This work was done to obtain geologic and seismic data that would aid in establishing grade for a segment of Route 138 between stations 169 and 180, and that would also be of value in estimating the nature and quantities of subsurface materials to be estimating the nature and quantities of subsurface materials to be excavated from the proposed cut. The work was performed in August 1952, as part of a cooperative program pf the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and the United States Geological Survey.

This will place it close to the base of a mound of granite quarry waste with very steep slopes. As a cut of considerable depth will be required for the road, the mound of waste with its unstable slope constitutes a very hazardous condition, especially with respect to the possibility of rock-falls and slides. Seismic work was performed at the site with the two aims in view; firstly, to obtain information on depths to bedrock that would aid in estimating the quantities of materials to be removed from the proposed cut, secondly, to obtain data that might aid in estimating the quantity of material in the mound of quarry waste with the object of obtaining estimates for its removal. Transverses A-13 and C-D were made for this latter purpose. Additional transverses would have been of value, but they were not made because of the possibility of starting rock-falls or slides, a situation that would have exposed personnel to unwarranted danger, and equipment to avoidable risk.

Carney, Massachusetts Department of Public Works' Engineers, performed pertinent survey work required for this project, and prepared the essential plans and profiles. Mr. Chandler also operated the seismic equipment and assisted in the preparation of the seismic velocity data.

Six seismic profiles were made at this time and a report on this work was transmitted by James E. Maynard and Russell F. Kaiser. The seismic data obtained at this time was derived from a continuous series of profiles approximately parallel to, and from 25 to 60 feet to the west of, the base line. These transverses explored the deepest part of the prospective cut, but did not furnish enough detailed information to permit sufficiently accurate estimates to be made of the quantities of materials to be excavated. This information required an additional, continuous series of seismic profiles made along the base line, and a series of single seismic profiles made across the base line at suitable intervals; this work was performed in August 1953 as part of a cooperative program of the United States Geological Survey and the Massachusetts Department of Public Works.

Mr. M. E. Chandler and Mr. W. L. Carney, Department of Public Works Engineers, performed all pertinent survey work required for this project, and prepared the essential plans and profiles. Mr. Chandler also operated the seismic equipment and assisted in the preparation of the seismic velocity data.

The studies of the ground-water resources in the part of Kansas that lies within the Missouri River basin have been coordinated with the cooperative program of ground water studies which were already being made in Kansas by the U. S. Geological Survey, the State Geological Survey of Kansas, the Division of Sanitation of the Kansas State Board of Health, and the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture.
Areas in which ground-water data have been and are being collected are the following: Almena unit in Norton and Phillips Counties; Bostwick unit in Jewell, Republic, and Cloud Counties; Cedar Bluff unit in Ellis, Rush, and Trego Counties; Glen Elder unit in Mitchell County; Kanopolis unit in Ellsworth, McPherson, and Saline Counties; Kirwin unit in Phillips, Smiths and Osborne Counties; St. Francis unit in Cheyenne County; Webster unit in Osborne County; and Wilson unit in Lincoln County. (See fig. 1.) Data relating to the Ladder Creek project in Greeley, Gove, Lane, Logan, Scott, Wallace, and Wichita Counties will be published later in a separate report.

Three observation wells were established, of which one, NI 3, had observations continued on the statewide program in 1952. Cooperation with the town was conducted in 1950. In December 1949 the State of Delaware, through the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware and the Highway Department, cooperated with the U.S. Geological Survey for the purpose of making of a reconnaissance study of ground water within the State. In the fall of 1950, under the cooperative agreement with the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware, 13 water-table wells were established for measurement. Beginning July 1, 1951, cooperation transferred to the Delaware Geological Survey of the University of Delaware, and measurement s continued the remainder of the year. Cooperation was also established with the Delaware Geological Survey representing the city of Newark for a detailed study of the Newark area.
