Inferred reserves believed minable only under economic conditions much more favorable than even those of 1943 are estimated at 2,620 flasks of quicksilver in 135,080 tons averaging a little less than 1.5 lbs Hg per ton.\r\n\r\nAbout two-thirds of the indicated reserves are accessible in underground workings. All other reserves are estimated approximately without access underground. As a result of heavy rains during the late afternoon and night of May 27, 1954, record-breaking floods occurred on small streams in Panola and Lafayette Counties. All flooding was in rural areas, and no loss of life was reported. The Agriculture Stabilization Committees at Sardis and at Oxford estimated the crop and soil losses in Panola county as $400,000, and in Lafayette County as $25,000. The total damage to county roads and State highways was estimated to be in excess of $25,000.

The purpose of this report is to present rainfall information and more detailed runoff data than are found in the regular Water Supply Papers. The report contains a summary of peak discharges at 10 miscellaneous sites and a detailed record of discharge at the gaging station Clear Creek near Oxford, Miss.

In response to a request by Colonel Harry O. Fisher, District Engineer of the Fort Worth District of the Corps of Engineers, United States Army (letter of Dec. 13, 1954), a reconnaissance investigation was made of the geology of the Canyon (F-1) reservoir site on the Guadalupe River in Comal County, Tex.

The purpose of the investigation was to study the geology in relation to possible leakage - particularly leakage of water that might then be lost from the drainage area of the Guadalupe River - and to add to the general knowledge of the ground-water hydrology of the San Antonio area. The dam (F-1) was originally designed for flood control and conservation only, with provision for the addition of a power unit if feasible. Since the completion of the investigation by the Corps of Engineers, the city of San Antonio has expressed an interest in the reservoir as a possible source of public water supply.

The Corps of Engineers has made a thorough engineering and geologic study of the dam site (Corps of Engineers, 1950), which has Congressional approval. The geology and water resources of Comal County have been studied by George (1952).

The rocks studied are those within the reservoir area and generally below the 1,000-foot contour as shown on the Smithson Valley quadrangle of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several recent years of drought have emphasized the importance of Alabama's ground-water supplies, a matter of concern to us all.  So far we have been blessed in Alabama with ample ground-water, although a combination of increased use, waste, pollution, and drought has brought about critical local water shortages.  These problems serve as a fair warning of what lies ahead if we do not take the necessary steps to obtan adequate knowledge of our ground-water resources.

Prior to 1937, ground-water work in Oklahoma consisted of broad scale early-day reconnaissance and a few brief investigations of local areas. The reconnaissance is distinguished by C. N. Gould's \"Geology and Water Resources of Oklahoma\" (Water-Supply Paper 148, 1905), which covers about half of the present State of Oklahoma. Among the shorter reports are two by Schwennesen for areas near Enid and Oklahoma City, one by Renick for Enid, and one by Thompson on irrigation possibilities near Gage. These reports are now inadequate by modern standards.

Cooperative ground-water work in Oklahoma by the United States Geological Survey began in 1937, with the Oklahoma Geological Survey as cooperating agency. With the passage of the new ground-water law by the State Legislature in 1949, the need for more information on available ground waters and the safe yield of the various aquifers became very pressing. Accordingly, the Division of Water Resources of the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board, to which was delegated the responsibility of administering the Ground-Water Law, entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey, providing for an expansion of ground-water investigations. Both cooperators have consistently given full and enthusiastic cooperation, often beyond the requirements of the cooperative program.

The first cooperative investigation was an evaluation of ground-water supplies available for irrigation in the Panhandle. In 1937 the Panhandle was still very much in the dust bowl, and it was hoped that irrigation would alleviate the drought. A bulletin on Texas County was published in 1939, and one on Cimarron County in 1943. Ground-water investigations during the World War II were restricted to the demands of Army and Navy installations, and to defense industries. Ground-water investigations since 1945 have included both country-wide and aquifer-type investigations. In Oklahoma it has been the policy for the State cooperator to publish the results of the ground-water investigation.

Ground-water levels in the Whitney terrace area, after many years of rise owing to downward percolation of water from irrigated land, became nearly stabilized by 1935.  Strong seasonal water-level fluctuations of 8 to 10 feet, however, are common in the Boise Valley.  In recent years, the Whitney terrace has been changing rapidly from a farming to an urban community.  The 3,200-acre area now has about 15,000 inhabitants and the land area is about 35-percent occupied by urban developments.  Population trends indicate that urban expansion will continue.

Coincident with the change from rural to urban conditions on the Whitney terrace, the patterns of water use were drastically altered.  The amount of irrigated land has decreased but the amount of ground-water recharge from irrigation and yard water may have increased.  Liquid sewage effluent disposed in the ground also has increased the yearly volume of recharge.  The estimated average yearly amount of recharge from all sources now is about 2.4 acre-feet per acre.  Full urban development of the area may increase recharge from all sources to about 3.3 acre-feet per acre.

Ground-water and drainage problems can be relieved by reducing excessive recharge to the ground-water reservoir.  Reduction can be accomplished by economical use of water by individuals, establishment of a water-tight public sewage system to transport all sewage to a central plant outside of the area, and by drainage works.  These measures would cause a net decline of ground-water levels in the area.  They can be undertaken separately or collectively.

The strictly \"legal\" literature of ground-water use and control -except for a few essays in certain of the law reviews- is quite limited. A larger and more pointful source of information and analysis is the legal-scientific writings of the geologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, engineers and others. When new statutes are to be drafted by legislatures, and new decisions are to be made by courts on this subject, such literature may well be of far greater importance than legal precedents unfounded on scientific fact. This may be demonstrated by the character and scope of the legal-scientific literature of ground water, just one branch of water science, but one which is of major importance to any thoughtful consideration of water use and control.

The future of ground-water supplies in Texas presents a problem that is very important to the economy of Texas and to the well-being of almost every citizen of the state.  It is of particular importance to more than 580 municipalities using ground water as the sole source of water supply; to many thousands of farmers using ground water for irrigation and also to others living in irrigated areas or dependent on irrigated agriculture for their livelihood, to more than 2 million people living in rural areas who are dependent on ground water for domestic supply, and to a large number of industries throughout the State, including some o the biggest ones.

A search for aquifers in an area immediately north of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in New Castle, Del., has been made by an electrical resistivity study.  The search located 32 sites that may be underlain by sand and gravel. The thicker deposits are significant with respect to the occurrence of ground water, and all of them are of interest as possible sources of sand and gravel for construction purposes, such as for highway construction.  The thickness of these deposits ranges from 4.4 feet to 77 feet, and the computed resistivity for these ranges from a low of 97,800 ohm-cms to a high of 423,800 ohm-cms.  The study located with certainty one buried channel filled with sand and gravel deposits and pointed out the possibility of others that may be aquifers.  The interpretations show that a large deposit of sand and gravel is present in the eastern part of the area investigated and it is tentatively assumed that this deposit is continuous and may yield large quantities of ground water.  Places where the deposit was found to be the thickest and of high resistivity are described.
