In this report, the effects of five characteristics on the hydrologic responses of soils in Nebraska are evaluated quantitatively, soils are grouped through use of a simplified coding system according to similarities in hydrologic responses, and are mapped according to these responses. \r\n\r\nGeneral soils maps of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service and data for the physical properties of the soils proved well-suited to hydrologic interpretation. This interpretation of the maps and data led to the selection of three characteristics as classification variables: Average permeability of the 60-inch soil profile, average maximum soil slope, and depth to the seasonal high water table. Permeability of the least permeable horizon and available water capacity, although not needed as classification variables, are useful in explaining some of the hydrologic responses of soils. \r\n\r\nThe primary soil units used in groupings and interpretation of the soils for this study are the soil associations. A computer program is presented that sorts the soils into groups and calculates statistics for each group. The 147 soil associations in Nebraska were thus sorted into 29 hydrologic soil groups. This report is the major product of phase 3. Based on the authors ' understanding of the ground-water-quality monitoring system and input from local offices, an ideal network was designed. The proposed network includes 317 wells and 8 stream-gaging stations. Because limited funds are available to implement the monitoring network, the proposed network is designed to correspond to the ideal network insofar as practicable, and is composed mainly of 214 wells that are already being monitored by a local agency. In areas where network wells are not available, arrangements will be made to add wells to local networks. The data collected by this network will be used to assess the ground-water quality of the entire Salinas River drainage basin. After 2 years of data are collected, the network will be evaluated to test whether it is meeting the network objectives. Subsequent network evaluations will be done very 5 years. Analyses have been made of water from nearly 10,000 wells by 8 agencies. Those analyses that meet reliability criteria have been aggregated by geologic source of water into four principal aquifer groupings--Holocene-Pleistocene aquifers, Tertiary aquifers, Mesozoic aquifers, and Paleozoic aquifers. \r\n\r\nFor each aquifer grouping, data for specific conductance and 24 constituents in the water are summarized statistically. Also, diagrams are presented showing differences in statistical parameters, or in chemical composition, of water from the different aquifer groupings. Additionally, for each grouping except Paleozoic aquifers, maps show ranges in concentration of dissolved solids, calcium, alkalinity, and sulfate. In areas where data are insufficient to delimit, ranges in concentration also are shown on the maps. \r\n\r\nPoint-source contamination has been identified at 41 locations and nonpoint-source contamination in 3 areas, namely, the central Platte Valley, Holt County, and Boyd County. Potential for nonpoint-source contamination exists in 10 major areas, which together comprise more than one-third of the State. \r\n\r\nExisting data are mostly from specific projects having limited areas and objectives. Consequently, a lack of data exists for other areas and for certain geologic units, particularly the Mesozoic and Paleozoic aquifers. To conduct the needed special studies , the plan recognizes the need for the construction and drilling of many new wells at specific locations and to selected depths. This report presents time-drawdown data reported by Mobil Oil Corporation from singly (A or B or C or D sandstone interval) and multiply (A, B, C, and D sandstone Intervals) completed wells for the August 16-17, 1982 aquifer test at the South Trend Development Area Site 1. This report also describes the results of flowmeter and brine-injection tests by the U.S. Geological Survey in monitoring well 16P52. Well 16P52 is open to sandstone intervals A, B, C, and D. \r\n\r\nOn July 26, 1982, water was injected at a rate of 1.43 cubic feet per minute above the A sandstone interval in well 16P52. Based on flowmeter data, the calculated rates of flow were 1.23 cubic feet per minute between the A and B sandstone intervals, 0.63 cubic foot per minute between the B and C sandstone intervals, and less than 0.17 cubic foot per minute between the C and D sandstone intervals. \r\n\r\nBased upon brine-slug-injection tests conducted during August 1982, the calculated flow rates between sandstone intervals A and B are as follows: 0.01 cubic foot per minute upward flow (B to A) about 5 hours after pumping began for the aquifer test; 0.004 cubic foot per minute upward flow (B to A) about 21 hours after pumping began; and 0.0 cubic foot per minute about 46 hours after the pump was turned off. The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in the southwestern part of the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These test wells are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify sites for storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW H-4 was drilled in ash-flow tuff to a total depth of 1,219 meters. Depth to water below land surface was 519 meters or at an altitude of 730 meters above sea level. After test pumping at a rate of 17.4 liters per second for approximately 9 days, the drawdown was 4.85 meters. A radioactive borehole-flow survey indicated that the Bullfrog Member was the most productive geologic unit, producing 36.5 percent of the water in the well. The second most productive geologic unit was the Tram Member, which produced 32 percent of the water. The water in test well USW H-4 is predominantly a soft, sodium bicarbonate type of water typical of water produced in tuffaceous rocks in southern Nevada. Each area had one site draining an unmined basin and a nearby site(s) draining a partly surface-mined basin. Flow-duration curves for streams draining surface-mined land had lower variability than