Blood volumes were estimated with both markers separately by the tracer-hematocrit method and as the combination of the <sup>51</sup>Cr-RBC packed cell and <sup>125</sup>I-BSA plasma volumes. Mean whole body blood volume was significantly less when calculated from the <sup>51</sup>Cr-RBC tracer data (3.52&plusmn;0.78 ml/100 g; &plusmn;SD) than when calculated with the <sup>125</sup>I-BSA tracer (5.06&plusmn;0.86 ml/100 g) or as the sum of the two volumes combined (4.49&plusmn;0.60 ml/100 g). The whole body hematocrit (28&plusmn;5%), estimated as the quotient of the <sup>51</sup>Cr-RBC volume divided by the sum of the <sup>125</sup>I-BSA and the <sup>51</sup>Cr-RBC volumes, also was significantly less than the dorsal aortic microhematocrit (36&plusmn;4%). Estimates of total blood volumes in most tissues were significantly smaller when calculated from the<sup>51</sup>Cr-RBC data than when calculated by the other two methods. Tissue blood volumes were greatest in highly vascularized and well perfused tissues and least in poorly vascularized tissues. The relative degree of vascularization among tissues generally remained the same regardless of whether the red cell or the plasma tracer was used to calculated blood volume. Since at least late Miocene time this sector of the ridge has been obliquely underthrust 30° west of orthogonal convergence by the northwestward converging Pacific plate at a rate of 80–90 km/m.y. Our data indicate that prior to late Eocene time the forearc region was composed of rocks of the arc massif thinly mantled by slope deposits; the forearc region probably lacked both major depositional basins and a tectonically attached accretionary prism of offscraped oceanic deposits. Beginning in latest Miocene or earliest Pliocene time, a zone of outer-arc structural highs and a forearc basin began to form. Formation of these companion intraarc structures may be linked to the late Neogene growth of an accretionary wedge that formed as the result of the deposition of a thick turbidite wedge in the Aleutian Trench. Initial structures of the zone of outer-arc highs formed as the thickening wedge underran, compressively deformed, and uplifted the seaward edge of the arc massif above a landward dipping backstop thrust. Forearc basin strata ponded arcward of the elevating zone of outer-arc highs. However, most younger structures of the zone of outer-arc highs cannot be ascribed simply to the orthogonal effects of an underrunning wedge. Oblique convergence created a major right-lateral shear zone (the Hawley Ridge shear zone) that longitudinally disrupted the zone of outer-arc highs, truncating the seaward flank of the forearc basin and shearing the southern limb of Hawley Ridge, an exceptionally large antiformal outer-arc high structure. Slivers of forearc basement rocks and overlying strata have been transported along the shear zone that is flanked by differentially elevated structures attributed to localized transpressive and transtensional processes. Uplift of Hawley Ridge may be related to the thickening of the arc massif by westward directed basement duplexes. In addition, the forearc is disrupted by structures transverse to the margin that occur where unusually high-stress accumulations have resulted in the rupture of repeated great earthquakes. It is likely that many ancient active margins evolved in tectonic and depositional settings similar to those of the central Aleutian Ridge. We suggest that annual survival rate is a more appropriate life history parameter for most comparative life history analyses. Observed maximum lifespans estimate complicated functions of survival and sampling probabilities. Annual survival rate estimates derived from modern band-recovery statistical procedures are becoming available for a variety of organisms. We compiled annual survival rate estimates and observed maximum longevities derived from band recovery data for North American waterfowl. Observed maximum longevities were not correlated with the annual survival rate estimates and appear to be unstable over time. Thirty-six of the 49 species of shorebirds that breed in North America spend most of the year in Latin America. Because populations of most species breed and winter at remote sites, it may be most feasible to monitor their numbers at migration stopovers. In this study, we used statistical trend analysis methods, developed for the North America Breeding Bird Survey, to analyze data on shorebird populations during southbound migration in the United States. Survey data were collected by volunteers in the International Shorebird Survey (ISS). The analyses indicate that whimbrels&nbsp;</span><i>Numenius phaeopus</i><span>, short-billed dowitchers&nbsp;</span><i>Limnodromus griseus</i><span>, and sanderlings&nbsp;</span><i>Calidris alba</i><span>&nbsp;have undergone statistically significant declines. Methodological concerns over both the ISS and the trend analysis procedures are discussed in detail and biological interpretations of the results are There was weak evidence of year-to-year variation in annual survival rates during the study period. The Jolly-Seber models used to estimate survival rates also generated estimates of population size and capture probabilities. To determine the relative importance of adult mortality and permanent emigration in contributing to the estimated annual loss of one-fourth of the breeding population will require further study of intercolony movement between all the major colony sites. Most permanent residents and temperate-zone migrants did not show a general pattern of decrease during this period.  