A short statement on previous knowledge and investigation of radioactive materials in the Territory is also given. The review of data and appraisal for the Seward Peninsula-Jobuk, Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim, Upper Yukon, Alaska Railroad-Iliamna, and southeastern Alaska regions are essentially complete. Those of the Copper River, Gulf of Alaska, Aleutian and northern Alaska regions are not yet complete. A more detailed presentation of these latter regions will be made in the final report.\r\n\r\nThe appraisals are based on known occurrences of radioactive materials and geologic criteria that suggest the presence of uranium. Review of published and unpublished data to date shows that the Seward Peninsula-Kobuk region and southeastern Alaska followed by the Alaska Railroad, Gulf of Alaska and Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim regions are perhaps the more promising regions of the Territory for the occurrence of high-grade uranium ores.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr52165","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., White, M., and Moxham, R.M., 1952, Interim report on an appraisal of the uranium possibilities of Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-165, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr52165.","productDescription":"124 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":178306,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86475,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86476,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86477,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86478,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86479,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86480,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86481,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86482,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86483,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86484,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86485,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86486,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86487,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86488,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86489,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e09bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth","contributorId":67495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243134,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, Max G.","contributorId":22426,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Max G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243132,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243133,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This block is separated from Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks on the west by the Clark Mountain normal fault, and the northern boundary of the district is a prominent transverse fault. The pre-Cambrian metamorphic complex comprises a great variety of lithologic types including garnetiferous mica gneisses and schists; biotite-garnet-sillimenite gneiss; hornblende gneiss, schist, and amphibolite; biotite gneiss and schist; granitic gneisses and migmatites; pegmatites; and minor amounts of foliated mafic rocks.\r\n\r\nThe rare earth-bearing carbonate rocks are related to potash-rich igneous rocks, of uncertain age, that cut the metamorphic complex. The larger potash-rich intrusive masses, 300 or more feet wide, comprise one granite, two syenite, and four composite shonkinite-syenite bodies. One of the shonkinite-syenite stocks is more than a mile long. Several hundred relatively thin dikes of these potash-rich rocks range in composition, and generally decreasing age, from biotite shonkinite through syenite to granite. A few thin fine-grained shonkinite dikes cut the granite. These potash-rich rocks are cut by east-trending andesitic dikes and by faults.\r\n\r\nVeins of carbonate rock are most abundant in and near the southwest side of the largest shonkinite-syenite body. Although most veins are less than 6 feet thick, one mass of carbonate rock near the Sulphide Queen min4e is 600 feet in maximum width and 2,400 feet long. About 200 veins have been mapped in the district; their aggregate surface area is probably less than one-tenth that of the large carbonate mass.\r\n\r\nThe carbonate materials, which make up about 60 percent of the veins and the large carbonite body, are chiefly calcite, dolomite, ankerite, and siderite. The other constituents are barite, bastnaesite and perisite, quartz, and variable small quantities of crocidolite, biotite, phlogopite, chlorite, muscovite, apatite, iron oxides, fluorite, monazite, galena, allanite, sphene, pyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, malachite, azurite, corussite, wulfenite, aragonite, and thorite. The rare earth oxide content in most of the carbonate rock is less than 13 percent, but in some local concentrations of bastnaesite the content is as high as 40 percent.\r\n\r\nThe origin of the carbonate rocks and related potash-rich igneous rocks is considered in the light of similar associations of carbonate and alkalinic rocks in Sweden, Norway, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. The carbonate rock may have originated (1) as a pre-Cambrian limestone or evaporate sequence in the gneisses; (2) by reaction between magma and the Paleozoic dolomite and limestone overlying the pre-Cambrian complex; (3) by alteration of pre-Cambrian gneisses by emanations from an unknown deep-seated source; or (4) by differentiation of an alkaline magma from shonkinite to syenite to granite, leading to a final carbonate-rich fraction, containing the rare elements, which was emplaced either as a concentrated or a dilute solution. The fourth hypothesis is considered the most plausible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr52110","usgsCitation":"Olson, J.C., 1952, Geologic setting of the Mountain Pass rare earth deposits, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-110, 1 v. The project is drained by the Belle Fourche River and is characterized generally by broad shallow valleys that lie between hills with gentle slopes. The climate is semiarid. \r\n\r\nMost of the area is mantled by residual clay, terrace deposits, and alluvium. The terrace deposits contain much water and are the most permeable deposits in the project area. The alluvial deposits of the Belle Fourche River and of the creeks south of the river contain much sand and gravel and are relatively permeable. The alluvium of the creeks north of the river is predominantly clay and is only slightly permeable; it greatly resembles the residual clay of the weathered bedrock formations, which are mostly shale in this area. \r\n\r\nAlthough relatively abundant ground water is found in the unconsolidated materials above the bedrock formations, the ground water from the clayey deposits generally contains too great a concentration of objectionable salts to be fit for human or livestock consumption. The ground water in the more coarse materials is of better quality and in some small areas is satisfactory for domestic use. Most of the water for domestic use is hauled from deep artesian wells within the area.