An effort is made to characterize all surficial materials, regardless of origin. Hence, residuum is given much more emphasis than is customary, and this results in several departures from conventional geologic maps: bedrock geology is deemphasized; the part of the map symbol denoting geologic age is omitted for surficial units because all surficial units shown are believed to be of Quaternary age; and faults are not shown because none in this map area was observed to displace surficial materials.</p>\n<p>Few exposures of most map units exist, except in manmade excavations, such as gravel pits and road cuts. Consequently, thicknesses usually are estimated, and data on stratification, clast size, and relative proportions of matrix and framework clasts are limited to a few localities for each map unit. The Wentworth scale is used to describe grain sizes.</p>\n<p>Mapping was done chiefly on aerial photographs taken in 1953. Hence, landslides and modifications resulting from gravel mining since 1953 may not show on this map. The scales of the aerial photographs (about 1:60,000) and the map (1:100,000) governed the minimum size of the deposits mapped. The minimum thickness of the depostis mapped is about 1.5m in most places. Results of a study, using data from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Metropolitan Waste Control Commission, and the U.S. Geological Survey, indicate that selected water-quality characteristics differ significantly among subbasins. Results of the study also indicate that the quality of water leaving the basin at Hastings is affected primarily by inflow from the Minnesota River and by effluent from the Metropolitan sewage-treatment plant.</p>\n<p>Subbasins in the western part of the study area are underlain by prairie soils and cultivation of row crops is a common land use. Streams draining these subbasins have a median dissolved-solids concentration of 389 mg/L (milligrams per Liter) and a median concentration of nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen of 0.59 mg/L. Subbasins in the northern and eastern parts of the study area are underlain by more acidic podzol soils. Land use in these subbasins is less devoted to cultivated crops; forested areas, pastures, and wetlands are common. Streams draining these subbasins have a median dissolved- solids concentration of 184 mg/L and a median concentration of nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen of 0.17 mg/L.</p>\n<p>The quality of water changes dramatically in the most downstream subbasin, which includes the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. On the basis of hourly data from automatic monitors, specific conductance increases from 345 /<span>&mu;</span>S/cm (microsiemens per centimeter) at 25&deg; Celsius above the confluence with the Minnesota River to 467 /<span>&mu;</span>S/cm below it. Specific conductance increases to a median of 513 /<span>&mu;</span>S/cm where effluent from the Metropolitan sewage-treatment plant enters the Mississippi River.</p>\n<p>Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the Mississippi River begin to decline below the confluence with the Minnesota River. Concentrations of dissolved oxygen reach a minimum median value in summer of 6.3 mg/L at a point about 9 miles downstream from the Metropolitan sewage-treatment plant. In winter, minimum median concentration is downstream at Lock and Dam 2, which is approximately 20 miles below the plant.</p>\n<p>Results of this study show that the quality of water in the Mississippi River as it leaves the accounting unit at Hastings is not representative of water quality in most of the accounting unit. Three water-quality regions have been identified, and sampling sites are needed in each region to assess the quality of streams throughout the study area The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Canals, Rivers, and Reservoirs Salinity Accounting Procedures model can be used to predict the effect various operating plans could have on water quality in the Sheyenne River and the Red River of the North. The model uses, as Input, monthly means of streamflow and selected water-quality constituents for a 54-year period at 28 nodes on the Sheyenne River and the Red River of the North. This report provides methods for estimating monthly mean concentrations of selected water-quality constituents that can be used for input to and calibration of the salinity model.</p><p>Mater-quality data for 32 gaging stations can be used to define selected water-quality characteristics at the 28 model nodes. Materquality data were retrieved from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Mater Data Storage and Retrieval System data base and statistical summaries were prepared. The frequency of water-quality data collection at the gaging stations is inadequate to define monthly mean concentrations of the individual water-quality constituents for all months for the 54-year period; therefore, methods for estimating monthly mean concentrations were developed. Relations between selected water-quality constituents [dissolved solids, hardness (as <span>CaCO</span><sub>3</sub>), sodium, sulfate, and chloride] and streamflow were developed as the primary method to estimate monthly