Field data from Mexico were used to classify a subset of the neotropical migrants as using forest or scrub habitats during winter.  Population declines during 1978-1987 were significantly greater among the forest-wintering species, while populations of scrub-wintering species increased.  The same subset of neotropical migrants also showed overall declines in forest-breeding species, but no significant differences existed between species breeding in forest and scrub habitats. We used a computer program (MICROMORT) developed for the analysis of radiotelemetry data (Heisey and Fuller 1985) to estimate nest success and cause-specific failure rates, and then compared these parameters and hatchability between sites and among years. Nest success and causes of failure varied by species, site, and year. The most important causes of nest failure were usually predation, desertion, and water-level changes. However, embryotoxicosis (mortality, deformity, and lack of embryonic development) was the most important cause of nest failure in Eared Grebes (<i>Podiceps nigricollis</i>) at Kesterson Reservoir. Previous studies have shown that many neotropical migrant bird species seem to depend on extensive forested areas, but the specific area requirements of individual species have not been clarified sufficiently to aid in design and management of effective preserves. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>For this 5-year study, bird and vegetation data were obtained at 469 points in forests ranging in area from 0.1 ha to more than 3,000 ha in Maryland and adjacent states. Data were analyzed first by stepwise regression to identify habitat factors that had the greatest influence on relative abundance of each bird species. In the relatively undisturbed mature forests studied, degree of isolation and area were significant predictors of relative abundance for more bird species than were any habitat variables. For species for which forest area was a significant predictor of abundance, we used logistic regression to examine the relationship between forest area and the probability of detecting the species. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>In managing forest lands for wildlife, top priority should go toward providing for the needs of area-sensitive or rare species rather than increasing species diversity per se. Avian species that occur in small and disturbed forests are generalists that are adapted to survival under edge conditions and need no special assistance from man. Forest reserves with thousands of hectares are required to have the highest probability of providing for the least common species of forest birds in a region. However, if preservation of large contiguous forest tracts is not a realistic option, results of this study suggest 2 alternative approaches. First, if other habitat attributes also are considered, smaller forests may provide suitable breeding sites for relatively rare species. Atrazine residues have been detected in runoff from treated fields in lakes and streams at phytotoxic levels. Birds and mammals were comparatively resistant, with a low probability for atrazine accumulation and retention. Data are lacking on indirect effects of atrazine on wildlife granivores and insectivores. Direct effects to aquatic fauna occur at 94 micrograms/l, and higher; however, indirect effects may occur at 20 micrograms/l, and higher, partly through reduction of the food supply of herbivores, and partly through loss of macrophyte habitat. Some of the hawk lookouts increased their hours of observation from 1979-1985, thereby confounding the total counts.  Data recording and missing data hamper coding of data and their use with modern analytical techniques.  