\r\n\r\nThe chief source of ground water is seepage from irrigation canals in the terrace and alluvial deposits. When this water moves to areas of lower permeability a correspondingly greater rise of the water table compensates for the lower permeability and results in the waterlogging of many areas. Open drainage ditches have been constructed in all large areas that are affected by high ground-water levels. Except in those areas that are underlain predominantly by clayey materials, these ditches usually have proven to be satisfactory for the control of ground-water levels. However, lining the canals seems to be a more satisfactory method of preventing the seepage that causes high ground-water levels. \r\n\r\nA detailed investigation should be made of ground-water conditions in the Belle Fourche project area. Additional observation wells should be installed so that the effectiveness of the ground-water control measures can be determined.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr52132","usgsCitation":"Rosier, A.J., 1952, Reconnaissance of the geology and ground-water hydrology of the Belle Fourche irrigation project, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-132, 34 p., 2 plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr52132.","productDescription":"34 p., 2 plates","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179146,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0132/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86473,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0132/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86474,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0132/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6247dc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosier, Arthur J.","contributorId":69537,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosier","given":"Arthur","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243111,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of this report is to present an annotated bibliography of all existing reports pertaining to ground-water supplies in the area reported upon; to collect and analyze all data on public, industrial, and irrigation pumping from wells that are not covered by previous reports; to indicate areas where additional large-scale pumping might be undertaken; to estimate the possibility of depletion of stream flow by ground-water pumping from the developed areas and from areas where large-scale pumping maybe undertaken in the future; to point out areas where aquifers might be artificially recharged; and to recommend areas where detailed ground-water studies should be made, indicating the studies needed.</p><p>The writer spent approximately 2 weeks in the field during June 1952 evaluating the results of previous studies to determine their adequacy with respect to the purpose of this report. Katmai and related volcanic action in 1912. The principal deposits in the coastal areas of the Monument occur in the valley of the Katmai River and in the Amalik Bay-Kukak Bay area.\r\n\r\nSeveral areas of pumice deposition have been found on the south and west sides of Augustine Island, located 200 miles southwest of Anchorage. Mining was carried on by the Alaska Katmalite Corporation during the period 1946-1949, but no production has taken place since that time.\r\n\r\nPumice deposits found in the Aniakchak-Veniaminof area have probably been derived from three principal sources: Aniakchak Crater, Mt. Veniaminof and Purple Crater. The limited data available indicate the deposits of chief interest occur in the valley of the Aniakchak River and in areas adjacent to Chignik Bay.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr52103","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R., 1952, Pumice deposits in the Alaska Peninsula-Cook Inlet region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-103, Report: 33 p.; 2 Plates: 25.50 x 28.30 inches and 23.61 x 19.62 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr52103.","productDescription":"Report: 33 p.; 2 Plates: 25.50 x 28.30 inches and 23.61 x 19.62 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":86469,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0103/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86468,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0103/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86467,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0103/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":177692,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0103/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Cook Inlet region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -155.19287109375,\n              58.39019698411526\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.4912109375,\n              58.39019698411526\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.4912109375,\n              61.80428390136847\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.19287109375,\n              61.80428390136847\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.19287109375,\n              58.39019698411526\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a90e4b07f02db655888","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, R.M.","contributorId":42234,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243071,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