mean concentrations. Relations between specific conductance and streamflow and relations between selected water-quality constituents [dissolved solids, hardness (as CaCO<sub>3</sub>), sodium, sulfate, and chloride] and specific conductance were developed so that a cascaded-regression relation could be developed as a second method of estimating monthly mean concentrations and, thus, utilize a large specific-conductance data base. </p><p>Information about the quantity and the quality of ground water discharging to the Sheyenne River is needed for model input for reaches of the river where ground water accounts for a substantial part of streamflow during periods of low flow. Ground-water discharge was identified for two reaches of the Sheyenne River. Ground-water discharge to the Sheyenne River in the vicinity of Warwick, N.Dak., was about 14.8 cubic feet per second and the estimated dissolved-solids concentration was about 441 milligrams per liter during October 15 and 16, 1986. Ground-water discharge to the Sheyenne River in a reach between Lisbon and Kindred, N.Dak., ranged from an average of 25.3 cubic feet per second during September 13 to November 19, 1963, to about 45.0 cubic feet per second during October 21 and 22, 1986. Long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to describe the status and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's surface- and ground-water resources and to provide a sound, scientific understanding of the primary natural and human factors affecting the quality of these resources. In meeting these goals, the program will produce a wealth of water quality information that will be useful to policy makers and managers at the national, State, and local levels. Study-unit investigations constitute a major component of the NAWQA program, forming the principal building blocks on which national-level assessment activities are based. The 60 study-unit investigations that make up the program are hydrologic systems that include parts of most major river basins and aquifer systems. These study units cover areas of 1,200 to more than 65,000 square miles and incorporate about 60 to 70 percent of the Nation's water use and population served by public water supply. In 1991, the Albemarle-Pamlico drainage was among the first 20 NAWQA study units selected for study under the full-scale implementation plan. The Albemarle-Pamlico drainage study will examine the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of water quality issues in a coordinated investigation of surface water and ground water in the Albemarle-Pamlico drainage basin. The quantity and quality of discharge from the Albemarle-Pamlico drainage basin contribute to some water quality problems in the biologically sensitive waters of Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. A retrospective analysis of existing water quality data will precede a 3-year period of intensive data-collection and analysis activities. Suspended- and bottom-sediment data were also collected at the gaging stations. Two gaging stations were located upstream and one was located downstream from the lake.</p>\n<p>Daily mean discharges were determined except for the November 1987 to March 1988 winter period. During the 1989 water year, the only complete year of data, the mean annual discharge for the two upstream stations was 111 ft /s (cubic feet per second) for Mississippi River at Bemidji and 71 ft /s for Schoolcraft River near Bemidji. The meeting was attended by more than 200 technical and managerial people representing all Divisions of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Scientists in every Division of the U.S. Geological Survey rely heavily upon state-of-the-art computer technology (both hardware and sofnuare). Today the goals of each Division are pursued in an environment where high speed computers, distributed communications, distributed data bases, high technology input/output devices, and very sophisticated simulation tools are used regularly. Therefore, information transfer and the sharing of advances in technology are very important issues that must be addressed regularly.</p><p>This report contains complete papers and abstracts of papers that were presented at the 1988 NCTM. The report is divided into topical sections that reflect common areas of interest and application. In each section, papers are presented first followed by abstracts. Of special interest are the groundwater levels measurements obtained on a routine basis at wells located in the different aquifer regions or aquifer zones. Data from 181 observation wells were entered in the computer data base. The data base includes the following: name, latitude and longitude coordinates, owner, diameter, depth, station identification, local number, aquifer area or region, period of record, construction date, earliest groundwater level reported, and groundwater level fluctuations for various time periods between 1958 and 1985. Data showing conditions under which groundwater level measurements may have been affected by (1) pumping of the well, (2) by a nearby pumping well (3) a specific method by which the groundwater level was determined, (4) whether the well was recently pumped, and (5) when recorded, the lowest water level are also indicated. The summarized information is available in printed format on a yearly basis as part of the Water Resources Data Publication series. The dam consists of a gravity concrete control structure between two earthen embankments and has an impoundment storage capacity of 1,700,000 acre-feet. Since the impoundment of Lake Red Rock commenced during 1969, water seepage beneath the dam has been significant enough to cause continuing investigation by the Corps of Engineers of its source and implications.