The study was conducted from October 1985-October 1988 in cooperation with the State of New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Water Resources Division. The data include information on 1,232 inventory sites, 66 exploration boreholes drilled for this study, and grain-size analyses of 61 split-spoon sediment samples. Water-level data were collected from 33 observation wells drilled during the course of the project . Water-quality analyses collected during this study are presented for 24 observation and 6 public supply wells. Water-quality properties measured in the field include temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen concentration, and pH. Samples from the 30 wells were analyzed in the laboratory for nutrients, common anions and cations, and selected volatile organic compounds . Stratigraphic correlations are supported by ammonite zonation. No new stratigraphic names are introduced, and no nomenclature problems are discussed. Five long measured sections through the Mesaverde Group are described. \r\n\r\nThe lower part of the Mesaverde Group, comprising the Rock Springs, Blair, Haystack Mountains, Allen Ridge, and Iles Formations, was deposited during a major eastward regression of the interior Cretaceous seaway of North America during the late Santonian and early Campanian. This regression was followed by regional uplift of the central Rocky Mountain area during the middle Campanian. The regional uplift was accompanied by widespread nondeposition and erosion, which, in turn, were followed by deposition of the Ericson and Pine Ridge Sandstones. The upper part of the Mesaverde Group, comprising the Almond and Williams Fork Formations, was deposited during a major westward transgression of the interior seaway in the early Maestrichtian. The major marine transgressions and regressions of the interior seaway were caused by eustatic changes of sea level, whereas intervening periods of nondeposition and erosion resulted from tectonism in the Sevier orogenic belt west of the study area. \r\n\r\nFormations of the Mesaverde Group are composed of sediments deposited in a landward-seaward progression of alluvial-plain, floodplain, coastal-plain, barrier-plain, tidal-flat, delta-plain, marine-shoreline, and marine-shelf and slope depositional environments. Each of these depositional environments is represented by specific lithofacies, sedimentary structures, and fossils, which are characteristic of depositional settings determined by water salinity, water depth, sedimentary and diagenetic processes, and the nature of sediment source terranes. \r\n\r\nThe Mesaverde Group was deposited mainly along the western margins of the interior Cretaceous seaway as marine shorelines that trended north to northeast across the study area. Arcuate deltas, which formed at the mouths of major rivers along these shorelines, spread eastward onto shallow marine shelves. Embayed shoreline areas between the deltas were the sites of barrier-island and tidal-flat deposition. Alluvial-plain, flood-plain, and coastal-plain environments were present inland. The marine shorelines were tidally influenced and wave dominated, and shoreline deposits were mostly thick, linear sheets of quartzose sandstone. Deposition was largely controlled by the emergence or submergence of shoreline areas. A large amount of information on treatment practices and effluent characteristics exists, and some of this information is available from Federal and State computer data bases. This report contains discharge records for 145 streamflow-gaging stations; stage only records for 13 lake-gaging stations; stage and contents, for 5 lakes and reservoirs; water-quality records for 21 streamflow-gaging stations; water-level records for 51 observation wells; and water-temperature records for 4 observation wells. Also included are 48 crest-stage partial- record stations and 8 low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program. These bedrock units and glacial deposits have been designated for study as part of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Regional Aquifer System Analysis program, a nationwide program to assess the regional hydrology, geology and water quality of the Nation 's most important aquifers. The purpose of the study is to define the hydrology, geochemistry, and geologic framework of the aquifer system within the Silurian and Devonian rocks and glacial deposits, with emphasis on describing the groundwater flow patterns and characterizing the water quality. The study, which began in 1988 , is expected to be completed in 1993. In 1980, the aquifers in the study area supplied more than 280 million gallons of water/day to industry, agriculture, and a population of more than 6.3 million people. With a projected future population growth to 7.1 million in 1990, and with intensified agricultural and industrial uses, water withdrawals from these bedrock and glacial aquifers are expected to be increased. The most significant groundwater problems in the study area result from the pronounced areal differences in availability and quality of the groundwater. These differences are related to the lateral discontinuity of many of the glacial deposits and to variations in secondary permeability of the bedrock aquifers associated with patterns of fracturing. Planned activities of the study include compilation of available geohydrologic and water quality data, such as groundwater levels, geohydrologic properties of aquifers, chemical analyses, land use and water use data, and ancillary data such as digital satellite images. Additional geohydrologic and water