They have learned that shaking near the source of earthquakes is far more severe than once thought and that soft ground shakes more strongly than hard rock.This knowledge has enabled engineers to improve design standards so that structures arebetter able to survive strong earthquakes. When the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake struck, 42 people tragically lost their lives in the collapse of a half-mile-long section of the Cypress structure, an elevated double-decker freeway in Oakland, California.Yet adjacent parts of this structure withstood the magnitude 6.9 temblor—why? The part that collapsed was built on man-made fill over soft mud, whereas adjacent sections stood on older, firmer sand and gravel deposits. Following the collapse, scientists set out instruments in the area to record the earthquake's many strong aftershocks. These instruments showed that the softer ground shook more forcefully than the firmer material-even twice as violently","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs17695","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with California Division of Mines and Geology, California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Many smaller agencies, Private building owners","usgsCitation":"Çelebi, M., Spudich, P.A., Page, R.A., and Stauffer, P.H., 1995, Saving lives through better design standards: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 176-95, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17695.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117155,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_176_95.bmp"},{"id":613,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/fs176-95/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":280375,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0176/pdf/fs176-95.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdba3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Çelebi, Mehmet 0000-0002-4769-7357 celebi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4769-7357","contributorId":3205,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Çelebi","given":"Mehmet","email":"celebi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":151016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spudich, Paul A. 0000-0002-9484-4997 spudich@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9484-4997","contributorId":2372,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spudich","given":"Paul","email":"spudich@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":151015,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Page, Robert A.","contributorId":17207,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Page","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Stauffer, Peter H. pstauffe@usgs.gov","contributorId":1219,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stauffer","given":"Peter","email":"pstauffe@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":151014,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The city of Chicago, Ill., and other lakefront towns have used Lake Michigan as a water supply. The goal of the program is to improve and protect the water quality of lakes, streams, wetlands, and ground water within selected priority watersheds by controlling sources of nonpoint pollution. For each selected watershed, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources drafts a management plan that guides the implementation of pollution-control strategies known as Best Management Practices (BMP's). This plan summarizes resource and land-use inventories, describes the results of pollution-source modeling, and suggests pollution reduction goals. The U.S. Geological Survey, through a cooperative effort with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, is monitoring water-quality improvements that result from the implementation of BMP's. The data collected are then compared to the watershed plans to assess progress and determine whether goals are being realized. This fact sheet describes the data-collection efforts, preliminary results, and planned data-analysis techniques of monitoring projects for pre-BMP conditions at two barnyards, one each on Otter Creek and Halfway Prairie Creek.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs22195","usgsCitation":"Stuntebeck, T.D., 1995, Evaluating barnyard Best Management Practices in Wisconsin using upstream-downstream monitoring: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 221-95, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs22195.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124854,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_221_95.bmp"},{"id":308686,"rank":101,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/fs221-95/pdf/fs22195.pdf"},{"id":12070,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/fs221-95/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Halfway Prairie Creek, Otter Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.84619140625,\n              42.48830197960227\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84619140625,\n              43.6599240747891\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.637939453125,\n              43.6599240747891\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.637939453125,\n              42.48830197960227\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84619140625,\n              42.48830197960227\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a03e4b07f02db5f840d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stuntebeck, Todd D. 0000-0002-8405-7295 tdstunte@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8405-7295","contributorId":902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stuntebeck","given":"Todd","email":"tdstunte@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Examples of nonpoint-source contaminants from agricultural activities are pesticides, which include fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides; sediment; nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus); and fecal bacteria. Of these contaminants, pesticides receive the most attention because of the potential toxicity to aquatic life and to humans. Most farmers use pesticides to increase crop yields and values. Herbicides prevent or inhibit the growth of weeds that compete for nutrients and moisture needed by the crops. Herbicides are applied before, during, or following planting. In addition to agricultural use, herbicides are used in urban areas, often in larger rates of application, for weed control such as among rights-of-way. Alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, and metolachlor, which are referred to as organonitrogen herbicides, were the four most commonly applied herbicides (1991) in the Central Nebraska Basins (CNB). These herbicides are used for corn, sorghum, and soybean production. Atrazine was the most extensively applied pesticide (1991) in central Nebraska. Insecticides are used to protect the crop seeds in storage prior to planting and also to protect the plants from destruction once the seeds have germinated. Like herbicides, insecticides are also used in urban areas to protect lawns, trees, and ornamentals.\r\n\r\nMany of the 46 pesticides shown in the table have either a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of Health Advisory Level (HAL) established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for public water supplies. The purposes of this Fact Sheet are to (1) to provide water-utility managers, water-resources planners and managers, and State regulators an improved understanding of the distributions of concentrations of pesticides in streams and their relation to respective drinking-water regulations or criteria, and (2) to describe concentrations of pesticides in streams draining a selected small agricultural basin and a large agricultural area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs23295","usgsCitation":"Stamer, J., and Wieczorek, M., 1995, Pesticides in Streams in Central Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 232-95, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs23295.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":13206,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ne.water.usgs.gov/Nawqa/pubs/abstracts/fs232-95.