Data uses and funding sources were identified for the 76 continuous stream gages currently being operated in South Carolina. The budget of $422,200 for collecting and analyzing streamflow data also includes the cost of operating stage-only and crest-stage stations. The streamflow records for one stream gage can be determined by alternate, less costly methods, and should be discontinued. The remaining 75 stations should be maintained in the program for the foreseeable future. The current policy for the operation of the 75 stations including the crest-stage and stage-only stations would require a budget of $417,200/yr. The average standard error of estimation of streamflow records is 16.9% for the present budget with missing record included. However, the standard error of estimation would decrease to 8.5% if complete streamflow records could be obtained. It was shown that the average standard error of estimation of 16.9% could be obtained at the 75 sites with a budget of approximately $395,000 if the gaging resources were redistributed among the gages. A minimum budget of $383,500 is required to operate the program; a budget less than this does not permit proper service and maintenance of the gages and recorders. At the minimum budget, the average standard error is 18.6%. The maximum budget analyzed was $850,000, which resulted in an average standard error of 7.6 %. Agricultural irrigation in northern Indiana has increased rapidly since 1975 and might double by the year 2000. A 16.5 square-mile area in north-central Indiana was studied to determine possible effects of increased irrigation on local water supply. In 1982, an average of 2 inches of water was used to irrigate 975 acres of sandy soil overlying highly transmissive outwash deposits. Irrigational pumpage was 75 percent of the summer water use but was less than potential irrigational pumpage because (1) only one-third of the suitable land was irrigated, and (2) precipitation was near normal for the year.

\n

A three-dimensional digital flow model, calibrated with data collected in 1982, was used to simulate four hypothetical pumping plans representing various irrigational schemes and possible rainfall conditions: (1) 1982 acreage irrigated and 1982 (above normal) precipitation; (2) 1982 acreage irrigated and below-normal precipitation; (3) maximum acreage irrigated and normal precipitation; and (4) maximum acreage irrigated and below-normal precipitation. A fifth pumping plan was used to simulate maximum year-round water use. Plan 5 was not designed to simulate irrigational development but rather a maximum rate of withdrawal sustainable year-round until steady-state is reached.

\n

Of the four pumping plans that simulated irrigational pumpage, plan 4 had the greatest effect on ground- and surface-water supply. Compared with 1982 pumpage, this plan represented a thirteenfold increase in the volume of water pumped for irrigation from wells and from Turkey Creek, a stream bordering the area of study. The model predicted a potentiometric decline of as much as 20.7 feet over an 8-acre area of the aquifer. This decline was one-fourth of the available drawdown and would not dewater the source aquifer. Streamflow in Turkey Creek would be reduced 39 percent by simulated ground-water and surface-water pumpage but remaining flow would still be twice the 7-day, 10-year low flow. However, the model predicted that flow in two smaller streams would be reduced to zero.

\n

The rate of pumping used in plan 5 was nearly 4 times the pumping rate in 1982. Potentiometric decline for plan 5 was as much as 40 percent of available drawdown, and predicted streamflow reduction would cause flow in Turkey Creek to decrease below the 7-day, 10-year low flow.

\n

Results of plans 1, 2, 3, and 4 indicate that the outwash system provides adequate water for current (1982) needs and substantial growth for irrigation. However, maximum irrigational development might cause temporary, local competition for water in several parts of the area. Plan 5 indicates .that water use could increase substantially before effects of pumping would prevail year-round.

Hydrologic data were collected in seven watersheds ranging in area from 0.11 to 4.87 square miles. Principal uses of land include farming in two of the watersheds, farming and forestry in one, farming and unreclaimed surface coal mines in one, reclaimed surface coal mines in two, and an unreclaimed surface coal mine in one.

Methods and instrumentation used in collecting samples and measuring concentrations and properties of the following types of data are described in the text: streamflow in seven watersheds; ground-water levels in 46 wells in unconsolidated material and 12 wells in bedrock in or near the watersheds; precipitation in seven watersheds; solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed, and temperature of air and soil at one location; and pH, specific conductance, temperature of water, and concentrations of selected chemical constituents and suspended sediment in two watersheds.

