The long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to (1) describe current water-quality conditions for a large part of the Nation's freshwater streams, rivers, and aquifers; (2) describe how water quality is changing over time; and (3) improve understanding of the primary natural and human factors that affect water-quality conditions (Leahy and others, 1990). To meet these goals, 60 study units representing the Nation's most important river basins and aquifers are being investigated. The program design balances the unique assessment requirements of individual study units with a nationally consistent design structure that incorporates a multiscale, interdisciplinary approach for assessment of surface and ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs19196","usgsCitation":"Spahr, N.E., Driver, N.E., and Stephens, V.C., 1996, The Upper Colorado River; National Water-Quality Assessment Program; surface-water-monitoring network: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 191-96, 3 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs19196.","productDescription":"3 p.","costCenters":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34177,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0191/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.8 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 191-96"},{"id":117956,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0191/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4880e4b07f02db515e3d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spahr, Norman E. nspahr@usgs.gov","contributorId":1977,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spahr","given":"Norman","email":"nspahr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":153466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Driver, Nancy E.","contributorId":67858,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Driver","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153468,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stephens, Verlin C.","contributorId":34479,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stephens","given":"Verlin","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In contrast, for a nonoxygenated gasoline, the total hydrocarbon solubility in water is typically about 120 milligrams per liter. MTBE sorbs only weakly to soil and aquifer materials; therefore, sorption will not significantly retard MTBE's transport by ground water. In addition, MTBE generally resists degradation in ground water. The half-life of MTBE in the atmosphere can be as short as 3 days in a regional airshed. MTBE in the air tends to partition into atmospheric water, including precipitation. However, washout of gas-phase MTBE by precipitation would not, by itself, greatly alter the gas-phase concentration of the compound in the air. The partitioning of MTBE to precipitation is nevertheless strong enough to allow for up to 3 micrograms per liter or more inputs of MTBE to surface and ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs20396","usgsCitation":"Squillace, P.J., Pankow, J.F., Korte, N.E., and Zogorski, J.S., 1996, Environmental behavior and fate of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 203-96, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs20396.","productDescription":"6 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":34056,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0203/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":117836,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0203/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db6025a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Squillace, Paul J.","contributorId":59415,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Squillace","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pankow, James F.","contributorId":72253,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pankow","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153018,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Korte, Nic E.","contributorId":100684,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Korte","given":"Nic","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153019,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Zogorski, John S. jszogors@usgs.gov","contributorId":189,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zogorski","given":"John","email":"jszogors@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":153016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The function of the wetland as a retention system for suspended sediments and nutrients (total and dissolved phosphorus, total ammonia plus organic nitrogen, dissolved ammonia, and nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen) was studied from February 1993 through September 1995. Input and output load computations were based on water flow (discharge) measurements and periodic sampling of suspended sediments and nutrients at the three inflowing streams and at the wetland outflow. Results of the study indicated consistent sediment retention throughout the year; at times, as much as 80 percent of the inflow load was retained in the wetland. Nutrient retention was generally of lesser magnitude and much more variable. Although the annual budgets confirm net retention for all nutrient forms except ammonia, data analysis over shorter time scales show that outflow loads actually can exceed inflow loads during the late spring and summer months the period of greatest likelihood of algal blooms in the lake. This result demonstrates that the nutrient-trapping function of the wetland is variable because of the complexity of the system. Twelve different VOC’s were detected. Chloroform was the most commonly detected VOC (found in 12 wells), whereas the highest measured VOC concentration was 39 micrograms per liter of 1,1-dichloroethane. No VOC had a measured concentration in ground water that exceeded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency national drinking-water standard or guideline. Slightly more than fifty percent of the shallow wells in urban settings, as compared to six percent of the shallow wells in agricultural settings, had at least one VOC detected.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs13896","usgsCitation":"Fenelon, J.M., and Moore, R.C., 1996, Occurrence of Radon concentrations in the shallow wells ranged from 140 to 1,600 pCi/L (picocuries per liter); the median concentration was 420 pCi/L. In comparison, analyses of the samples from the nine deep wells indicate that radon concentrations decrease with depth within the fluvial aquifers; the median concentration was 210 pCi/L. No areal trends in radon concentrations are evident in the water of the shallow fluvial aquifers of the basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological For example, concentrations of atrazine, a herbicide widely used on corn in the White River Basin, tended to be higher in an agricultural basin with permeable, well-drained soils, than in an agricultural basin with less permeable, more poorly drained soils. Concentrations of butylate, another herbicide used on corn, were substantially higher in an agricultural basin in the southern part of the White River Basin than in an agricultural basin in the central part of the White River Basin, corresponding to the higher use of this compound in southern Indiana. Concentrations of diazinon were substantially higher in a predominantly urban basin than in two predominantly agricultural basins, corresponding to the common use of this insecticide on lawns and gardens in urban areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs11996","usgsCitation":"Crawford, C.G., 1996, Influence of As sheetflow is reestablished by flow management in the wetlands of the Everglades, it is expected that changes will also be reflected in the amount of freshwater exiting the mainland through the principal streams or as sheetflow into Florida Bay. Several agencies, including the USGS and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), are planning to use hydrologic models to simulate and predict the flows into Florida Bay and the circulation patterns within the bay itself. These models can then be used to determine the effects that management of the inland water system will have on the amount of freshwater the bay receives from the mainland. Restoration of hydropatterns requires knowledge of the original pre-canal drainage conditions as well as an understanding of the soil, topo-graphic, and vegetation changes that have taken place since canal drainage began in the 1880's.