Geochemical arguments, including reaction mechanisms, are used to support these findings. Carbon-, hydrogen-, and oxygen-isotope data show that much of the recharge in the area occurred during late Wisconsin time. Absence of ground-water recharge prior to late Pleistocene is considered to indicate that either climatic conditions were unfavorable for recharge or that ground-water velocities were such that they transported this earlier recharge away from the study aea. These studies are now in progress in Austin and Houston. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year. The study in the San Antonio area was completed at the end of the 1981 water year.</p><p>The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data. The Texas Department of Water Resources ended its participation in the project in 1979, and the city of San Antonio funded the program through the 1981 water year.</p><p>The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the city of San Antonio and the U.S Geological Survey.</p><p>The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178720, Lorence Creek at Thousand Oaks Blvd., San Antonio, station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio, are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Hater Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. Station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent watersheds. The West Elm watershed is still predominately rural but is undergoing extensive urbanization in some areas. It presents 18 charts giving newly developed relations for acceleration, velocity, and duration versus site earthquake intensity for near- and far-field hard and soft sites and earthquakes having magnitudes above and below 7. The material for this report is based on procedures developed at the Waterways Experiment Station. Although these procedures are suggested primarily for large dams, they may also be applicable for other facilities. \r\n\r\nBecause no standard procedure exists for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams, a number of precautions are presented to guide users. The selection of earthquake motions is dependent on which one of two types of engineering analyses are performed. A pseudostatic analysis uses a coefficient usually obtained from an appropriate contour map; whereas, a dynamic analysis uses either accelerograms assigned to a site or specified respunse spectra. Each type of analysis requires significantly different input motions. All selections of design motions must allow for the lack of representative strong motion records, especially near-field motions from earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater, as well as an enormous spread in the available data. Limited data must be projected and its spread bracketed in order to fill in the gaps and to assure that there will be no surprises. Because each site may have differing special characteristics in its geology, seismic history, attenuation, recurrence, interpreted maximum events, etc., as integrated approach gives best results. Each part of the site investigation requires a number of decisions. In some cases, the decision to use a 'least ork' approach may be suitable, simply assuming the worst of several possibilities and testing for it. Because there are no standard procedures to follow, multiple approaches are useful. For example, peak motions at a site may be obtained from several methods that involve magnitude of earthquake, distance from source, and corresponding motions; or, alternately, peak motions may be assigned from other correlations based on earthquake intensity. Various interpretations exist to account for duration, recurrence, effects of site conditions, etc. Comparison of the various interpretations can be very useful. Probabilities can be assigned; however, they can present very serious problems unless appropriate care is taken when data are extrapolated beyond their data base. In making deterministic judgments, probabilistic data can provide useful guidance in estimating the uncertainties of the decision. \r\n\r\nThe selection of a design ground motion for large dams is based in the end on subjective judgments which should depend, to an important extent, on the consequences of failure. Usually, use of a design value of ground motion representing a mean plus one standard deviation of possible variation in the mean of the data puts one in a conservative position. If failure presents no hazard to life, lower values of design ground motion may be justified, providing there are cost benefits and the risk is acceptable to the owner. Where a large hazard to life exists (i.e., a dam above an urbanized area) one may wish to use values of design ground motion that approximate the very worst case. Areas in the Coastal Plain with existing or potential saltwater intrusion are delineated. Data collected through 1981 indicate that freshwater aquifers in parts of seven Coastal-Plain counties are contaminated by saline water. Encroachment of saltwater into freshwater aquifers in the Sayreville area of Middlesex County and in the lower peninsula of Cape May County has been reported for about 40 years and is now more extensive. Several other areas are experiencing limited saltwater intrusion. These include the Keyport-Union Beach area in Monmouth County, areas along the Delaware estuary in Gloucester and Salem Counties, and at Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights in Ocean County. The continuing updip movement of saline water in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is also threatening existing freshwater supplies in the interior areas of Gloucester and Salem Counties. Saltwater intrusion has resulted from extensive ground-water withdrawals. The resultant freshwater head declines have caused reversals in the natural hydraulic gradients that permit inland movement of saline water from adjacent saltwater bodies. The base flow values are used in estimating recharge to the sand aquifer. Relations developed between mean annual base flow and stream discharge at the 60- and 65-percent streamflow duration point can be used to approximate mean annual base flow in lieu of hydrograph separation methods for base flows above 10 cu ft/s. Base flow recession curves were used to derive estimates of hydraulic diffusivity of the aquifer which was converted to transmissivity using estimated specific yield. These base-flow-derived transmissivities are in