Coefficients of variation among years in counts averaged about 40%. The scale is defined such that a magnitude-3 earthquake recorded on a Wood-Anderson torsion seismometer at a distance of 100 km would write a record with a peak excursion of 1 mm. To be useful, some means are needed to correct recordings to the standard distance of 100 km. Richter provides a table of correction values, which he terms -log A<sub>o</sub>, the latest of which is contained in his 1958 textbook. A new analysis of over 9000 readings from almost 1000 earthquakes in the southern California region was recently completed to redetermine the -log A<sub>o</sub> values. Although some systematic differences were found between this analysis and Richter's values (such that using Richter's values would lead to under and overestimates of M<sub>L</sub> at distances less than 40 km and greater than 200 km, respectively), the accuracy of his values is remarkable in view of the small number of data used in their determination. Richter's corrections for the distance attenuation of the peak amplitudes on Wood-Anderson seismographs apply only to the southern California region, of course, and should not be used in other areas without first checking to make sure that they are applicable. Often in the past this has not been done, but recently a number of papers have been published determining the corrections for other areas. If there are significant differences in the attenuation within 100 km between regions, then the definition of the magnitude at 100 km could lead to difficulty in comparing the sizes of earthquakes in various parts of the world. To alleviate this, it is proposed that the scale be defined such that a magnitude 3 corresponds to 10 mm of motion at 17 km. This is consistent both with Richter's definition of M<sub>L</sub> at 100 km and with the newly determined distance corrections in the southern California region. </p><p>Aside from the obvious (and original) use as a means of cataloguing earthquakes according to size, ML has been used in predictions of ground shaking as a function of distance and magnitude; it has also been used in estimating energy and seismic moment. There is a good correlation of peak ground velocity and the peak motion on a Wood-Anderson instrument at the same location, as well as an observationally defined (and theoretically predicted) nonlinear relation between M<sub>L</sub> and seismic moment. </p><p>An important byproduct of the establishment of the M<sub>L</sub> scale is the continuous operation of the network of Wood-Anderson seismographs on which the scale is based. The network will consist of approximately 150 seismograph stations distributed across the contiguous 48 states and across Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Data transmission will be via two-way satellite telemetry from the network sites to a central recording facility at the NEIC in Golden, Colorado. The design goal for the network is the on-scale recording by at least five well-distributed stations of any seismic event of magnitude 2.5 or greater in all areas of the United States except possibly part of Alaska. All event data from the network will be distributed to the scientific community on compact disc with read-only memory Maps of latent heat flux density (λE) and net radiant flux density (R</span><sub>n</sub><span>) were produced using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data for three dates: 23 July 1985, 5 April 1986, and 24 June 1986. On each date, a Bowen-ratio apparatus, located in a vegetated field, was used to measure λE and R</span><sub>n</sub><span>&nbsp;at a point within the field. Estimates of λE and R</span><sub>n</sub><span>&nbsp;were also obtained using radiometers aboard an aircraft flown at 150 m above ground level. An areal, two-dimensional numerical solute transport model indicates that the movement of TCE due to advection, dispersion, and linear sorption is simulated over a 25-year historic period. The model is used in several ways: (1) to estimate the extent of the plume; (2) to confirm the likely sources of contamination as suggested by a soil organic vapor survey of the site; and (3) to make predictions about future movement of the plume. Despite the noisy and incomplete data set, the model reproduces the general trends in contamination at a number of observation wells. The analysis indicates that soil organic vapor monitoring is an effective tool for identifying contaminant source locations. Leaky sewer pipes and underground tanks are the indicated pathways for TCE to have entered the groundwater system. The data were analyzed by using a new data enhancement procedure—the construction of relative absorption band-depth (RBD) images. RBD images, like bandratio images, are designed to detect diagnostic mineral absorption features, while minimizing reflectance variations related to topographic slope and albedo differences. To produce an RBD image, several data channels near an absorption band shoulder are summed and then divided by the sum of several channels located near the band minimum. RBD images are both highly specific and sensitive to the presence of particular mineral absorption features. Further, the technique does not distort or subdue spectral features as sometimes occurs when using other data normalization methods. By using RBD images, a number of rock and soil units were distinguished in the Ruby Mountains including weathered quartz - feldspar