\r\n\r\nThe Natural System Model (NSM), developed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and Everglades National Park, uses estimates of pre-drainage vegetation and topography to estimate the pre-drainage hydrologic response of the Everglades. Sources of model uncertainty include: (1) the algorithms, (2) the parameters (particularly those relating to vegetation roughness and evapotranspiration), and (3) errors in the assumed pre-drainage vegetation distribution and pre-drainage topography. Other studies are concentrating on algorithmic and parameter sources of uncertainty.\r\n\r\nIn this study we focus on the NSM output -- predicted hydropattern -- and evaluate this by comparison with all available direct and indirect information on pre-drainage hydropatterns. The unpublished and published literature is being searched exhaustively for observations of water depth, flow direction, flow velocity and hydroperiod, during the period prior and just after drainage (1840-1920).\r\n\r\nAdditionally, a comprehensive map of soils in the Everglades region, prepared in the 1940's by personnel from the University of Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Everglades Drainage District, is being used to identify wetland soils and to infer the spatial distribution of pre-drainage hydrologic conditions. Detailed study of this map and other early soil and vegetation maps in light of the history of drainage activities will reveal patterns of change and possible errors in the input to the NSM. Changes in the wetland soils are important because of their effects on topography (soil subsidence) and in their role as indicators of hydropattern.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs18796","usgsCitation":"McVoy, C., Park, W.A., and Obeysekera, J., 1996, Comparison of the South Florida natural system model with pre-canal Everglades hydrology estimated from historical sources: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 187-96, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs18796.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":563,"text":"South Florida Information Access","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34092,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0187/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.17 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 197-96"},{"id":124529,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0187/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -82.19970703125,\n 24.37712083961039\n ],\n [\n -79.881591796875,\n 24.37712083961039\n ],\n [\n -79.881591796875,\n 26.735799020431674\n ],\n [\n -82.19970703125,\n 26.735799020431674\n ],\n [\n -82.19970703125,\n 24.37712083961039\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab64f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McVoy, Christopher","contributorId":62580,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McVoy","given":"Christopher","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Park, Winifred A.","contributorId":29405,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Park","given":"Winifred","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153173,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Obeysekera, Jayantha 0000-0002-9261-1268","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9261-1268","contributorId":27433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Obeysekera","given":"Jayantha","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Both submersed and emergent vegetation are found in sawgrass and cattail marshes, wet prairies, and sloughs. The south Florida ecosystem has been greatly altered during the last 100 years. A complex water-management system that includes levees, canals, pumps, and water-control structures now regulates flooding and provides a steady supply of fresh water to urban areas and agriculture. Drainage projects have diverted much of the water that originally flowed slowly southward from Lake Okeechobee through the Everglades. Restoration and management of the Everglades ecosystem requires understanding and manipulating the amount and timing of water flows throughout the ecosystem.

The spatial and temporal distribution of water and water-borne contaminants in the Everglades must be understood if degradation of the ecosystem is to be halted and reversed. To understand how water moves through the Everglades, it is necessary to quantify the forces affecting the flow. The resistance exerted on the flow by the vegetation through which the water moves is one of the dominant but least understood forces affecting Everglades surface-water flows.

The aquatic vegetation of the Everglades affects both the depth of water and the rate at which it moves. The presence of living and dead plant material in the water column creates drag forces on the moving water. Water flows most slowly and the water-surface slope is largest in areas where vegetation is most dense.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs14796","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1996, Vegetation affects water movement in the Florida Everglades: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 147-96, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs14796.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":32060,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0147/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.14 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 147-96"},{"id":123078,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0147/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.8206787109375,\n              25.045792240303445\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              25.045792240303445\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              26.504988828743404\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.8206787109375,\n              26.504988828743404\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.8206787109375,\n              25.045792240303445\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","tableOfContents":"

Introdution

Plan of Study

Indoor Flume Experiments

Field Measurements

Initial Results

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db6027e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528584,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
