The sulfur content may be expressed in terms of total sulfur in the coal, pounds of sulfur per million Btu, or sulfur remaining after reduction by coal preparation. In addition, sulfur content may be applied to the demonstrated reserve base or to coal resource estimates. Unfortunately, current data bases do not allow for an integrated assessment at the national level. Although classification of coal resources and reserves according to sulfur content is arbitrary, preferential production of low-sulfur reserves will positively skew the total sulfur of the remaining coal resource.","largerWorkTitle":"Preprint - Society of Mining Engineers of AIME","conferenceTitle":"Preprints for Presentation at the SME Annual Meeting.","conferenceLocation":"New Orleans, LA, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Soc of Mining Engineers of AIME","publisherLocation":"Littleton, CO, USA","usgsCitation":"Cecil, C.B., and Dulong, F., 1986, SULFUR CONTENT OF THE COAL RESOURCES OF THE UNITED STATES: CURRENT STATUS., in Preprint - Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, New Orleans, LA, USA.","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":226031,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505aafa5e4b0c8380cd876ed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cecil, C. Mean values do not exceed 20 ppb for any rock unit and the tenth percentile rarely exceeds 200 ppb. The concentration of Pd is greater than Pt for most rock groups; both of these elements have higher concentrations than Rh.A large part of the variability in the data appears to be related to rock types containing different proportions of sulfide. It is also notable that sulfur does not correlate with the platinum-group element concentrations for many lithologies, and when it does, it commonly is not a useful predictor of platinum-group element content. Further, calculated values of R, the mass ratio of silicate liquid which has equilibrated with sulfide liquid, are low (1 to 320). Analysis of this information suggests that the immiscible sulfide liquids, from which the sulfides formed, did not completely equilibrate with the silicate liquids with respect to their platinum-group element contents and that the silicate liquids were characterized by different concentrations and ratios of platinum-group elements.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.81.5.1169","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Zientek, M.L., Foose, M.P., and Leung, M., 1986, Palladium, platinum, and rhodium contents of rocks near the lower margin of the Stillwater complex, Montana: Economic Geology, v. 81, no. 5, p. 1169-1178, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.81.5.1169.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1169","endPage":"1178","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225643,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"81","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1986-08-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a747ce4b0c8380cd77683","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zientek, M. S. Geological Survey (USGS). These reports are based on data collected in Tampa and Tallahassee, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; and several cities in Alabama and Tennessee. Each report contains regression equations useful for estimating flood peaks for selected recurrence intervals at ungauged urban sites. A nationwide study of urban flood characteristics by the USGS published in 1983 contains equations for estimating urban peak discharges for ungauged sites. At the time that the nationwide study was conducted, data from only 35 sites in the southeastern United States were available. The five new reports contain data for 88 additional sites. These new data show that the seven-parameter estimating equations developed in the nationwide study are unbiased and have prediction errors less than those described in the nationwide report.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transportation Research Record","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03611981","usgsCitation":"Sauer, V.B., 1986, NEW STUDIES OF URBAN FLOOD FREQUENCY IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES.: Transportation Research Record, p. 10-15.","startPage":"10","endPage":"15","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225515,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6146e4b0c8380cd718b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sauer, Vernon B.","contributorId":92645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sauer","given":"Vernon","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":368533,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

There also should be a primary user with a clearly understood mission. The geologic phenomenon addressed by the database must be sufficiently understood, and adequate appropriate data must be available to construct a useful database. The database manager, in concert with the primary user, must ensure that data of adequate quality are available in the database, as well as prepare for mechanisms of releasing the data when the database is terminated. The primary user needs to be held accountable along with the database manager to ensure that a useful database will be created. Quality of data and maintenance of database relevancy to the user's mission are important issues during the database's lifetime. Products prepared at termination may be used more than the operational database and thus are of critical importance. These concepts are based, in part, on both the shortcomings and successes of GEOTHERM, a comprehensive system of databases and software used to store, locate, and evaluate the geology, geochemistry, and hydrology of geothermal systems. ?? 1986.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Computers and Geosciences","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/0098-3004(86)90006-3","issn":"00983004","usgsCitation":"Bliss, J.D., 1986, Management of the life and death of an earth-science database: some examples from geotherm: Computers & Geosciences, v. 12, no. 2, p. 199-205, https://doi.org/10.1016/0098-3004(86)90006-3.","startPage":"199","endPage":"205","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":266183,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0098-3004(86)90006-3"},{"id":225384,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"12","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a4c78e4b0c8380cd69cab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bliss, J. Land use of the homogeneously developed basins are residential (single family), highway, commercial, and apartment (multifamily).