Hermit Warblers (Setophaga occidentalis) are an endemic-breeding species in the Pacific Northwest that winters in Mexico and the Central Americas. This species faces threats from mature forest loss and climate change throughout its range, but we know little about its migration ecology. To understand the annual movements and migratory connectivity of Hermit Warblers, we tracked 22 adult male Hermit Warblers from six breeding sites across the species’ breeding range using geolocators to examine migratory connectivity, spatiotemporal patterns, and migration routes. We found a high degree of mixing on the wintering grounds among birds from different breeding locations, indicating low migratory connectivity. However, birds breeding in Yosemite, the southernmost breeding location in our study, wintered farther east and south than birds from more northern breeding locations, providing weak evidence for potential chain migration. All birds showed much shorter and faster movements during spring migration than during fall migration. Birds arrived at breeding grounds from late April to mid-May and left breeding ranges from late June to mid-July. In fall, birds moved slowly from the breeding locations to montane regions in southern Oregon and California, which may indicate post-breeding molt before swiftly migrating to wintering grounds. Low migratory connectivity in this species implies that habitat and climate change across the broad wintering range may affect breeding populations throughout the species’ breeding range. A particularly compressed breeding schedule and departure of birds from the breeding grounds in early July may indicate that breeding is limited by a short window of favorable climatic conditions for breeding, which could signal heightened vulnerability under future climatic scenarios.
","language":"English","publisher":"Resilience We conducted 24 road-based counts, covering 260 km of roadway, and deployed up to 16 camera traps, processing over 82,000 images representing over 5,000 independent observations.

In both years, we identified bucks based on their body and antler characteristics, tracking their movements between baited camera trap locations. We tested seven estimators commonly reported in the literature, comparing the relative merits for managers of small, protected natural areas like FRST.

Deer densities estimated from conventional road-based distance sampling were approximately 10 deer/km2 lower than densities estimated from camera-trapping surveys. We attribute the bias in roadbased distance sampling to the difficulty of recording the precise effort expended to obtain the counts. Modifying the distance sampling method addressed many of the issues associated with the conventional approach. Despite little substantive differences in land cover types between the two methods, a clear spatial segregation of male and female deer at camera trap locations could bias roadbased counts if the sexes are not encountered in proportion to their abundances. There was a distinct gradient in deer distribution across the study area, with higher proportions of deer recorded in camera traps at FRST than BCSP, which harvests 20–60 deer annually during a regulated, hunting season.

The most reliable (i.e., low bias, acceptable precision) methods, Spatial Capture Recapture (SCR) and Density Surface Modeling (DSM), produced deer densities of approximately 50 deer/km2 in each year — a number which is consistent with previous estimates for New Castle County, Delaware, and our experience in similar, unhunted natural areas. Across both FRST and BCSP, these densities translated into area-wide (~1000 ha) population sizes between 650–1000 deer, with about one-half to two-thirds comprising the FRST population.

Density surface modeling of mapped locations of deer detected during surveys, combined with camera-trapping and a time-to-event data analysis might be the only practical means of reliably assessing white-tailed deer abundance in small (<2000 ha), protected natural areas like FRST. Most other approaches are either too time-consuming, require identification and tracking of individual deer, the use of bait, or require intervention by a subject-area expert.
","language":"English","publisher":"National Park Service","doi":"10.36967/2305428","usgsCitation":"Underwood, H.B., Hand, M.R., and Leopold, D.J., 2024, Abundance and distribution of white-tailed deer on First State National Historical Park and surrounding lands: Science Report NPS/SR—2024/176, x, 76 p., https://doi.org/10.36967/2305428.","productDescription":"x, 76 p.","ipdsId":"IP-154880","costCenters":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":433697,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Delaware, Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Brandywine Creek State Park, Brandywine Valley unit of First State National Historical Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -75.57893855864407,\n 39.84864721075371\n ],\n [\n -75.57893855864407,\n 39.79988968093724\n ],\n [\n -75.54431018453508,\n 39.79988968093724\n ],\n [\n -75.54431018453508,\n 39.84864721075371\n ],\n [\n -75.57893855864407,\n 39.84864721075371\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Underwood, H. However, recruitment is inherently variable and can be regulated by many interacting processes, the relative importance of which can vary spatially, temporally, and ontogenetically. Given this complexity, comparisons across lakes and species that identify overarching hypotheses could efficiently guide future research. Using facilitated deliberations among fishery professionals (n = 57) with expertise in Great Lakes Coregonus spp., we synthesized current knowledge regarding (1) which biophysical processes are most important for driving contemporary recruitment between species, among lakes, and across life stages and (2) mechanisms by which those drivers regulate recruitment at key life stages. Participants affirmed the hypothesis that many drivers interact in complex ways to regulate Lake Whitefish and Cisco recruitment. Large-scale climatic processes affecting early life-stage growth and survival were consistently considered important. Other drivers were only deemed influential in certain lakes, highlighting perceived context-dependent recruitment dynamics. Notably, recruitment in Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron was considered limited during larval and early juvenile life stages by low productivity, whereas spawning-habitat degradation and reduced metapopulation diversity were hypothesized to limit recruitment during embryonic and larval stages in Lakes Erie and Ontario. Several drivers were hypothesized to similarly impact Lake Whitefish and Cisco during early life stages, while drivers acting on post-larval life stages were typically distinct between species. The hypotheses synthesized herein can guide future research on Lake Whitefish and Cisco recruitment dynamics in the Great Lakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Previous fish habitat assessments, such as the National Fish Habitat Assessment, conducted separate and disconnected assessments for inland waters and estuaries. In this project, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) and U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS ) researchers created a seamless spatial framework to allow assessments that integrate influences on fish habitat from headwaters to the estuary. This effort began when the Chesapeake Bay Program Fish Habitat Action Team expressed interest in a Baywide fish habitat assessment spanning tidal salt, tidal fresh, warm non-tidal, and cold non-tidal waters. However, the complexity of the myriad of implementation details to consider when developing such an assessment necessitated the need for a tributary-specific pilot assessment. To conduct this pilot assessment, a NOAA/USGS joint partnership was formed with cooperation and support from the Chesapeake Bay Agreement and Chesapeake Bay Fish Habitat Action Team (FHAT).

