The report describes the sampling networks, the sampling procedures, and the results of the ground-water quality and quality-assurance sample analyses. The data tables consist of information about the wells sampled and the results of the chemical analyses of ground water and quality-assurance sampling.\r\nChemical analyses of ground-water samples in four sampling networks are presented: A geochemical network, a low-density survey bedrock network, a low-density survey alluvium and terrace deposits network, and a targeted urban network. The analyses generally included physical properties, major ions, nutrients, trace substances, radionuclides, and organic constituents.\r\n\r\nThe chemical analyses of the ground-water samples are presented in five tables: (1) Physical properties and concentrations of major ions, nutrients, and trace substances; (2) concentrations of radionuclides and radioactivities; (3) carbon isotope ratios and delta values (d-values) of selected isotopes; (4) concentrations of organic constituents; and (5) organic constituents not reported in ground-water samples.\r\n\r\nThe quality of the ground water sampled varied substantially. The sum of constituents (dissolved solids) concentrations ranged from 71 to 5,610 milligrams per liter, with 38 percent of the wells sampled exceeding the Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level of 500 milligrams per liter established under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Values of pH ranged from 5.7 to 9.2 units with 20 percent of the wells outside the Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level of 6.5 to 8.5 units. Nitrite plus nitrate concentrations ranged from less than 0.1 to 85 milligrams per liter with 8 percent of the wells exceeding the proposed Maximum Contaminant Level of 10 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of trace substances were highly variable, ranging from below the reporting level to concentrations over the Maximum Contaminant Levels for several constituents (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, and selenium). Radionuclide activities also were highly variable. Gross alpha radioactivity ranged from 0.1 to 210 picocuries per liter as 230thorium. Of the wells sampled, 20 percent exceeded the proposed Maximum Contaminant Level of 15 picocuries per liter for gross alpha radioactivity. Organic constituents were detected in 39 percent of the 170 wells sampled for organic constituents; in most cases concentrations were at or near the laboratory minimum reporting levels. Ten of the wells sampled for organic constituents had one or more constituents (chlordane, dieldrin, heptachlor epoxide, trichloroethylene, 1,1-dichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane) at concentrations equal to or greater than the Maximum Contaminant Level or acceptable concentrations as suggested in the Environmental Protection Agency's Health Advisory Summaries.\r\n\r\nQuality-assurance sampling included duplicate samples, repeated samples, blanks, spikes, and blind samples. Longwall coal mining is method of underground mining in which 75 to 90 percent of the coal is removed; conventional methods, such as room-and-pillar mining, remove only about 50 percent of the coal. Use of the longwall method is expected to increase in Ohio. Collapse or subsidence of the overburden and land surface occurs immediately after the removal of the coal. Such collapse can disrupt surface drainage and the recharge of ground water.\r\n\r\nThe data include streamflow, water quality, and the abundance and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish. The data were collected from eight sites on six streams from July 1987 through September 1989. The drainage areas of these sites range from 2.04 to 80.8 square miles and include the major drainages of the area being mined.\r\n\r\nTotal precipitation in 1987 and 1988 in the study area was 78 and 81 percent, respectively, of the annual average (from 1939 to 1989) of 39.59 inches. The total precipitation in 1989 was 135 percent of the annual average. Streams at six of the eight sites were dry for parts of the first 2 years.\r\n\r\nSpecific conductance ranged from 180 to 3,500 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius, pH ranged from 6.9 to 8.0, and the concentration of total recoverable iron ranged from 80 to 1,800 micrograms per liter. Macroinvertebrate and fish populations indicate a warmwater-habitat rating of fair to good according to Ohio Environmental Protection Agency standards.\r\n\r\nThis information will help provide a data base from which the effects of longwall mining on streams in southern Ohio can be evaluated. The new version of MODFLOW is called MODFLOWP (pronounced MOD-FLOW*P), and functions nearly identically to MODFLOW when the ParameterEstimation Package is not used. Parameters are estimated by minimizing a weighted least-squares objective function by the modified Gauss-Newton method or by a conjugate-direction method. Parameters used to calculate the following MODFLOW model inputs can be estimated: Transmissivity and storage coefficient of confined layers; hydraulic conductivity and specific yield of unconfined layers; vertical leakance; vertical anisotropy (used to calculate vertical leakance); horizontal anisotropy; hydraulic conductance of the River, Streamflow-Routing, General-Head Boundary, and Drain Packages; areal recharge rates; maximum evapotranspiration; pumpage rates; and the hydraulic head at constant-head boundaries. Any spatial variation in parameters can be defined by the user. Data used to estimate parameters can include existing independent estimates of parameter values, observed hydraulic heads or temporal changes in hydraulic heads, and observed gains and losses along head-dependent boundaries (such as streams). World-wide estimates for the amount of gas contained in\r\nhydrates range from 1.1 x 105 to 2.7 x 108 trillion cubic feet.  Gas\r\nhydrates exist in many Arctic regions, including the North Slope of\r\nAlaska.\r\n\r\nThe two primary objectives of the U.S. Geological Survey Gas Hydrate\r\nResearch Project are (1) to map the distribution of in-situ gas hydrates\r\non the North Slope of Alaska, and (2) to evaluate the geologic parameters\r\nthat control the distribution of these gas hydrates.  To aid in this\r\nstudy, British Petroleum Exploration, ARCO Alaska, Exxon Company USA, and\r\nthe Continental Oil Company allowed the U.S. Geological Survey to collect\r\ngeochemical samples from  drilling North Slope production wells.\r\n\r\nMolecular analysis of gaseous drill cutting and free-flowing gas samples\r\nfrom 10 production wells drilled in the Prudhoe Bay, Kuparuk River, and\r\nMilne Point oil fields indicates that methane is the primary hydrocarbon\r\ngas in the gas hydrate-bearing stratigraphic units. Agricultural, domestic, municipal, industrial, hydroelectric-power genera-tion, and recreation are the primary uses of river water in the valley. Most of the consumptive use of water from the river occurs downstream from Davis Dam, where water is diverted to irrigate crops along the river or is exported to interior regions of California and Arizona.\r\n\r\nMost of the agricultural areas are on the alluvium of the flood plain; in a few areas, land on the alluvial terraces has been cultivated. River water is consumed mainly by vegetation (crops and phreatophytes) on the flood plain. Crops were grown on 70.3 percent of the vegetated area classified by using 1984 digital image satellite data. Phreatophytes, natural vege-tation that obtain water from the alluvial aquifer, covered the remaining vegetated areas on the uncultivated flood plain. Most of the water used for irrigation is diverted or pumped from the river. The bedrock aquifers include the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system, the Silurian-Devonian aquifer, the Mississippian aquifer, localized Pennsylvanian aquifers, and the Dakota aquifer. The surficial aquifers can be divided into three types: (1) buried channel, (2) alluvial, and (3) glacial drift. Information about the location, date of construction, and depth of each well, and the year water-level measurements began are provided for wells completed in each aquifer.</p>\n<p>The objectives of the ground-water-level monitoring network in Iowa are to provide the data needed to: (1) determine the change in aquifer storage, (2) document the effects of climatic stress and human activities on discharge and recharge to the principal aquifers, (3) quantify the physical characteristics of ground-water flow including the transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and specific capacity of aquifers; and (4) provide historical baseline data for future research. The design of the ground-water-level monitoring network in Iowa that satisfies these objectives includes three types of data: (1) hydrologic data, (2) water-management data for use by State and local
