Principal purposes of the program are to provide a means for participating water laboratories to: (1) identify analytical problem areas; (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods and; (3) provide reference samples for continuing quality assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water analysis data for Survey use. Analytical data submitted by the participating laboratories that analyzed the respective reference samples distributed in October 1982 are presented. Relative performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination and statistical evaluation of the data are given in 14 tables. Ground magnetic measurements made in the vicinity of several known cased wells yielded total field anomalies with peak values ranging from about 1,500 to 6,000 gammas. The anomalies measured on the ground are very narrow and, considering noise due to other cultural and geologic sources, a line spacing on the order of 50 feet (15.2 m) would be necessary to locate all casings in the test area. \r\n\r\nThe mathematical model used to represent a casing was a set of magnetic pole pairs. By use of a non-linear least squares curve fitting (inversion) program, model parameters which characterize each test casing were determined. The position and strength of the uppermost pole was usually well resolved. The parameters of lower poles were not as well resolved but it appears that the results are adequate for predicting the anomalies which would be observed at aircraft altitudes. Modeling based on the parameters determined from the ground data indicates that all of the test casings could be detected by airborne measurements made at heights of 150 to 200 feet (45.7-61.0 m) above the ground, provided lines spaced as closely as 330 feet (100 m) were used and provided noise due to other cultural and geologic sources is not very large. Given the noise levels of currently available equipment and assuming very low magnetic gradients due to geologic sources, the detection range for total field measurements is greater than that for measurements of the horizontal or vertical gradient of the total intensity. \r\n\r\nElectrical self-potential anomalies were found to be associated with most of the casings where measurements were made. However, the anomalies tend to be very narrow and, in several cases, they are comparable in magnitude to other small anomalies which are not directly associated with casings. Measurements made with a terrain conductivity meter and slingram system were negative. However, from other work it is known that electrical resistivity and induced polarization measurements can be influenced significantly by the presence of a casing. \r\n\r\nIt is concluded that detailed ground magnetic surveys would be effective in locating casings within relatively small areas. It would be very costly to cover large areas with ground surveys but it appears that airborne surveys may be a cost-effective means of locating wells when the search area is on the order of a few square miles or more. Also, airborne methods could be used in some areas where access to the area on the ground is difficult or impossible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83702","usgsCitation":"Frischknecht, F.C., Muth, L., Grette, R., Buckley, T., and Kornegay, B., 1983, Geophysical methods for locating abandoned wells: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-702, ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83702.","productDescription":"ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34601,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a85dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frischknecht, Frank C.","contributorId":57838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frischknecht","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Muth, L.","contributorId":10035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muth","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grette, R.","contributorId":13230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grette","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Buckley, T.","contributorId":17222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buckley","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kornegay, B.","contributorId":93041,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kornegay","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The Shield is bordered on the southwest by Cenozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks of the Red Sea paar and on the east by the Arabian Platform, an area of basin sedimentation throughout Phanerozoic time. The Shield appears to have been formed by successive episodes of island arc volcanism and sea-floor spreading, followed by several cycles of compressive tectonism and metamorphism. An interpretation and synthesis of a deep-refraction seismic profile from the Riyadh area to the Farasan Islands, and regional gravity, aeromagnetic, heat flow, and surface geologic data have yielded a self-consistent regional-scale model of the crust and upper mantle for this area. \r\n\r\nThe model consists of two 20 km-thick layers of crust with an average compressional wave velocity in the upper crust of about 6.3 km/s and an average velocity in the lower. crust of about 7.0 km/s. This crust thins abruptly to less than 20 km near the southwestern end of the profile where Precambrian outcrops abut the Cenozoic rocks and to 8 km beneath the Farasan Islands. The data over the coastal plain and Red Sea shelf areas are fit satisfactorily by an oceanic crustal model. A major lateral velocity inhomogeneity in the crust is inferred about 25 km northeast of Sabhah and is supported by surface geologic evidence. \r\n\r\nThe major velocity discontinuities occur at about the same depth across the entire Shield and are interpreted to indicate horizontal metamorphic stratification of the Precambrian crust. Several lateral inhomogenities in both the upper and lower .crust of the . Shield are interpreted, to indicate bulk compositional variations. \r\n\r\nThe subcrustal portion of the model is composed of a hot, low-density lithosphere beneath the Red Sea which is systematically cooler and denser to the northeast. This model provides a mechanism which explains the observed topographic uplift, regional gravity pattern, heat flow, and mantle compressional wave velocities. Such a lithosphere could be produced by upwelling of hot asthenosphere beneath the Red Sea which then flows laterally beneath the lithosphere of the Arabian Plate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83638","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., Blank, H., Mooney, W.D., and Healy, J.H., 1983, Crustal structure of southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-638, ii, 55 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83638.","productDescription":"ii, 55 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140175,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0638/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34400,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0638/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acee4b07f02db67f432","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M. Additional study and monitoring are needed to detect possible hydrologic changes caused by coal mining.