","language":"English","publisher":"NOAA","usgsCitation":"Nisonson, H., Kiser, A.H., Gressler, B.P., Leight, A., and Young, J.A., 2024, Joint pilot fish habitat framework: NOAA Story Map, HTML Document.","productDescription":"HTML Document","ipdsId":"IP-169467","costCenters":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":432940,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":432939,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0902bfe6a2ed408488a13bf4227c9ab8","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","otherGeospatial":"Patuxent River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.39361321933961,\n              38.27947195524095\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.42031861435605,\n              38.39258760740202\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.56719828694345,\n              38.639151180749025\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.62595015597843,\n              38.94097411844302\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.73811281504507,\n              39.133883869081444\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.05857755523637,\n              39.35518173602037\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.34165564025463,\n              39.53048056579706\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.59802743240763,\n              39.54489731844012\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.51524070785847,\n              39.38202023535723\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.30159754773115,\n              39.20634728019897\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.05323737408307,\n              39.102804445263814\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.83959421395518,\n              38.932661799568905\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.79152533431636,\n              38.59741877946476\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.6206108062147,\n              38.32976596030326\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.47640167312836,\n              38.25430974627827\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.39361321933961,\n              38.27947195524095\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nisonson, Hannah","contributorId":343420,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nisonson","given":"Hannah","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36803,"text":"NOAA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":911013,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kiser, Alexander H. 0000-0002-2871-0640","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2871-0640","contributorId":342012,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kiser","given":"Alexander","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":911014,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gressler, Benjamin P. 0000-0001-6639-8558","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6639-8558","contributorId":270167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gressler","given":"Benjamin","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":911015,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Leight, A.K.","contributorId":343421,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Leight","given":"A.K.","affiliations":[{"id":36803,"text":"NOAA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":911016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Young, John A. 0000-0002-4500-3673 jyoung@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4500-3673","contributorId":3777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"John","email":"jyoung@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":911017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

This poses a problem of novel situations for emergency management. Progress has been made in terms of formally incorporating climate projections, data, and research on expected changes in climate-driven hazards into long-term hazard mitigation and climate adaptation strategies at both state and national levels. However, there are fewer examples of how climate change considerations have, or could be, incorporated into shorter-term emergency preparedness and response strategies. This is an important gap to fill, as climate resilience depends not only on mitigation and prevention measures, but also on the ability of agencies to coordinate and effectively minimize impacts when prevention measures fall short.

The goal of this primer is to provide guidance on how to incorporate the best available information on climate variability and change into emergency management planning, with a focus on the development and use of extreme weather event scenarios for use in exercises. The first section is aimed toward a broad audience, including emergency management practitioners who use extreme weather event scenarios. It provides an overview of available data and tools that can inform scenario design as well as techniques for scenario design based on the hazard of interest, the audience and application, and the technical skills and resources required to develop, summarize, and/or visualize the data. This section concludes with an overview of approaches and lessons learned related to extreme event response planning and exercise design. Overall, this section highlights the advantages of developing quantitative scenarios based on spatial data, which allows visualizations and interactive data explorations that can provide greater specificity in discussions related to preparedness and response strategies. It further highlights the advantages of developing a core expert working group to guide planning, holding pre-exercise workshops to engage diverse communities outside of the emergency management sector, and engaging decisionmakers post-exercise to communicate key issues and outcomes as well as potential approaches for mitigating consequences that were identified by participants.

