They are contained in many commercial products such as gasoline, paints, adhesives, solvents, wood preservatives, dry-cleaning agents, pesticides, cosmetics, correction fluid, and refrigerants. Approximately 15 million pounds of VOC’s were released to the atmosphere in the focused study area (fig. 1) in 1992 by facilities registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Millions of additional pounds of VOC’s are emitted to the atmosphere and to land and water by smaller unregistered users of these compounds in the focused study One element of the restoration effort is the development of a firm scientific basis for resource decision making. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), one of the agencies, provides scientific information as part of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Program. The USGS began their own program, called the South Florida Ecosystem Program, in fiscal year 1995 for the purpose of gathering hydrologic, cartographic, and geologic data that relate to the mainland of south Florida, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys and Reef ecosystems.

Over the years, the construction of canals and levees has altered the natural hydrologic conditions of the Everglades. The canals and levees were constructed to convey water, prevent flooding, and store water in conservation areas for future use. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) in Jacksonville, Fla., is planning to construct gated spillways and culverts to allow for the restoration of natural sheetflow conditions to Everglades National Park (ENP). These proposed changes may further affect the hydrologic conditions of ENP and other parts of the ecosystem, thus leading to the following questions:

Is ground water flowing to Biscayne Bay a significant component of the water budget in south Florida?

Would the quantity of ground water flowing to Biscayne Bay be greatly affected by changes in the operation of gates and control structures in canals?

How much change in ground-water discharges to Biscayne Bay has occurred due to modifications to the hydrologic system?

Federal, State, and local agencies need to know the effect that changes in the operation of gates and control structures in canals will have on the water-budget components of the natural water systems in south Florida, including ground-water flow to Biscayne Bay.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs13196","usgsCitation":"South Florida Ecosystem Program; ground-water discharges to Biscayne Bay; 1996; FS; 131-96; Quinones-Aponte, Vicente","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":117295,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_131_96.jpg"},{"id":793,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0131/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.69995508465435,\n              26.6587729618319\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.69995508465435,\n              25.145410427425105\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.85441995142408,\n              25.145410427425105\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.85441995142408,\n              26.6587729618319\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.69995508465435,\n              26.6587729618319\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","publishedDate":"1996-10-01","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1996-10-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7486","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quinones-Aponte, Vicente","contributorId":48552,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Quinones-Aponte","given":"Vicente","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153307,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water samples were collected for nitrate analysis from 103 monitoring wells in four networks in the basin. Ninety-four \"shallow\" wells were screened near the top of the uppermost aquifer encountered; the remaining 9 wells were paired with shallow wells but screened 18 to 45 feet deeper. Samples from 6.4 percent of the shallow wells exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Maximum Contaminant Level of 10 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Elevated nitrate concentrations (higher than 3 mg/L) were common in unconfined, permeable deposits underlying agricultural areas; nitrate concentrations decreased with depth in these deposits. Low nitrate concentrations (less than 0.05 mg/L) were found in aquifers confined by clay-rich tills that retard downward movement of nitrate and oxygen into the ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs11096","usgsCitation":"Moore, R.C., and Fenelon, J.M., 1996, Occurrence of The landscape diversity and subtropical setting of this ecosystem provide a habitat for an abundance of plants and wildlife, some of which are unique to South Florida. South Florida wetlands are currently in crisis, however, due to the combined effects of agriculture, urbanization, and nearly 100 years of water management. Serious problems facing this ecosystem include (1) phosphorus contamination producing nutrient enrichment, which is causing changes in the native vegetation, (2) methylmercury contamination of fish and other wildlife, which poses a potential threat to human health, (3) changes in the natural flow of water in the region, resulting in more frequent drying of wetlands, loss of organic soils, and a reduction in freshwater flow to Florida Bay, (4) hypersalinity, massive algal blooms, and seagrass loss in parts of Florida Bay, and (5) a decrease in wildlife populations, especially those of wading birds.\r\n\r\nThis U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) project focuses on the role of organic-rich sediments (peat) of South Florida wetlands in regulating the concentrations and impact of important chemical species in the environment. The cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in peat is an important factor in the regulation of water quality in the South Florida wetlands ecosystem. These elements are central to many of the contamination issues facing South Florida wetlands, such as nutrient enrichment, mercury toxicity, and loss of peat.\r\n\r\nMany important chemical and biological reactions occur in peat and control the fate of chemical species in wetlands. Wetland scientists often refer to these reactions as biogeochemical processes, because they are chemical reactions usually mediated by microorganisms in a geological environment. An understanding of the biogeochemical processes in peat of South Florida wetlands will provide a basis for evaluating the effects on water quality of (1) constructing buffer wetlands to alleviate nutrient contamination and (2) replumbing the ecosystem to restore natural water flow. The results may also suggest new approaches for solving problems of contamination and water quality in these wetlands.\r\n\r\nA second focus of this project will be on the geochemical history of the South Florida ecosystem. Peat is a repository of the history of past environmental conditions in the wetland. Before effective action can be taken to correct many of the problems facing these wetlands, we must first study the biogeochemistry of the peat at depth in order to understand whether current problems are the result of recent human activity or are part of a long-term natural cycle. Coordination with other (USGS) projects for South Florida is ongoing. These projects are studying the biological history of the ecosystem by using pollen and shells buried in the peat, together with procedures for dating the peat at various depths, to develop an overall ecosystem history model, with emphasis on the last 100 years.\r\n","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/fs17796","usgsCitation":"Orem, W., and Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1996, South Florida wetlands ecosystem; biogeochemical processes in peat: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 177-96, [4] p. : ill. some col., maps; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17796.","productDescription":"[4] p. : ill. some col., maps; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":765,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs177-96/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":122743,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0177/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34112,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0177/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6f63","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Orem, William 0000-0003-4990-0539","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4990-0539","contributorId":105293,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Orem","given":"William","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528772,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