</p>\n<p>The St. Louis Limestone, which consists of interbedded sandstones and carbonates with solution collapse features resulting from partial removal of a basal evaporite zone, forms the bedrock foundation of the dam in the river valley. The soluble gypsum and anhydrite in the evaporite zone have the potential to be removed in greater quantity with increasing seepage velocities and volumes. Solution channels may develop as material is removed from the bedrock foundation, which could result in the collapse of overlying strata, thereby threatening the integrity of the earthen dam.</p>\n<p>The potentiometric surface in the overburden on the southwest side of the dam has an extremely steep hydraulic gradient from the reservoir through the dam to the downstream observation wells, which implies expected small permeability and minimal seepage through the dam and embankment materials. A lesser hydraulic gradient exists on the northeast side of the dam, which could indicate excessive seepage through embankment material from larger than expected hydraulic conductivity or underseepage through bedrock. Statistical analysis of water-level changes in the reservoir and in observation wells completed in the evaporite stratigraphic horizon on the northeast side of the dam indicates a hydraulic connection between the reservoir and the wells.</p>\n<p>Direct evidence of the existence of a connection between the reservoir and the ground-water system is provided by chloride concentration data. Maximum chloride concentrations occurred in the reservoir water in the early spring of 1989. Chloride concentrations reached a maximum in ground water from bedrock and overburden observation wells on the northeast side of the dam 1 to 4 months after their maximum in the reservoir. Underseepage of reservoir water occurs through the basal evaporite zone of the St. Louis Limestone and through the glacial sands in the northeast bluff between the bedrock surface and the base of the dam fill.</p>\n<p>The increased hydraulic head imposed on the system by the impounded waters of Lake Red Rock causes recharge and flow to the deeper bedrock aquifers in the immediate vicinity of the dam. This effect is manifested in the observation wells along and downstream from the dam axis, implying flow through the grout curtain in the bedrock foundation of the dam. The 50 sampled features represent the variety of collapse features that crop out on plateau surfaces in northwestern Arizonaoodeeplyorooted solution-collapse breccia pipes, near-surface gypsum collapses, and sinkholes. Of the 50 features that were sampled in this study, 3 are confirmed breccia pipes that contain significant uranium and base-metal minerals, I is believed to be a sinkhole with no economic potential, and 4 are stratabound copper deposits whose possible relationship to breccia pipes is yet to be determined. The remaining collapse features are suspected to overlie breccia pipes, although some of these may represent near surface gypsum collapse features. However, no exploratory drilling results or breccia exposures exist to indicate their underlying structure.\r\n\r\nThe low cost and ease of soil sampling suggested that this technique be evaluated for breccia pipe exploration. This report provides the locations and geochemical results for the soil sampling surveys and brief descriptions of the 50 collapse features. The analytical results of almost 2,000 soil samples are provided in tabular hardcopy and dBase III Plus diskcopy format. The analytical data is provided in digital format to allow the reader to choose their own methods for evaluating the effectiveness of soil sampling over known and suspected breccia pipes.\r\n\r\nA pilot survey conducted over 17 collapse features in 1984 suggested that soil sampling might be useful in distinguishing mineralized breccia pipes from other circular features. Followup detailed surveys in 1985 and 1986 used a radial sampling pattern at each of 50 sites; at least one third of the samples were collected from areas outside of the collapse feature to provide background data. Samples were consistently collected from 3-4 inches depth after the pilot survey showed that metal concentrations were similar in samples from 3-4 inches and 7-8 inches depth.\r\n\r\nThe geochemical analyses of the <80 mesh fractions of the soil samples were performed by the U.S. Geological Survey Analytical Laboratories and Geochemical Services, Inc. The analytical methods applied to these samples by the U.S. Geological Survey laboratories included inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, neutron activation, atomic absorption, delayed neutron activation, and classical wet chemistry for carbon, fluorine, and sulfur.