The second section is aimed toward the scientific community and data developers involved in the creation of extreme weather event scenarios. This section provides technical guidance and detailed descriptions of four types of data resources and five analytical approaches that can be used to create extreme weather event scenarios based on the design considerations highlighted in section one. The computational resources and expertise required varies substantially across the options presented and is a primary consideration. These requirements, in addition to considerations related to audience and application, may determine the novelty and detail of the event, the detail of weather forecast information that can be provided, and the spatial extent across which the event can reasonably be modeled. The importance of, and approaches for, delivering information in a form that is accessible to emergency management practitioners is also discussed.
","language":"English","publisher":"Desert Research Institute","usgsCitation":"Albano, C.M., McCarthy, M.I., Mcafee, S.A., Wein, A., and Dettinger, M., 2024, Incorporating climate data into emergency planning and exercises: A primer for emergency management practioners and data developers, x, 32 p.","productDescription":"x, 32 p.","ipdsId":"IP-164123","costCenters":[{"id":36940,"text":"National Climate Adaptation Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":433003,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":433002,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.dri.edu/project/arkstormsierrafront-2-0/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Albano, Christine M.","contributorId":169455,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Albano","given":"Christine","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":12711,"text":"UC Davis","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":911158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCarthy, Maureen I.","contributorId":343457,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McCarthy","given":"Maureen","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[{"id":16138,"text":"Desert Research Institute","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":911159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McAfee, Stephanie Anne 0000-0002-9313-5857","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9313-5857","contributorId":343458,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McAfee","given":"Stephanie","middleInitial":"Anne","affiliations":[{"id":36940,"text":"National Climate Adaptation Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":911160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Wein, Anne 0000-0002-5516-3697 awein@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5516-3697","contributorId":589,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wein","given":"Anne","email":"awein@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":657,"text":"Western Geographic Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":911161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Dettinger, Michael D.","contributorId":343459,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Dettinger","given":"Michael D.","affiliations":[{"id":16138,"text":"Desert Research Institute","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":911162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Using 32 years of Ceded Territory of Wisconsin (CTWI) walleye (Sander vitreus) data, we estimated production (P), biomass (B), biomass turnover (P/B), yield (Y), and yield over production (Y/P) and tested for hyperstability in walleye yield. Most CTWI walleye populations showed low P, and B, and Y/P < 1. Yet, production overharvest (Y/P > 1) was prevalent among Wisconsin walleye recruitment-based management approaches (natural recruitment [NR], sustained only by stocking, combination). Production, B, and P/B have declined in NR populations, while Y and Y/P have remained constant. Walleye Y was hyperstable along a production gradient among all management approaches and fishery types (i.e., angling only, angling/tribal harvest combined). Diminishing productivity and hyperstable yield may be jointly contributing to observed walleye declines. We classified lakes into management groups of low, moderate, or high vulnerability to harvest based on Y/P and P/B dynamics and recommend that exploitation may need to decline to maintain or increase the adaptive capacity of CTWI walleye.
","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/cjfas-2023-0372","usgsCitation":"Mrnak, J.T., Embke, H.S., Wilkinson, We assessed genetic diversity, population structure, current effective population size, and demographic history of M. septentrionalis distributed across the United States to determine baseline levels pre-WNS. We analyzed RADseq data from 81 individuals from Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Additionally, we examined population genetic structure using discriminant analysis of principal components, fastStructure, and STRUCTURE. We then estimated effective population size and demographic history using fastsimcoal2. Similar levels of genetic diversity were found across all samples. We found no population genetic structure in the varied analyses from these contemporary samples. The best model for demographic history estimated a rapid population expansion followed by a slower expansion approximately 340,000 years ago. The vagility of M. septentrionalis, along with male dispersal and random mating, may provide a buffer against serious bottleneck effects stemming from rapid population declines due to WNS. This research provides a baseline for tracking and monitoring the influence of WNS on genetic diversity such as potential reduced diversity or increased population structuring in the future.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/jmammal/gyae056","usgsCitation":"Grimshaw, J.R., Donner, D., Perry, R., Ford, W., Silvis, A., Garcia, (2020) raised questions about possible tag-induced mortality.  Similar concerns in other species have generated considerable attention in recent years. Of 19 tagged plovers that departed Moorea on northward migration, only one bird (5 %) uploaded a complete migratory cycle to Argos.  Furthermore, contact was lost with 12 birds (63 %) variously during overwater flight, at stopover sites, or on nesting grounds; and no signals at all were received from 6 individuals (32%).  Such observations suggest that carrying a tag might be a life-threatening burden.  We cannot exclude the possibility that tag weight caused difficulties for the Moorea birds.  However, this seems an unlikely factor in that the device (tag plus harness) being carried weighed less than 3 % of body mass (see beyond).  Such a load is in accord with generally accepted albeit arbitrary limits.  Other tag-associated concerns such as altered aerodynamics, increased vulnerability to predation, and (given the complex nature of geomagnetic navigation, the possibility that tag electronics might interfere with sense of direction, are more difficult to evaluate.  Alternatively, loss of contact with tagged birds may be simply a matter of tag malfunction, battery failure, or a broken harness. To shed light on these uncertainties, and to explore the survival of GPS-tagged plovers on a nonbreeding ground in Hawaii, we conducted a controlled study using birds that winter in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (known locally as the Punchbowl).","language":"English","publisher":"International Wader Study Group","doi":"10.18194/ws.00348","usgsCitation":"Johnson, O.W., Weber, The Mayflower Section is a mine influenced Superfund Site in Colorado. This investigation utilized electromagnetic induction (EM or EMI), magnetic, and fiber optic distributed temperature system (FODTS) geophysical methods to measure the bulk earth electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, and temperature of specific surveyed volumes of the earth near the Mayflower Section of the Animas River. These physical parameters are used to understand the groundwater – surface water interactions, which can guide decision makers in their assessment of mine-impacted surface water. This report details the results from characterization and monitoring technologies to provide high data density and continuous monitoring of bulk earth electrical conductivity and temperature in the Mayflower section of the Animas River to identify zones of groundwater – surface water interactions and potential metal loading from mine influenced water. The investigation separated right and left bank characterization for each method and indicates more groundwater is entering from the right bank than the left bank and these predominantly right bank discharges potentially contain metal-rich water compared to the left bank. Results also indicate mineral veins facilitate preferential groundwater discharge to the river due to possible jointing, fractures, and permeability differences sometimes occurring along veins relative to host rock. For example, Boulder Gulch is likely groundwater dominated and may be receive water impacted by Mayflower Impoundments #1 and #2. Additionally, the beaver ponds near Blair Gulch may influence groundwater discharge and Mayflower Impoundment #4 is possibly impacting groundwater and surface water and may be connected to the wetlands to the west of the impoundment. These data could be further analyzed for smaller spatial scale analysis within areas of interest. The identification of these locations along sections of the river likely impacted by mine influenced groundwater potentially entering the Animas River and can be used by site investigators, decision makers, and stakeholders in mitigation decisions and strategies.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency","collaboration":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency","usgsCitation":"Werkema, D., Terry, N., and Trottier, B., 2024, Geophysical characterization of mine influenced groundwater and surface water in the Mayflower section of the Animas River, Bonita Peak Mining District, Silverton Colorado, 38 p.","productDescription":"38 p.","ipdsId":"IP-159820","costCenters":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480783,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://assessments.epa.gov/risk/document/&deid%3D362424"},{"id":481134,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Animas River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -107.6563034660742,\n              37.80974882626913\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.58602809458,\n              37.80974882626913\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.58602809458,\n              37.85248770149306\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.6563034660742,\n              37.85248770149306\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.6563034660742,\n              37.80974882626913\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Werkema, Dale","contributorId":294506,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Werkema","given":"Dale","affiliations":[{"id":35215,"text":"Environmental Protection Agency","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":924478,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Terry, Neil 0000-0002-3965-340X nterry@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3965-340X","contributorId":192554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Terry","given":"Neil","email":"nterry@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":486,"text":"OGW Branch of Geophysics","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":924479,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Trottier, Brett 0000-0002-6148-0875","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6148-0875","contributorId":304452,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Trottier","given":"Brett","affiliations":[{"id":66072,"text":"Pittsburgh, PA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":924480,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

