The most significant known deposits are found in the Wasilla area, about 30 miles north of the city of Anchorage.
In this area marl has been deposited in three fresh water lakes--Wasilla Lake, Finger Lake and Lucile Lake. The accumulation of the high-lime material (which is still in progress) has taken place in sheltered embayments and shallow marginal areas of the lakes with algae probably acting as precipitating agents. In some instances the embayments have been completely filled with marl and subsequently overlain by a layer of muskeg, effectively sealing off the deposits from the lake proper.
The marl in and adjacent to Wasilla and Finger Lakes attains a maximum thickness of about 21 feet, while the deposits in Lucile Take are generally thinner and discontinuous, but relatively widely distributed.
Some of the material probably would be of suitable composition for the manufacture of portland cement, but the amount of such material discovered to date is insufficient for this purpose.

As part of this program, heavy-mineral samples were prepared from cores of the test wells and core holes and studied to determine stratigraphic correlations. Using the following criteria: (1) presence of diagnostic minerals or mineral suites; (2) relative abundance of specific minerals; (3) degree of rounding of mineral grains; (4) distinction as to grain form; eight heavy-mineral zones have been recognized in Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary sedimentary rocks. Correlations based on these zones are shown. The only exposures of bedrock in or near this area are in the open-pit and underground mines where two or more layers of iron-formation and associated elastic sediments have been deformed into a complex fold system and have been intruded by large dikes. The accompanying maps and sections show the distribution of the several rock types exposed, brief descriptions of these materials, and data on the geologic structure. For the most part this structural and lithologic information has been generalized from much more detailed maps prepared in the field on scales of 30, 40, or 50 feet equal to one inch.

In addition, two new prospects were studied.\r\n\r\nThe Nelson fault block is cut by many dominantly strike-slip faults of small displacement, and by bedding faults. Slickensided chalcocite shows post-mineral movement, and chalcocite veinlet in a filled solution cavity indicates that some of the chalcocite is secondary, perhaps very recent. Structural relations indicate two overthrust faults cut the block.\r\n\r\nThe Radovan \u001CGreenstone\u001D prospect shows massive chalcocite, up to 3 feet wide, in a silicified, epidotized fault zone in the Nikolai greenstone. Ore indicated by surface exposures may amount to 450 tons of chalcocite.\r\n\r\nThe Radovan \u001CLow-Contact\u001D prospect is on a continuation of the same fault approximately 3 miles southwest of the Greenstone prospect, and 150 feet above the contact of the Nikolai greenstone and the overlying Chitistone limestone. Limonite staining is widespread in bedding planes and small faults near the fault zone; mineralization in the fault zone consists of pyrite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, realgar, orpiment and stibnite. discharge measurements made in the Santa Ynez Mountains between Refugio Canyon on the west to San Marcos Pass and the Painted Cave area on the east. This portion of Santa Barbara County has been designated as the \"Tecolote Tunnel Area\" because a tunnel by that name, now being built by the Bureau of Reclamation, passes through it. The purpose of this tunnel is to divert flood runoff from the Santa Ynez River, stored in Cachuma Reservoir, to the city of Santa Barbara and adjacent areas.
During the construction of this tunnel, the seepage from the south portal has averaged 6.4 second-feet for the year ending April 30, 1952, the average being 8.7 second-feet for the last 6 months of that period. Both of these values exceed the average total discharge prior to April 30, 1951, for more than 120 springs measured in the Tecolote Tunnel Area.
As, it was not known what effect the seepage from this tunnel might have on the flow of springs and streams in the immediate vicinity, the Santa Barbara County Water Agency requested the U. S. Geological Survey to institute an observational program. This program was started in 1948—about 2 years before work was started on the tunnel. The area covered by the observational program was made sufficiently large to include all the springs that could possibly be affected, as well as certain border springs believed to be outside the zone of influence.
The purpose of this, the fourth progress report, is to make available factual data obtained during the year ending April 30, 1952. This program is operated under a cooperative agreement between the U. S. Geological Survey and the Santa Barbara County Water Agency whereby each pays half the cost of the investigation.
