Its main purpose is to present a brief analysis of those phases of the local water supply associated with the work of the Geological Survey. The first part of this review deals with the water resources for the water year ending September 30, 1953. It contains a brief analysis of the annual precipitation, the provisional runoff at a few stations, the changes in water reserves both in surface reservoirs and underground, and the imported waters. It concludes by pointing out the deficiences in the local water reserves. Discharge records were obtained at four points along the channels. A report on the geology of the site together with the interpretation of the seismic data that were obtained at this time was submitted by James E. Maynard and Robert M. Haslewood (file report of October 1952). Additional seismic work was performed at this site in Maroh 1953; Mr. M. E. Chandler, Engineer, Massachusetts Department of Public Works, operated seismic equipment at this time. This later work was done to obtain information that would augment the data of the preliminary survey sufficiently to permit estimates to be made of the quantities of materials to be excavated from the cut. This report contains the geologic interpretation of the supplementary seismic data that were obtained during the Maroh 1953 survey. The study of tidal rivers is beset with many complexities not present in the investigation of non-tidal rivers. The periodic rise and fall of the tide may result in a corresponding periodic change in salinity at a sampling location on the tidal river. When the fresh water discharge is low, saline water may intrude up-river, and any factor changing the relative elevations of the ocean and the mean river level has an effect on the extent of salt-water intrusion. Variations in water composition between samples taken at several locations up or down river, at different depths, or at several locations across the stream are likely to be more pronounced than for similar sets of samples from a non-tidal stream. The nature of these variations and factors responsible for them are discussed, and the need for consideration of them in planning a sampling routine is stressed. The nature and mechanism of ocean-water intrusion in tidal rivers is discussed and sampling procedures for its detection are described. lllustrative examples - mostly from the work of the United States Geological Survey or State agencies - show various methods for correlating and presenting data from quality-of-water surveys of tidal rivers. Each tidal river presents an individual problem which can best be understood from a study of the factors involved. This report contains only the results of the geologic and seismic studies that were made for the purpose of obtaining information that would aid in the construction of the inner and outer loops of the southeast ramp. The studies represent part of a cooperative program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and the United States Geological Survey. The work was performed in July 1953.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The site is located in the Wilmington and Lexington 7-1/2-minute quadrangle maps of the United States Geological Survey. Mr. M. E. Chandler and Mr. W. L. Carney, Massachusetts Department of Public works' Engineers, performed all pertinent survey work required for this project, and prepared the essential plans and profiles.
