\nThe measuring principle consists of cutting a drain in a gallery wall, observing the corresponding stress lessening, then restoring the initial state of stress by means of a Freyssinet flat jack. The application of this method in the Eastern iron-ore mines have given interesting results. In particular, they confirm the validity of the elastic hypothesis in these mines and enable the measurement of the stresses within them ass to be made more accurately than by the usual methods. Finally, by means of improvements, which do not unduly complicate the test performance, complete information on the elastic characteristics of the mineral may be obtained.

A Study was made to map the Phosphoria formation, study its stratigraphy, and to ascertain the reserves and mining problems. In the Centennial Range the Phosphoria formation is divisible into five members, designated A to E, from the bottom to the top of the formation. The B and D members contain phosphate rock. The B member contains six feet or more of high grade phosphate rock, mostly in one layer, and is the chief potential ore bed. The phosphate rock is of detrital origin and contains some quartz. Lithologic variations in the B member as well as areas where the B member is missing due to pre-member erosion, need more study.\r\n\r\nThe formation dips gently southward and is overlain by varying amounts of overburden, Underground mining would seem to be the best method of potential exploitation of the deposit, but core drilling and further trenching are needed. \r\n\r\nHigh grade phosphate rock reserves in. The relief is about 3,500 feet, and the highest mountain reaches an altitude of 4,453 feet. Remnants of larger glaciers and perennial snow fields cover many of the higher summits, and glacial erratics at elevations above 3,100 feet attest to a former thick ice cover.\r\n\r\nThe bedded rocks are crystalline schists that locally reach katozonal metamorphic rank as indicated by biotite-garnet-kyanite-sillimanite mineral assemblages. The schists are believed to be dominantly a product of regional metamorphism predating the intrusion of rocks related to the Coast Range batholith. It appears, however, that stresses continued to be active during igneous and granitizing activity accompanying the Coast Range orogeny.\r\n\r\nThe major intrusive bodies are a composite quartz-dioritic batholith and quartz-diorite sills that locally reach a thickness of more than two thousand feet. The sills usually are notably gneissic, and appear to have formed by intrusion rather than replacement. The batholith is a composite body formed by migmatization, replacement, and local fusion. A stressed environment during formation is suggested by a primary gneissic structure. A high quartz content and a paucity of potash feldspars is diagnostic of the intrusive bodies. In addition to the bodies of quartz-diorite, small sills and dikes of gabbro, quartz-pegmatite, and unmetamorphosed diabase intrude the schists.\r\n\r\nOverturned folds in the schists are nearly isoclinal, and some of the folds are large enough to cause repetition of beds in the Clark Peak schists.\r\n\r\nTwo persistent northwest-trending strike faults of small displacement cut the schists. Two east-trending faults of larger displacement are marked by thick gouge zones locally containing graphite. The rocks near the faults are hydrothermally altered and pyritized, and at least two of the diabase dikes are crushed and hydrothermally altered near one of the northwest-trending faults. This paper reviews an experimental geochemical prospecting survey in the Blackbird cobalt-copper mining district. The district is in east-central Idaho, about 20 miles west-southwest of Salmon. The area is one of deeply weathered nearly flat-topped upland surfaces cut by steep-walled valleys which are tributary to the canyon of Panther Creek. Most of the area has a relatively heavy vegetative cover, and outcrops are scarce except on the sides of the steeper valleys* Because of the importance of the surficial deposits and soils and the physiographic history of the region on the interpretation of the geochemical data, a separate chapter on this subject by Gerald H. Richmond follows the following brief description of the geology of the district.
