This report contains brief descriptions of known mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the Port Moller and Stepovak Bay quadrangles on the Alaska Peninsula. These quadrangles, and the adjoining Simeonof Island quadrangle to the south were the subject of an Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP) mapping and mineral resource assessment project. This compilation of descriptions was made from the published literature (Wilson and others, 1986) and unpublished reports and data of The Aleut Corporation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and the U.S. Geological Survey. The initial compilation was primarily based on data from Cobb (1972) and MacKevett and Holloway (1977), however information provided by The Aleut Corporation and data gathered during the Port Moller AMRAP project added most of the information in the descriptions and the database. Compilation of this database is an ongoing process and this is a progress report of work completed to date. The authors would appreciate any corrections or additional information that users may be able to contribute. To facilitate active use of the descriptions, where information is not available for a particular field in the database, it is left blank so that the use can write in data as they obtain it.

This report is one of a series of studies of western Utah (Anderson and Bucknam, 1979; Bucknam and Anderson, 1979b), eastern Nevada (Barnhard, 1985), and central Nevada (Wallace, 1979) that shows the distribution, relative age, and amount and extent of surface rupture on Quaternary fault scarps. Previous paleoseismicity studies in the Tooele 1°x2° quadrangle include reports by Gilbert (1928), Bucknam (1977), Anderson and Miller (1980), Bucknam and others (1980), and Everitt and Kaliser (1980). Geologic and geophysical data pertinent to paleoseismicity of the Tooele 1°x2° quadrangle can be found in reports by Mikulich and Smith (1974), Cook and others (1980), Smith and Bruhn (1984), and Arabasz and others (1987). The present study is a continuation of mapping fault scarps in 1°x2° quadrangles in the Basin and Range province; the purpose is to determine the youngest surface-faulting age and distribution of fault scarps for earthquake-hazards analysis.

\n

The accompanying map shows 10 areas containing late Quaternary fault scarps formed on unconsolidated sediments in the Tooele 1°x2° quadrangle, northwestern Utah. The faulted sediments include sandy, pebbly, to bouldery colluvium, alluvium, and lacustrine deposits. They are inferred to have been deposited in Quaternary time during the latest phase of basin-filling sedimentation.

\n

Because the map shows only scarps on unconsolidated sediments, it does not show all faults that could produce earthquakes. A comprehensive map of all Quaternary faults would also include those in bedrock and at the contact of bedrock and alluvium, as well as Quaternary faults that appear only as lineaments in surficial deposits.

\n

Initial study involved photointerpretation of high-quality 1:60,000-scale black and white aerial photographs of the map area; offsets as small as 1 m could be detected from these photos if the faults cut planar surfaces of considerable extent. A map of suspected fault scarps, identified from the photointerpretation, was compiled at a scale of 1:250,000 and served as a guide for subsequent field studies in conjunction with a similar map from Bucknam (1977). We have chosen not to connect discontinuous segments of aligned fault scarps unless there is compelling evidence of continuous surface rupture.

\n

Field studies consisted of (1) confirming scarps as fault related and deleting from the preliminary map those features that were not fault related or that had no surface offset (lineaments), (2) searching for stratigraphic indicators of amount and age of offset, and (3) measuring surface profiles according to procedures described in Bucknam and Anderson (1979a). We profiled selected fault scarps where they were sufficiently continuous and unmodified by fluvial deposition or erosion.

\n

In the early morning or late afternoon when the sun was at 1ow angles, additional field searches were made for scarps resulting from ground ruptures that had not been identified during the photo interpretation phase of the study. No additional scarps were found.

\n

Techniques that yield the relative age of fault scarps can be used as a guide to the frequency and location of relatively large earthquakes. For large regions, geologically determined rates of seismic activity in the Basin and Range province are generally in good agreement with rates determined from historic seismicity (Bucknam and Algermissen, 1984). Fault-scarp studies such as this have been used as a guide in locating boundaries of seismic source zones used in probabilistic earthquake hazard estimates of the Basin and Range province (Thenhaus and Wentworth, 1982; Bucknam and Thenhaus, 1983).

