It is 37 miles by highway north of Homer and 51 miles south of Kenai, the two principal towns of the region (fig. 1). The localities studied are in sections 2, 3, 10, and 11, T. 2 S., R. 14 W. (Seward meridian), south and west of Deep Creek within 2 miles of its mouth, and were easily reached by cutting about a mile of tractor trail from a dirt road connecting with the Sterling Highway (pl. 1). This area was chosen for detailed study because geologic mapping had indicated the presence of at least one coal bed of minable thickness and quality that appeared to be favorably situated for strip mining and was reasonably accessible to the highway.</p><p>This report presents the results of drilling and trenching with a bulldozer and power-auger unit in areas along Deep Creek that had been mapped by Cobb (1952) and briefly examined by Barnes in 1953. The reader is referred to Cobb's report for a general description of the geology and coal resources of the Homer district, of which this area is a part. These earlier investigations showed that the coal-bearing Kenai formation, of Tertiary age, is generally covered by Quaternary glacial and stream deposits, except in steep bluffs and parts of the creek bed, so that subsurface data were needed to supplement the surface data in evaluating the coal reserves.</p><p>The field work for this report was done in the period August 130, 1954, by the writers, assisted by A. E. Burford and W. S. Hopkins, geologists, and J. W. Dawson, operator-mechanic. It involved the use of a small crawler tractor, equipped with a 4-1/2 inch power auger for boring through the overburden to test concealed coal beds, and with a bulldozer for building access roads and opening cuts and trenches to permit direct observation and measurement of the coal at favorable localities. A more detailed description of the equipment and its use is given elsewhere (Barnes and Sokol, 1955). Work was done at two localities on Deep Creek, about 1 mile and 1-1/2 miles, respectively, above the highway bridge. Feldspar and quartz crystals locally attain a length of more than 1 foot. Some muscovite mica up to 2 inches in diameter occurs, but the major part of the mica is contained in concentrations, containing mica flakes one-half inch across, that often are as large as 10 feet across. Ruby mica of strategic grade has been obtained from float from this deposit.</p><p>None of the rarer minerals such as beryl, columbite-tantalite or cassiterite that often occur in pegmatites were observed in the preliminary examination; and small-size concentrate samples obtained by panning stream sands from the area did not contain recognizable amounts of these rarer minerals. One sample contained a few grains identified as cassiterite. No radioactive anomalies were detected in the pegmatites, or in the stream concentrates.</p><p>The large tonnage of material available arid the favorable location by a good anchorage on an ocean route are favorable factors that should contribute to the development of the deposits. This area has been one of the major sources of sheet mica in the United States, especially between 1906 and 1911, and it has been a significant source of potash-feldspar, beryl and spodumene.</p><p>The area is part of the much larger area of pegmatites and metamorphic rocks to the north and east that surround Harney Peak and extend throughout the southern part of the pre-Cambrian core of the Black Hills. It is bounded on the south by the Wind River and Warm Spring Creek, which flow along the northeast flank of the Wind River Mountains, and on the north by the steep scarps of the southern margin of the Absaroka Mountains. Rugged mountainous terrain dominates both the southwest and northern portions of the mapped area while badland topography and deeply dissected upland surfaces characterize the central part. One of the most significant physiographic and structural features of the region is a belt of folded and faulted Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, referred to as the Washakie Range, which lies along the southern margin of the Absaroka Mountains. These highlands, attaining elevations of es much as 10,000 feet, were buried by Tertiary volcanic debris and subsequently partly exhumed as the Wind River Basin was reexcavated by Wind River and its tributaries.</p><p>The sedimentary rocks exposed in the Du Noir area are more than 12,500 feet thick and range in age from Cambrian to Recent. All systems, with the exception of the Silurian, are represented. Precambrian granite and granite gneiss are present in both the Wind River and Washakie Ranges.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Samples were collected from soil and decomposed limestone-and-schist bedrock at depths ranging from 18 inches to 60 inches, by means of a pipe with an interior plunger.</p><p>Initial sampling was followed by detailed sampling of the areas where the antimony content of the soils consistently averaged more than 300 ppm. These Areas of major soil concentrations were prospected by surface trenching and percussion drilling to depths of 20 feet which proved the existence of stibnite ore. Next a shaft and drifts made in the most favorable area proved disseminated stibnite ore to depths of 60 feet.</p><p>This geochemical work of soil sampling to indicate hidden ore bodies in a typical Alaskan muskeg area is believed to be the first application in Alaska of such techniques in active ore exploration. The results show the economic feasibility of such exploration as a first step in extending the known boundaries of mineralized areas, and in directing initial exploration toward the most favorable areas of near-surface ore bodies.</p><p>Data are presented to help establish values of soil content of antimony that may be considered as normal in this type of geologic It is on the west side of Latouche Island about two miles southwest of the old mining camp of Latouche. Pyrite deposits crop out about one-half mile from the head of the bay (see fig. 1) and in the lower part of a broad basin-like valley at altitudes between 125 feet and 650 feet. The valley, which is a mile wide and two miles long, is open to the see on the northwest side and is bordered on the northeast, southeast and southwest by a high sharp-crested ridge that reaches a maximum altitude of 2,255 feet. The area can easily be reached by chartered small boat or float plane from Cordova or other towns in this part of Alaska. The five Eskimo villages--Kwethluk, Hooper Bay, Chevak, Tununak, and Kwigillingok--are in western Alaska between the lower reaches of the two rivers. (See sketch page two). Diatomaceous earth is an unconsolidated earthy deposit formed by accumulation of the minute siliceous tests (skeletons) of diatoms, a type of algae. Diatomaceous earth is sometimes referred to as diatomite.</p><p>The largest and purest of these deposits was mapped and sampled in detail. As a specialized technique in interpretation and mapping, however, photogeologic procedures were extensively used (1947-1953) in the Survey's geologic mapping of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska and in mapping part of the Colorado Plateau of western United States, principally in Utah (1951-present). Photogeologic work was performed by a specialized group of geologists that was organized as the Photogeology Section in June 1953. This group has more recently made studies of northeastern Utah, southern and southeastern Alaska, and central Alaska. Various photogeologic procedures have been used in these studies; some procedures have been modified, and new ones have been developed. It is primarily the purpose of this paper to discuss these procedures. During 1948 to 1950, the Geological Survey studied and mapped the pegmatites in an area of about 58 square miles near Middletown. The primary objectives of the mapping were to determine beryllium resources of the Middletown area, and to ascertain relationships of beryl-bearing pegmatites to non-beryl-bearing pegmatites and to The data have been tabulated and prepared for release at this time so that they may be used by those concerned with the development and use of ground-water supplies in the area. A comprehensive report analyzing and interpreting the basic data is being prepared and will be released in the future.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
