The project has been divided into three phases; this report presents the results of the first phase that characterizes current water quality data collection activities in Colorado and Ohio, including costs of sample analysis, and identifies those data potentially applicable and readily available for addressing selected water quality questions of regional and national scope. An estimated $63 million was spent during 1984 in the two States for only the laboratory analysis of water quality samples. For many agencies, total program costs are believed to be more than twice the laboratory costs. About four times more samples were reported for Ohio than for Colorado. Water quality data collection programs were tested against a set of five screening criteria. In Colorado, 34 percent of all samples met all five criteria; whereas, in Ohio, 5 percent of all samples met all five criteria. In Colorado, analyses from 114,300 samples (34 percent of the total), and in Ohio, analyses from 57,000 samples (5 percent of the total) potentially are applicable and readily available for addressing water quality questions of regional and national scope. These samples represent about $8 million in estimated laboratory costs. These data have been stored in many data bases and locations. A collective urban-stormwater data base has now been assembled on magnetic tape and contains data from the U.S. Geological Survey 's urban-stormwater program, that includes data from the Nationwide Urban Runoff Program. Stations having simultaneous rainfall, runoff, and water-quality data were selected for the data base. Rigorous quality-assurance procedures were followed to ensure that the data were of good quality. The resultant data base contains information for 723 storms from 99 stations in 22 metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Data for five or more storms are available for about two-thirds of the stations. This data base is available to the public in standardized format on magnetic tape. This publication explains the content and format of the tape. Hydrologic data were collected in seven watersheds ranging in area from 0.11 to 4.87 square miles. Methods and instrumentation used in collecting samples and measuring concentrations and properties of the following types of data are described in the text: streamflow in seven watersheds; ground-water levels in 46 wells in unconsolidated material and 12 wells in bedrock in or near the watersheds; precipitation in seven watersheds; solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed, and temperature of air and soil at one location; and pH, specific conductance, temperature of water, and concentrations of selected chemical constituents and suspended sediment in two watersheds.

During the last two weeks of August 1984, hydrologic data were collected at 15 stream sites that drain potential lignite mining areas in Lafayette, Calhoun, and Yalobusha Counties. Main channel widths ranged from approximately 60 feet at three streams (Coon Creek near Toccopula, Muckaloon Creek near Tula, and Hurricane Creek near Velma) to approximately 120 feet at two streams (Potlockney Creek near Tula, and Savannah Creek near Bruce). Maximum water depths ranged from less than 1.0 foot at most streams to over 5.0 feet at sites on Potlockney Creek near Tula and McGill Creek near Sarepta. Stream discharge ranged from 0.32 cubic feet per second in Persimmon Creek near Bruce to 18.5 cubic feet per second in Puskus Creek near Etta. The specific conductance of stream water ranged from 25 to 160 microsiemens and dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 22 to 91 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Most major ion concentrations were less than 10 mg/L with the exception of calcium (11 mg/L), sodium (12 mg/L) and sulfate (18 mg/L) in the water of Persimmon Creek near Bruce. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were greater than 5.0 mg/L at all but one site. Turbidity values were generally less than 50 units. Nitrate plus nitrite concentrations were equal to or less than 0.10 mg/L in all streams except in Potlockney Creek near Tula where the concentration was 0.11 mg/L. Copper and selenium concentrations in the water at all sampling sites ranged from below the detection limits (1 microgram/g) to 4 micrograms/g (micrograms per gram) and mercury concentrations in bottom material samples ranged from less than 0.01 microgram/g to 0.15 microgram/g. Hydrologic investigations of urban watersheds in Texas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. Studies are now in progress in Austin, and Houston. Studies have been completed in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Houston, began studies in the Houston metropolitan area in 1964. The program was expanded in 1968 to include collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Houston urban-hydrology study are as follows:

  1. To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydrologic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volumes.
    2. \n
  2. To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volumes.
    3. \n
  3. To ascertain the variation in water quality for different flow conditions and different seasons.
    4. \n
\n

This report, the nineteenth in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objective 2. The report presents hydrologic data collected in the Houston urban area for the 1982 water year (October 1, 1981 to September 30, 1982).