those from unmined land. By adjusting an index of variability according to the percentage of surface-mined land in a basin, present techniques can be used to develop synthetic flow-duration curves. Surface mining changes basin characteristics so that peak flows decrease and low flows increase. Regression equations were developed relating storm runoff volume and peak discharge to basin characteristics and climatological data. Concentrations of dissolved solids, sulfate , and calcium were higher in streams draining extensively mined areas. Different mining areas of Illinois yield regional differences in concentrations of these substances. Surface-mined basins had lower suspended-sediment yields than unmined basins. These data included continuous records of discharge, precipitation, and air temperature. Daily records of sediment concentrations and sediment discharges were also obtained and periodic observations of water-quality data taken. A compilation of all these data is presented. The observed climatic and hydrologic data from these basins were used to calibrate the U.S. Geological Survey Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System for each watershed. The calibrated models of each basin were then used with a set of nearby, long-term climatic data to simulate a long record of stream-flow. A 68-year record of daily streamflow and 57 years of annual peaks were simulated for each site. These simulated records were analyzed to obtain flood-frequency curves, flow-duration curves, mean-annual discharges, and the 7-day, 10-year low flow for each site. The flow characteristics computed from the simulated records of discharge were analyzed graphically and statistically by regression analysis to investigate the degree of relationship and to define the relationship between mining and runoff. For this sample of small basins, peak flows, discharges for 10- and 50-percent flow durations, and mean-annual flows are directly related to percent of drainage area disturbed (measured from aerial photos) and drainage area. Recharge during storm runoff resulted in significant increases of bacterial densities in the ground water. Densities of fecal coliform bacteria in samples collected from Barton Springs, the major point of ground-water discharge, ranged from less than 1 colony per 100 milliliters during dry weather in November 1981 and January and August 1982 to 6,100 colonies per 100 milliliters during a storm in May 1982. Densities of fecal streptococcal bacteria ranged from 1 colony per 100 miniliters during dry weather in December 1981 to 11,000 colonies per 100 miniliters during a storm in May 1982.</p>\n<p>Recharge during storm runoff resulted in significant decreases in the specific conductance and the concentration of total nitrate nitrogen in the ground water. Specific-conductance values of samples from Barton Springs ranged from 438 micromhos per centimeter at 25&deg; Celsius after a storm in October 1981 to 682 micromhos after a relatively long period of deficient rainfall in September 1982. The specific-conductance values and, thus, the mineralization of the ground water in the recharge zone generally were inversely related to the quantity of recharge. Nitrate nitrogen was the most prevalent form of nitrogen in the ground water. Concentrations of total nitrate nitrogen in samples from Barton Springs ranged from 0.51 milligram per liter after a storm in October 1981 to 1.6 milligrams per liter during dry weather in February and September 1982.</p>\n<p>Although the values of these and other properties or constituents in ground water varied temporally and areally, available data indicate that the values of most of the major and minor elements in ground water in the recharge zone of the Edwards aquifer were significantly less than the primary maximum or secondary maximum contaminant levels set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water systems.</p>\n<p>Bacteriological data for Barton Springs and selected wells indicate that the ground water in the aquifer is susceptible to bacterial pollution, especially during storm runoff. Methods used to determine mean annual sediment yields included reservoir sedimentation surveys, suspended-sediment sampling in streams, and estimates of gross erosion and indirect estimation based on physical characteristics of the basin. Multiple-regression equations were developed and evaluated for their adequacy in estimating mean annual sediment yields from small, ungaged watersheds in eastern Montana. Sediment yields determined from reservoir surveys were used as the dependent variable because they were considered the most representative of long-term yields. Independent variables consisted of basin characteristics which could be measured from maps or obtained from published sources. Consequently, equations developed in this study do not require onsite data. Evaluation of equations indicated that the best prediction capability was obtained when reservoir basins were segregated into classes of similar vegetation/soil complex. The predictive capability of regression equations developed for each of three classes of vegetation/soil complex, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R2), ranged from 0.59 to 0.96. Corresponding standard errors ranged from 95 to 20 percent. The equations are applicable for small drainage basins of 2 square miles or less within the study area. Included are data collected from 1966 to 1979 by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation for 98 public-supply wells, and data collected during 1982 by the U.S. Geological Survey for 29 wells. The data for the 98 public supplies indicate that 85 percent have a record of total coliform occurrence in the raw water. Data from the 29 wells sampled by the Geological Survey indicate that 55 percent have a record total coliform occurrence. Further comparison of the two data sets indicates that the Geological Survey data generally indicate a lower percentage of sites with coliform occurrence and, in some cases, a different pattern of occurrence than did the Department of Environmental Regulation data.
