Hydrologic data were collected from wells in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, from 1990 to 1992, to better understand the hydrologic system in the valley. Most of the data collected are from 36 monitoring wells drilled in June and July 1990 and March and May 1991 using a hollow-stem auger. These wells range from 15.0 to 129.5 feet deep and are completed in the shallow unconfined aquifer, an underlying confining layer, or both. Data from public supply wells and other existing wells completed in aquifers below the confining layers near these monitoring wells are presented in order to compare data from those wells with data from the shallow unconfined aquifer and the underlying confining layers.
Field data collected from selected wells and drill holes include well-completion information, lithologic logs, and water-level and field water-quality measurements. Water samples collected from monitoring wells drilled in 1990 and 1991 and from selected existing wells were analyzed for inorganic constituents, trace metals in unfiltered water, volatile organic compounds, organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and radionuclides. Core samples were collected from selected monitoring wells drilled in 1990 and 1991 and analyzed for geochemical and geotechnical properties. Cation exchange capacity, carbon concentration, and the concentration of selected elements in core material are presented. Particle size, dry density, moisture content, porosity, hydraulic conductivity, initial void ratio, specific storage, and other properties determined for material in cores from selected monitoring wells also are listed.

Chemical data were evaluated to determine the principal naturally occurring geochemical reactions in the unsaturated zone and to evaluate waste-induced effects on pore-water chemistry.\r\nSamples of precipitation, unsaturated-zone pore water, and saturated-zone water were analyzed for specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, major cations and anions, dissolved organic carbon, gross alpha and beta radiation, and tritium. Little change in concentration of most major constituents in the unsaturated-zone water was observed with respect to depth or distance from disposal trenches. Tritium and dissolved organic carbon concentrations were, however, dependent on proximity to trenches. The primary reactions, both on- site and off-site, were carbonate and clay dissolution, cation exchange, and the oxidation of pyrite.\r\n\r\nThe major difference between on-site and off-site inorganic water chemistry resulted from the removal of the Roxana Silt and the Radnor Till Member of the Glasford Formation from on-site. Off-site, the Roxana Silt contributed substantial quantities of sodium to solution from montmorillonite dissolution and associated cation-exchange reactions. The Radnor Till Member provided exchange surfaces for magnesium.\r\n\r\nPrecipitation at the site had an ionic composition of calcium zinc sulfate and an average pH of 4.6. Within 0.3 meter of the land surface, infiltrating rain water or snowmelt changed to an ionic canposition of calcium sulfate off-site and calcium bicarbonate on-site and had an average pH of 7.9; below that depth, pH averaged 7.5 and the ionic composition generally was calcium magnesium bicarbonate. Alkalinity and specific conductance differed primarily according to composition of geologic materials. Tritium concentrations ranged from 0.2 (detection limit) to 1,380 nanocuries per liter.\r\n\r\nThe methods of constructing, installing, and sampling with lysimeters were evaluated to ensure data reliability. Command files","docAbstract":"This geologic map was prepared as a part of a study of digital\r\n methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. The\r\n geologic map was digitized from the original scribe sheets used to\r\n prepare the published Geologic Map of Colorado (Tweto 1979).\r\n Consequently the digital version is at 1:500,000 scale using the\r\n Lambert Conformal Conic map projection parameters of the state base\r\n map. Stable base contact prints of the scribe sheets were scanned on\r\n a Tektronix 4991 digital scanner. The scanner automatically converts\r\n the scanned image to an ASCII vector format. These vectors were\r\n transferred to a VAX minicomputer, where they were then loaded into\r\n ARC/INFO. Each vector and polygon was given attributes derived from\r\n the original 1979 geologic map.\r\n \r\n This database was developed on a MicroVAX computer system using VAX\r\n V 5.4 nd ARC/INFO 5.0 software.\r\n \r\n UPDATE: April 1995,\r\n The update was done solely for the purpose of adding the abilitly to\r\n plot to an HP650c plotter. Two new ARC/INFO plot AMLs along with a lineset\r\n and shadeset for the HP650C design jet printer have been included. These\r\n new files are COLORADO.650, INDEX.650, TWETOLIN.E00 and TWETOSHD.E00. These\r\n files were created on a UNIX platform with ARC/INFO 6.1.2. Direct measurement with a Helley-Smith bedload sampler and calculations by the modified-Einstein procedure were used to estimate bedload.
\nSingle equations describe the suspended- and totalsediment transport-rate relations for Chippewa River at Durand and main channel at Pepin, and the Black River near Galesville. Two equations were needed to define the transport- rate relations for the Chippewa River near Caryville and Wisconsin River at Muscoda.
\nBed material at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville were of similar particle size and exhibited little variation with time or location in the river cross sections. Median diameter at these sites ranged from 0.35 to 0.84 mm (millimeter). At Chippewa River near Caryville, median diameter ranged from 0.42 to 15 mm. Helley-Smith bedload at Chippewa River at Durand and near Pepin, Black River near Galesville, and Wisconsin River at Muscoda were of similar particle size. About 57 to 65 percent of bedload at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville was in the 0.4- to 0.6- mm size range. About 50 percent of bedload at Chippewa River near Caryville was in the 0.5- to 1.0-mm size range. Suspended sediment at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville was in the sand-size range; the average median diameters were between 0.17 and 0.22 mm. At Chippewa River near Caryville, 60 percent (on the average) of suspended sediment was finer than 0.062 mm.
\nAverage annual total-sediment load and the percentage transported as bedload were determined for a 10-year period (water years 1974-83)(October 1,1973-September 30, 1982). These loads and percentages were, respectively, 123,000 tons and 35 percent at Chippewa River near Caryville; 1,073,000 tons and 61 percent at Chippewa River at Durand; 940,000 tons and 44 percent at Chippewa River near Pepin; 277,000 tons and 43 percent at Black River near Galesville; and 558,000 tons and 49 percent at Wisconsin River at Muscoda.