\r\n\r\nA computational procedure was used to calculate, for all storms that had water-quality data, the percentage of constituent load entrainment in specified depths of runoff. The plot of percentage of constituent load entrained as a function of runoff is termed the percentage-entrainment curve.\r\n\r\nPercentage-entrainment curves were developed for three different source areas of basin runoff: (1) the hydraulically effective impervious area, (2) the contributing area, and (3) the drainage area. With basin runoff expressed in inches over the contributing area, the depth of runoff required to remove 90 percent of the constituent load ranged from about 0.4 inch to about 1.4 inches; and to remove 80 percent, from about 0.3 to 0.9 inch.\r\n\r\nAnalysis of variance, using depth of runoff from the contributing area as the response variable, showed that the factor 'basin' is statistically significant, but that the factor 'constituent' is not statistically significant in the forming of the percentage-entrainment curve. Evidently the sewerage design, whether elongated or concise in plan dictates the shape of the percentage-entrainment curve.\r\n\r\nThe percentage-entrainment curves for all constituents were averaged for each basin and plotted against basin runoff for three source areas of runoff-the hydraulically effective impervious area, the contributing area, and the drainage area. The relative positions of the three curves are directly related to the relative sizes of the three source areas considered.\r\n\r\nOne general percentage-entrainment curve based on runoff from the contributing area was formed by averaging across both constituents and basins. Its coordinates are: 0.25 inch of runoff for 50-percent entrainment, 0.65 inch of runoff for 80-percent entrainment, and 0.95 inch of runoff for 90-percent entrainment. The general percentage-entrainment curve based on runoff from the hydraulically effective impervious area has runoff values of 0.35, 0.95, 1.6 inches, respectively.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri844329","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Florida Department of Transportation","usgsCitation":"Miller, R.A., 1985, Percentage entrainment of constituent loads in urban runoff, south Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4329, vi, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844329.","productDescription":"vi, 44 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":57550,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4329/84-4329.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.24 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"WRI 84-4329"},{"id":124610,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4329/coverthb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.7220458984375,\n 25.16517336866393\n ],\n [\n -79.8431396484375,\n 25.16517336866393\n ],\n [\n -79.8431396484375,\n 26.701452590314368\n ],\n [\n -80.7220458984375,\n 26.701452590314368\n ],\n [\n -80.7220458984375,\n 25.16517336866393\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6de4b07f02db63ed14","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, R. However, because of problems associated with remoteness and poor weather, little detailed mineral exploration work has been carried on there. This study focuses on using Landsat multispectral scanner data for the Port Moller, Stepovak Bay, and Simeon of Island Quadrangles to detect surface alteration, probably limonitic (iron oxide staining) and(or) argillic (secondary clay minerals) in character, that could be indicative of mineral deposits. The techniques used here are useful for mapping deposits that have exposed surface alteration of at least an hectare, the approximate spatial resolution of the Landsat data. Virtually cloud-free Landsat coverage was used, but to be detected, the alteration area must also be unobscured by vegetation. Not all mineral deposits will be associated with surface alteration, and not all areas of surface alteration will have valuable mineral deposits.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The United States Geological Survey in Alaska: Accomplishments during 1983 (Circular 945)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Alexandria, VA","doi":"10.3133/70180229","usgsCitation":"York, J., Wilson, F.H., and Gamble, B.M., 1985, Digital image processing techniques for detecting surface alteration - An application on the Alaska Peninsula: A section in The United States Geological Survey in Alaska: Accomplishments during 1983: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 945, 3 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70180229.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"56","endPage":"58","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":334008,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333994,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1985/0945/report.pdf#page=68","text":"Start page in larger work"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Alaska Peninsula","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5889c7c7e4b0ba3b075e064c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"York, James","contributorId":69604,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"York","given":"James","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":660825,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wilson, Frederic H. 0000-0003-1761-6437 fwilson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1761-6437","contributorId":67174,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Frederic","email":"fwilson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":660826,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gamble, Bruce M. bgamble@usgs.gov","contributorId":560,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gamble","given":"Bruce","email":"bgamble@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":660827,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The best exposure of this zone is located on the east shore of Humpback Bay (figs. 42, 43; also Burk, 1965, pl. 8, fig. 4); other exposures are located on the east side of Ivanof Bay, the north and south sides of Lefthand Bay, and in other coastal localities in the area. In some places, such as on the Kupreanof Peninsula, it is not recognized. This zone may extend discontinuously for 110-160 km along the coast; the width of the zone varies from 0.5 to 1 km. Reports in this series, published cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources, provide data to enable interested parties to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.