Water-quality data were collected at 34 sites in the vicinity of the Y-12 Plant, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on April 12 and 13, 1984. Concentrations of dissolved major and trace constituents were determined; field determinations of specific conductance, pH temperature, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen were made. Gross alpha and beta activity were determined for 10 of the 34 sites, and dissolved organic carbon and oil and grease concentrations were determined for 11 of the sites sampled on June 3, 1984.

Over the past decade, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been investigating the cause of the Charleston, S.C., earthquake of 1886 and the likelihood of future earthquakes of similar magnitude (mb 6.9–7.2, Bollinger, 1977). As part of that work, multichannel reflection surveys were started in 1979 in the Charleston area, on 1 and (Behrendt and others, 1981; Hamilton and others, 1983) and offshore (Behrendt and others, 1983). The data for lines across the continental margin were tied into the USGS offshore seismic grid in the area discussed by Dillon and others (1979). At about the same time (1978–79), Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling (COCORP) lines in Georgia and in the Charleston, S. C., area were recorded (Cook and others, 1979; Cook and others, 1981; Schilt and others, 1983). The COCORP data for Georgia (Cook and others, 1979) and other reflection data to the northeast, as discussed by Harris and Bayer (1979), indicated the presence of the Appalachian décollement, extending seaward from the Appalachian Mountains. The authors of these papers inferred that the Appalachian décollement might extend across the Piedmont and Coastal Plain to the continental shelf. Subsequently, Iverson and Smithson (1982) suggested, on the basis of their reprocessing of the COCORP line in Georgia, that the décollement was rooted in the area of the Kings Mountain and the Carolina slate belts.

\n

The multichannel seismic-reflection data for the Charleston, S. C., area (Behrendt and others, 1981, 1983; Schilt and others, 1983) provided evidence, particularly strong offshore, of the existence of a reflecting surface at a depth of 11.4±1.5 km that was suggested as a décollement. Behrendt and others (1981, 1983) suggested that the Charleston earthquake of 1886 might have been caused by movement on the décollement or on associated listric faults. Seeber and Armbruster (1981) suggested that movement on the Appalachian décollement, if it continued coastward to Charleston, might have caused the Charleston earthquake of 1886. The best determined focal depths for recent seismicity, from data recorded by a seismograph network operated by the USGS in the Charleston, S. C., area since 1973, are shallower than 13+2 km (Tarr and others, 1981; and Tarr and Rhea, 1983), or above the suggested décollement.

\n

The seismic-reflection data have also shown the existence of several Triassic (?) basins beneath the Coastal Plain Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic sedimentary rock section (Behrendt and others, 1981; Behrendt, 1983; Costain and Glover, 1983; Hamilton and others, 1983; Petersen and others, 1984). The basins, in several cases, appear to be bounded by high-angle normal faults. Some of these faults may have been reactivated in Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic time as apparently reverse faults. Also they are suggested to be listric onto the décollement, thereby bearing a causal relation to Charleston seismicity (Behrendt, 1983; Behrendt and others, 1983).

The question of whether the Appalachian décollement is continuous to the coast is, therefore, important not only for the general understanding of the tectonics of the southeastern United States but for an understanding of the earthquake-hazard question as well. For these reasons, three long, deep-crustal, multichannel seismic-reflection profiles (S4, S6, and S8) were obtained by the USGS to address the problem. This report presents illustrations of interpretations of the profiles discussed by Behrendt (in press).

\n

The Appalachian décollement does not appear continuous from the Appalachian Mountains to the coast but rather appears to extend southeastward only to the Carolina slate belt. A series of reflections on lines S4, S6, and S8 and on the COCORP line is interpreted as evidence of southeastward-dipping imbricate faults, from the Brevard fault on the northwest to beyond the Augusta fault, which marks the southeastern extent of the Eastern Piedmont fault zone. The Carolina slate belt is characterized on the four seismic profiles by a complex series of diffractions and reflections extending from less than 1 s to 8 s. These arrivals are possibly the result of layering in the metasedimentary rocks complexly disrupted by the imbricate faults. A number of Triassic (?) basins are apparent in the reflection data for the rifted Charleston terrane identified from low-gradient magnetic anomalies.