(fig. 1), with a population of about 1,000, needs hydrogeologic and ground-water-quality information to help assure a reliable ground-water supply for future economic development. Currently (1995), three wells supply water to a housing development adjacent to Mission Hill, but the remainder of BMIC is dependent on private low-capacity wells. Currently (1995), motel and gaming facilities are being constructed at the former Fisherman's Wharf site. These facilities will require large-capacity wells for public supply and fire protection. In addition, a proposed fish hatchery would require a water supply that would meet stringent water-quality requirements and be capable of producing about 500 to 600 gallons per minute (gal/min). For example,\nreports of road-salt contamination from\n100 of the 351 municipalities in\nMassachusetts from 1983 through 1990\nrequired an expenditure of about 2.5\nmillion dollar to investigate and\nremediate. Nationally, an estimated 10\nmillion dollar are spent annual ly by State\nand local governments to prevent and\nremediate road-salt contamination.\nOne method used by State highway\nagencies to reduce road- salt\ncontamination of public-water supplies is\nto divert the salt-laden highway runoff\nthrough drainage systems from section\nof highway that pass near public-water\nsupplies to less sensitive areas. The U.S.\nGeological Survey (USGS), in\ncooperation with the Massachusetts\nHighway Department (MHO), has\nconducted an investigation of the relative\neffectiveness of four highway-drainage\nsystems in preventing road-salt\ncontamination of ground water.\nThis fact sheet describes the\nhighway-drainage systems tested, the\ngeneral hydrogeology of the study area,\nand the methods used to evaluate the\ndrainage systems; and presents\npreliminary findings of the effectiveness\nof the systems in preventing road-salt\ncontamination of ground water. Over 300 migratory bird species, including several threatened and endangered species, have been observed along the Platte River. In the spring, nearly 500,000 sandhill cranes, along with millions of ducks and geese, use this reach as a staging and feeding area during their northerly migration. Wet meadows (grasslands which have waterlogged soils much of the year) are a critical part of this migratory-bird habitat. However, the area of wet meadows between Kearney and Grand Island has declined nearly 50 percent due to the activities of man. The condition of the remaining wet meadows is of vital importance. \r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program is designed to describe the status and trends in the quality of the Nation's surface water and groundwater resources and to provide a sound understanding of the natural and human factors that affect the quality of these resources. A study of the groundwater beneath a selected wet meadow was undertaken as part of the Central Nebraska Basins NAWQA study unit. \r\n\r\nObservation wells were installed in the wet meadow at various distances along two transects downgradient from the edge of a corn field. One to five wells completed at depths of about 15 to 100 feet were located at each of the 5 sites. The wells were completed in the Platte River alluvium or the underlying Ogallala Formation. The depth to the water table ranges from 0 to 5 feet below land surface. The general direction of groundwater flow is parallel to flow in the Platte River. Selected wells were sampled in February, March, June, and December 1994 for major cations and anions, nutrients, and organonitrogen herbicides. \r\n\r\nPesticides and fertilizers are used extensively in Nebraska to enhance the production of row crops. Some of these pesticides and fertilizers have migrated into the groundwater. Atrazine was detected in water from all of the wells sampled in February and June and most of the wells sampled at other times, but only in concentrations of 0.1 to 0.6 micrograms per liter. Concentrations of the other pesticides analyzed, including alachlor, cyanazine, and metolachlor, were at or below the detection limit of 0.05 micrograms per liter. The highest concentrations of nitrate were found in water from the shallow wells (about 15 feet deep). The concentrations of nitrate as nitrogen in water from these wells ranged from 5 to 13 milligrams per liter in June. \r\n\r\nConcentrations of major cations and anions decreased and their ratios varied with depth. The major cations were calcium and sodium, and the major anions were sulfate and bicarbonate. Water from the shallowest wells was a mixed calcium sodium sulfate type, whereas the deepest alluvial-aquifer water was a calcium sulfate type. The water from the Ogallala Formation was a calcium bicarbonate type. The variability of the groundwater quality reflects seasonal changes in recharge to and evaporation from the alluvial aquifer and rates of movement and mixing within and between the aquifers.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs09796","usgsCitation":"Emmons, P.J., 1996, Water Quality in a Wet Meadow, Platte River Valley, Central Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 097-96, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs09796.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":118380,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0097/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":13213,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ne.water.usgs.gov/Nawqa/pubs/pje_prs96.