Field studies by the authors began as early as 1973 in the quadrangles, but systematic mapping was not begun until 1988. Systematic mapping remains to be completed for much of the southwest part of the map area and the vicinity of southeastern Cold Bay. Previous geologic mapping in the region, which constitutes an invaluable data base for our studies, was conducted by Kennedy and Waldron (1955). Waldron (1961). Burk (1965). McLean and others (1978), and DuBois and others, 1989.</p><p>Most of the new mapping for this map was done by helicopter-supported foot-traverses and with helicopter spot landings. Coverage of areas between surface observations was made using helicopter overflights and interpretation of vertical aerial photography and Landsat imagery. Field investigations were conducted from bases at Cold Bay (1990), King Cove (1988), and False Pass (1991). In addition, some field work in 1984 was also conducted using the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Don J. The test is constructed to meet four rules, which we propose to be applicable to the test of any method for earthquake prediction: &nbsp;</p><p>1. An earthquake prediction technique should be presented as a well documented, logical algorithm that can be used by &nbsp;investigators without restrictions. </p><p>2. The algorithm should be coded in a common programming language and implementable on widely available computer systems. </p><p>3. A test of the earthquake prediction technique should involve future predictions with a black box version of the algorithm in which potentially adjustable parameters are fixed in advance. The source of the input data must be defined and ambiguities in these data must be resolved automatically by the algorithm. </p><p>4. At least one reasonable null hypothesis should be stated \u0001 in advance of testing the earthquake prediction method, and it should be stated how this null hypothesis will be used to estimate the statistical significance of the earthquake predictions. </p><p>The M8 algorithm has successfully predicted several destructive \u0001 earthquakes, in the sense that the earthquakes occurred inside regions with linear dimensions from 384 to 854 km that the algorithm had identified as being in times of increased probability for strong earthquakes. In addition, M8 has successfully \"post predicted\" high percentages of strong earthquakes in regions to which it has been applied in retroactive studies. The statistical significance of previous predictions has not been established, however, and post-prediction studies in general are notoriously subject to success-enhancement through hindsight. Nor has it been&nbsp;determined how much more precise an M8 prediction might be than forecasts and probability-of-occurrence estimates made by other techniques. This report summarizes an interpretation of those data by providing (1) a description of the relation of suspended sediment, bedload, and total-sediment discharge to water discharge; (2) a description of particle-size characteristics of bed material, bedload, and suspended sediment; and (3) estimates of annual and average annual suspended load, bedload, and total-sediment load for water years 1974-83. Direct measurement with a Helley-Smith bedload sampler and calculations by the modified-Einstein procedure were used to estimate bedload.</p>\n<p>Single equations describe the suspended- and totalsediment transport-rate relations for Chippewa River at Durand and main channel at Pepin, and the Black River near Galesville. Two equations were needed to define the transport- rate relations for the Chippewa River near Caryville and Wisconsin River at Muscoda.</p>\n<p>Bed material at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville were of similar particle size and exhibited little variation with time or location in the river cross sections. Median diameter at these sites ranged from 0.35 to 0.84 mm (millimeter). At Chippewa River near Caryville, median diameter ranged from 0.42 to 15 mm. Helley-Smith bedload at Chippewa River at Durand and near Pepin, Black River near Galesville, and Wisconsin River at Muscoda were of similar particle size. About 57 to 65 percent of bedload at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville was in the 0.4- to 0.6- mm size range. About 50 percent of bedload at Chippewa River near Caryville was in the 0.5- to 1.0-mm size range. Suspended sediment at all sites except Chippewa River near Caryville was in the sand-size range; the average median diameters were between 0.17 and 0.22 mm. At Chippewa River near Caryville, 60 percent (on the average) of suspended sediment was finer than 0.062 mm.</p>\n<p>Average annual total-sediment load and the percentage transported as bedload were determined for a 10-year period (water years 1974-83)(October 1,1973-September 30, 1982). The data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey Bureau, to provide information on variation and movement of agricultural chemicals in the hydrologic cycle in the basin. Precipitation, surface-water, and ground-water data were collected.</p>\n<p>Rainfall recorded during water year 1990 at a monitoring site on Roberts Creek totaled 43.67 inches. The greatest monthly rainfall (14.45 inches) occurred in August. Calcium and sulfate were the predominant ions in the rain, and the median concentrations of nitrate and ammonia as nitrogen were 0.35 and 0.48 milligrams per liter, respectively.