Other sources of freshwater are Lake Georgetown and the streams draining the San Gabriel River basin. Lake Georgetown, located on the North Fork San Gabriel River west of Georgetown, is a freshwater supply for some municipalities in the area. Water in the San Gabriel River basin also suppliesa variety of needs east of Georgetown. Because of the importance of the Edwards aquifer and the surface waters as a source of freshwater in the area, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Georgetown, established a local streamflow and ground-water monitoring network in principal streams and teh Edwards aquifer, and conducted surveys of the network in water years 1987, 1988, and 1990. The study area was centered on Georgetown and emcompassed an area of about 150 mi2 (fig. 1).

This investigation was made as part of the Central Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (CMRASA). The CMRASA is one of several major investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey of regional aquifer systems in the United States. These regional investigations are designed to increase knowledge of the flow regime and hydrologic properties of major aquifer systems and to provide quantitative information for the assessment, development, and management water supplies. The CMRASA study area includes all or parts of 10 Central Midwestern States (Jorgensen and Signor, 1981), as shown on the envelope cover.
This Hydrologic Investigations Atlas, which consists of a series of nine chapters, presents a description of the physical framework and the geohydrology of principal aquifers and confining systems in Kansas. Chapter D presents maps that show the areal extent, altitude and configuration of the top, and thickness of Mississippian rocks that compose the upper aquifer unit of the Western Interior Plains aquifer system in Kansas, The chapter is limited to the presentation of the physical framework of the upper aquifer unit. The interpretation of the physical framework of the upper aquifer unit is based on selected geophysical and lithologic logs and published maps of stratigraphically equivalent units. Maps indicating the thickness and the altitude and configuration of the top of the upper aquifer unit in the Western Interior Plains aquifer system have been prepared as part of a series of interrelated maps that describe the stratigraphic interval from the Precambrian basement through Lower Cretaceous rocks. A concerted effort was made to ensure that maps of each geohydrologic unit are consistent with the maps of underlying and overlying units. Chapter A of this atlas series (Wolf and others, 1990) describes the relation of principal geohydrologic systems in Kansas and presents a more detailed discussion of the methods and data used to prepare and ensure consistency among the sets of maps.