This report, like the others in the series, contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals from wells, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing ground-water level contours are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.

This report includes individual discussions of selected major areas of ground-water development in the State for the calendar year 1984. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described from the spring of 1984 to the spring of 1985. Data were collected on clutch sizes, nest spacing, and nesting success. The principal null hypothesis tested was that no difference in reproductive success exists between beach and marsh habitats. Nests were monitored from egg-laying in mid-May until mid-July when young fledged. Clutch sizes varied among colonies and across years but no systematic effect of year, habitat, or colony size on mean clutch size per colony was detected. Analyses of nest productivity (estimated using both the Mayfield method and using a colony average) failed to reveal significant effects of habitat or colony size but showed a stronger year effect. Storm tide flooding and egg chick disappearance (presumably predation by Herring Gulls Larus argentatus and Laughing Gulls L. atricilla nesting nearby) accounted for most nest failures. Losses due to both these mortality factors were unpredictable from year to year. Nest spacing in salt marsh colonies was much closer than it was on barrier beaches. In mixed-species colonies with Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger), distances between tern and skimmer nests were also much smaller in marsh colonies than they were on beaches. The limited amount of wrack (windrows of dead, matted vegetation) preferred by marsh-nesting terns probably explains these spacing differences. Several lines of evidence suggest that terns prefer beaches to marshes for nesting, however, the uncertainty of predation and flooding may often obscure any intrinsic differences in habitat quality. Long-term field studies are essential for testing hypotheses related to differential fitness of individuals among habitats.","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird Society","doi":"10.2307/1521066","usgsCitation":"Erwin, R., and Smith, D.C., 1985, Habitat comparisons and productivity in nesting common terns on the mid-Atlantic coast: Colonial Waterbirds, v. 8, no. 2, p. 155-165, https://doi.org/10.2307/1521066.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"155","endPage":"165","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198321,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649681","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erwin, R.M.","contributorId":57396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erwin","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, D. From the census data for 174 study plots we derived nine indices that estimate the annual variability of species composition, the species abundance distribution, diversity, and breeding density. The resulting matrix of study plot by stability indices was used to estimate the correlation structure of the stability indices. The correlation matrix was, in turn, subjected to a principal components analysis to derive synthetic gradients of variation. We then searched for patterns of variation in these stability gradients associated with either geographic location or habitat type. Three independent principal component axes reproduced most of the variation in the initial data and were interpreted as gradients of variation in species turnover, diversity, and breeding abundance. Thus, the annual stability of community structure apparently responds independently to species and abundance variation. Despite the clarity of the derived gradients, few patterns emerged when the plots were ordinated by either habitat or geographic location. In general, grasslands showed greater annual variation in diversity than forested habitats, and, for some habitats, northern communities were less stable than more southern communities. However, few of these patterns were very strong, and we interpret them cautiously.","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","doi":"10.2307/4086823","usgsCitation":"Noon, B., Dawson, D., and Kelly, J., 1985, A search for stability gradients in North American breeding bird communities: The Auk, v. 102, no. 1, p. 64-81, https://doi.org/10.2307/4086823.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"64","endPage":"81","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480155,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.2307/4086823","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":196475,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"102","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a637c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Noon, B.R.","contributorId":24311,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noon","given":"B.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335239,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dawson, D.K. 0000-0001-7531-212X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7531-212X","contributorId":94752,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dawson","given":"D.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kelly, J.P.","contributorId":58732,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kelly","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The tendencies for 14 passerine birds to have positive or negative associations were examined, using 7861 sample points in seven native forests on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai. All birds were at least partly insectivorous and were fairly common in forested areas, although some fed chiefly on nectar or fruit. Species—pairs were classified as primary or secondary potential competitors based on general dietary similarity. To evaluate the association between species and to account for the effect of individual species habitat preferences, partial correlations were computed for each species—pair in a study area from the simple correlations between the species and 26 habitat variables plus two quadratic terms to represent nonlinearity. The partial correlations represented a short—term (\"instantaneous\") assessment of the strength of competitive interactions, and did not reflect the accumulation of competitive displacement through time. Of 170 partial correlations in the analysis, only 10 indicated significant negative association. The general pattern was of positive association (76 significantly positive partials), which probably resulted from flocking and from attraction of birds to areas of resource superabundance. Two species showed consistent patterns of negative partial correlations over several adjacent study areas, the Japanese White—eye/Iiwi in montane Hawaii, and the Japanese White—eye/Elepaio in windward Hawaii; both patterns could be reasonably attributed to direct competition. Species—pairs were grouped by the native or exotic status of the component species. Native/exotic pairs had a significantly greater proportion of negative partial correlations (37%) than either native/native pairs (8%) or exotic/exotic pairs (0%). This pattern was consistent across the seven study areas and appeared to reflect the occurrence of interspecific competition along a broad and diffuse ecological \"front\" between a co—evolved native avifauna and recently introduced exotic species. The role of competition in the pattern was corroborated by the significantly higher proportion of negative partial correlations among species—pairs of primary potential competitors than among those of secondary potential competitors. Our results suggested that °47% of the primary potential competitors among native/exotic species—pairs may experience at least small depressions in local population density due to competition. Although the negative correlations were for the most part small (average negative r = 0.06), one species could eventually replace another as spatial displacement accumulated through time. The Japanese White—eye appeared to have a principal role in native/exotic interactions, with 62% of the partial correlations between it and native primary potential competitor species being negative. Noteworthy implications were that (1) it was important to account for the habitat responses of individual species when studying the role of interspecific competition in modifying small—scale geographic distribution; (2) competition was frequently sporadic in its geographic occurrence and in the species affected, thus supporting Wiens' (1977) theory of competition; and (3) as a consequence, the role of interspecific competition in modifying distribution may be difficult to detect statistically with small data sets.
