ocean: U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Publication 1303, scale 1:2,000,000 at 33&deg; latitude, 48 p.\nChase, T.E., Wilde, Pat, and Normark, W.R., 1975, Oceanographic data of the Monterey Deep Sea Fan: San Diego, University of California, Institute of Marine Resources Publication TR 58, scale 1:898,524 at 35&deg; latitude.\nChase, T.E., Wilde, Pat, Normark, W.R., Miller, C.P., Seekins, B.A., and Young, J.D., 1981, Offshore topography of the Western United States between 32&deg; and 49&deg; North latitudes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-443, scale 1:864,518 at 38&deg; latitude, 2 sheets.\nCoast and Geodetic Survey, 1969, Point St. George to Point Delgada: Coast and Geodetic Survey Bathymetric Map 1308N-12, scale 1:250,000.\nDefense Mapping Agency, 1990, Gazetteer of undersea features (4th ed.): Washington, D.C., Defense Mapping Agency.\nMatthews, D.J., 1939, Tables of the velocity of sound in pure water and sea water (2d ed.): London, Admiralty, Hydrographic Department, H.D. 282, 52 p.\nNational Ocean Survey, 1974a, Vicinity Pt. Command files","docAbstract":"This geologic map was prepared as a part of a study of digital\r\n methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. The\r\n geologic map was digitized from the original scribe sheets used to\r\n prepare the published Geologic Map of Colorado (Tweto 1979).\r\n Consequently the digital version is at 1:500,000 scale using the\r\n Lambert Conformal Conic map projection parameters of the state base\r\n map. Stable base contact prints of the scribe sheets were scanned on\r\n a Tektronix 4991 digital scanner. The scanner automatically converts\r\n the scanned image to an ASCII vector format. These vectors were\r\n transferred to a VAX minicomputer, where they were then loaded into\r\n ARC/INFO. Each vector and polygon was given attributes derived from\r\n the original 1979 geologic map.\r\n \r\n This database was developed on a MicroVAX computer system using VAX\r\n V 5.4 nd ARC/INFO 5.0 software.\r\n \r\n UPDATE: April 1995,\r\n The update was done solely for the purpose of adding the abilitly to\r\n plot to an HP650c plotter. Two new ARC/INFO plot AMLs along with a lineset\r\n and shadeset for the HP650C design jet printer have been included. These\r\n new files are COLORADO.650, INDEX.650, TWETOLIN.E00 and TWETOSHD.E00. These\r\n files were created on a UNIX platform with ARC/INFO 6.1.2. Updated versions\r\n of INDEX.E00, CONTACT.E00, LINE.E00, DECO.E00 and BORDER.E00 files that\r\n included the newly defined HP650c items are also included.\r\n \r\n * Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes\r\n only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.\r\n \r\n \r\n Descriptors:\r\n The Digital Geologic Map of Colorado in ARC/INFO Format\r\n Open-File Report 92-050","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The digital geologic map of Colorado in ARC/INFO format","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr92507B","usgsCitation":"Green, G.N., 1992, The digital geologic map of Colorado in ARC/INFO format, Part B.