\n

A report by Johnson and Sayre (1973) utilized records collected from 1965 to 1969 to study the effects of urbanization on floods in the Houston area. The report also summarizes various basin parameters. A report by Waddell, Massey, and Jennings (1979) presents data on runoff from the Houston area and computed concentrations and loads of selected water-quality constituents discharged to Galveston Bay. The study utilized a variation of the \"STORM\" model developed by the Hydrologic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A report prepared by Li scum and Massey (1980) presents a technique for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods in the Houston area from drainage areas, bank-full conveyance, and percentage of urban development.

A definition of terms related to streamflow, water quality, and other hydrologic data, as used in this report, are defined in \"U.S. Geological Survey, Water-resources data for Texas, water year 1982, volume 2.\"

Statistical and trend analyses of selected water-quality data collected at three streamflow stations in the lower Neches River basin, Texas, are summarized in order to document baseline water-quality conditions in stream segments that flow through the Big Thicket National Preserve in southeast Texas. Dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams are small, less than 132 milligrams per liter in 50 percent of the samples analyzed from each of the sites. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the Neches River at Evadale (08041000) generally are large, exceeding 8.0 milligrams per liter in more than 50 percent of the samples analyzed. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations in samples from this site have not exceeded 1.8 milligrams per liter and 0.20 milligram per liter, respectively.

\n

Trend tests for dissolved solids and major ions indicate that small downtrends in total alkalinity, dissolved calcium, and hardness occurred in the Meches River at Evadale (08041000) and Pine Island Bayou near Sour Lake (08041700). Small uptrends in dissolved sulfate were detected at all three stations in the study area.

This report summarizes the methods of study and describes reconnaissance and site-selection procedures, locations and characteristics of the stations, instrumentation, and methods of collecting and storing data.\r\n\r\nThe first phase of this study involved an intensive field reconnaissance of about 7,000 sites, of which 32 basins were selected for detailed analysis. Drainage areas for the basins varied from 0.13 to 6.45 square miles, and main-channel slopes ranged from 7.6 to 276 feet per mile.\r\n\r\nFive years of 5-minute rainfall-runoff data will be colledted for each study site. These data will be used to calibrate and verify a rainfall-runoff model for each basin. The calibrated model will be used in conjunction with 80 years of National Weather Service 5-minute precipitation data to synthesize a representative 80-year streamflow record at each site. A Log-Pearson Type III frequency distribution will be applied to each record to define the magnitudes and frequencies of flood volumes at each site. These data will be used to develop regionalized multiple regression models for estimating flood-volume magnitudes and frequencies at small rural ungaged sites in Ohio.\r\n\r\nThe report also summarizes rainfall-runoff data collected from July 1981 through September 1983, but does not interpret the data. An average of eleven event periods per site were monitored where maximum 5-minute rainfall intensities varied from 0.02 to .067 inches and maximum peak discharges varied from 1 to 1,130 cubic feet per Water-quality data were collected at 34 sites in the vicinity of the Y-12 Plant, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on April 12 and 13, 1984. Concentrations of dissolved major and trace constituents were determined; field determinations of specific conductance, pH temperature, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen were made. Gross alpha and beta activity were determined for 10 of the 34 sites, and dissolved organic carbon and oil and grease concentrations were determined for 11 of the sites sampled on June 3, 1984.

Water quality data were collected at 35 sites in the vicinity of the Y-12 Plant, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on September 16 and 17, 1984. Concentrations of dissolved major and trace constituents were determined; field determinations of specific conductance, pH, temperature, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen were made. Gross alpha and beta activity were determined for seven of the sites sampled.

This Open-File Report consists of twenty-one 35-mm slides showing material that was presented at the Fourth Thematic Conference on Remote Sensing of the Environment held in San Francisco, California on April 1-4, 1985 (Purdy and others, 1985). The work was carried out in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey's Conterminous U.S. Mineral Appraisal Program for the Tonopah, Nevada 1° by 2° quadrangle (fig. 1). The slides show Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) images, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images, and geologic interpretations made from these data.
