During June 1954, the Shaktolik River was traversed by boat from near the confluence of Brass Pan Creek to Norton Sound. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 182 wells in 6 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements covering the period 1941 through 1952 have been published in U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers; those for 1953 are in press and have already been released locally in duplicated form. Water-Supply Paper 1068 contains tabulated descriptions for 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the various ground-water basins of the county. The same publication contains also many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific GAB and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Time River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1108 100U. and 1110-B respectively. In October 1952 \"Reports on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity, Santa Ynez River, Santa Barbara Count, Calif.,\" prepared respectively by Messrs. H. C. Troxell of the Surface Water Branch and H. D. Wilson, Jr., of the Ground hater Branch, U. S. The relocated segment provides access to the Rocky Flats plant of the Atomic Energy Commission. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>The geologic conditions along five miles of the relocation route were examined. &nbsp;In most places apparently well-indurated sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous Fox Hills sandstone and Laramie formation can be excavated without using explosives. The records. of 15 wells and 5 sprints are given, as are t he sample-study legs of 3 test wells drilled at the site of a planned industrial labratory. A geologic map revised some-what from a published map by Cloos and Broedel is included (fig. 1).</p>\n<p>The study of the hydrology in the vicinity of Simpsonville was undertaken as a part of the ground-water investigations in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources. It provides ground-water data in addition to those already available, as a basis for a decision by the Maryland Water Resources Commission in regard to the application of an industrial laboratory to appropriate 200,000 gallons of ground water a day at a site about half a mile northwest of Simpsonville (approximately 12 miles southwest of Baltimore). Data relating to the Ladder Creek project in Greeley, Gove, Lane, Logan, Scott, Wallace, and Wichita Counties will be published later in a separate report.</p><p>This report is the eighth of a series of annual reports on ground-water in the above-named units in Kansas and contains the data collected during 1954. The first report of the series contained the data collected prior to and through 1947. Sodiwm montmoillonite, on the other hand, characteristically swells in water to many times its dry volume. Calcium and magnesium montmorillonite and the hydrous micas, or so called illites, fall between these two extremes in swelling properties, but are, in general, much closer to kaolinite than to sodium montmorillonite in their increase in volume on hydration.
