These ' State Hydrologic Unit Maps ' are four-color maps that present information on drainage, culture, hydrography, and hydrologic boundaries and codes: (1) the 21 major water-resources regions and the 222 subregions designated by the U.S. Water Resources Council; (2) the 352 accounting units of the U.S. Geological Survey 's National Water Data Network; and (3) the 2,149 cataloging units of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Catalog of Information on Water Data. The maps are plotted on the Geological Survey State base-map series at a scale of 1:500,000 and, except for Alaska, depict hydrologic unit boundaries for all drainage basins greater than 700 mi squared (1,813 km squared). A complete list of all the hydrologic units, along with their drainage areas, their names, and the names of the States or outlying areas in which they reside, is contained in the report. These maps and associated codes provide a standardized base for use by water-resources organizations in locating, storing, retrieving, and exchanging hydrologic data. The Hydrologic Unit Codes shown on the maps have been approved as a Federal Information Processing Standard for use by the Federal establishment. LEE (cruise L9-84-CP) left Majuro, Radak chain of the Marshall Islands on July 28, 1984, cruised over the Mid-Pacific Mountains, and reached Hawaii on August 15, 1984. The main objectives of the cruise were to study the distribution and composition of ferromanganese-oxide crusts in the Marshall Islands and to retrieve a current meter/sediment trap mooring deployed in October 1983 on Horizon Guyot, Mid-Pacific Mountains (USGS LS-83-HW cruise). The quality of the geophysical data collected is generally good. The Wilcox aquifer, which underlies the entire county, was the source of most of the ground water withdrawn during 1980. Other units capable of yielding fresh ground water are the Carrizo, Queen City, and Sparta aquifers and the Reklaw Formation.
\n
About 5.4 million gallons per day (20,440 cubic meters per day) of ground water was used for all purposes during 1980. Of this amount, about 78 percent was used for public supply, 10 percent for mining, 8 percent for industrial purposes, and 4 percent for rural domestic use. Water levels have declined extensively at the city of Henderson, which used about 38 percent of all ground water consumed in Rusk County.
\n
Generally, the ground water is of acceptable quality. Water in some of the near-surface beds and some of the deeper sands in the Wilcox aquifer may have become mineralized because of oilfield operations. Ground-water contamination by oilfield brines at Henderson Oil Field has been documented. Two separate instances of streamflow contamination at Striker Creek and Henderson Oil Field have been documented.
\n
Moderate amounts of ground water are available for development. The amount that is available perennially is not known, but it is greater than that being withdrawn. Assuming a hydraulic gradient of about 8 feet per mile (1.5 meters per kilometer), at least 12 million gallons per day (45,420 cubic meters per day) of fresh ground water is being transmitted through the Wilcox and about 3 million gallons per day (11,350 cubic meters per day) through the Carrizo. About 20 million acre-feet (24,660 cubic hectometers) of freshwater is available from storage in the Wilcox and about 4 million acre-feet (4,930 cubic hectometers) from storage in the Carrizo. Additional amounts of slightly saline water are available from the major aquifers. Smaller but undetermined amounts of fresh ground water are available from the Sparta and Queen City aquifers and from the Reklaw Formation. Properly constructed wells in the Wilcox and Carrizo aquifers can be expected to yield more than 500 gallons per minute (32 liters per second) if the wells are properly spaced. Development of additional resources around the city of Henderson and the Mount Enterprise Fault System should be considered cautiously because of the probability of saltwater encroachment. Ground water in other parts of the county is practically undeveloped.
