S. Geological Survey vessel EIDER. Bottom character and temperature observations were made at these stations. The composition and size distribution characteristics of the bottom samples have been determined. Components of terrigenous origin are angular to subangular sand and silt and angular to well rounded granules, pebbles, and cobbles, all composed of little-altered fragments of the fine grained insular rocks. Components of marine origin are the skeletons of Foraminifera, diatoms, and sponges and the broken shells of a few species of mollusks and of one echinoid species. A chart, based also on the study of approximately 600 USC&GS bottom notations, was prepared to show the distribution of these components of the sediments. Bed rock is exposed on most of the shelf; where sediment occurs terrigenous components are generally most important near shore, whereas marine components are more important seaward of the islands. Studies of the Foraminifera fauna and the diatom flora (identified by K. E. Lohman) and the few mollusks of quantitative importance show these organisms to be forms characteristic of cold or deep water or occurring in a wide range of temperature conditions. The Foraminifera exhibit depth zonation which seems to be controlled in part by temperature and in part by depth or some other variable which is a function of depth. Sphericity and roundness studies made on pebbles from the shelf, the beaches, and the fluvio-glacial deposits together with shelf topographic features and Foraminifera from sediment deposited before ice wastage was complete suggest the shelf was not subjected to prolonged surf action during the post-glacial rise of sea level. \r\n\r\nTo aid in interpreting the sediments and their distribution several subaerial and marine environmental factors were investigated. Those factors found to be of most importance in determining sediment character and distribution are recent geologic history, nature of terrigenous source material, temperature, topography, rainfall, size of source area, history of the water mass, waves, and currents. The purpose of the tests, which will be reported later, is to measure as precisely as possible the tangential stresses exerted on the periphery of a gallery cut in the Lorraine iron ore.

The values of the tangential stresses along the periphery being known, they will be compared with the values that would be given by the computations based on various hypotheseses, that of elasticity, perfect plasticity, masses with internal friction, irreversibility of stresses, stratified masses, etc.

The Little Susitna district, as defined in this report, occupies an area roughly 25 miles long and 3 miles wide on the north side of the lower (western) extremity of the Matanuska Valley in south-central Alaska (fig. 1). The district is bounded on the north by the Talkeetna Mountains, on the south and east by the Little Susitna River, and on the west by the broad lowland of the Susitna River. (See pl. 1.)

This report is based on field work done in the summer of 1952, in which the writer was assisted by Alfred Oestreich, Lewis Ladwig, and Richard Pack. Prior to the present investigation very little was known geologically of the district, except that it was largely covered with alluvial and glacial deposits and that coal-bearing rocks were exposed at three widely separated localities. The purpose of the investigation was to determine, if possible from scattered outcrops and shallow test pits, whether any parts of the district offered sufficient promise of containing minable coal deposits to warrant a more detailed investigation using sub-surface methods.

As a result of this preliminary investigation, plans are being made to explore more thoroughly, by trenching and drilling, some of the more promising parts of the district.

The Jarvis Creek coal field lies on the north side of the Alaska Range between latitudes 63°35' and 63°45 N., and longitudes 145°40' and 145°50 W. It is 2 to 6 miles east of the Richardson Highway. The coal field is about 16 square miles in area, the major part of which is a rolling plateau that slopes gently northward and is bounded on the east, south and west, by bluffs facing Jarvis Creek, Ruby Creek and Delta River.

The oldest rock is pre-Cambrian Birch Creek schist, which is largely quartz-sericite schist with many quartz veins, and is locally intruded by rhyolite dikes. it is overlain by the Tertiary coal-bearing formation. Quaternary deposits include gravel, till, solifluction debris, and wind-borne deposits.