These changes have likely altered prey availability for first feeding native fish species that hatch in early spring, including coregonines. While spring zooplankton density and community composition are routinely monitored in offshore areas of Lake Michigan, descriptions of zooplankton in nearshore areas such as shallow beach environments and associated diet characteristics among larval coregonine species are limited. In this study, we describe the nearshore (<1 m depth, beach environment) zooplankton community in northeastern Lake Michigan during early spring 2015-2019 and compare the diets and diet selectivity of larval Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and Cisco (C. artedi). Zooplankton density and composition varied among years, but calanoid copepods and copepod nauplii consistently dominated the zooplankton assemblage. Cisco and Lake Whitefish larvae were captured regularly, with Elk Rapids containing the highest proportion of Ciscoes each year. Calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were common in diets and estimated to have a positive selection. Although previous research has indicated high consumption of cyclopoid copepods by larval coregonines in Lake Michigan, our results provide new evidence that larval Lake Whitefish and Cisco of northeastern Lake Michigan will also consume and positively select for calanoid copepods when they are abundant. As such, should calanoid zooplankton continue to dominate the copepod community in Lake Michigan, larval coregonines appear capable of exploiting this abundant prey to improve their likelihood of survival to later life stages.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.jglr.2024.102380","usgsCitation":"Cubbage, M., Hook, T.O., Bunnell, D., Dieter, P., Ackiss, A.S., and Collingsworth, P.D., 2024, Larval coregonine density and diet composition along beaches of northern Lake Michigan: Journal of Great Lakes Research, v. 50, no. 4, 102380, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jglr.2024.102380.","productDescription":"102380, 11 p.","ipdsId":"IP-158559","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":464805,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","otherGeospatial":"Big Stone Bay, Bliss Beach, Elk Rapids, Petoskey State Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.43058826188877,\n              46.201622653234466\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.43058826188877,\n              44.2450026872275\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.961712626925,\n              44.2450026872275\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.961712626925,\n              46.201622653234466\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.43058826188877,\n              46.201622653234466\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"50","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cubbage, Marissa","contributorId":346932,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cubbage","given":"Marissa","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13186,"text":"Purdue University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":920256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hook, Tomas O.","contributorId":150480,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hook","given":"Tomas","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":13186,"text":"Purdue University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":920257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bunnell, David 0000-0003-3521-7747","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3521-7747","contributorId":217344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bunnell","given":"David","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":920258,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dieter, Patricia 0000-0003-1686-2679","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1686-2679","contributorId":217345,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dieter","given":"Patricia","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":920259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ackiss, Amanda Susanne 0000-0002-8726-7423","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8726-7423","contributorId":272165,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ackiss","given":"Amanda","email":"","middleInitial":"Susanne","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":920260,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Collingsworth, Paris D.","contributorId":145526,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Collingsworth","given":"Paris","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":920261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Beginning in 2015, the benthic preyfish survey expanded from US-only to incorporate Canadian sites, increasing the survey’s spatial coverage to a lake-wide scale. Additionally, sampling in eastern US embayments (Black River, Chaumont, Guffin, and Henderson Bays), that were historically sampled during a September bottom trawl survey to index Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens; 1978–2007), resumed in 2015. The current survey provides abundance indices for sculpins, Round Goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and Bloater (Coregonus hoyi) with survey techniques, gear and timing comparable to Lake Michigan. This alignment provides a necessary biological reference point for measuring the success of Lake Ontario Bloater reintroduction. In 2023, the collaborative benthic preyfish survey completed 188 bottom trawl tows across main lake and embayment sites at depths from 6 to 249 m. In total, the 2023 survey sampled 85,801 fish from 38 species. Round Goby was the most common species comprising 43% of the total catch, followed by Deepwater Sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii), and Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) at 22% and 13%, respectively. Slimy Sculpin (Cottus cognatus) lake-wide biomass density (0.06 kg/ha) remained low relative to historical observations from US waters during the 1980-1990s and was orders of magnitude lower in US than Canadian waters. Lake-wide Deepwater Sculpin biomass density remains high since the population recovery (4.1 kg/ha). Embayment catches continue to have unique species assemblages compared to main lake habitat. Historically common native benthic preyfish species like Trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus), Spottail Shiner (Notropis hudsonius), and darters (Etheostoma spp.), that are now rare at main lake trawl sites, still occur in some embayment trawl sites.","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Commission","usgsCitation":"O’Malley, B., Minihkeim, S.P., Mitchinson, O.M., Stahl, S.D., Goretzke, J.A., and Holden, J.P., 2024, Bottom trawl assessment of Lake Ontario's benthic preyfish community, 2023, 14 p.","productDescription":"14 p.","ipdsId":"IP-163567","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":432594,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":432593,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.glfc.org/publication-media-search.php"}],"country":"Canada, United States","otherGeospatial":"Lake Ontario","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.57887370293341,\n              42.975619501114664\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.22853190605852,\n              42.975619501114664\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.22853190605852,\n              44.71854185068483\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.57887370293341,\n              44.71854185068483\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.57887370293341,\n              42.975619501114664\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"O’Malley, Brian 0000-0001-5035-3080 bomalley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5035-3080","contributorId":216560,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Malley","given":"Brian","email":"bomalley@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":909660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Minihkeim, Scott P. 0000-0003-4958-2462","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4958-2462","contributorId":265808,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Minihkeim","given":"Scott","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":909661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mitchinson, Olivia Margaret 0009-0002-7999-1160","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0009-0002-7999-1160","contributorId":339869,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mitchinson","given":"Olivia","email":"","middleInitial":"Margaret","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":909662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Stahl, Scott David 0009-0002-0248-4523","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0009-0002-0248-4523","contributorId":339870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stahl","given":"Scott","email":"","middleInitial":"David","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":909663,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Goretzke, Jessica A 0000-0003-2504-3712","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2504-3712","contributorId":302058,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Goretzke","given":"Jessica","email":"","middleInitial":"A","affiliations":[{"id":13678,"text":"New York State Department of Environmental Conservation","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":909664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Holden, Jeremy P.","contributorId":251689,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Holden","given":"Jeremy","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":50374,"text":"Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests (OMNRF)","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":909665,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Water-quality constituent concentrations or densities are computed using regression models that relate in situ sensor values to laboratory analyses of periodically collected samples. These regression models currently (2024) follow no uniform published guidance and are individually documented through USGS reports. This report describes updated (2024) procedures designed to improve the consistency, quality, and timeliness of computed continuous water-quality data produced by the USGS KSWSC. Beginning in 2024, models developed by the USGS KSWSC that follow specific procedures and requirements related to sample collection, model fit, and model documentation outlined in this report are planned to be published and stored in the USGS National Real-Time Water Quality Data for the Nation Data Service. This report also describes USGS KSWSC procedures for evaluating and publishing time-series water-quality computations after initial model development and documentation. This guidance can be used to improve USGS KSWSC model development and data computation consistency and streamline the time-series water-quality computation process from model development to publication.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20241049","usgsCitation":"Stone, M.L., Lee, C.J., Rasmussen, T.J., Williams, T.J., Kramer, A.R., and Klager, B.J., 2024, Methods for computing water-quality concentrations and loads at sites operated by the U.S. Geological Survey Kansas Water Science Center: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2024–1049, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20241049.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 10 p.; 2 Appendixes","numberOfPages":"18","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-160483","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":431715,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1049/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":431716,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1049/ofr20241049.pdf","text":"Report","size":"628 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2024–1049"},{"id":431717,"rank":3,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1049/ofr20241049.XML"},{"id":431718,"rank":4,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1049/images/"},{"id":431720,"rank":6,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ofr20241049/full"},{"id":431719,"rank":5,"type":{"id":3,"text":"Appendix"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1049/downloads/","text":"Appendixes 1 and 2"}],"contact":"
Director, Kansas Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
1217 Biltmore Drive
Lawrence, KS 66049