During 1981 and 1982 the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mimes conducted field investigations to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Sandia Mountain Wilderness, Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties, New Mexico. This report and map represent only the results of the aeromagnetic compilation from previous publications (U.S. geological Survey, 1975a,b,c). The wilderness encompasses 61 mi2 (37,232 acres) within the Cibola National Forest, but the map area is about 145 mi2 and includes areas adjacent to the wilderness boundary.

\n

The Sandia Mountains are a part of an eastward-tilted fault block that is about 18 mi long and 8-10 mi wide and that is continuous with the Manzanita-Manzano Mountain fault blocks to the south of Tijeras Canyon (fig. 1). The westward-facing Sandia range front of Precambrian crystalline rocks is capped by about 2,500 ft of Pennsylvanian and Permian limestone, sandstone, and siltstone strata that dip 15°-20° eastward to form the dip slope of the tilted fault block.

\n

About 40-50 percent of the rocks exposed in the Sandia Mountains are of Precambrian age and include an older group of greenstone, metarhyolite, quartzite, and gneiss that is intruded by the Sandia Granite (1,445 m.y.). Paleozoic strata, about 2,500 ft thick, comprise about 30 percent of the outcrop area and form an extensive dip slope on the tilted fault block. Mesozoic strata commonly occupy synclinal basins such as that near Placitas in the Santo Domingo basin. Tertiary strata are represented by the early Tertiary Galisteo Formation and the poorly consolidated basin-f111 sediments of the Santa Fe Group.

\n

The dominant structural element is the east-tilted Sandia fault block, which is bounded on the west by the Pliocene and Miocene Sandia and Rincon-Ranchos range-front faults. These faults have as much as 20,000-28,000 ft of throw. Numerous north-trending faults along the dip slope are considered coeval with the range-front faults and have had an important influence on the localization of barite-fluorite veins. The northeast- and east-northeast-striking Placitas-San Francisco, Tijeras, and Gutierrez faults are principally of Laramide age but probably had numerous periods of movement.

\n

Regional gravity data (Suits and Cordell, 1981) indicate no significant mass distribution anomalies within the study area.

This reference section of the Middle Pennsylvanian Minturn Formation was measured in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range; the section provides a basis for comparison with the type Minturn and with possibly equivalent strata elsewhere in southern Colorado. The name \"Minturn\" was first applied to strata of Middle Pennsylvanian age near the town of Minturn in central Colorado (Tweto, 1949, p. 194-228; Tweto and Lovering, 1977, p. 33–53), about 180 km north of the section described, and has been extended to strata of approximately the same age that contain marine limestones in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range (Brill, 1952; Bolyard, 1959; Scott and Taylor, 1974). The Minturn reference section continues upward into the principal reference section of the overlying Pennsylvanian and Permian Sangre de Cristo Formation (Lindsey and Schaefer, 1984), and these two sections together provide a continuous record of upper Paleozoic strata in the northern Sangre de Cristo Range.

The reference section was measured by tape and compass in the summer of 1980; observations were recorded on a microcassette tape recorder in the field and transcribed in the office. This method permitted rapid acquisition of data on thickness, mature of contacts, color, grain size, and sedimentary features. These data are shown on the graphic section for each distinct rock unit. Rock units having common attributes or genetic relationships have been grouped together for descriptive and interpretative purposes.

tests in eastern Kansas","docAbstract":"Selected aquifer-test data from 36 counties in eastern Kansas were collected from numerous sources and publications in order to produce a documented compilation of aquifer tests in one report. Data were obtained chiefly from private consulting firms and from government agencies. Hydraulic properties determined included transmissivity, storage coefficient (where observation well was available), and in some cases hydraulic properties of a confining layer. The aquifers tested comprised three main types of rocks--consolidated rock deposits, glacial deposits, and alluvial deposits that include the ' Equus beds, ' an extensive alluvial deposit in south-central Kansas. The Theis recovery equation and the Cooper-Jacob modified nonequilibrium equation were the two principal solution methods used. Other methods used included the Theis nonequilibrium equation, the Hantush-Jacob equation for a leaky confined aquifer, Hantush 's modified leaky equation in which storage from a confining layer was considered, the Boulton 's delayed-yield equation. Additionally, a specific-capacity method of estimating transmissivity was used when only a single drawdown value was available.