</p><p>Much of the ground-water discharge from the Star Point Sandstone in the Mesaverde Group in the Wasatch Plateau occurs along faults. In the Book Cliffs, where faulting is less extensive, most of the ground-water discharge is from the Flagstaff Limestone. The Flagstaff Limestone is greatly diffusive, has a small storage coefficient, and contains water which is perched.</p><p>Springs issuing from the Star Point Sandstone in the Mud Creek drainage (Wasatch Plateau) had recession indexes greater than 365 days per log cycle. Springs issuing at higher altitudes from the Colton Formation and the Flagstaff Limestone in the Soldier Creek area (Book Cliffs) have great seasonal variability, with recession indexes ranging from 24 to 115 days per log cycle. Estimated transmissivities in the Soldier Creek area ranged from 0.003 foot squared per day in the lower part of the Castlegate Sandstone to 0.07 foot squared per day in the Price River Formation.</p><p>Seepage from the Star Point Sandstone is the major contributor to base flow of the stream in Eccles Canyon (Wasatch Plateau). Discharge from the Blackhawk and other formations contributed about 2,200 acre-feet, or 21 percent of the streamflow. The recharge to a 4,020-acre outcrop of the Flagstaff Limestone in the Soldier Creek area was determined from measurements of the discharge of springs and seepage gains in streams. The estimated recharge was 2 inches per year, or 12 percent of the April 1 snowpack, or 9 percent of the precipitation during 1980.</p><p>Benthic-diversity indexes at streams in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau are related to the size of the bed material. The Shannon-Weiner diversity index for five sites in the Mud Creek drainage ranged from 1.57 to 4.20 during four sampling periods in 1979-80. In the Soldier Creek drainage, the diversity index for four sampling sites ranged from 0.8 to 2.3 during three sampling periods in 1979-80.</p><p>Sediment deposition in Scofield Reservoir during 1943-79 was estimated to be 3,000 acre-feet but most of the coal deposition in the reservoir occurred prior to about 1950. An anaerobic zone develops in the reservoir during the summer, but the water in the reservoir completely mixes during late summer or early fall.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83208","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Waddell, K., Dodge, J., Darby, D., and Theobald, S., 1983, Hydrology of the Price River basin, Utah, with emphasis on selected coal-field areas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-208, Report: 145 p.; 5 Plates: 23.89 x 23.89 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83208.","productDescription":"Report: 145 p.; 5 Plates: 23.89 x 23.89 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424073,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424071,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/figure-1a.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424070,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/figure-2-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424069,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/figure-2-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424068,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139917,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":424072,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0208/figure-16.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Price River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.38649537660416,\n              39.9980852966755\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.38649537660416,\n              39.24068299668005\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.33455445863544,\n              39.24068299668005\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.33455445863544,\n              39.9980852966755\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.38649537660416,\n              39.9980852966755\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdb77","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waddell, K.M.","contributorId":59009,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Waddell","given":"K.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154902,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dodge, J.E.","contributorId":21133,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dodge","given":"J.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154899,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Darby, D.W.","contributorId":49333,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Darby","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154900,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Theobald, S.M.","contributorId":51270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Theobald","given":"S.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154901,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Between May and December 1980 data were collected as far south as the Coos River in Western Oregon, as far north as Baker Bay in Southwestern Washington and as far inland as Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. In an elutriation test, bottom material from a dredging site is mixed with native water and the filtrate is analysed. Elutriation test results showed variability in concentrates of dissolved chemicals as follows: in micrograms per liter (micro g/l), manganese ranged from 0 to 10,000, iron from 10 to 4300, zinc from 1 to 90, and phenols from 9 to 420; in milligrams per liter (mg/l), ammonia as nitrogen ranged from 0.03 to 46 and organic carbon from 0.5 to 45. Pacific Ocean nodules have the highest average manganese, nickel, and copper contents, and Atlantic Ocean nodules have the highest average iron content. The average manganese, nickel, and copper contents generally increase toward the equator in both hemispheres, and iron content generally decreases. The variation of metal content with water depth is not linear; instead, there appears to be a threshold depth of about 2,900 to 3,000 m, above which combined nickel and copper contents are generally less than 1 percent and below which cobalt content is generally less than about 0.6 percent. \r\n\r\nThe composition of the nodules varies widely, but three rarely overlapping types that are of possible economic interest can be recognized. (1) Nodules containing more than about 1 percent combined nickel and copper only exceptionally contain more than 0.5 percent cobalt and 35 percent manganese. (2) Nodules containing more than 0.5 percent cobalt rarely contain more than 1 percent combined nickel and copper and 35 percent manganese. (3) Nodules containing more than 35 percent manganese only exceptionally contain more than 0.5 percent cobalt, although they average nearly 1.1 percent combined nickel and copper. Current economic interest in nodule mining is focused on the Clarion-Clipperton zone in the northeastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, the largest known area in which nodules average 1.8 percent or more combined nickel and copper. Several other areas