Three types of programs are described: long-term programs, which include the Federal-State cooperative program, coordination of Federal water-data acquisition, assistance to other Federal agencies, the national research program, the national water-data exchange, the water resources scientific information center, the national water-use information program, hydrologic-data collection, and international hydrology activities; topical programs, which include hazardous waste hydrology, coal and oil-shale hydrology, regional aquifer system analyses, acid rain, volcano hazards, and national water-resources conditions; and technical-assistance programs. Emphasis is on programs that will contribute to identifying, mitigating, or solving nationwide water-resources problems in the 1980's. The flow-duration sediment-rating curve method, reservoir survey data, and Pacific southwest Inter-Agency Committee (PSIAC) formula were used. Daily suspended-sediment samples were collected at USGS gaging stations on the Ylig and Ugum Rivers for one year. Intermittent samples were collected from the Talofofo River for six months. Although limited, these data are used in the flow-duration sediment-rating-curve method to estimate mean suspended-sediment yields. Fena Reservoir sedimentation data are used to test the applicability of the PSIAC formula in the three basins. Estimates of suspended-sediment yields are 467 to 845, 678 to 977, and 634 to 855 tons per year per square mile for the Talofofo, Ylig, and Ugum basins, respectively. PSIAC estimates of total sediment yield are 1,200 tons/yr/mi2 for the Talofofo, 1,385 tons/yr/mi2 for the Ylig, and 1,210 tons/yr/mi2 for the Ugum basins. These values are comparable to estimates of sediment yields from several similar basins on Oahu, Hawaii. It appears that the PSIAC method can be a useful tool in estimating sediment yields in some tropical areas. The purpose of the study was to determine differences in nutrient-loading characteristics for lakes with and without wetlands and settling ponds. The study also quantified nutrient loading to lakes on a storm, seasonal, and annual basis, complementing an inlake water-quality study of these lakes done by the Metropolitan Council.</p>\n<p>Discharge and water-quality data were collected periodically during 1981 and continuously during 1982 at 22 sites located in seven lake watersheds Bryant Lake, Lake Elmo, Fish Lake, Lake George, Lake Riley, Spring Lake, and Square Lake. Basin characteristics and land use were determined for each watershed. Recording instruments provided continuous discharge records at 14 sites and continuous rainfall records at six sites. Automatic water-quality samplers were used at lake inlets. The automatic samplers collected samples at 1- to 2-hour intervals during storms. Lake-outlet samples were collected manually on a weekly basis during flow. Samples were analyzed for suspended solids and nutrients. Atmospheric-input data were collected at eight sites from September 23 to November 1, 1982. Areas in the Coastal Plain with existing or potential saltwater intrusion are delineated. Data collected through 1981 indicate that freshwater aquifers in parts of seven Coastal-Plain counties are contaminated by saline water. Encroachment of saltwater into freshwater aquifers in the Sayreville area of Middlesex County and in the lower peninsula of Cape May County has been reported for about 40 years and is now more extensive. Several other areas are experiencing limited saltwater intrusion. These include the Keyport-Union Beach area in Monmouth County, areas along the Delaware estuary in Gloucester and Salem Counties, and at Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights in Ocean County. The continuing updip movement of saline water in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is also threatening existing freshwater supplies in the interior areas of Gloucester and Salem Counties. Saltwater intrusion has resulted from extensive ground-water withdrawals. The resultant freshwater head declines have caused reversals in the natural hydraulic gradients that permit inland movement of saline water from adjacent saltwater bodies. The program incorporates an efficient algorithm devised by Parker (1912) which uses the fast Fourier transform to calculate potential field anomalies. Input is a rectangular grid in a projected coordinate system which contains values describing topography (elevations and depths in meters) or surface load (mass in g/cm2). Output is a rectangular grid of values of the gravitational attraction of the root in milligals (mGal). A strategy is outlined for combining this output with published results describing the attraction of the root beyond 166.7 km, for upward continuing the total attraction to appropriate observation elevations, and for subtracting the result from Bouguer gravity data to produce an isostatic residual gravity map. In addition, it serves as a user's manual for the authors' mapping system. Procedures were developed which allow commodity specialists to enter deposit information, retrieve selected data, and plot deposit symbols in any geographic area within the conterminous United States. The mapping system uses both micro- and mainframe computers. The microcomputer is used to input and retrieve information, thus minimizing computing charges. The mainframe computer is used to generate map plots which are printed by a Calcomp plotter. \r\n\r\nSelector V data base system is employed for input and retrieval on the microcomputer. A general mapping program (Genmap) was written in FORTRAN for use on the mainframe computer. Genmap can plot fifteen symbol types (for point locations) in three sizes. The user can assign symbol types to data items interactively. Individual map symbols can be labeled with a number or the deposit name. Stream-sampling sites were upstream and downstream from potential, existing, or historical coal-mining areas. Field water-quality measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen were also made to aid in assessing stream water-quality conditions. The purpose of the study was to describe and quantify the benthic invertebrate communities in selected streams in coal-mining areas. Sampling was conducted on a near bimonthly basis throughout the growing season, beginning in April and May 1980, and continuing through September 1981. This report describes the methods of data collection and presents qualitative and quantitative results of benthic invertebrates and associated water-quality data. The data collection was part of a study to determine the effectiveness of agricultural best-management practices designed to improve rural water quality. The study is part of a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration project undertaken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Continuous streamflow data were collected at three gaging stations during March through September 1982. Suspended-sediment samples were collected at two of the gaging stations. Samples were collected manually at weekly intervals. During periods of rapidly changing stage, samples were collected at 30-minute to 12-hour intervals by stage-activated automatic samplers. The samples were analyzed for suspendedsediment concentration and particle-size distribution. Particlesize distributions were also determined for one set of bedmaterial samples collected at each sediment-sampling site. The streamflow and suspended-sediment-concentration data were used to compute records of mean-daily flow, mean-daily suspended-sediment concentration, and daily suspended-sediment discharge. These units are major confining layers in the upper part of the groundwater reservoir along Long Island 's south shore. Where present, they influence the groundwater flow patterns locally. The ' 20-foot ' clay, previously mapped in Nassau County only, was found in test borings in Suffolk County also. Its surface altitude ranges from 20 to 40 ft below NGVD (National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929); thickness ranges from 0 to 30 ft. The surface altitude of the Gardiners Clay ranges from 40 to 120 ft below NGVD; thickness ranges from 0 to 90 ft. Previously known discontinuities in both formations are more accurately delineated, and several new discontinuities have been inferred from the new data. The Matawan Group-Magothy Formation undifferentiated the Monmouth Group, and the Jameco Gravel directly underlie the Gardiners Clay. Revised surface altitudes of these formations are depicted on maps and cross sections of the south-shore area.