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","tableOfContents":"

Abstract

Introduction

Procedures for Publishing Continuous Water-Quality Data in the U.S. Geological Survey Kansas Water Science Center

Summary

References Cited

Appendix 1. For Arctic breeding birds, basic knowledge of their annual cycle, specifically the timing, route, and movement behavior of migration, is needed to understand when and where populations may experience threats. We used a combination of geolocators and stable isotope analysis to identify route and timing of migration in Smith’s Longspurs (Calcarius pictus) that breed in Alaska’s Brooks Range. We trapped males on their breeding grounds from 2011 to 2014 and collected head feathers for stable isotopes of hydrogen (δ²H). We deployed 22 geolocators on a subset of individuals and retrieved four, which all overwintered in southern Texas. Individual start dates for fall migration based on geolocators were more variable than for the spring, and individuals were highly mobile while on their wintering grounds. Geolocators and stable isotope values were comparable across years and indicated that birds from the Brooks Range undergo their pre-nuptial molt in central Canada. We compared geolocator and stable isotope inferred locations to observations submitted to e-Bird and found that longspurs were distributed farther south during the winter months, but farther north during the spring than most eBird observations. Concurrent deployments of geolocator tags across Smith’s Longspurs’ breeding range would clarify whether migratory behaviors and routes are population-specific or shared widely across breeding locations.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Conservation and Ecology","doi":"10.5751/ACE-02629-190113","usgsCitation":"Will, A., McFarland, H., Latty, C., and Powell, A., 2024, Geolocators, stable isotopes, and citizen science identify migratory timing, route, and spring molt of Smith’s Longspurs: Avian Conservation and Ecology, v. 19, no. 1, 13, 8 p., https://doi.org/10.5751/ACE-02629-190113.","productDescription":"13, 8 p.","ipdsId":"IP-156425","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":433055,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":439236,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.5751/ace-02629-190113","text":"Publisher Index Page"}],"volume":"19","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Will, Alexis","contributorId":341227,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Will","given":"Alexis","affiliations":[{"id":7097,"text":"University of Alaska-Fairbanks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":908111,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McFarland, Heather","contributorId":341228,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McFarland","given":"Heather","affiliations":[{"id":6752,"text":"University of Alaska Fairbanks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":908112,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Latty, Christopher","contributorId":341229,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Latty","given":"Christopher","affiliations":[{"id":6661,"text":"US Fish and Wildlife Service","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":908113,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Powell, Abby 0000-0002-9783-134X abby_powell@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9783-134X","contributorId":176843,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Powell","given":"Abby","email":"abby_powell@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":908114,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