pegmatites, marbles of several compositions, and soils developed over poorly exposed mica schists. The RBD technique is especially well suited for detecting weak near-infrared spectral features produced by soils, which may permit improved mapping of subtle lithologic and structural details in semiarid terrains. The chloride-balance method, as presented in this paper, equates chloride in recharge water and runoff to chloride deposited in mountainous recharge-source areas by precipitation and dry fallout. Given estimates of annual precipitation on these source areas and chloride concentrations of bulk precipitation and recharge water, the rate of recharge can be estimated providing that: (1) no other major sources of chloride exist; (2) direct runoff to discharge areas in the basin is small or can otherwise be taken in account in the balance; and (3) the recharge sources for the basin are correctly delineated. The estimates are sensitive to the estimated rate of input of chloride from the atmosphere; this is the greatest data need for future applications of the method. Preliminary applications of the method to sixteen basins in Nevada, including Las Vegas Valley, indicate that the method can be a useful tool for hydrologists and resource managers. Correlation coefficients between recharge efficiencies for the basins - estimated on the basis of recharge estimates that use the chloride-balance method and two other currently used techniques - range from 0.54 to 0.95, depending on assumptions about where the method may be Mean&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;was greatest (1.56 Pa) in a pebbly-sand deposit 11.6 m below the land surface and 12 m from the waste, and generally decreased with increased horizontal distance from the waste. Mean&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;was least (0.07 Pa) at depth of 1.8 m below land surface, regardless of distance from the waste.&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;at the land surface averaged 0.17 Pa. Depth versus&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;profiles suggest consumption of both waste-produced and atmospheric CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;in the upper unsaturated zone, presumably by methanotrophic microorganisms. Numerical simulations of methane movement support the consumption observation; inclusion of a term in the model for consumption of CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;in the upper 2 m of the unsaturated zone resulted in simulated&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;within 30% of mean&nbsp;</span><i>P</i><span>CH</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;at eleven of thirteen sampling locations. The main features of the SEI system were (1) a digital recorder with an instantaneous-floating-point-gain constant of 24 dB, (2) a 64-channel hydrophone streamer, 3,200 m long, and (3) a 21-airgun array that had a total volume of 2,000 in and a pressure of 2,000 psi. Sampling interval was array to the center of the farthest phone group was 3,338 m and to the nearest phone group, 188 m. Shot points were 5O m apart to obtain a 32-fold stack. Navigation was by an integrated satellite/Loran/doppler-sonar system.</p><p>The SEI data were processed by Geophysical Data Processing Center, Inc. of Houston, Texas. Processing procedures were standard with the following exceptions: (1) a deringing deconvolution that had a 128-ms operator length was done prior to stacking. (2) a time-variant predictive deconvolution that had a filter operator length of 100 ms and automatic picking of the second zero-crossing was applied after stacking to further suppress multiple energy. (3) Velocity analyses were performed every 3 km, using a technique that included the determination and consideration of both the amount and direction of apparent dip. (4) Automatic gain ranging using a 750-ms window was applied pre- and post-stack. ( 5) Lines affected by sea floor's angle of slope were deconvolved again before stacking and time-variant filter parameters were adjusted to follow the sea-floor geometry.</p><p>The data taken with the 3,200-m streamer and 2,000 in<sup>3</sup> airgun array, aboard M/V SEISMIC EXPLORER (Arabic numerals) are vastly superior to those obtained by R/V GYRE using a much smaller streamer and source (Roman numerals). The former consistently show coherent primary events from within the units underlying the Mesozoic section on the western Florida Shelf, while the latter tend to do so only in the inshore area where pre-Mesozoic basement occurs at depths of less than 2 km. The R/V GYRE data were open filed previously (Ball and others, 1987). A synthesis of both sets of data is included in Ball and others (1988).</p><p>Reflectors correlate to the full 8-s duration of recording time. A number of lines were restarted due to equipment failure; no areas were omitted, however, shotpoints overlap.