quality data may be collected from existing wells or wells that may be drilled for this study. A computerized, geographic information system will be used as a data base management tool and for spatial analysis and presentation of the data. A digital computer model will be developed to study the regional groundwater flow system and to investigate the effects of development on the aquifer system. The three projects selected for study included the use of the following configuration of software and hardware: Ventura Publisher software on an IBM model AT personal computer, PageMaker software on a Macintosh computer, and FrameMaker software on a Sun Microsystems workstation. The following assessment criteria were to be addressed in the pilot studies: The combined use of text, tables, and graphics; analysis of time; ease of learning; compatibility with the existing minicomputer system; and technical limitations. It was considered essential that the camera-ready copy produced be in a format suitable for publication. Visual improvement alone was not a consideration. This report consolidates and summarizes the findings of the electronic report processing pilot projects. Text and table files originating on the existing minicomputer system were successfully transformed to the electronic report processing systems in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format. Graphics prepared using a proprietary graphics software package were transferred to all the electronic report processing software through the use of Computer Graphic Metafiles. Graphics from other sources were entered into the systems by scanning paper images. Comparative analysis of time needed to process text and tables by the electronic report processing systems and by conventional methods indicated that, although more time is invested in creating the original page composition for an electronically processed report , substantial time is saved in producing subsequent reports because the format can be stored and re-used by electronic means as a template. Because of the more compact page layouts, costs of printing the reports were 15% to 25% less than costs of printing the reports prepared by conventional methods. Because the largest report workload in the offices conducting water resources investigations is preparation of Water-Resources Investigations Reports, Open-File Reports, and annual State Data Reports, the pilot studies only involved these projects. Hydrologic data were collected at seven inflow sites and one outflow site between 1982 and 1987 to define water-quality characteristics. Data include streamflow data and 56 physical and chemical characteristics of streamwater. Concentrations of some constituents at inflow sites were as much as 10-to 110-times greater than background concentrations in streams relatively unaffected by man. At the outflow site, these constituents generally were 2-to 3-times greater than background values. The minimum dissolved-oxygen concentration measured at an inflow site was 0.6 mg/L, whereas the minimum concentration measured at the outflow site was 6.7 milligrams per liter. Significant differences in other physical characteristics between inflow and outflow sites include a reduction in maximum concentration of suspended sediment from 1,850 milligrams per liter in an inflow sample to 100 milligrams per liter in an outflow sample, and a reduction of maximum specific-conductance values from more than 1,200 microsiemens/centimeter in an inflow sample to 140 microsiemens per centimeter in the outflow. The maximum concentration of total nitrogen at inflow sites was 33 milligrams per liter compared with 4.5 milligrams per liter at the outflow site. Similarly, the maximum total phosphorus concentration at inflow sites was 20 milligrams per liter, but 0.22 milligrams per liter at the outflow site. Average annual loads of nitrogen and phosphorus in the outflow were as much as 66 percent and 21 percent of inflow loads, respectively. The location of 624 salt domes is shown on a map at a scale of 1:1 ,500,000. A color-coding system was used to show that the occurrence, size, shape, and location of these domes varies among sources. Two tables of additional data accompany the map and include other available information such as: identifying sources, depth to salt and caprock, diameter, volume, name, and uppermost zone of surrounding sediment that is penetrated, as well as the number of matches between sources. The locations of salt domes that penetrate specific zones within the gulf coast regional aquifer system are shown on maps. The minimum dissolved-oxygen concentration measured at an inflow site was 1.0 mg/L, whereas the minimum concentration measured at the outflow site was 4.9 mg/L. Significant differences in other physical characteristics between inflow and outflow sites include a reduction in maximum concentration of suspended sediment from 2,360 mg/L in an inflow sample to 130 mg/L at the outflow site and a reduction of maximum specific conductance values from more than 1,100 microsiemens/centimeter in an inflow sample to 301 microsiemens/centimeter in outflow. The maximum concentration of total nitrogen at inflow sites was 27.0 mg/L compared with 3.2 mg/L at the outflow site. The maximum total phosphorus concentration at inflow sites was 13.0 mg/L compared with 0.6 mg/L at the outflow site. Average annual loads of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the outflow were as much as 67% and 40% of inflow loads, respectively. Maximum yields at an inflow site were 5.8 t/sq mi (tons per square mile) for nitrogen and 1.4 t/sq mi for phosphorus.