We will first discuss the geologic setting of the map area and attributes of fault-scarp morphology, and then discuss the individual fault zones.

Lake Austin and Town Lake are located on the Colorado River in Travis County, central Texas, and serve as a source of water for municipal and industrial water supplies, electrical-power generation, and recreation for more than 500,000 people in the Austin metropolitan area. Lake Austin, located immediately downstream of Lake Travis, extends for more than 20 miles into the western edge of the city of Austin. Town Lake extends through the downtown area of the city of Austin for nearly 6 miles where the Colorado River is impounded by Longhorn Dam.

\n

Many of the detrimental effects of impoundment of water in a lake or reservoir are related to thermal stratification, which generally does not occur in Lake Austin or in Town Lake. The largest detected difference in vertical temperature was 6.5 degrees Celsius in Lake Austin and 3.5 degrees Celsius in Town Lake. The small vertical temperature variations in both lakes can be attributed to shallow depths in the lakes and to the short retention times of water in the lakes during the summer months.

\n

Large vertical dissolved-oxygen gradients were not detected in Lake Austin and Town Lake. Average dissolved-oxygen concentrations for Lake Austin at site Ac, a deep site (about 50 feet) at the dam, differ by about 2.5 milligrams per liter from surface to bottom during the summer. At site Ac on Town Lake, average dissolved-oxygen concentrations differ by about 1 milligram per liter from surface to bottom. The largest areal variations in dissolved oxygen generally occur in Lake Austin during the summer. Water released to Lake Austin during the summer is from below the thermocline in Lake Travis, and consequently, dissolved-oxygen concentrations generally are small. For example, in August 1984, dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Lake Austin increased from 2.8 milligrams per liter in the headwaters to slightly greater than 7.0 milligrams per liter approximately 14 miles downstream. This increase in dissolved oxygen was caused by reaeration from the atmosphere and from photosynthetic production of oxygen by aquatic plants.

\n

Dissolved trace-element data collected from Lake Austin and Town Lake indicate that with the exception of iron, manganese, and mercury, none of the dissolved trace elements analyzed for exceeded either the primary maximum contaminant level or secondary maximum contaminant level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Average concentrations of dissolved iron and dissolved manganese in water collected near the bottom of Lake Austin did not exceed 40 and 50 micrograms per liter, respectively.

\n

Little seasonal or areal variation was noted in nitrogen concentrations in Lake Austin or Town Lake. Organic nitrogen is the predominant nitrogen species in both lakes. Stormwater runoff had little effect on nitrogen concentrations in Lake Austin. Nitrogen concentrations in Town Lake were slightly larger following periods of runoff. Total nitrogen concentrations in Town Lake following periods of runoff often exceed 1.0 milligram per liter.

\n

Total phosphorus concentrations are small in Lake Austin and Town Lake. About 95 percent of the total phosphorus concentrations measured in Lake Austin and about 81 percent of the total phosphorus concentrations measured in Town Lake were less than 0.03 milligram per liter. Total phosphorus concentrations are largest in Town Lake following periods of runoff.

\n

Dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 240 to 340 milligrams per liter in Lake Austin and from 170 to 360 milligrams per liter in Town Lake. The smallest concentrations of dissolved solids in Town Lake occurred following periods of runoff. During periods of no runoff, dissolved-solids concentrations in Town Lake ranged from 240 to 360 milligrams per liter, which was very similar to the range in Lake Austin.

\n

Densities of feca1-coliform bacteria in Lake Austin ranged from less than 1 to 600 colonies per 100 milliliters, and densities of fecal-streptococci bacteria ranged from less than 1 to 340 colonies per 100 milliliters. Densities of fecal-coliform bacteria in Town Lake ranged from 4 to 14,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, and densities of fecal-streptococci bacteria ranged from less than 1 to 15,000 colonies per 100 milliliters. The largest densities of both bacteria in Town Lake occurred following runoff.