</p>\n<p>Stream discharge, specific conductance, pH, and water temperature were monitored continuously, and monthly water-quality samples were collected at three sites in the basin. The predominant ions in samples from Roberts Creek at the point where it leaves the basin were calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. Nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen concentrations in 42 samples ranged from less than 0.10 to 18 milligrams per liter. Pesticide concentrations in 34 samples ranged from less than 0.10 to 12 micrograms per liter. Alachlor was detected in 56 percent of the samples; atrazine in 100 percent; cyanazine in 68 percent; and metolachlor in 47 percent.</p>\n<p>At Big Spring, the ground-water discharge point, the daily mean specific conductance ranged from 378 to 796 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius, the daily median pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.2, and the daily mean water temperature ranged from 5.5 to 11.5 degrees Celsius. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate generally were the predominant ions in solution. Concentrations of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen in 32 samples ranged from 3.4 to 16 milligrams per liter. Alachlor was detected in 22 percent of the samples; atrazine in 100 percent; cyanazine in 44 percent, and metplachlor in 6 percent. The maximum atrazine concentration was 4.5 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>During a low-flow seepage study, May 29 and 30,1990, the measured discharge lost by streams in the basin was 8.56 cubic feet per second, the measured dissolved nitrogen load lost was 0.29 ton per day, and the measured atrazine load lost was 0.028 pound per day. After all or parts of a stream are straightened, dredged, or cleared, systematic hydrologic, geomorphic, and ecologic processes collectively begin to reduce energy conditions towards the premodified state. One hundred and five sites along 15 streams were studied in the Obion, Forked Deer, Hatchie, and Wolf River basins. All studied streams, except the Hatchie River, have had major channel modi@cation along all or parts of their courses.\rBank material shear-strength properties were determined through drained borehole-shear testing (168 tests) and used to interpret present critical bank conditions and factors of safety, and to estimate future channel-bank stability. Mean values of cohesive strength and angle of internal friction were 1.26 pounds per square inch and 30.1 degrees, respectively. Dendrogeomorphic analyses were made using botanical evidence of channel-bank failures to determine rates of channel widening; buried riparian stems were analyzed to determine rates of bank accretion. Channel bed-level changes through time and space were represented by a power equation. Plant ecological analyses were ma& to infer relative bank stability, to identify indicator species of the stage of bank recovery, and to determine patterns of vegetation development through the course of channel evolution. Quantitative data on morphologic changes were used with previously developed six-stage models of channel evolution and bank-slope development to estimate trends of geomorphic and ecologic processes and forms through time.\rImmediately after channel modr@cations, a 10- to 1%yearperiod of channel-bed degradation ensues at and upstream from the most recent modifications (area of maximum disturbance). Channel-bed lowering by &gradation was as much as 20 feet along some stream reaches. Downstream from the area of maximum disturbance, the bed was aggraded by the deposition of sediment supplied by knickpoint migration upstream; aggradation also occurred in initially degraded sites with time. Additionally, if degradation caused an increase in bank height beyond the critical limits of the bank material, a period of channel widening by mass wasting followed. Degradation knickpoints migrated upstream at rates greater than 1 mile per year; the rates attenuated with distance above the area of maximum disturbance. Channel widening rates of up to 16 feet per year were documented along some severely degraded reaches. Planar failures were generally more frequent but rotational failures dominated the most rapidly widening reaches. Total volumes of bank erosion may represent 75percent or more of the total material eroded from the channel, but this material generally exits the drainage basin. Mean factors of safety vary with the stage of channel evolution with the lowest values for planar and rotational failures occurring during the threshold stage (stage IV) 1.00 and 1.15, respectively. As channel gradients decrease, degradation ceases and then a period of ?secondary aggradation ? (at lesser rates than degradation) and bank accretion begins that may fill the channel to near floodplain level. This shift@ in process represents an oscillation in channel bed-level adjustment. Streams in basins underlain by loess may require an order of magnitude more time than sand-bed streams to stabilize due to a lack of coarse-grained material (sand) for aggradation.\rA systematic progression of riparian species that reflects the six-stage model of channel evolution has been identified. This progression can be used to infer ambient channel stability and hydrogeomorphic conditions. Woody vegetation establishes on low- and mid-bank surfaces (the slough line, initially) at about the same time that bank accretion begins. This slough line forms at a mean temporary stability angle of 24 degrees and expands upslope with time by the accretion of sediments.
