Geologic and seismic studies were made at this site in October 1961 primarily for obtaining data that would aid in estimating the quantities of materials to be excavated from the cut required for the construction of Route 3. A report in the geology of the site together with the interpretation of the seismic data that were obtained at this time was submitted by Robert O. Castle and Robert M. Haslewood (file report of October 1951). Additional seismic work was performed at this site in July 1953. This later work was done to obtain information that would help in planning for the construction of the inner and outer loops of the northwest ramp, and the western approach of Route 62 to Route 3. This report contains the geologic interpretation of the supplementary seismic data that were obtained during the July 1953 survey. The work was performed as a part of a cooperative project of the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and the United States Geological Survey.

Mr. M. E. Chandler and Mr. W. L. Carney, Department of Public Works' Engineers, performed all pertinent survey work required for this project, and prepared the essential plans and profiles. Mr. Chandler also operated the seismic equipment and assisted in the preparation of the seismic velocity data.

This report contains a description of the rainfall pattern producing the flood of April 12, 13, 1954, in the Bull Creek watershed, the results of indirect determinations of peak discharges and estimates of flows at several points in that watershed, and a comparison of the peak stage at the discontinued gaging station on Bull Creek near Ira, Tex., with other floods on record. Field work consisted of transit-stadia surveys at five locations to develop high-water profiles and cross-sections, performed within two weeks after flood occurred.

Ground-water studies in the Missouri River basin were begun by the United States Geological Survey during the fall of 1945 as a part of a program for the development of the resources of the basin by the United States Bureau of Reclamation and other Federal Agencies. The studies of the ground-water resources in the part of Kansas that lies within the Missouri River basin have been coordinated with the cooperative program of ground water studies which were already being made in Kansas by the U. S. Geological Survey, the State Geological Survey of Kansas, the Division of Sanitation of the Kansas State Board of Health, and the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture.

Areas in which ground-water data have been and are being collected are the following: Almena unit in Norton and Phillips Counties; Bostwick unit in Jewell, Republic, and Cloud Counties; Cedar Bluff unit in Ellis, Rush, and Trego Counties; Glen Elder unit in Mitchell County; Kanopolis unit in Ellsworth, McPherson, and Saline Counties; Kirwin unit in Phillips, Smiths and Osborne Counties; St. Francis unit in Cheyenne County; Webster unit in Osborne County; and Wilson unit in Lincoln County. (See fig. 1.) Data relating to the Ladder Creek project in Greeley, Gove, Lane, Logan, Scott, Wallace, and Wichita Counties will be published later in a separate report.

Three observation wells were established, of which one, NI 3, had observations continued on the statewide program in 1952. Cooperation with the town was conducted in 1950. In December 1949 the State of Delaware, through the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware and the Highway Department, cooperated with the U.S. Geological Survey for the purpose of making of a reconnaissance study of ground water within the State. In the fall of 1950, under the cooperative agreement with the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Delaware, 13 water-table wells were established for measurement. Beginning July 1, 1951, cooperation transferred to the Delaware Geological Survey of the University of Delaware, and measurement s continued the remainder of the year. Cooperation was also established with the Delaware Geological Survey representing the city of Newark for a detailed study of the Newark area. The availability of adequate supplies of water of suitable quality determines in large measure the potential for industrial development in any community. However, the pattern of availability of water for industrial use is not so generally recognized. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the more important factors affecting the distribution and quality of existing and potential sources of water with particular reference to industrial development.

From a nation-wide standpoint our country is blessed with plenty of water. If the available water could be distributed completely in accordance with needs, it is probable that no part of the country would suffer from lack of water either now or in the foreseeable future. As nature has not dealt so providently however, or perhaps as man has not been able to cope with the vagaries of nature, we find ourselves beset with droughts and floods. Added to the natural deficiencies of nature are man-made difficulties such as lowered ground-water tables and salt-water encroachment of fresh water supplies resulting from overpumping of ground waters, pollution in all its forms, and wasteful use of water for many purposes. It becomes necessary, therefore, to study and evaluate our most important natural resource in order that we may use it more intelligently. This is particularly true in regard to continued industrial growth of our country.
