Zircons from the metaluminous rocks are prismatic, with length-to-width ratios of about 2-4:1 and small pyramidal terminations. In contrast, zircons from three of the four peralkaline complexes either lack well developed prismatic faces (are pseudo-octahedral) or are anhedral. Some of the zircons from the peralkaline granites contain inherited radiogenic lead. This complicates interpretation of the isotopic data and. in many cases, may make the U-Pb method unsuitable for determining the age of a peralkaline granite. Zircons in the metaluminous granites do not contain inheritance and thus, best-fit chords calculated through the data have upper concordia intercepts that indicate the age of intrusion, and lower intercepts that indicate simple episodic lead loss. Abundant rainfall, a generally thin unsaturated zone, geologic media of inherently low permeability, and the operational practices employed have contributed to partial saturation of the buried waste, leaching of radionuclides, and transport of dissolved matter from the burial areas. Two primary methods of movement of wastes from these sites are transport in groundwater, and the overflow of fluid in trenches and subsequent flow across land surface. Whiteoak Creek and its tributaries receive all overland flow from trench spillage, surface runoff from each site, and discharge of groundwater from the regolith of each site. Potentiometric data, locally, indicate that this drainage system also receives groundwater discharges from the bedrock of burial ground 5. By projection of the bedrock flow patterns characteristic of this site to other areas of Melton Valley, it is inferred that discharges from the bedrock underlying burial grounds 4 and 6 also is to the Whiteoak Creek drainage system. The differences in potentiometric heads and a comparatively thin saturated zone in bedrock do not favor the development of deep flow through bedrock from one river system to another. In addition, guidance is given on the use of aspect-class maps and other resource data in making pre-maps. The value and use of tabular summaries are discussed. Examples of the use of DEM products by the authors and by selected field soil scientists are also given. Additional information on SLAP procedures may be obtained from USDA, Soil Conservation Service, Soil Survey Division, P.O. These increases in demand for irrigation water from the glacial aquifer system, and continued requests to the State for additional irrigation well permits, have created a need for a systematic water management program to avoid over-development of this system in the James River basin. An equally spaced grid containing 56 rows and 52 columns used to simulate the glacial aquifer system, was calibrated using water level data collected before significant groundwater development (before 1973). The aquifer was also simulated in 11 annual transient stress periods from 1973 through 1983 and in 12 monthly transient stress periods for 1976. The simulated pre-development potentiometric heads were compared to average water levels from 32 observation wells to check the accuracy of the simulate potentiometric surface. The average arithmetic difference between the simulated and observed water levels was 1.68 ft and the average absolute difference was 4.38 ft. The non-pumping steady-state simulated water budget indicates that recharge from precipitation accounts for 97.1% of the water entering the aquifer and evapotranspiration accounts for 98.2% of the water leaving the aquifer. The sensitivity analysis of the steady-state model indicates that the model is most sensitive to reductions in recharge and least to changes in hydraulic conductivity. The maximum annual recharge varied from 0.10 inch in 1976 to 8.14 inches in 1977. The potential annual evapotranspiration varied from 29.9 inches in 1982 to 48.9 inches in 1976. Withdrawals from the glacial aquifer system increased 2.6 times between 1975 and 1976. The average annual arithmetic difference between the simulated and observed water levels ranged from 3.88 ft in 1974 to 2.23 ft in 1982; the average absolute difference ranged from 4.70 ft in 1973 to 11.70 ft in 1982. In the 1976 monthly transient simulation, the maximum annual recharge rate 0.10 inch was distributed over the months of March, April, and September. The potential monthly evapotranspiration rate ranged from 12.50 inches in August to 0.00 inch during the winter when the ground was frozen. Sampling locations included 13 stream sites, two lakes that supply City of Greensboro drinking water, two City of Greensboro finished drinking-water filtration plants, and two municipal wastewater plants where effluents were sampled prior to outfall into the receiving streams. Water sampling consisted of six routine samplings during various stages of steady flow at all sites, and rainfall-event sampling during two storms at six sites. Bottom-sediment samples were collected at three sites during two routine samplings.