In the northern hardwood and boreal forests of the northeastern United States, tree mast events provide resource pulses that drive the population dynamics of small mammals, including the American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), a primary songbird nest predator. This study sought to determine whether mast availability ameliorates their abiotic limits, enabling red squirrel elevational distributions to temporarily expand and negatively impact high-elevation songbirds.

Location

Northeastern United States.

Methods

We used two independent datasets to evaluate our hypotheses. First, we fit a dynamic occupancy model using data from camera trap surveys to evaluate red squirrel distributional responses to pulses in the tree mast. We also assessed population responses using systematic auditory surveys analysed with an open-population binomial mixture model. Further, we used modelled red squirrel abundance in nest-survival models to evaluate whether their abundance is correlated with the daily nest survival of three songbird species.

Results

The tree mast provided a critical resource pulse that resulted in a two-fold increase in the annual elevational distribution of red squirrels. The elevational distribution of red squirrels ranged from a minimum of ~450 m (range: 663–1145 m asl) following two consecutive years without a masting event to a maximum of over 1000 m (range: 443–1545 m asl) after a large mast event. The daily nest survival of three songbird species tended to decline with an increase in the abundance of red squirrels.

Main Conclusions

Tree mast is a central biological phenomenon in many temperate and boreal forests. This study reveals how this resource pulse results in range changes in a small mammal that is both a seed and bird predator, as well as prey for many carnivores. Thus, understanding this phenomenon can inform the conservation and management of northern forests, including breeding songbirds.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/ddi.13861","usgsCitation":"Hallworth, M.T., Sirén, A., DeLuca, W., Duclos, T., McFarland, K.P., Hill, J.M., Rimmer, C.C., and This wide breadth of topics provides opportunities for collaboration and development of common tools for diverse users. In many cases, different information systems provide the spatial data and geographic content necessary for transportation and land-use planners to consider multiple lines of evidence. The Federal Highway Administration Office of Federal Lands Highway (FLH) and Federal Land Management Agency partners use detailed spatial and quantitative data to inform transportation decisions. However, logistic challenges to data sharing exist because data are often managed by separate agencies; data-exchange frameworks and interagency data agreements are insufficient; and consistency from aggregated data requires maintenance, coordination, and supporting infrastructure.

The FLH and U.S. Geological Survey collaboratively examined (1) use and availability of spatial data for transportation planning and (2) a possible mechanism to use more shared and consistent data in a common planning environment. The goals of this collaborative effort were to describe data needs from the perspective of planners and to identify opportunities for shared data resources. Results presented here focus on two workshops and a subsequent investigation of data and tools available from partner agencies. The objectives of this report are to (1) describe information used in transportation planning with geographic data; (2) identify spatially explicit data that inform transportation plans and could be shared among all partners; and (3) describe current platforms, planning and administrative opportunities, and potential barriers to developing an integrated planning tool.

Key information and data needs were identified in three major classes: system, user, and influential factors. System data are parts of the transportation network and information about the condition of individual segments and the network. User data provide details about the function of the system and insights into potential needs; for example, user trips between source and destinations inform road and network demands that can lead to congestion and safety issues (in the future, user data might also include scenarios and projections based on land-use plans). Influential data represent social and environmental factors that influence transit demands and network conditions. These factors could be popular locations or seasonal events that influence demand and congestion; wildlife habitat or migration intersections that affect safety and management priorities; or geologic features that influence hazards, maintenance, and safety. Responses described here provide specific information for web-tool design and give a framework for interagency communication and cooperation to address specific information needs for integrated planning. Existing web-mapping and web-services, and the data that inform them, are also described. Commonly, these data are created and published by one agency, and the core users are outside of that agency; for example, threatened species distributions are published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for consideration by planners in advance of National Environmental Policy Act (42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.) evaluation.

