These data include summary logs of 64 test holes drilled in or adjacent to the study area. Water level data for 240 wells are included. These wells were measured in spring and fall of 1982 and spring of 1983. Water quality samples were collected from 62 irrigation wells. Water quality data include analyses for 18 routine constituents on samples from all wells and analyses for 8 trace constituents on samples from 25 wells. Rainfall data were collected at 30 sites by local observers from April 1982 to October 1983. Surface water data for 103 stream sites in the study area are included. Water discharge was measured at these sites as part of seepage surveys conducted from 1978 to 1982 to determine where and how much streams were gaining or losing water. These programs are described for public water supply; supplies for domestic, irrigation, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and mining uses; and supplies for powerplants. Frequency of collection, trigger levels, storage methods, and legislative framework are described. A regional water use data base was designed to store withdrawal, diversion, and consumptive use data on a drainage basin basis. The data base will be used to decide the advisability of proposed water diversion and consumptive use projects as part of a water management strategy. Data base formats, requirements, and methods of data transmittal from each area are described. Methods for acquiring missing data are suggested. Baseline values for 52 properties in native soils, 15 properties in big sagebrush, and 13 properties in western wheatgrass were established. Our Study revealed statistically significant regional variations of the following properties across the basin: in soil&-aluminum, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, sodium, nickel, phosphorus, lead, scandium, titanium, vanadium, zinc, organic and total carbon, pH, clay, dolomite, sodium feldspar, and DTPA-extractable calcium, cadmium, iron, potassium, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, yttrium, and zinc; in big sagebrush-barium, calcium, copper, magnesium, molybdenum, sodium, strontium, zinc, and ash; and in western wheatgrass-boron, barium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, strontium, zinc, and ash. These variations show up as north-south trends across the basin, or they reflect differences in elevation, hydrology, and soil parent material. Baseline values for properties that do not have statistically significant regional variations can be represented by geometric means and deviations calculated from all values within the basin. \r\n\r\nChemical and mineralogical analyses of soil and chemical analyses of western wheatgrass samples from Colorado State University's experimental revegetation plot at Anvil Points provide data useful in assessing potential effects on soil and plant properties when largescale revegetation operations begin. The concentrations of certain properties are related to the presence of topsoil over spent shale in the lysimeters. In soils, calcium, fluorine, lithium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, strontium, carbonate and total carbon, and DTPA-extractable boron, copper, iron, magnesium, and nickel have lower concentrations in topsoil than in the spent oil shale; whereas, silicon, titanium, ytterbium, clay, quartz, and DTPA-extractable potassium have greater concentrations in the topsoil than in the spent oil shale. In western wheatgrass, molybdenum has a lower concentration in grasses growing on the topsoil than in grasses on the spent oil shale; whereas, barium, calcium, manganese, strontium, zinc, and ash have greater concentrations in grasses growing on the topsoil than on the spent oil shale. When compared to baseline values, soils in the revegetation plot are significantly higher in concentrations of lead, zinc, organic and total carbon, and DTP A-extractable cadmium, iron, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, and zinc. Whereas, western wheatgrass grown within the revegetation plot has concentrations which fall within the baseline values established in the regional study. \r\n\r\nThe equations used in predicting concentrations of elements in plants from native and altered sites are cumbersome because of the large number of variables required to adequately predict expected concentrations and are of limited use because many explained only a small proportion of the total variation.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1134E","usgsCitation":"Tuttle, M.L., Severson, R.C., Dean, W., and Klusman, R., 1986, Geochemical variability of soils and biogeochemical variability of plants in the Piceance Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1134, p. They control the rate at which precipitation infiltrates or is transmitted through the soil, and thus they have a significant role in determining the rates both of ground-water recharge and surface runoff. In studies of ground-water hydrology, it commonly is useful to differentiate soils areally according to their physical characteristics and to assign values indicating the hydrologic responses of soils in the different areas.

In 1980 the U.S. Geologic Surey began a study termed the “Central Midwest Region Aquifer System Analysis,” Jorgensen and Signor, 1981). Groundwater withdrawals during 1980 (latest year for which data are available) in Tom Green County totaled about 15,300 acre-feet, all derived from shallow aquifers. Shallow aquifers in this report refer to the ground-water system generally less than 400 feet deep that contains water with less than a 10,000 milligrams per liter concentration of dissolved solids; aquifers comprising this system include: The Leona, Comanche Peak, Trinity, Blaine, San Angelo, Choza, Bullwagon, Vale, Standpipe, and Arroyo aquifers.
\n
The current (1983) water levels in shallow aquifers in Tom Green County are relatively unchanged from those levels listed in previous reports. In most wells, the change in water level is less than 10 feet, and only a few isolated wells or areas have changes of more than 20 feet. Based on long-term hydrographs of selected wells and precipitation, water levels are directly related to precipitation and associated pumpage for irrigation. Current (1983) water levels probably are higher than normal due to the above-normal precipitation during 1980-81.