\n
Some mineralization of ground water is due to natural causes. Other mineralization of ground water is due to contamination. A program needs to be initiated to determine the extent and cause of mineralization that has taken place in freshwater sands. Water-quality data is needed at Henderson in order to monitor saltwater encroachment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr83757","usgsCitation":"Sandeen, W., 1984, Ground-water resources of Rusk County, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-757, Report: ix, 118 p.; 10 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83757.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 118 p.; 10 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":20985,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20976,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20983,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20984,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143483,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":20982,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20977,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20978,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20979,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20980,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":20981,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38746,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0757/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","county":"Rusk County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-94.5736,32.396],[-94.5647,32.4002],[-94.5606,32.4041],[-94.5571,32.4066],[-94.5517,32.4068],[-94.5507,32.4059],[-94.5503,32.4036],[-94.5439,32.4014],[-94.5402,32.3999],[-94.5368,32.4016],[-94.5329,32.4032],[-94.5285,32.4034],[-94.5275,32.4025],[-94.5282,32.3998],[-94.529,32.3971],[-94.5286,32.3952],[-94.526,32.3933],[-94.5247,32.3955],[-94.522,32.3958],[-94.521,32.394],[-94.5212,32.3912],[-94.5182,32.3879],[-94.5137,32.3895],[-94.5104,32.3898],[-94.5067,32.3887],[-94.5055,32.3909],[-94.5064,32.3928],[-94.5063,32.3951],[-94.5061,32.3973],[-94.5017,32.3976],[-94.4921,32.3957],[-94.4821,32.3907],[-94.49,32.3783],[-94.4924,32.3757],[-94.4935,32.3593],[-94.5266,32.2892],[-94.5264,32.2837],[-94.5322,32.2703],[-94.5548,32.25],[-94.56,32.2374],[-94.5697,32.2224],[-94.5789,32.2064],[-94.5817,32.1568],[-94.59,32.1311],[-94.588,32.1206],[-94.5933,32.1067],[-94.602,32.081],[-94.6023,32.0687],[-94.5975,31.9717],[-94.5125,31.9731],[-94.5115,31.9246],[-94.5059,31.9188],[-94.4998,31.914],[-94.4921,31.9081],[-94.4865,31.9028],[-94.4831,31.8967],[-94.4813,31.8925],[-94.4784,31.8869],[-94.476,31.8831],[-94.4714,31.8788],[-94.4675,31.8731],[-94.4646,31.8675],[-94.4648,31.8647],[-94.4655,31.8625],[-94.4669,31.858],[-94.4644,31.8547],[-94.4587,31.8516],[-94.4537,31.8459],[-94.938,31.8464],[-94.9861,31.8463],[-94.9852,32.1376],[-94.9873,32.3713],[-94.6595,32.3723],[-94.6558,32.3712],[-94.6541,32.3711],[-94.6482,32.3704],[-94.6384,32.3704],[-94.6299,32.3681],[-94.6208,32.3654],[-94.6138,32.3651],[-94.6053,32.3624],[-94.5997,32.364],[-94.5937,32.3641],[-94.5915,32.3654],[-94.5736,32.396]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Rusk\",\"state\":\"TX\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696c9b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sandeen, W.M.","contributorId":102488,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sandeen","given":"W.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162314,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in the southwestern part of the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These test wells are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify sites for storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW H-4 was drilled in ash-flow tuff to a total depth of 1,219 meters. Depth to water below land surface was 519 meters or at an altitude of 730 meters above sea level. After test pumping at a rate of 17.4 liters per second for approximately 9 days, the drawdown was 4.85 meters. A radioactive borehole-flow survey indicated that the Bullfrog Member was the most productive geologic unit, producing 36.5 percent of the water in the well. The second most productive geologic unit was the Tram Member, which produced 32 percent of the water. The water in test well USW H-4 is predominantly a soft, sodium bicarbonate type of water typical of water produced in tuffaceous rocks in southern Nevada. It is particularly well suited to analysis of aeromagnetic maps and profiles, where coverage commonly is of broad scope and statistical treatment is appropriate.
\n
The techniques developed by earlier workers for map data are readily adapted for depth estimates using aeromagnetic profiles. Three subroutines are presented: \"FRQAN\", which employs the complete Fourier transform to convert field intensity to the frequency domain and then computes the logarithmic energy spectrum; \"CSIZE\", which refines the spectrum to correct for the finite horizontal dimensions of magnetic sources, and \"ENSMTH\", which smooths the spectrum to clarify its decay characteristics. The average depths to sources of ensembles are obtained by manually fitting a straight line to each linear interval of the logarithmic energy-decay curve.
\n
If proper account is taken of the constraints of the method, it is capable of providing depth estimates to within an accuracy of about 10 percent under suitable circumstances. The estimates are unaffected by source magnetization and are relatively insensitive to assumptions as to source shape or distribution. Data uses and funding sources are identified for the 218 continuous streamflow gages currently (1984) being operated. These stations are supported by 18 different funding sources at a budget for the 1984 water year of $1,065,000. The streamflow-gaging program in Montana has evolved through the years as Federal, State, and local needs for surface-water data have increased. Continuous streamflow records for periods ranging from less than 1 year to more than 90 years have been collected. This report describes phase 1 of a cost-effectiveness study of the streamflow-gaging program in Montana. Evaluation of the program indicates that numerous agencies use the data for studies involving regional hydrology, hydrologic systems, and planning and design. They also use the data for operations of existing hydroelectric and irrigation dams, forecasting flood and seasonal flows, water-quality monitoring, research studies for fish habitat, and other uses such as recreational management. The occurrence and configuration of 15 regional hydrogeologic units are defined based primarily on the interpretation of borehole geophysical data. The nine aquifers and six confining beds are composed of unconsolidated clay, silt, sand, and gravel and range in age from Cretaceous to Quaternary.

Electric and gamma-ray logs from more than 1,000 Coastal Plain wells were examined. Of these, interpretive data for 302 sites, selected for log depth, quality, and distribution, were used to prepare structure contour and thickness maps for each aquifer, and a thickness map for each confining bed. These maps, along with 14 hydrogeologic sections, show the geometry, lateral extent, and vertical and horizontal relationships among the 15 hydrogeologic units.