\n

Little or no effect of stormwater runoff on temperature, dissolved oxygen, or trace elements was detected in either Lake Austin or Town Lake. Increased concentrations of total nitrogen and phosphorus were detected in Town Lake, but not in Lake Austin following runoff. A decrease in concentrations of dissolved solids and major ions occurred in Town Lake, but not in Lake Austin, following runoff. Densities of fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococci bacteria were larger in Lake Austin and Town Lake following runoff, but significantly larger increases were noted in Town Lake.

\n

Water-quality data collected from Lake Austin and Town Lake, following runoff, generally were not adequate to fully determine the effects of runoff on the lakes. Data collection should not to be limited to fixed-station sampling following runoff, and both lakes need to be sampled simultaneously as soon as possible following significant precipitation.

The intent of this publication is twofold: (1) to serve as a user guide for soil scientists and others interested in learning about the value and use of digital elevation model (DEM) data in making soil surveys and (2) to provide documentation of the Soil Landscape Analysis Project (SLAP).

This publication provides a step-by-step guide on how digital slope-class maps are adjusted to topographic maps and orthophotoquads to obtain accurate slope-class maps, and how these derivative maps can be used as a base for soil survey premaps. In addition, guidance is given on the use of aspect-class maps and other resource data in making pre-maps. The value and use of tabular summaries are discussed. Examples of the use of DEM products by the authors and by selected field soil scientists are also given. Additional information on SLAP procedures may be obtained from USDA, Soil Conservation Service, Soil Survey Division, P.O. Box 2890, Washington, D.C. 20013, and from references (Horvath and others, 1987; Horvath and others, 1983; Klingebiel and others, 1987; and Young, 1987) listed in this publication.

The slope and aspect products and the procedures for using these products have evolved during 5 years of cooperative research with the USDA, Soil Conservation Service and Forest Service, and the USDI, Bureau of Land Management.

This report contains discharge records for 29 gaging stations; stage only record for 3 gaging stations; water quality for 8 gaging stations; 5 partial-record stations; water temperature for 28 gaging stations; and water levels for 35 observation wells and water quality for 81 ground-water sites. Also included are 8 low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating Governments and Federal agencies in other Pacific areas.

The interpretations are based on correlations with mapped surface geology by R. E. Powell, reproduced here from Powell and others (1984), as a base for the aeromagnetic data.

The Eagle Mountains Wilderness Study Area consists of about 49,723 acres in the southeastern and east-central part of the Eagle Mountains, Riverside County, California, just north of Interstate 10 about 170 mi east-southeast of Los Angeles. The western boundary of the WSA abuts Joshua Tree National Monument, the northern boundary skirts the Eagle Mountains mining district, and parts of the southern and eastern boundaries follow the Colorado River aqueduct. Principal access to the interior of the WSA is provided by jeep trails in Big Wash and an unnamed, major north-draining wash in the western part of the study area.