\n
Ground water in Tom Green County commonly is very hard (greater than 180 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate), and chemical types vary in the aquifers and in different parts of the county. The concentrations of dissolved solids range from 200 to 3,000 milligrams per liter, the dissolved-chloride concentrations range from about 40 to 1,000 milligrams per liter, and the dissolved-sulfate concentrations normally range from about 25 to 600 milligrams per liter. The dissolved-nitrate concentrations in samples from eight wells ranged from 2 to 37 milligrams per liter. Five of these samples exceeded the maximum contaminant level of 10 milligrams per liter set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Of the eight water samples analyzed for minor elements, two exceeded the maximum contaminant level for selenium, and one exceeded the maximum contaminant level for manganese. Samples from three wells were analyzed for selected pesticides; no pesticides were detected.
\n
Two groups of ground-water samples were tested for bacteria in April and August 1983. The first group consisted of samples from 25 wells; no samples contained fecal-coliform bacteria, but 15 samples contained fecal-streptococci bacteria. The second group consisted of samples from 29 wells and 1 spring; twelve of these samples contained fecal-coliform bacteria and all 30 contained fecal-streptococci bacteria. Water samples from seven wells were common to both groups, and the samples tested in August contained more bacteria. Counts of fecal-coliform bacteria ranged from 0 to 26 colonies per 100 milliliters with most less than 5 colonies per 100 milliliters. Counts of fecal-streptococci bacteria ranged from 0 to 400 colonies per 100 milliliters with most less than 20 colonies per 100 milliliters. The presence of fecal-coliform and fecalstreptococci bacteria in water is only an indicator that pollution from septic systems may be present and is not a positive check for fecal pollution. Generally, the aquifers are not contaminated by septic-system effluent, however, some individual wells or localized areas could be contaminated by nearby septic systems.
\n
Using dissolved-solids concentrations as an indicator, historical and current (1983) water-quality records were compared to determine if any changes in water quality had occurred. The quality of water from Cretaceous rocks underlying the Edwards Pleateau has not changed significantly; this water is the least mineralized ground water in the county. The quality of water from the Arroyo and Bullwagon aquifers in the eastern most part of the county also has not changed significantly; dissolved-solids concentrations range from 1,500 to 2,000 milligrams per liter. In the remainder of the county, dissolved-solids concentrations have increased from 10 to 500 milligrams per liter in ground water along the river valleys and in the Li pan Flat area and increases of 500 to 1,100 milligrams per liter have occurred in ground water southeast of San Angelo, west of Twin Buttes Reservoir, and about 10 miles east of San Angelo. Locally, dissolved-solids concentrations have increased by as much as 4,530 milligrams per liter in water from individual wells.
\n
Pollution from oil-field activities may affect the quality of water in some isolated wells and in some areas in the county. No historical records are available for determining any changes in pesticides, minor elements, or bacteria.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri864177","usgsCitation":"Lee, J., 1986, Shallow ground-water conditions, Tom Green County, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4177, vi, 88 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864177.","productDescription":"vi, 88 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":57112,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4177/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159373,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4177/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","county":"Tom Green County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -100.78857421875,\n              31.1740348492758\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.78857421875,\n              31.680264464234185\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.08682250976562,\n              31.680264464234185\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.08682250976562,\n              31.1740348492758\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.78857421875,\n              31.1740348492758\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f4216","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, J.N.","contributorId":23987,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"J.N.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199547,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The scarcity of current-meter measurements, coupled with backwater conditions, make definition of a single stage-discharge relation impossible without considerable error. However, as a useful alternative, limit curves were developed in 1983 that defined the limits of possible stage-discharge relations at the dam tailwater section. Since the 1983 report, 37 discharge values computed through the dam for the flood of December 1983 were used to verify or update the lower end of the limit curves. Data obtained from a current-meter measurement of the February 1961 flood (furnished by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) were used to update the upper end of the curves. The recharge facility contains 11 recharge basins and 5 injection wells and is designed to accept 4 million gallons of reclaimed water per day. Of the 11 basins, 7 are recently constructed and will accept 0.5 million gallons per day each. An observation manhole (12-foot inside diameter and extending 16 feet below the basin floor) was installed in each of two basins to enable monitoring and sampling of percolating reclaimed water in the unsaturated zone with instruments such as tensiometers, gravity lysimeters, thermocouples, and soil-gas samplers. Five shallow (100-feet deep) injection wells will each return 0.5 million gallons per day to the groundwater reservoir. Three types of injection-well design are being tested; the differences are in the type of gravel pack around the well screen. When clogging at the well screen occurs, redevelopment should restore the injection capability. Flow to the basins and wells is regulated by automatic flow controllers in which a desired flow rate is maintained by electronic sensors. Basins can also operate in a constant-head mode in which a specified head is maintained in the basin automatically. An observation-well network consisting of 2-inch- and 6-inch-diameter wells was installed within a 1-square-mile area at the recharge facility to monitor aquifer response and recharge. During 48 days of operation within a 17-week period (October 1982 through January 1983), 88.5 million gallons of reclaimed water was applied to the shallow water table aquifer through the recharge basins. A 4.29-foot-high groundwater mound developed during a 14-day test; some water level increase associated with the mound was detected 1,000 ft from the basins. Preliminary water quality data from wells affected by reclaimed water show evidence that mechanisms of mixing, dilution, and dispersion are affecting chemical concentrations of certain constituents, such as nitrogen and trichloroethane, in the shallow aquifer beneath the recharge area.