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":34184,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0232/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118427,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0232/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nebraska ","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {\n \"stroke\": \"#555555\",\n \"stroke-width\": 2,\n \"stroke-opacity\": 1,\n \"fill\": \"#555555\",\n \"fill-opacity\": 0.3\n },\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -101.75537109374999,\n 40.51379915504413\n ],\n [\n -95.99853515624999,\n 40.51379915504413\n ],\n [\n -95.99853515624999,\n 41.47566020027821\n ],\n [\n -101.75537109374999,\n 41.47566020027821\n ],\n [\n -101.75537109374999,\n 40.51379915504413\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649d10","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stamer, J. As early as the 1950's it was established that emissions of mercury to the environment could have serious effects on human health. These early studies demonstrated that fish and other wildlife from various ecosystems commonly attain mercury levels of toxicological concern when directly affected by mercury-containing emissions from human-related activities. Human health concerns arise when fish and wildlife from these ecosystems are consumed by humans. During the past decade, a new trend has emerged with regard to mercury pollution. Investigations initiated in the late 1980's in the northern-tier states of the U.S., Canada, and Nordic countries found that fish, mainly from nutrient-poor lakes and often in very remote areas, commonly have high levels of mercury. More recent fish sampling surveys in other regions of the U.S. have shown widespread mercury contamination in streams, wet-lands, reservoirs, and lakes. To date, 33 states have issued fish consumption advisories because of mercury contamination. These continental to global scale occurrences of mercury contamination cannot be linked to individual emissions of mercury, but instead are due to widespread air pollution. When scientists measure mercury levels in air and surface water, however, the observed levels are extraordinarily low. In fact, scientists have to take extreme precautions to avoid direct contact with water samples or sample containers, to avert sample contamination (Fig 3). Herein lies an apparent discrepancy: Why do fish from some remote areas have elevated mercury concentrations, when contamination levels in the environment are so low?
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs21695","usgsCitation":"Krabbenhoft, D.P., and Rickert, D.A., 1995, Mercury contamination of aquatic ecosystems: When scientists learned that acid rain could harm fish, fear of damage to our natural environment from acid rain concerned the American public. Research by USGS scientists and other groups began to show that the processes resulting in acid rain are very complex. Scientists were puzzled by the fact that in some cases it was difficult to demonstrate that the pollution from automobiles and factories was causing streams or lakes to become more acidic. Further experiments showed how the natural ability of many soils to neutralize acids would reduce the effects of acid rain in some locations--at least as long as the neutralizing ability lasted (Young, 1991). The USGS has played a key role in establishing and maintaining the only nationwide network of acid rain monitoring stations. This program is called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN). Each week, at approximately 220 NADP/NTN sites across the country, rain and snow samples are collected for analysis. NADP/NTN site in Montana. The USGS supports about 72 of these sites. The information gained from monitoring the chemistry of our nation's rain and snow is important for testing the results of pollution control laws on acid rain. Seasonal differences were addressed by conducting two surveys, the first during the winter low-flow period and the second during the late spring high-flow period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs23195","usgsCitation":"Shipp, A.A., 1995, Water-quality assessment in the Trinity River Basin, Texas: Nutrient concentrations in streams winter and spring 1994: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 231-95, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs23195.","productDescription":"2 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":49157,"text":"Rocky Mountain Regional Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34170,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0231/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"986.24 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":125338,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0231/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Trinity River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.72314453125,\n              33.60546961227188\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.118896484375,\n              33.52307880890422\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.503662109375,\n              33.52307880890422\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.96533203125,\n              33.394759218577995\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.45996093749999,\n              33.23868752757414\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.888671875,\n              32.657875736955305\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.372314453125,\n              32.30570601389429\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.910888671875,\n              31.70947636001935\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.58129882812499,\n              30.996445897426373\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.306640625,\n              30.32547125932808\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.306640625,\n              29.983486718474694\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.4384765625,\n              29.77391386999227\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.833984375,\n              29.66896252599253\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.20751953125,\n              29.563901551414443\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.701904296875,\n              29.592565403314087\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.888671875,\n              29.945415337104453\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.229248046875,\n              30.477082932837682\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.624755859375,\n              31.12819929911196\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.9873046875,\n              31.409912194070973\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.49267578125,\n              31.90554145590038\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.02001953125,\n              32.12910537866886\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.5693359375,\n              32.33355894864106\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.89892578125,\n              32.7872745269555\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.975830078125,\n              33.19273094190692\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.82202148437499,\n              33.54139466898275\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.72314453125,\n              33.60546961227188\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7220","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shipp, Allison A. 0000-0003-2927-8893 aashipp@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2927-8893","contributorId":338,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shipp","given":"Allison","email":"aashipp@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":49157,"text":"Rocky Mountain Regional Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Application of herbicides to corn and soybeans accounts for most of the use. The pesticides most frequently detected near the mouth of the White River during 1991-95 were the herbicides alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, and metolachlor. The highest concentrations of herbicides in the river were typically found during late spring runoff following application. Generally, concentrations of alachlor have been decreasing while concentrations of acetochlor have been increasing in response to changes in the use of these herbicides in the basin. The total amount of the commonly used herbicides transported by the river is about 1 percent or less of the amount applied to cropland. Insecticides commonly used in urban and agricultural areas also were found but in much lower concentrations than commonly used herbicides.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
