The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, about 282.66 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in Evangeline Parish, including about 122.05&nbsp;Mgal/d from groundwater sources and 160.61 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for agricultural use, composed of aquaculture, general irrigation, livestock, and rice irrigation, accounted for 45 percent (126.86 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Withdrawals for power-generation use accounted for about 52 percent (146.33 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other categories of use included public supply, industry, and rural domestic. International trade has</span><span>&nbsp;</span><span>created opportunities to move wood products and nursery stock</span><span>&nbsp;</span><span>worldwide, which has increased the risk of insect introduction to&nbsp;regions or countries where they are not native.&nbsp;One group of researchers, the High-impact Insect Invasions&nbsp;Working Group (HIIWG), has developed a predictive model that can be used to estimate the likelihood that a newly arriving nonnative insect may significantly impact North American conifers. The HIIWG examined several traits and factors associated with nonnative insects feeding on conifers (a conifer specialist) already established in&nbsp;North America.&nbsp;Using these data,&nbsp;the HIIWG identified which combination of factors best predicted the risk that a conifer specialist would have a high impact. The researchers then developed a statistical model to predict the probability that a conifer specialist yet to arrive in North America would cause significant damage to conifers if the insect&nbsp;became established.&nbsp;Using three factors, the model calculates the odds of any particular conifer specialist having a high impact on a North American conifer in a range between 1 in 6.5 to 1 in 2,858.&nbsp;This model&nbsp;is a valuable tool&nbsp;to help identify invading insects with the potential to be&nbsp;the most damaging if the insect becomes established in North&nbsp;America. These include a&nbsp;network of 217 real-time streamgages and 12 real-time reservoir-level monitoring stations in water year 2019.&nbsp;The data and associated analyses from the streamgages and monitoring stations provide a unique overview of hydrologic conditions and help improve the understanding of Kansas’ water resources. Annual assessments of hydrologic conditions are made by comparing statistical analyses of current and past water year data for the period of record.&nbsp;Long-term monitoring of hydrologic conditions in Kansas provides imperative information for many uses including managing water resources and protecting human life and property and promoting agricultural practices, industrial activities, operation Open access helps to leverage the public investment by making the acquired data and published information products—collectively referred to as “data assets”—easier to locate, reproduce, and reuse. Open access also provides transparency to the processes used to acquire and analyze the data, thereby helping to ensure the scientific integrity of USGS data and products.</p><p>The data assets produced by USGS programs, science centers, and projects are preserved digitally in various USGS and non-USGS repositories. To capitalize on the investment expended for data collection, analysis, and interpretation, these systems must remain useful and meaningful. For USGS repositories, the Bureau FSP Advisory Committee has implemented an evaluation process to ensure that the systems being used to preserve these data assets are trustworthy, reliable, and secure and thus provide for data longevity, integrity, and security. Nearby residents assumed that the mountain was solid and enduring. That perception changed during the early spring of 1980. Then, on May 18, 1980, following 2 months of earthquakes and small explosions, the volcano’s over-steepened north flank collapsed in a colossal landslide and triggered a near-horizontal blast, followed by a powerful vertical eruption. The high-speed, rock-filled, and gas-charged blast quickly evolved into a gravitationally driven pyroclastic flow, which leveled millions of trees, stripped them of their branches and bark, and scoured soil&nbsp;from bedrock. The vertical eruption that followed fed a towering plume of ash for more than 9 hours. Winds carried the ash from the volcano and deposited it hundreds of miles away. Lahars (volcanic mudflows) buried river valleys. These catastrophic events caused the worst volcanic disaster in the recorded history of the conterminous United States. The events violently transformed Mount St. Helens and left a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of people living in the Pacific Northwest and Water-quality data used in the analyses were collected between water years 1992 and 2017. Annual mean-daily concentrations and fluxes of total suspended solids, total phosphorus as phosphorus, nitrate plus nitrite as nitrogen, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen as nitrogen were estimated for U.S.&nbsp;Geological Survey streamgage locations in Indiana on the Upper White River at Muncie, near Nora, and near Centerton. In addition, flow-normalized annual mean-daily concentrations and fluxes of total suspended solids, total phosphorus, nitrate plus nitrite, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen were estimated and used to assess changes in these constituents between water years 1997 and 2017. The San Francisco Bay area is home to millions of people, and the Bay teems with plants and both resident and migratory wildlife, and fish. Freshwater mixes with salt water in the Bay and is subject to riverine influences (floods, droughts, managed reservoir releases, and freshwater diversions) and marine influences (tides, waves, and effects of salt water). They are designed to address specific water-resource threats such as water-related human health issues including harmful algal blooms, floods, droughts, and hazardous substance spills. In addition, super gages improve our understanding of the effects land-use practices have on critical water resources. Super gage data allow the development of surrogates, a continuous in-stream sensor measurement used to estimate something of greater interest to environmental managers, to be modeled and reported in near real-time concentrations and loads. The USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) established <i>Nature's Notebook</i> in 2009 to create a standard approach for collecting phenology data on plants and animals across the country. Currently, about half of the data are submitted by independent backyard observers at individual sites and half are submitted by groups of participants as part of a Local Phenology Program. With support from the U.S. Geological Survey, the USA-NPN collects, organizes, and shares data on phenology. Its volcanoes are legendary throughout the world, with the notorious 19th-century eruptions at Mount Tambora (1815) and Krakatau (1883), and the eruption that created the giant Toba Caldera in Sumatra (75,000 years ago)—the Earth’s largest volcanic eruption in the past 100,000 years. Just in the past 20 years, more than 36 volcanoes have erupted, some multiple times, threatening millions of people. The Government of Indonesia responds to this daunting volcanic threat from Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geologic Hazards Mitigation (CVGHM) offices in Bandung. From there, dozens of staff members coordinate operations at 77 small observatories spread out across the 5,000-kilometer-long archipelago that is Indonesia. For more than 50 years, the United States has worked in partnership with the Government of Indonesia to reduce the risk of volcanic eruptions and to save lives. Today, the two governments cooperate through an agreement between CVGHM and the U.S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP). Each year CVGHM and VDAP representatives convene to discuss priorities for the upcoming 12 months. The park, which covers 6 million acres, is a major draw for tourism and recreation, making it an important economic engine for central Alaska. However, the geologic forces that created the beautiful, steep landscape of DENA also make it prone to geologic hazards (geohazards) like landslides, debris flows, and earthquakes. DENA has only one major road, called the Park Road, that serves nearly all of its infrastructure. The success of DENA as a visitor destination, an economic engine, and a safe environment for visitors, residents, and staff relies on the resilience of this road, making it a major transportation lifeline for the region.</p><p>Since 2017, the National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program have partnered to produce a new high-resolution geologic map of the Park Road corridor to identify and address ongoing geohazards affecting DENA infrastructure. In the area of Polychrome Overlook, this map is being used to guide a new route for the Park Road around an area of landslide-prone slopes, where ongoing slumping is costing National Park Service millions of dollars in annual road maintenance costs. Beyond this area, the map serves as a park resource to assess geohazard risk in future infrastructure and management decisions.