","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Statistical methods for estimating survival rates and parameters of survival distributions from observations of radio-tagged animals will be described. These methods have been applied to medical and engineering studies and to the study of nest success. Estimates and tests based on discrete models, originally introduced by Mayfield, and on continuous models, both parametric and nonparametric, will be described. Generalizations, including staggered entry of subjects into the study and identification of mortality factors will be considered. Additional discussion topics will include sample size considerations, relocation frequency for subjects, and use of covariates.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Raptor Research Foundation Symposium on the Management of Birds of Prey. Reward studies can be used to estimate what this reporting rate is, by comparison of recoveries of rings offering a monetary reward, to ordinary rings. A reward study of American Black Ducks (Anas rubripes) is used to illustrate the design, and to motivate the development of statistical models for estimation and for testing hypotheses of temporal and geographic variation in reporting rates. The method involves indexing the data (recoveries) and parameters (reporting, harvest, and solicitation rates) by geographic and temporal strata. Estimates are obtained under unconstrained (e.g., allowing temporal variability in reporting rates) and constrained (e.g., constant reporting rates) models, and hypotheses are tested by likelihood ratio. A FORTRAN program, available from the author, is used to perform the computations.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Statistics in Ornithology ","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer-Verlag","publisherLocation":"New York, New York","usgsCitation":"Conroy, M., 1985, Maximum likelihood methods for investigating reporting rates of rings on hunter-shot birds, chap. of Statistics in Ornithology , p. 215-241.","productDescription":"xxv, 418","startPage":"215","endPage":"241","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201303,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db61017a","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Morgan, B.J.T.","contributorId":114092,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morgan","given":"B.J.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506350,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"North, P.M.","contributorId":35852,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"North","given":"P.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506349,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Conroy, M.J.","contributorId":84690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Conroy","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

About 2400 randomly distributed roadside routes of 50 three-minute stops each provide the basic data for computer analysis. One of the reports produced shows the percentage of routes on which each species is encountered in each state and each Canadian province. This percentage is used to show expansion and contraction of breeding range and also important changes in frequency of encounter within various portions of the range of each species.  Most of the recent changes in range fall in one of these 7 categories: (1) introduced species; (2) species given special protection; (3) species benefiting from artificial feeding in winter; (4) species taking advantage of shelterbelts; (5) species nesting on large highway bridges and dams; (6) species that feed on grain lost during mechanical harvesting: and (7) species losing habitat as a result of urban expansion.  Examples of each category are supported by changes in the rate of encounter.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Acta XVIII Congressus Internationalis Ornithologici, volume II","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Academy of Sciences of the USSR","publisherLocation":"Moscow","collaboration":"held in Moscow, August 16-24, 1982","usgsCitation":"Robbins, C., 1985, Recent changes in the ranges of North American birds, chap. of Acta XVIII Congressus Internationalis Ornithologici, volume II, p.  737-742.","productDescription":"580-1335","startPage":" 737","endPage":"742","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196489,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db634cd0","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ilyichev, V.D.","contributorId":114166,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ilyichev","given":"V.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506067,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gavrilov, V.M.","contributorId":112284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gavrilov","given":"V.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506066,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Robbins, C.S.","contributorId":53907,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"C.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":327864,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