\r\n\r\nSamples were analyzed for trace-element, major ion, and nutrient concentrations, as well as general water-quality indicators, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductivity. Concentrations of acid and base/neutral extractable, volatile organic compounds, and organochlorine and organophosphorus constituents were also determined. Chromatographs from organic analyses were submitted to computerized library searches, the results of which are included in this report. The plume of contaminated groundwater near Pensacola, FL, is in shallow, permeable, Miocene to Holocene quartz sand and flows southward toward Pensacola Bay. Clay-size fractions were separated from 41 cores, chiefly split-spoon samples at 13 drill sites. The most striking feature of the chemical analyses of the clay fractions from uncontaminated site 2 and contaminated sites 4,5,6, and 7 is the variability of iron oxide (species in some samples as Fe2O3); total iron oxide abundance is lowest (2.5%) in uncontaminated sample 2-40, but is &gt; 4.5% (4.5 to 8.5%) in the remaining assemblages. One feature suggesting interaction between the indigenous clays and the waste plume is the presence of nontronite-rich smectite. Nontronite commonly has been identified as the product of hydrothermal alteration and deep-sea weathering of submarine basalts; it is not a common constituent of Cenozoic Gulf Coast sediments. At the Pensacola site, relatively abundant nontronitic smectite is confined to contaminated sands or associated muds; it is least abundant or absent in sands and muds peripheral to the waste plume. The geochemistry of the waste plume, its substantial dissolved, (chiefly ferrous iron), mildly acidic (pH 5-6), and low redox composition, provides an environment similar to that previously determined for the low-temperature synthesis of nontronite. Data from clay-size fractions confirm conclusions that neoformed pyrite in some grain coatings occurs in an assemblage with excess iron over that required in the pyrite. Continuing studies to evaluate these tentative conclusions include: (1) chemical analysis of clay fractions from remaining sites to further examine the apparent relation between iron content and abundance of nontronitic smectite; (2) clay separation and analysis, and pore fluid extraction (squeezing or ultracentrifugation) and analysis from a continuous core through the mud lens to determine pore fluid composition (presence or absence of waste fluid), and character of associated clay minerals; and (3) clay separation and analysis in both permeable sands and the intervening mud lens that are clearly outside the limits of the waste plume to further document the effects of the plume. Average horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the stratified drift ranges from 20 to 170 ft/day, and groundwater flows through the aquifers at an average rate of 2 to 3 ft/day. Land use in the study areas is changing from primarily undeveloped or agricultural lands to expanding residential, commercial, and light-industrial uses. Water quality data for 1923-82, that include 127 partial chemical analyses of groundwater samples from 38 wells in the two aquifers, were augmented by sampling during 1985 from 21 new stainless-steel wells for selected major inorganic constituents, trace elements, and organic chemicals. Nonparametric statistical procedures were used to compare the water quality data from four land use areas, for the two sampling periods, and between the two aquifers. Human activities associated with agricultural, residential, and industrial/commercial land uses have affected the quality of water in the stratified-drift aquifers underlying these land use areas. Statistical comparisons of water quality data between land use areas show significant differences, with the apparent relations between land use and groundwater being: (1) Median concentrations of most groundwater constituents are smallest in undeveloped areas; (2) Groundwater in agricultural areas has the largest median sulfate and total ammonia plus organic nitrogen concentrations. Agricultural areas are also characterized by groundwater with significantly greater median specific conductance, noncarbonate hardness, carbon dioxide, and magnesium concentrations relative to undeveloped areas; (3) Median concentrations of most major inorganic constituents, excluding potassium, sulfate, and total ammonia plus organic nitrogen, are greater in groundwater in residential areas than in undeveloped and agricultural areas. (4) Groundwater in industrial/commercial areas has the greatest median specific conductance, pH, carbon dioxide, calcium, magnesium, chloride bicarbonate, dissolved solids, boron, and strontium concentrations.