general agreement with transmissivities derived from well data. The shape of flow duration curves of streams is affected by the lithology of the Coastal Plain sediments. Steep flow duration curves appear to be associated with basins underlain by clay or chalk where a low percentage of the discharge is base flow while flatter curves appear to be associated with basins Pequea Creek, a tributary to the Susquehanna River, drains a 154-square mile agricultural area in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Previous studies defined the Pequea Creek basin as a contributor of sediment, nutrients, and pesticides from nonpoint sources to the Susquehanna River. \r\n\r\nThe purpose of this intensive watershed investigation was to determine the effects of various land uses on water quality of receiving streams. Streamflow was measured and monthly base-flow samples and water-weighted composite storm samples were analyzed for suspended sediment, nutrients, organic carbon, and triazine herbicides. Constituent loadings were calculated to quantify their discharge from the entire Pequea Creek basin and from four specific subbasins: forest, cornfield, rural residential, and pasture. Soil samples were analyzed for nutrients and selected herbicides, and land use and application data were collected to determine the source of loadings. Precipitation amounts and chemistry were also measured. \r\n\r\nPrecipitation and streamflow were below average for much of the investigation period, May 1979 to December 1980. The annual precipitation for 1980 was 10 inches below normal, with drought conditions the last half of the year. \r\n\r\nDuring base flow, the highest concentrations of individual constituents generally observed were: 4.0 milligrams per liter total organic nitrogen and 1.4 milligrams per liter total phosphorus from the downstream pasture site; 24 milligrams per liter total nitrate nitrogen and 3.9 micrograms per liter total atrazine from the cornfield site; and 0.5 micrograms per liter total prometone, and 2.3 micrograms per liter total simazine from the residential site. Nearly all total nitrate nitrogen concentrations from the cornfield site during base flow were about double the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1977) criterion of 10 milligrams per liter. The highest constituent concentrations found in composite storm samples were nearly all in samples from the cornfield site. \r\n\r\nThe highest concentrations found were: 16,000 milligrams per liter suspended sediment, 54 milligrams per liter total organic nitrogen, 41 milligrams per liter total nitrate nitrogen, 19 milligrams per liter total phosphorus, and 200 micrograms per liter total atrazine. The highest concentrations found in composite storm samples for total prometone was 6.4 micrograms per liter at the residential site and for total simazine was 4.8 micrograms per liter at the downstream pasture site. \r\n\r\nGenerally, concentrations of all the constituents, except nitrate, were higher during storms than during base flow at all sites. Total concentrations of the constituents increase during storms predominantly due to increases in suspended concentrations. The highest storm concentrations of most constituents occurred at the cornfield site. Fertilizer and herbicide applications increase the available sources of nutrients and herbicides for transport to the stream. The highest phosphorus, atrazine, and suspended-sediment concentrations at the cornfield site occurred during intense storms soon after application and planting. \r\n\r\nConstituent yields (tons per square mile) from storms, about evenly distributed throughout the basin, were compared from the other specific land-use sites to the forest site, which represents a relatively undisturbed land use. During storms, yields for suspended sediment, total organic nitrogen, and total phosphorus were highest for the pasture and lowest for the forest site. Total nitrate-nitrogen yields were highest for the cornfield and about the same for the forest and residential sites. These water-quality data were collected prior to September 30, 1981, and are available in computer files of the U.S. Geological Survey. The principal water-bearing rocks in Kentucky were combined into 10 major groups to aid in data summary preparation and general description of the ground-water quality of the State. Ground water in Kentucky is generally fresh near the outcrop of the rocks comprising the aquifer. Slightly saline to briny water occurs at variable depths beneath the freshwater. Preparation of quadrilinear diagrams revealed three principal geochemical processes in the aquifers of Kentucky: (1) mixing of freshwater and saline water in an interface zone; (2) dedolomitization of the Devonian and Silurian and Lower Mississippian carbonate rocks; (3) sodium for calcium exchange in the freshwater sections of many of the sandstone-shale aquifers. A number of errors and deficiencies were found in the data base. The principal deficiencies were: (1) very few complete analyses which included important field measurements; (2) inadequate definition of the chemistry of the freshwater-saline water interface zone throughout much of the State; (3) no analyses of stable isotopes and dissolved gases; (4) fewer than 10 analyses of most trace metals, radionuclides, and man-made organic chemicals; and (5) no data on bacteria in ground water from any aquifer in the State. Minimum, median, and maximum concentrations and percentage of samples above the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for nine chemical constituents for which more than 3% of the observed concentrations exceeded the ' maximum contaminate level ' for that constituent. The State was divided into 14 ground-water regions based on water-use and physiographic characteristics. The scope of this study was limited to the assessment of conventional recoverable petroleum resources occurring in the designated and proposed Wilderness Lands of the Western United States that are administered under four Federal agencies: Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), National Park Service (NPS), and Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). \r\n\r\nThe total area of the study included approximately 74 million acres of Wilderness Lands in these 11 Western States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The 74 million acres represent 31 percent of the total Federal lands