Attention is focused on the nature and origin of domes, grabens, and breccia pipes, structures that are unusually well developed in the area. The sedimentary rocks, of Cretaceous age, are overlain and intruded by igneous rocks of Tertiary age. Much of the structural deformation was an accompaniment of igneous intrusion.

The Terlingua uplift, an irregular dome with a structural relief of several thousand feet, covers about half of the district. The southern boundary of the uplift is a steep monocline. Smaller domes, found throughout the district, were formed by igneous uplift. Evidence for this origin includes exposures of the igneous rock, the occurrence of baked rock on the domes, and theoretical consideration of the forces necessary to form a dome.

Almost all the major faults are normal faults bounding depressed tracts, or grabens. Most of the major faults trend northwest; the strike varies markedly, with both sinuous curves and angular turns. The vertical displacement of the grabens below adjacent blocks varies, up to approximately 2,000 feet. Minor faults belong to two sets; one set trends northwest, parallel to the major faults, and the other northeast.

Masses of breccia with a pipelike or chimneylike shape have been designated descriptively as breccia-filled pipes, or simply breccia pipes. A total of 76 breccia pipes was mapped, and four typical breccia pipes are described in detail. They range from 75 feet to 500 feet in diameter, and one has been explored vertically for more than 800 feet. The top of one breccia pipe has been found, in the Chisos mine, but the bottom of none has been found. The displacement of the fragments is downward, commonly several hundred feet, and in one instance more than 1,000 feet. The nature of the breccia and its walls indicates collapse due to undermining as the origin of the Terlingua pipes. Features, common to all the pipes, that point to this origin are the downward displacement of the fragments, the absence of drag or thrust structures, the presence of slump structures along the walls, and the vertical cylindrical form.

The general structural problems of the district include the age relations, the origin of the uplift, the origin of the domes, and the origin of the grabens. The earliest structural movement involving the Cretaceous rocks was the beginning of rise of the Terlingua uplift. Before this rise ceased, the graben faulting probably began. Volcanism and widespread hypabyssal intrusion, which was accompanied by doming, was partly contemporaneous with graben faulting. The breccia pipes were formed after the beginning, and before the end, of igneous activity. Minor faulting, accompanied by mineralization, continued later than other structural movements, The Terlingua uplift was probably caused primarily by laccolithic igneous intrusion but was influenced by horizontal compression. A basic intrusion, rather than a silicic intrusion, is required to explain the exposed igneous rocks. The geometry of the large grabens indicates that they are relatively superficial accompaniments of horizontal extension. It is suggested that horizontal extension of the upper part of the earth's crust occurred during the formation of the Terlingua uplift and was accompanied by graben faulting.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr509","usgsCitation":"Thompson, G.A., 1950, Structural geology of the Terlingua quicksilver district, Texas (Superceded by PP 312): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 50-9, Report: vii, 81 p.; Plate: 63.29 x 19.90 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr509.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 81 p.; Plate: 63.29 x 19.90 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148259,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1950/0009/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":465394,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1950/0009/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":465395,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1950/0009/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"25000","country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Terlingua quicksilver district","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.68860970649406,\n              29.973169828363282\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.68860970649406,\n              28.96907322607484\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.46011509896579,\n              28.96907322607484\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.46011509896579,\n              29.973169828363282\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.68860970649406,\n              29.973169828363282\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Superceded by PP 312","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49cd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thompson, George Albert Jr.","contributorId":43367,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"George","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Albert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172488,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This shortage is not the first that has affected an American community and it is not the most serious. Ample sources of additional water are known to exist in Upstate New York and construction that will bring this water to the city is being pushed as rapidly as possible. Nevertheless, the fact that our largest city, the center of our business life, has a water shortage, even though it is temporary, causes even the layman to realize something of the importance that water has in our national life and our national economy. In nearly every State in the Union, one or more communities now has or has had water problems as serious as or more serious than that which face New York City. These problems are springing up in increasing numbers and it is high time that serious consideration be given to the question of the adequacy of our water supplies. The flow in all the developed springs and headwater streams within this area, here designated as the Tecolote Tunnel Area of the purpose of this report, is generally measured monthly. The primary purpose of this second progress report is to make available to the public all factual data regarding the flow at these locations obtained since the preparation of the first progress report, issued in May 1949.
\n
\nNear the mid-point of this area the Bureau of Reclamation and the Santa Barbara County Water Agency proposed a tunnel, known as Tecolote Tunnel, for the purpose of diverting a portion of the runoff of the Santa Ynez River drainage area into water-deficient Santa Barbara and the coastal areas to the east and west, Because the water users of the mountain springs in the Tecolote Tunnel Area are somewhat apprehensive as to the influence this tunnel may have on their present water supply, the Santa Barbara Water Agency has requested the Geological Survey to obtain records of flow in their springs at frequent and regular intervals. During the current fiscal year these observations have been made as a result of a cooperative agreement between the Geological Survey and the Santa Barbara County Water Agency whereby each paid half the cost of the investigation. During the previous fiscal year all the costs to the Geological Survey in obtaining these observations were completely reimbursed by the Bureau of Reclamation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr50101","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency","usgsCitation":"Troxell, H.C., and Burgess, C., 1950, Second progress report on the cooperative investigation of springs and stream flow in the Tecolote Tunnel area of Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 50-101, 156 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr50101.","productDescription":"156 p.","numberOfPages":"159","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287187,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1950/0101/report.pdf"},{"id":287188,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1950/0101/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"50000","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Tecolote Tunnel","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -120.083333,34.25 ], [ -120.083333,34.616667 ], [ -119.45,34.616667 ], [ -119.45,34.25 ], [ -120.083333,34.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc336","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Troxell, Harold C.","contributorId":33354,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Troxell","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246325,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Burgess, C.E.","contributorId":64329,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burgess","given":"C.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Z. Columbia, Superintendent of the Ambridge Water Works, the United States Geological Survey conducted a \"pumping test\" in the Ambridge well field on November 10, 1949. As used in this report, \"pumping test\" means pumping a well at a fixed rate to determine the hydrologic properties of the water-bearing formation. By measuring the decline and recovery of water level in the pumped well and in other observation wells the necessary information is obtained for computing these properties.
\n
\n
Such procedures are part of the field activities of the ground-water program in Pennsylvania being sponsored jointly by the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey and the United States Geological Survey.
\n
\n
The amount of water that can be pumped from an underground formation depends upon its ability to transmit water to a well and upon the amount of water that is released from storage when the water table or pressure head is lowered. The first is measured by the coefficient of transmissibility and the second by the coefficient of storage. By building a tunnel three miles long from Scenery Grove to tap Scenery Lake at elevation 900 feet and a dam to raise Scenery Lake to elevation 1020 feet, the flow of Scenery Creek can be regulated and 16,000 firm horsepower developed. No stream flow records are available on Scenery Creek but 14 years record of the flow of Cascade Creek, the adjacent drainage on the south, has been used for power estimates. A gaging station was established on Scenery Creek in September 1949, and as records become available the estimates contained in this report will require revision. This work is part of a larger cooperative program that includes surface-water investigations, geologic studies, and topographic mapping. The purpose of the ground-water studies is to obtain detailed information concerning the occurrence and availability of ground water throughout the State. The information is used by the Highway Division of the Department of Public Works in connection with design, construction, and maintenance of highways. These studies also provided a basis for the more effective utilization of the ground-water resources of the State. They indicate where additional developments can be made safely or where present use may be excessive.