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":31983,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0097/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5faddc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Emmons, Patrick J.","contributorId":48958,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Emmons","given":"Patrick","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150767,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Flood stages (water-surface heights) and discharges (flows) in many of the Commonwealth's waterways were measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and approached or exceeded record levels established during previous floods. Setting the stage for the flooding was an unusually cold beginning to the winter of 1995-96, which resulted in the early formation of ice in streams statewide. The anomaly of early ice was followed by a sequence of unusual meteorological events in January 1996, which, in many areas, resulted in the most widespread and severe flooding since that produced by tropical storm Agnes in June 1972. Locally, the flooding was the worst since August 1955 and, in some areas, since March 1936. In approximately 50 localities throughout Pennsylvania, flood effects were magnified when ice jams caused temporary damming of stream channels, resulting in the rapid rise of water levels and the subsequent overflow of water and ice onto flood plains. During the floods, the USGS collected stream-stage information on a near real- 42°-GffEAWa/CESJ DRWNAG. time basis at 189 streamflow-gaging stations across the Commonwealth. Metals and persistent organic contaminants are of principal concern.
\n
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds that occur abundantly in the environment, are toxic and often carcinogenic to organisms, and could represent a long-term source of contamination. PAHs are metabolized and excreted by most higher vertebrates, particularly fishes, often making assessment of tissues concentrations impossible. Major sources of PAHs are the incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials and oil spills.
\n
The objectives of this fact sheet are to summarize the occurrence of water-borne PAHs in three urban streams in the Dallas- Fort Worth metropolitan area and to assess the use of semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) as PAH samplers. One site on each of three streams was selected for monitoring the occurrence of PAHs (fig. 1). The sites were chosen to reflect varied urban land uses and the influences of point- and nonpointsource pollution. The monitoring was done using SPMDs during a 30-day period in late May and June 1994.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs08196","usgsCitation":"Moring, J., 1996, Occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban streams as assessed using semipermeable membrane devices, Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 081-96, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs08196.","productDescription":"2 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":125224,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0081/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34102,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0081/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"85.91 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Dallas, Fort Worth","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.7510986328125,\n              33.25706340236547\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.6522216796875,\n              33.261656767328006\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.580810546875,\n              33.25936011503665\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.53411865234375,\n              33.19962596829635\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.55059814453125,\n              33.09614359735857\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.51763916015625,\n              32.99023555965106\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.492919921875,\n              32.90726224488304\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.492919921875,\n              32.80805323886752\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.51489257812499,\n              32.722598604044066\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.5478515625,\n              32.650938361757355\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.66046142578125,\n              32.6093028087336\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.7291259765625,\n              32.532920675187846\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.80328369140624,\n              32.48659682936049\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.90765380859375,\n              32.50281289041497\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.05596923828125,\n              32.49586350791503\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.196044921875,\n              32.56533316084101\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.44598388671875,\n              32.553758616640046\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.5421142578125,\n              32.602361666817515\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.58331298828125,\n              32.71797709835758\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.55584716796875,\n              32.82421110161336\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.4761962890625,\n              32.909568110575655\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.38555908203125,\n              32.97641208290517\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.349853515625,\n              33.07543248121335\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24273681640625,\n              33.13065128220441\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.16033935546875,\n              33.16284622181141\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.01751708984375,\n              33.213414392242655\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.91314697265625,\n              33.24557893338554\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.7510986328125,\n              33.25706340236547\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af5e4b07f02db69223a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moring, J.