In order to develop plans for the management of this natural resource, and to assess the effects of placer mining on aquatic systems, documentation of the physical characteristics of the streams in the area is needed. Channel morphology, streamflow and streambed composition data were collected at 14 stream reaches in the Kantishna Hills area in September 1982 and in June, July, August , and September of 1983 and 1984. The reaches selected include locations of historical and current mining activity and locations which are undisturbed. The data indicate only minor differences in the physical properties of the streams in mined and unmined drainage basins. The composition of streambeds below mined areas tended to consist of finer sized particles and exhibited less variation in mean particle size than streambed in unmined basins. This may be due in part to the natural sorting of material in stream channels because mined areas, and thus study reaches below them, tended to be located relatively farther downstream (nearer the stream mouth) than were study reaches in basins where no mining has occurred. Changes in the physical properties of the streams which could be directly attributed to mining activity were noted at only one location, Rainy Creek near Kantishna, where the stream had been diverted from its natural channel by the construction of settling ponds. Abundant rainfall, a generally thin unsaturated zone, geologic media of inherently low permeability, and the operational practices employed have contributed to partial saturation of the buried waste, leaching of radionuclides, and transport of dissolved matter from the burial areas. Two primary methods of movement of wastes from these sites are transport in groundwater, and the overflow of fluid in trenches and subsequent flow across land surface. Whiteoak Creek and its tributaries receive all overland flow from trench spillage, surface runoff from each site, and discharge of groundwater from the regolith of each site. Potentiometric data, locally, indicate that this drainage system also receives groundwater discharges from the bedrock of burial ground 5. By projection of the bedrock flow patterns characteristic of this site to other areas of Melton Valley, it is inferred that discharges from the bedrock underlying burial grounds 4 and 6 also is to the Whiteoak Creek drainage system. The differences in potentiometric heads and a comparatively thin saturated zone in bedrock do not favor the development of deep flow through bedrock from one river system to another. The geologic data have now been captured digitally and are presented here along with images of the printed map sheet and component parts as PDF files.\r\n\r\nThe Quaternary Geologic Map of the Mobile 4 degrees x 6 degrees Quadrangle was mapped as part of the Quaternary Geologic Atlas of the United States. The atlas was begun as an effort to depict the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and other materials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. These materials are at the surface of the Earth. They make up the ground on which we walk, the dirt in which we dig foundations, and the soil in which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in one way or another to these surface materials that are referred to collectively by many geologists as regolith, the mantle of fragmental and generally unconsolidated material that overlies the bedrock foundation of the continent. The maps were compiled at 1:1,000,000 scale. \r\n\r\nIn recent years, surficial deposits and materials have become the focus of much interest by scientists, environmentalists, governmental agencies, and the general public. They are the foundations of ecosystems, the materials that support plant growth and animal habitat, and the materials through which travels much of the water required for our agriculture, our industry, and our general well being. They also are materials that easily can become contaminated by pesticides, fertilizers, and toxic wastes. Some of the data gathered in that program are presented in this report. Data are presented for two key sites in the Toutle River basin: North Fork Toutle River near Kid Valley, and Toutle River at Tower Road, near Silver Lake. The types of data presented are appropriate for use with sediment transport formulas; however, the data are also intended for use in a wide variety of additional applications. The data presented in this report are unique because they delineate flow conditions possessing great potential fo sediment transport. The data define unusually high suspended-sediment concentration. Data defining hydraulic, peak discharge, suspended-sediment, and bed-material characteristics are presented. The aquifer is from 28 to 35 ft thick with a thick marine clay at its base. Water in the aquifer generally is low in chloride content except near the coast. Excessively high iron concentrations in groundwater were found locally. A two-dimensional finite-difference groundwater flow model of the water table aquifer on Dauphin Island was used in the steady-state mode to evaluate the flow system under steady-state conditions. Model input data were obtained primarily from 40 test wells, 2 aquifer tests, continuous recording of groundwater levels, and rainfall. The model was calibrated to the low water-table conditions of July 1985 and high water table conditions of April 1985. The model was also used to simulate pumpage from the aquifer under transient conditions with no rainfall. Patterns of computed head changes compared favorably to the natural recession of water levels for the periods of April to May 1985 and May to June 1985. Simulation of groundwater withdrawals in the transient model showed the feasibility of producing 0.6 million gallons/day from eight wells that tap the water table aquifer without inducing lateral seawater encroachment. Most of these stations were operated for 8 years. From 1962 to 1965, the Tennessee Valley Authority again collected daily sediment record at 10 of the original 49 stations. In addition to the data sets collected on the major rivers, the Tennessee Valley Authority has conducted several intensive studies of small watersheds throughout the Tennessee River basin. In the Cumberland River basin, daily sediment records have been collected primarily by the Survey. Daily stations have been operated for various periods on 17 basins ranging in size from 0.67 to 1,977 sq mi, with the earliest data of daily record being October 1953. All of these daily stations are located in the upper Cumberland River basin upstream of any major impoundments. Periodic sediment data have been collected by the Survey at 194 stations in the Tennessee River basin and at 106 stations in the Cumberland River basin, however; the number of samples/station is quite low. 86% of the periodic stations in the Tennessee River basin and 91% of the periodic stations in the Cumberland River basin have 30 samples or less.
