A study of runoff to selected lakes was done in the Twin Cities metropolitan area from July 1981 to December 1982. The purpose of the study was to determine differences in nutrient-loading characteristics for lakes with and without wetlands and settling ponds. The study also quantified nutrient loading to lakes on a storm, seasonal, and annual basis, complementing an inlake water-quality study of these lakes done by the Metropolitan Council.
\nDischarge and water-quality data were collected periodically during 1981 and continuously during 1982 at 22 sites located in seven lake watersheds Bryant Lake, Lake Elmo, Fish Lake, Lake George, Lake Riley, Spring Lake, and Square Lake. Basin characteristics and land use were determined for each watershed. Recording instruments provided continuous discharge records at 14 sites and continuous rainfall records at six sites. Automatic water-quality samplers were used at lake inlets. The automatic samplers collected samples at 1- to 2-hour intervals during storms. Lake-outlet samples were collected manually on a weekly basis during flow. Samples were analyzed for suspended solids and nutrients. Atmospheric-input data were collected at eight sites from September 23 to November 1, 1982. Discharge and water-quality data were used to calculate storm, seasonal, and annual loads of total suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, nitrite-plus-nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, and ammonia-plus-organic nitrogen.
\nAll data collected during the study are documented in tables and graphs that contain (1) watershed characteristics and land use; (2) storm concentrations; (3) storm, seasonal, and annual loads; (4) storm hydrographs; (5) atmospheric-input concentrations and loads; (6) storm, seasonal, and annual precipitation totals; and (7) results of quality-assurance tests.

The lines were located between latitudes 39° and 40°10'N and longitudes 73°50' and 74° 40'W. High-resolution seismicreflection data were collected using an EG&G Uniboom (400-4000 Hz) and an ORE Mode! 1035 (3.5 kHz) subbottom profiling system in conjunction with a Klein Sidescan Sonar System (100 kHz). While the quality of the data is variable, it is virtually all usable and generally of good quality but rarely excellent. Due to equipment failure, only 880 km of 3.5 kHz and 796 km of sidescan-sonar data were recorded. Navigation was by Loran-C. and fixes were recorded at 5-minute time intervals with some gaps in the data.
Analysis of the sidescan-sonar data shows five recognizable features in the study area. Megaripples (2-3 m crestal spacing) were recorded almost exclusively on coast parallel tracklines, and were most abundant at distances of 10 to 20 km offshore. Nonlinear light and dark patches were abundant in the northern half of the study area and offshore to the south. Two groups of linear light and dark bands were observed as being clearly parallel or oblique to the bathymetric contours and were noted throughout the survey area. Trawl marks were noted on only one line near the shore, just north of Barnegat Inlet.
These observations indicate widespread, perhaps frequent, movement of the surface sands on the Inner New Jersey continental shelf. Directions of sediment transport are suggested by the orientation of the alternating light and dark bands and the ripples, assuming a parallel and/or transverse relative movement. Asymmetry of the ripples was not observed on the sidescan sonographs.
The high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles indicate three distinct types of subbottom stratigraphy in the top 20 to 40 m of sediment. Reflectors in the area north of Barnegat Inlet dip gently (<1° ) to the south-southeast. The thirty plotted reflectors are 5 to 12 m apart (vertically), are essentially parallel, and are truncated on the updip (northern) limits where they outcrop or subcrop (under a 2-4 m overburden). Truncated by erosion, they are the dominant cause of N65° east-striking topographic ridges in this offshore region. The age of the reflectors is· inferred to be Tertiary from the strike and dip, which are the same as the Tertiary beds of adjacent New Jersey.

Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data-collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. The data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Iowa.

