Geologic and topographic maps of several manganese properties in California were released today by the Geological Survey according to an announcement made by Survey Director W. E. Wrather to Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. The maps have been placed on open file at the offices of the Geological Survey in Washington, D. C., and at the offices of the Geologic Branch, California Division of Mines, Ferry Building, San Francisco, where they may be consulted by persons directly interested in the properties.

The recently increased demand for information regarding deposits of manganese silicates for new uses in connection with the war effort has indicated the desirability of releasing unpublished detailed maps of the California deposits, many of which carry manganese silicates. The maps were made as part of the strategic minerals investigations of the Geological Survey from 1941 to 1943.

The deposits covered by the maps are in the following counties of California: Amador, Calaveras, Eldorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Madera, Mariposa, Mendocino, Mono, Placer, Plumas, San Bernardino, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, San Joaquin, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Trinity, and Tuolumne.

A preliminary survey of the industrial quality of surface waters in Oklahoma was started in August, 1944, by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oklahoma Resources and Planning Board, with the Oklahoma A. & M. College, Engineering Experiment Station and Department of Chemistry.\nFrom September to December, 1944, three hundred and fifteen samples were obtained at eighty-four points where gages are maintained for measurement of discharge. Daily samples were collected at six stations, namely:

Illinois River near Gore, Oklahoma
\nCimarron River near Oilton, Oklahoma
\nCanadian River near Whitefield, Oklahoma
\nWashita River near Durwood, Oklahoma
\nRed River near Gainesville, Texas
\nRed River at Denison Dam, Texas

Sport samples were collected at the remainder of the stations. The analyses of the spot samples were made largely in a laboratory provided by the Oklahoma A. & M. College, under the supervision of Dr. O.M. Smith, Head, Department of Chemistry; Dr. S.R. Wood, Associate Professor of Chemistry; and W.W. Hastings, U.S. Geological Survey. The daily samples were analyzed in the water resources laboratory of the Geological Survey at Austin, Texas. These data have been summarized in a report to the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey, March 1, 1945.

The streams of Oklahoma are classified into two major drainage basins: the Arkansas River and the Red River and their tributaries. The attached analyses are arranged in geographical order for their respective drainage basins, with records listed in downstream order for stations on the main stem first, followed by the analyses for the tributaries. When available, the mean daily discharge is given for the analyses.
