From 1950 to the present date the Ground Water Branch, U.S. Geological Survey, has been collecting data about the ground-water supply in the Sells area, at the request of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Papago Indian Agency. The purpose of these studies has been to aid in locating and developing additional ground-water supplies for the community of Sells, the agency headquarters. four project area in Connecticut during the year ended June 30, 1954. Substantial progress was made in the collection of basic water information in the lower Farmington River basin. Both surface and subsurface geological area were assembled for use by prospective well owners. The preparation of a report on the geology and ground-water resources of the agricultural area of north-central Connecticut was continued during the year. As a continuation of investigations on the ground-water resources of the industrial areas of New Haven and Waterbury, observations of water level and samples of water were taken bi-monthly from 5 well at 5 industrial plants in Waterbury and anaysed for sulfate concentration in order to measure the degree of infiltration of acid-contaminated water to the water-bearing formations.

Its main purpose is to present a brief analysis of those phases of the local water supply associated with the work of the Geological Survey. The first part of this review deals with the water resources for the water year ending September 30, 1953. It contains a brief analysis of the annual precipitation, the provisional runoff at a few stations, the changes in water reserves both in surface reservoirs and underground, and the imported waters. It concludes by pointing out the deficiences in the local water reserves. This bulletin has been prepared by the Surface Water Branch; the section on ground-water conditions was prepared chiefly from information supplied by the Ground Hater Branch.

Discharge records were obtained at four points along the channels. This water was transported down the channels of Pecan Creek and Elm Fork Trinity River to Lake Dallas, a distance of about 31 miles.

The periodic rise and fall of the tide may result in a corresponding periodic change in salinity at a sampling location on the tidal river. When the fresh water discharge is low, saline water may intrude up-river, and any factor changing the relative elevations of the ocean and the mean river level has an effect on the extent of salt-water intrusion. Variations in water composition between samples taken at several locations up or down river, at different depths, or at several locations across the stream are likely to be more pronounced than for similar sets of samples from a non-tidal stream. The nature of these variations and factors responsible for them are discussed, and the need for consideration of them in planning a sampling routine is stressed. The nature and mechanism of ocean-water intrusion in tidal rivers is discussed and sampling procedures for its detection are described. lllustrative examples - mostly from the work of the United States Geological Survey or State agencies - show various methods for correlating and presenting data from quality-of-water surveys of tidal rivers. Each tidal river presents an individual problem which can best be understood from a study of the factors involved. To that end the report is supplemented by an annotated bibliography of selected publications in the field.

The valley of Matanuska River and the lowland extending westward from it to the Susitna River are in the Matanuska and Wasilla districts as defined by P.S. Smith (1939, pl. 3). The area described by this thesis, hereafter termed the Matanuska Valley agricultural area, is best known as including the site of agricultural colonization undertaken by the Federal Government in 1935. It is bounded on the north by the Talkeetna Mountains and Little Susitna River, and on the south by Knik River and Knik Arm (plate 1). It lies between Eska Creek on the northeast and Goose Bay on the southwest. As thus defined the area lies approximately between 148°55' and 149°50' west longitude and between 61°25' and 61°45' north latitude; it covers about 350 square miles.