The hydrogeologic maps and sections show that distinct lower, middle, and upper aquifers are present within the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system near the Delaware River from Burlington County to Salem County. Although the lower aquifer is recognized only in this area, the middle aquifer extends into the northeastern Coastal Plain of New Jersey where it is stratigraphically equivalent to the Farrington aquifer. The upper aquifer extends throughout most of the New Jersey Coastal Plain and is stratigraphically equivalent to the Old Bridge aquifer in the northeastern Coastal Plain. The computer program simulates two-dimensional, steady-state ground-water flow. Hydrologic data for the 1980 water year were used to calculate recharge rates, boundary fluxes, and spring discharges. Groundwater use was estimated from irrigated land maps and crop consumptive-use figures. These estimates of ground-water withdrawal, recharge rates, and boundary flux, along with leakance, were used as known values in the model calibration of transmissivity. Leakance values were adjusted between regression solutions by comparing model-calculated to measured spring discharges. In other simulations, recharge and leakance also were calibrated as prior information regression parameters, which limits the variation of these parameters using a normalized standard error of estimate.

Results from a best-fit model indicate a wide areal range in transmissivity from about 0.05 to 44 feet squared per second and in leakance from about 2.2 x 10-9 to 6.0 x 10-8 feet per second per foot. Along with parameter values, model statistics also were calculated, including the coefficient of correlation between computed and observed head (0.996), standard error of the estimates of head (40 feet), and parameter coefficients of variation (about 10-40 per-cent). Additional boundary flux was added in some areas during calibration to achieve proper fit to ground-water flow directions. Model fit improved significantly when areas that violated model assumptions were removed. Model fit also improved when y-direction (northwest-southeast) transmissivity values were larger than x-direction (northeast-southwest) transmissivity values. The model was most sensitive to changes in recharge, and in some areas, to changes in transmissivity, particularly near the spring discharge area from Milner to King Hill.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr84461","usgsCitation":"Garabedian, S., 1984, Application of a parameter-estimation technique to modeling the regional aquifer underlying the eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-461, Report: viii, 119 p.; 3 Plates: 31.82 x 29.41 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84461.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 119 p.; 3 Plates: 31.82 x 29.41 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422898,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0461/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422897,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0461/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422899,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0461/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422896,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0461/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":151646,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0461/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.91325553997359,\n 43.936820147196954\n ],\n [\n -114.91325553997359,\n 42.63060363384477\n ],\n [\n -112.18757815094972,\n 42.63060363384477\n ],\n [\n -112.18757815094972,\n 43.936820147196954\n ],\n [\n -114.91325553997359,\n 43.936820147196954\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67ab1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garabedian, S. The programs are used to selectively retrieve entries and list them in a format suitable for publication. Instructions are given for coding cards to produce tables of water-use data for each of the functional use categories. These cards contain entries that identify a particular water-use data-collection site in Florida. Entries on the cards include location information such as county code, water management district code, hydrologic unit code, and, where applicable, a site name and number. Annual and monthly pumpage is included. These entries are shown with several different headings; for example, surface water or ground water, freshwater or saline pumpages, or consumptive use. The data represent 1,189 sites. Most data were obtained from files of the U.S. Geological Survey, but some were provided by other Federal, State, and private organizations. The information is grouped by major drainage basins and listed by U.S. Geological Survey station number in downstream order. Given are county names, drainage area (in square miles), period of record, type of site (continuous record, partial record, miscellaneous measurement), date of discharge, stage, elevation, discharge, and remarks. An envelope curve for the New York data was developed from a plot of maximum known discharge versus drainage area, and was compared with a like curve derived from maximum known discharge data gathered throughout the United States. The national curve ranges from about 3.0 times higher than the New York curve at a drainage area of 1.0 square mile to about 4.5 times higher at 1 ,000 square miles. The relative magnitude of flood discharges in four hydrologic regions of New York (west, north, southeast, Long Island) is shown in graphs relating maximum known discharge to drainage area. The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in and near the southwestern part of the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These test wells are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify suitable sites for underground storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW G-4 was drilled to a total depth of 915 meters through volcanic rocks, consisting mostly of ash-flow tuff. Depth of water in the well during and after drilling and testing ranged from 538 to 544 meters below land surface, at approximate altitude of 728 meters above sea level. Drawdown in the well was about 3 meters after test pumping more than 5,000 minutes at a rate of 16 liters per second. A borehold-flow survey indicated that almost all water withdrawn from the well was contributed by the zone between a depth of about 865 and 915 meters below land surface. Analysis of a composite water sample collected after well completion showed the water to contain 216 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, with relatively large concentrations of silica, sodium, and bicarbonate.