It presents 18 charts giving newly developed relations for acceleration, velocity, and duration versus site earthquake intensity for near- and far-field hard and soft sites and earthquakes having magnitudes above and below 7. The material for this report is based on procedures developed at the Waterways Experiment Station. Although these procedures are suggested primarily for large dams, they may also be applicable for other facilities. \r\n\r\nBecause no standard procedure exists for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams, a number of precautions are presented to guide users. The selection of earthquake motions is dependent on which one of two types of engineering analyses are performed. A pseudostatic analysis uses a coefficient usually obtained from an appropriate contour map; whereas, a dynamic analysis uses either accelerograms assigned to a site or specified respunse spectra. Each type of analysis requires significantly different input motions. All selections of design motions must allow for the lack of representative strong motion records, especially near-field motions from earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater, as well as an enormous spread in the available data. Limited data must be projected and its spread bracketed in order to fill in the gaps and to assure that there will be no surprises. Because each site may have differing special characteristics in its geology, seismic history, attenuation, recurrence, interpreted maximum events, etc., as integrated approach gives best results. Each part of the site investigation requires a number of decisions. In some cases, the decision to use a 'least ork' approach may be suitable, simply assuming the worst of several possibilities and testing for it. Because there are no standard procedures to follow, multiple approaches are useful. For example, peak motions at a site may be obtained from several methods that involve magnitude of earthquake, distance from source, and corresponding motions; or, alternately, peak motions may be assigned from other correlations based on earthquake intensity. Various interpretations exist to account for duration, recurrence, effects of site conditions, etc. Comparison of the various interpretations can be very useful. Probabilities can be assigned; however, they can present very serious problems unless appropriate care is taken when data are extrapolated beyond their data base. In making deterministic judgments, probabilistic data can provide useful guidance in estimating the uncertainties of the decision. \r\n\r\nThe selection of a design ground motion for large dams is based in the end on subjective judgments which should depend, to an important extent, on the consequences of failure. Usually, use of a design value of ground motion representing a mean plus one standard deviation of possible variation in the mean of the data puts one in a conservative position. If failure presents no hazard to life, lower values of design ground motion may be justified, providing there are cost benefits and the risk is acceptable to the owner. Where a large hazard to life exists (i.e., a dam above an urbanized area) one may wish to use values of design ground motion that approximate the very worst case. Perennial streams are defined in this report as having 7-day, 10-year low flows greater than zero. The perennial stream drainage was delineated using data from continuous-record and low-flow partial-record stations, and reconnaissance-site observations. The reconnaissance was conducted during the unusually dry summer of 1980. In analysis, the State was divided into hydrologic regions; they were used in conjunction with index stations to establish the recurrence intervals of flow observed, during the reconnaissance. When necessary, relations were developed by region to adjust observed flow to 10-year recurrence interval flows. Results were obtained through linear multiple regression. It also presents functions relating uncertainties in records to the number of discharge measurements made at these and 21 other stations. The application is unusual in that it includes analysis of the uncertainty of discharge as affected by backwater from ice. Total uncertainty consists of errors incurred during measurement and during data processing. An average of 46.8 percent of the total variance for the 21 stations not affected by backwater was due to measurement variance, and 53.2 percent was due to process variance. Data from the remaining 33 stations were divided into summer (open-water) periods and the winter (backwater) periods. An average of 49.3 percent of the total variance for the summer-period stations was due to measurements variance; 50.7 percent was due to process variance. An average of 25.2 percent of the total variance for the winter-period stations was due to measurement variance; 74.8 percent was due to process variance. Results of the seasonal division of average variance suggest that the process and measurement variances are essentially equal during open-water periods and that process variance is considerably greater than the measurement variance during backwater periods. The errors in winter discharge records significantly increased average uncertainty in the records of annual mean discharge. The precipitation-runoff modeling system is a modular-design, deterministic, distributed-parameter modeling system developed to evaluate the impacts of various combinations of precipitation, climate, and land use on streamflow, sediment yields, and general basin hydrology. Basin response to normal and extreme rainfall and snowmelt can be simulated to evaluate changes in water balance relationships, flow regimes, flood peaks and volumes, soil-water relationships, sediment yields, and groundwater recharge. Parameter-optimization and sensitivity analysis capabilites are provided to fit selected model parameters and evaluate their individual and joint effects on model output. The modular design provides a flexible framework for continued model system enhancement and hydrologic modeling research and development. Kings Bay and Cumberland Sound , the site of the Poseidon Submarine Base in southeast Georgia, are experiencing high rates of sediment deposition and accumulation, which are causing serious navigational and operational problems. Velocity, bathymetry, turbidity, and bottom-material data suggest that the area in the vicinity of lower Kings Bay is accumulating deposits of suspended sediment transported from Cumberland Sound on the floodtide and from upper Kings Bay and the tidal marsh drained by Marianna Creek on the ebbtide. Suspended-sediment discharges computed for consecutive 13-hour ebbtides and floodtides showed that a net quantity of suspended sediment was transported seaward from upper Kings Bay and Marianna Creek. A net landward transport of suspended sediment computed at the St. Marys Entrance indicated areas seaward of St. Marys Entrance may be supplying sediment to the shoaling areas of the estuary, including lower Kings Bay. The increase in New England and New York occurred primarily before the mid-1950's. Since the mid1960's, there has been no significant change in the acidity of precipitation in this region; however, sulfate concentrations have decreased and nitrate concentrations may have increased. The time of initial acidification in Southeastern Canada is not known because of a lack of historical data. In the Southeastern United States, the evaluation of whether precipitation has been acidified is complicated by meager data. The available data show that precipitation is more acidic than would be expected for sites unaffected by anthropogenic emissions. In addition, comparison of recent data with the meager historical data suggests, but does not unambiguously prove, increased acidification since the 1950's. In the Western United States, available data indicate that precipitation at individual sites has been acidified by anthropogenic emissions. The acidification generally has been attributable to localized sources, and the time of initial acidification is undefined. \r\n\r\nAcidification of lakes and streams in the Northeastern United States has occurred in a time frame compatible with the hypothesis that acidification of precipitation was the cause. The acidification of surface waters appears to have occurred before the mid- to late 1960's. In Southeastern Canada, the best-documented cases of acidified lakes point to localized sources of acidic emissions as the cause. Sparse evidence of recent regional acidification of lakes and streams exists, but evidence for acidification of precipitation as the cause is largely lacking. In the Southeastern United States, most data on acidification of surface waters are ambiguous, and in the West, most of the data reflect local conditions. However, recent analysis of a national network of remote stream sampling stations indicates that, since the mid- to late 1960's, sulfate concentrations have increased in the Southeast and the West, with a concurrent decrease in alkalinity. The data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are for earthquakes that were originally included in a study of seismic risk in the United States (Algermissen, 1969). This data file has been recompiled and updated through 1980. Some revisions of epicenters and intensities in the original file have been made, and intensities have been assigned to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. Only earthquakes that had epicenters within the boundary of the state are listed in table 1, even though earthquakes that had epicenters in bordering states or countries may have been felt or may have caused damage in the state. Intensity values were updated from data sources that were not available at the time or original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 represent best estimates of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for the earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.