within these 11 Western States. Approximately 49 percent of all the lands in these States are federally owned. \r\n\r\nThe objective of this study was to assemble through various means all the available pertinent information that could be brought together within the USGS and integrate these data into a computer-based digital cartographic data system that was focused upon the single issue of reviewing the known geological and geophysical data to determine the geologic characteristics favorable or unfavorable for the occurrence of petroleum resources in these Wilderness Lands. In a joint effort in the USGS between the Geologic Division (GD) and the National Mapping Division (NMD) all of the mappable information used in this study was prepared and processed by using digital cartographic techniques. These include digitizing the location and boundaries of the Wilderness Lands; acreage calculations; the boundaries of the USGS petroleum provinces; and the geologic and tectonic boundaries within each petroleum province and State. In addition, searches were conducted on well data files which provided the locations and geologic information on over 5,000 wells drilled within or immediately adjacent to the Wilderness Lands. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of all the geologic characteristics favorable or unfavorable for petroleum occurrence in conjunction with the geologic settings for the Wilderness Lands scattered within the framework of the petroleum provinces was performed by a team of geologists on each of the wilderness tracts. The geologic characteristics reviewed for each tract included the presence or absence of the following: adequate source beds and reservoir rocks; adequate trapping mechanisms; favorable thermal and maturation histories; presence of petroleum seeps or adjacent wells with shows or production; and the presence of favorable sedimentary rock sections underlying volcanic terrane or faulted and overthrust areas. \r\n\r\nA description of the geology and geologic framework is provided for each State along with an explanation of the interpretative geology and evaluation of the petroleum potential within the locale of each of the wilderness tracts. \r\n\r\nThe assessment of the petroleum resources on the Wilderness Lands was completed in two separate stages. In the first stage the geologists evaluated the geological characteristics for the favorability or lack of favorability for the occurrence of oil and natural gas within each wilderness tract and assigned a qualitative rating for each tract's potential for the occurrence of recoverable oil and gas resources. In the second stage in evaluating the petroleum potential for the wilderness tracts, an effort was made to arrive at a quantitative assessment within the framework of the USGS's latest published resource estimates which are made on a province basis. The geologic characteristics evaluated for the favorability of petroleum occurrence within each of the clusters of wilderness tracts were the determining factors for the subjective assessments of the petroleum potential for each wilderness tract occurring within the respective basin or province. High aeroradioactivity is associated with potassium-rich granitic plutons, muscovite-rich gneisses, schists, and metavolcanic rocks; positive gravity and magnetic anomalies are associated with gabbro plutons; and negative gravity anomalies are associated with granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nAt the west side of the slate belt, the Tillery phyllite is interpreted as having undergone progressive metamorphism. The underlying Uwharrie Formation extends into the Charlotte belt where it is mapped as metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models of the Carolina slate belt indicate that it is a synform containing a wedge of metasedimentary and volcanoclastic rock on plutonic basement. The basement is exposed in the adjacent Charlotte belt antiform. \r\n\r\nThe northern Charlotte belt contains mainly plutonic rocks which have been divided into 3 supergroups of plutons based upon chemistry, mineralogy, texture, and age. They are: \r\n\r\n1. Old Plutonic supergroup - plutons 545-490 m.y. that are medium to coarse-grained tonalite, quartz diorite, and granodiorites. \r\n\r\n2. Concord-Salisbury supergroup -- plutons 426-350 m.y. which form sheet-like intrusions of differentiated gabbro; local volcanic centers with ring complexes 13 km in diameter that suggest magma chambers 0 - 8 km deep; smaller bodies of diorite, monzonite, and syenite; and small Salisbury type granodiorites. \r\n\r\n3. Landis supergroup -- plutons 350-280 m.y. that are usually very coarse-grained, porphyritic, 'big feldspar,' potassium-rich granites. \r\n\r\nThe Mecklenburg-Weddington gabbro complex of the Concord-Salisbury supergroup, the largest feature in the study area, contains three large gabbro plutons. The gabbro intruded old Plutonic complex rocks and could-have produced the metamorphic reaction K-feldspar + sillimanite quartz + muscovite reflected in the mineral assemblage of adjacent felsic metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models indicate a lopolith 3.5- to 4.5-km thick with a 2 km sill extending to the northeast. Positive magnetic and gravity anomalies suggest the lopolith is. connected with the Concord gabbro complex to the northeast. \r\n\r\nThe sheet-like intrusions of Concord-Salisbury group gabbros, forming the core of the composite 5atholith, have medium-grained Salisbury type granodiorite above, and coarser-grained Landis granite below. The position of the supergroups as presently exposed may be a function of level of erosion versus level of emplacement. The plutons in the composite batholith span 200 m.y. according to current age data and are arranged with the oldest at the top and the youngest at the bottom. However, Rb-Sr and K-At ages in the Piedmont are more likely to reflect age of crustal uplift than the age of metamorphism or intrusion. These samples are from the Stark Shale Member of the Dennis Limestone of Upper Pennsylvanian age, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. The data confirm previous results (Hosterman and Whitlow, 1981) which showed that a limited relationship of color value to organic carbon exists for shales containing about 7 percent or less organic carbon. For samples with 7 percent or more organic carbon, color values are nearly all the same.