in which nodules are rich in these metals are found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and may be viewed as targets for exploration. \r\n\r\nNearly 60 chemical elements have been found in manganese nodules, many in concentrations far exceeding their crustal abundances. The amounts in which many minor elements are present vary with the amounts of principal metals present, but the three metal types described above do not include the maximum reported values for several other elements, such as titanium (8.9 percent), vanadium (0.5), zinc (9.0), and lead (0.75). It seems possible, therefore, that there may be other kinds of metal-rich types, some of which may have p6tential economic value. \r\n\r\nMany of the variations in nodule composition are in large part a function of variations in mineral composition, to which many factors contribute. Some of the regional variations can be broadly related to oceanic circulation, basin morphology, and depth, but a better understanding of ocean processes and regional oceanography and geology is needed to explain all the variations observed in the composition of manganese nodules.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir886","usgsCitation":"McKelvey, V.E., Wright, N.A., and Bowen, R.W., 1983, Analysis of the world distribution of metal-rich subsea manganese nodules: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 886, iv, 55 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir886.","productDescription":"iv, 55 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124693,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0886/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30694,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0886/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e778","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKelvey, Vincent Ellis","contributorId":92650,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKelvey","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"Ellis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147340,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bowen, Roger W.","contributorId":21142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bowen","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The amphipod population is associated with a homogeneous, relict fine-grained sand body 0.10-1.5 m thick that is deposited during the marine transgression over the Bering land bridge 8,000-10,000 yr B.P. Modern current and water mass movements and perhaps whale feeding activity prevent modern deposition in this area. \r\n\r\nThe distribution of the transgressive sand sheet, associated amphipod community and feeding gray whales mapped by aerial survey correlate closely with three types of sea-floor pits observed on high (500 kHz) and low (105 kHz) resolution side-scan sonar; they are attributed to gray whale feeding traces and their subsequent current scour modification. The fresh and modified feeding pits are present in 22,000 km2 of the basin and they cover a total of 2 to 18% of the sea floor in different areas of the feeding region. The smallest size class of pits approximates whale mouth gape size and is assumed to represent fresh whale feeding pits. Fresh feeding disturbance of the sea floor is estimated to average about 5.7% for a full feeding season. Combined with information that 34% of the measured benthic biomass is amphipod prey species, and calculating the number of gray whale feeding days in the Alaskan waters plus amount consumed per day, it can be estimated that Chirikov Basin, 2% of the feeding area, supplies a minimum of 5.3 to 7.1% of the gray whale's food resource in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. If a maximum of 50% of the fresh feeding features are assumed to be missed because they parallel side-scan beam paths, then a maximum whale food resource of 14.2% is possible in northeastern Bering Sea. Because of side-scan techniques and possible higher amphipod biomass estimates, a reasonable minimum estimate of the total whale food resource in northeastern Bering Sea is 10%. \r\n\r\nThese data show that side-scan sonar is a powerful new technique for analyzing marine mammal benthic feeding grounds. Sonographs reveal that the gray whales profoundly disturb the substrate and initiate substantial further erosion by bottom currents, all of which enhances productivity of the prey species and results in a 'farming of the sea floor'. In turn, because of the high concentration of whale prey species in a prime feeding ground that is vulnerable to the development of petroleum and mining for sand, great care is required in the exploitation of these resources in the Chirikov Basin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83727","usgsCitation":"Nelson, C., Johnson, K., and Barber, J., 1983, Assessment of gray whale feeding grounds and sea floor interaction in the northeastern Bering Sea: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-727, 112 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83727.","productDescription":"112 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141014,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0727/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37413,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0727/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671f9e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, C.H.","contributorId":88346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"C.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, K.R.","contributorId":28599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"K.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Barber, John H.","contributorId":90305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barber","given":"John H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Results were obtained through linear multiple regression. It also presents functions relating uncertainties in records to the number of discharge measurements made at these and 21 other stations. The application is unusual in that it includes analysis of the uncertainty of discharge as affected by backwater from ice. Total uncertainty consists of errors incurred during measurement and during data processing. An average of 46.8 percent of the total variance for the 21 stations not affected by backwater was due to measurement variance, and 53.2 percent was due to process variance. Data from the remaining 33 stations were divided into summer (open-water) periods and the winter (backwater) periods. An average of 49.3 percent of the total variance for the summer-period stations was due to measurements variance; 50.7 percent was due to process variance. An average of 25.2 percent of the total variance for the winter-period stations was due to measurement variance; 74.8 percent was due to process variance. Results of the seasonal division of average variance suggest that the process and measurement variances are essentially equal during open-water periods and that process variance is considerably greater than the measurement variance during backwater periods. The errors in winter discharge records significantly increased average uncertainty in the records of annual mean discharge.
