Field studies by the authors began as early as 1973 in the quadrangles, but systematic mapping was not begun until 1988. Systematic mapping remains to be completed for much of the southwest part of the map area and the vicinity of southeastern Cold Bay. Previous geologic mapping in the region, which constitutes an invaluable data base for our studies, was conducted by Kennedy and Waldron (1955). Waldron (1961). Burk (1965). McLean and others (1978), and DuBois and others, 1989.</p><p>Most of the new mapping for this map was done by helicopter-supported foot-traverses and with helicopter spot landings. Coverage of areas between surface observations was made using helicopter overflights and interpretation of vertical aerial photography and Landsat imagery. Field investigations were conducted from bases at Cold Bay (1990), King Cove (1988), and False Pass (1991). In addition, some field work in 1984 was also conducted using the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Don J. Measurements taken at 15-minute intervals included near-surface and near-bottom specific conductance; near-surface water temperature; and near-surface, mid-depth, and near-bottom dissolved-oxygen concentrations. In the Pamlico River estuary, salinities generally ranged from near zero to about 20 parts per thousand during the period April 1989 through September 1991; however, unnaturally high salinities (up to about 51 parts per thousand) were observed at one site on July 11, 1990. Recorded water temperatures in the Pamlico River were between 0 and 33 degrees Celsius during the measurement period. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 20 milligrams per liter. In the Neuse River estuary, salinities ranged from less than 0.1 to nearly 33 parts per thousand between May 1989 and September 1991. During the same period, recorded water temperatures in this estuary were between 0 and 33 degrees Celsius. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 21 milligrams per liter. Instantaneous values for selected periods are summarized in a series of box plots. Daily mean values of salinity, water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentrations, and dissolved oxygen, percent saturation, are presented in tables and graphs, as are 5-day mean values for day and night conditions. S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in Kansas is to investigate the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of surface and ground water throughout the State. Primary activities include the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrologic data, evaluation of water demands, and water-resources research. Four types of hydrologic investigations are conducted: (1) data-collection activities, (2) statewide or regbnal investigations, (3) local or areal investigations, and (4) research. These studies are funded through joint-funding agreements with State and local agencies, transfer of funds from other Federal agencies, and direct Federal funds. </p><p>Forty water-related studies were ongoing during fiscal years 1989 through 1991 in Kansas. This report describes for each study the problem that initiated the study, the objectives of the study, the approach designed to achieve the objectives, and significant milestones and publications that resulted during fiscal years 1989-91. Information on more than 1,800 data-collection stations in Kansas is presented in maps and tables. A list of 81 reports and abstracts published or released by the U.S. Geological Survey, its cooperators, or technical and scientific organizations during calendar years 1989, 1990, and 1991 is