This report is provided to inform FLH leaders and Federal Land Management Agency partners by articulating user needs and requirements for integrated planning tool(s). Programmers creating a secure web-based data-sharing platform (with data-viewing, -analysis and -download functions) can use the information presented here to organize data and user interfaces. This integrated perspective can help FLH and Federal Land Management Agency partners develop transportation networks that better serve the needs of people in local communities and across States and the Nation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20241038","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Lands Highway Divisions","programNote":"Climate Adaptation Science Center & Land Change Science","usgsCitation":"Manier, D., Grisham, N., Armstrong, A., Henley, E., Doolittle, J., and Inman, R., 2024, Identifying transportation data and system needs for a Federal lands transportation data platform: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2024–1038, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20241038.","productDescription":"vi, 37 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-153797","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":431727,"rank":4,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1038/ofr20241038.xml"},{"id":431726,"rank":3,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1038/images"},{"id":431683,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1038/ofr20241038.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.42 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2024-1038"},{"id":431682,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2024/1038/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":431765,"rank":5,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ofr20241038/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"OFR 2024-1038"}],"contact":"
Director, Fort Collins Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
2150 Centre Ave., Bldg. The results were similar, 7.3 ± 0.9 (mean ± standard error; RSET) versus 6.2 ± 0.6 mm year−1 (RTK) (P = 0.216), and were greater than relative sea level rise (RSLR) computed at the nearest long-term tide station (3.9 ± 0.29 mm year−1). Despite having shown elevation gain, these wetlands continue to drown and convert to open water. Episodic, multi-day GPS measurements on geodetic control marks at BNWR between 2005 and 2023 revealed a substantial vertical land motion (VLM) signal. From 2005 to 2015, three reference marks used to control the 2010–2013 RTK study lost on average 6.0 ± 0.7 mm year−1, corresponding to 80% and 94% of the elevation gain measured by the RSET and RTK techniques, respectively. The longer 18-year subsidence trend measured on one of these marks was lower, 3.9 ± 0.7 mm year−1, highlighting important interannual variability. Wetland elevation change measurements need to account for VLM occurring below the reference marks used to measure elevation change. Estimates from the nearest long-term tide station may not be applicable to the wetland if the tide station is in a different geological setting. At BNWR, VLM was higher than the VLM at the Cambridge tide station, which helps explain why wetlands at BNWR are not keeping pace with RSLR despite the measured high rates of elevation gain.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s12237-024-01406-y","usgsCitation":"Hensel, P., Cahoon, D., Guntenspergen, G.R., Mitchell, L.G., Whitbeck, M., and Scott, G., 2024, Incorporating measurements of vertical land motion in wetland surface elevation change analyses: Estuaries and Coasts, v. 47, p. 2094-2105, https://doi.org/10.1007/s12237-024-01406-y.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"2094","endPage":"2105","ipdsId":"IP-156627","costCenters":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":481759,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","otherGeospatial":"Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -76.22736128311278,\n 38.483803584358895\n ],\n [\n -76.22736128311278,\n 38.3793129820732\n ],\n [\n -76.0029285676572,\n 38.3793129820732\n ],\n [\n -76.0029285676572,\n 38.483803584358895\n ],\n [\n -76.22736128311278,\n 38.483803584358895\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"47","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2024-07-31","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hensel, P.","contributorId":350602,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hensel","given":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":34670,"text":"NOAA National Geodetic Survey","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":926401,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cahoon, Donald R. 0000-0002-2591-5667","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2591-5667","contributorId":219657,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cahoon","given":"Donald","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":926402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Guntenspergen, Glenn R. 0000-0002-8593-0244 glenn_guntenspergen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8593-0244","contributorId":2885,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guntenspergen","given":"Glenn","email":"glenn_guntenspergen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":926403,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Mitchell, L. During the October 19, 1989 M6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred ~100 km south of the Bay Bridge, a section of the upper deck of the truss bridge fell onto the lower deck – thus closing this important lifeline between San Francisco and Oakland. The SAS is unique, self-anchored, and suspended by a single tower that is pivotal in trafficking the cable and hanger system to support the decks. The SAS bridge is extensively instrumented by the California Geological Survey’s Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP). There are approximately 85 channels of accelerometers in the seismic monitoring system that recorded the October 14, 2019 Mw4.6 Pleasant Hill earthquake. The data allow a complex but identifiable coupled response of the deck, tower, and cable system. Both acceleration and displacement time-history data are used to extract significant frequencies using system identification methods, including spectral analyses. Results are compared to those from finite-element-model (FEM) analyses carried out during the design and analysis process of the bridge in 2002 (Nader et al. 2002). There are differences between FEM analyses results and those from the low amplitude shaking caused by a seismic event. An apparent frequency (period) of the SAS bridge is assessed (approximately 5.2 seconds). In a plot of deck length versus period, there is an almost linear relationship with periods of other regular suspension bridges, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Carquinez Bridge, both in the San Francisco Bay.

","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 18th WCEE 2024","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"International Association for Earthquake Engineering","usgsCitation":"Celebi, M., 2024, The new self-anchored suspension (SAS) San Francisco Bay Bridge- Its response to a small earthquake, in Proceedings of the 18th WCEE 2024, 12 p.","productDescription":"12 p.","ipdsId":"IP-156804","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":501219,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://proceedings-wcee.org/view.html?id=22667&conference=18WCEE","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":501220,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay Bridge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.31886503355894,\n              37.829310526676224\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.36404690468478,\n              37.829310526676224\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.36404690468478,\n              37.810127987465165\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.31886503355894,\n              37.810127987465165\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.31886503355894,\n              37.829310526676224\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Celebi, Mehmet 0000-0002-4769-7357 celebi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4769-7357","contributorId":200969,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Celebi","given":"Mehmet","email":"celebi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":926782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Within Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, the restoration of Kaloko Fishpond for traditional aquaculture management is a goal of both the National Park Service (NPS) and Hui Kaloko-Honokōhau, a community-based group of kia'i, i.e., caretakers and native Hawaiian cultural practitioners. However, existing data on the demographics and condition of the fish populations within the pond, and the fish-habitat quality are poor to non-existent. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: catalog fish species composition and distribution in the pond; estimate the abundance of focal species/taxonomic groups; and evaluate the occupancy patterns of the invasive algae Acanthophora spicifera and Upside-down Jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda. As part of these objectives, a survey protocol and analysis framework were designed and evaluated to ensure that the NPS and community group would be able to refine and implement them to continue their monitoring efforts. We conducted dual-observer shore-based visual surveys multiple times per week during September-October 2020 and April-September 2022. A total of 41 species/taxonomic groups were recorded over the course of the surveys. The largest number of species/taxonomic groups were observed at survey stations located on or near the kuapā, or wall separating the fishpond from the ocean. N-mixture models fitted to the data estimated a total population of 353 – 392 mullets, 134 – 192 flagtails (āholehole), and 189 – 277 Milkfish (Awa) Chanos chanos occurring within the 1.2-ha portion of Kaloko Fishpond that could be surveyed visually from the shoreline. Multi-season occupancy models fitted to the surveyed presence of A. spicifera and Upside-down Jellyfish indicted sites throughout most of the pond exhibited moderate and consistent occupancy (ψ = 0.30 – 0.40) throughout much of the pond, except for the northeast corner of the pond (Kaloko Iki) where colonization rates were lower and extinction rates higher than other areas within Kaloko. The visual survey method developed for this study provides a low-cost and effective starting point for the development of methodology that can be used both by NPS personnel and volunteers from the community group. However, we were only able to estimate fish populations for approximately 24% of the area of Kaloko Fishpond with this method. Given that the deeper areas of Kaloko Fishpond are completely inaccessible to the visual survey method used, generating population estimates for the entire pond based on the parameters estimated in the current study is not recommended without further investigation into fish movement and habitat use. Various means to refine this protocol to better meet the needs and abilities of the NPS and community group are proposed.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Hawai'i","usgsCitation":"Grabowski, T.B., Tabandera, R., Greenwald, N., and Larson, A., 2024, Assessing habitat use and population dynamics of fisheries resources at Kaloko Fishpond: Hawai’i Cooperative Fishery Research Unit Technical Report Series HCFRU-003, 80 p.","productDescription":"80 p.","ipdsId":"IP-154335","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":494691,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/10790/43639","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":494905,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Kalako Fishpond","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.03516036623958,\n              19.68986132494203\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.03516036623958,\n              19.686419593600434\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.0305731643826,\n              19.686419593600434\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.0305731643826,\n              19.68986132494203\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.03516036623958,\n              19.68986132494203\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2024-07-31","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grabowski, Timothy B. 0000-0001-9763-8948 tgrabowski@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9763-8948","contributorId":4178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grabowski","given":"Timothy","email":"tgrabowski@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":947091,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tabandera, Ricky","contributorId":360473,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tabandera","given":"Ricky","affiliations":[{"id":64379,"text":"University of Hawai'i at Hilo","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":947092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Greenwald, Nathaniel","contributorId":360476,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Greenwald","given":"Nathaniel","affiliations":[{"id":64379,"text":"University of Hawai'i at Hilo","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":947093,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Larson, Annie","contributorId":360479,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Larson","given":"Annie","affiliations":[{"id":64379,"text":"University of Hawai'i at Hilo","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":947094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This rich biodiversity underpins the ecological intactness and functioning of mountain ecosystems, which are imperative for the provision of key ecosystem services. A considerable amount of data are required to assess ecological intactness and ecosystem functioning and, given the profound anthropogenic pressures many mountain regions are being subjected to, are urgently needed. However, data on mountain biodiversity remain lacking. The essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) framework can help focus efforts related to detecting, investigating, predicting, and managing global biodiversity change, but has not yet been considered in the context of mountains. Here, we review key biological processes and physical phenomena that strongly influence mountain biodiversity and ecosystems and elucidate their associations with potential mountain EBVs. We identify seven EBVs of highest relevance for tracking and understanding the most critical drivers and responses of mountain biodiversity change. If they are implemented, the selected EBVs will contribute useful information to inform management and policy interventions seeking to halt mountain biodiversity loss and maintain functional mountain ecosystems.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1093/biosci/biae052","usgsCitation":"Schmeller, D., Thornton, J., Urbach, D., Alexander, J., Jetz, W., Kulonen, A., Although gold standard CWD diagnostics involve postmortem testing of medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes or obex (brain stem), a key tissue sample for antemortem testing is rectoanal mucosa–associated lymphoid tissue (RAMALT). However, collection of an adequate sample (i.e., enough lymphoid follicles) may be affected by factors such as deer age, repeated sampling, skill of the sampler, and adverse conditions during collection. Here, we document the protocol used to train personnel for RAMALT collection in a large study of free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Wisconsin, USA, and determine factors that contributed to the occurrence of inadequate RAMALT samples. Our training protocol included hands-on experience with postmortem tissues, as well as a mentored collection process in the field. Collection of RAMALT under field conditions was highly successful, with 763/806 (94.7%) samples deemed adequate for subsequent testing. Although inadequate samples were rare, they were more likely to occur with older deer and when samples were collected at dusk (i.e., limited ambient lighting). We conclude that RAMALT collection can be highly successful under adverse field conditions, including with technicians with limited prior veterinary experience, and we provide details of our training program to facilitate repeatability in other antemortem CWD testing efforts.
","language":"English","publisher":"Allen Press","doi":"10.7589/jwd-d-24-00020","usgsCitation":"Gilbertson, M.,
