Drill hole data provided by the Arkansas Geological Commission is used in the synthesis and interpretation. Areas containing lignite of potential resource value are also delineated. \r\n\r\nTo illustrate the regional stratigraphic framework of Crowleys Ridge, a cross section was constructed from logs of selected oil and gas test wells, along or adjacent to the north-south trending ridge over a distance of about 115 miles. This section reveals that lignite-bearing Tertiary formations dip gently southward along the ridge. The Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group forms the bedrock in the northern part of the ridge and successively younger bedrock of the Eocene Claiborne and Jackson Groups is identified in the central and southern part of the ridge. Crowleys Ridge is mantled with alluvium and loess of Quaternary age, and sand and gravel beds of the Lafayette Formation of Pliocene (?) age that unconformably overlie the Paleocene and Eocene rocks. The thickness of lignite-bearing sedimentary deposits ranges from 830 feet in the north to 2,480 feet in the south. The Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson Groups of Paleocene and Eocene age are believed to be fluvial-deltaic in origin. \r\n\r\nThe detailed vertical and horizontal stratigraphic characteristics and distribution of lignite beds in the sediments were determined by constructing seven cross sections from lithologic and geophysical logs of the lignite investigations on Crowleys Ridge by the Arkansas Geological Commission and private companies. Correlation and interpretation of the lignite-bearing strata reveal ten lignite beds of resource potential. These lignite beds range from a few inches to 9.5 ft in thickness and are assigned to stratigraphic intervals that are designated as zone 1 through 7. Zone 1 is near the middle of the Wilcox Group and zone 7 is near the middle of the overlying Claiborne Group. Some of these lignite beds are correlated over distances as much as 30 miles. Other lignite beds thin to a few inches thick and disappear within short distances. Four areas are delineated on Crowleys Ridge that contain one or more lignite beds each 2.5 feet or more thick. Strippable lignite is limited to 300 feet in this area, therefore, all holes were drilled to 300 feet or less. \r\n\r\nChemical analyses of eight lignite samples from Crowleys Ridge are on record with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Resources Data System. Two of the samples are from the Wilcox Group, and six are from the Claiborne Group, but the lignite beds from which the samples were taken are unidentified. However, the analyses are believed to be representative of the lignite within the lignite-bearing sequence. The two Wilcox samples had moisture values of 36.3 and 40.1 percent; ash, 30.5 and 20.5 percent (U.S. Bureau of Mines); sulfur content, 0.3 and 1.0 percent; and Btu values, 3,910 and 4,590 on an as received basis. The six Claiborne samples had moisture values ranging from 34.7 to 43.7 percent; ash from 11.9-28.2 percent (USBM); sulfur content, 0.3-3 percent; and Btu values, 3,400 to 5,160. \r\n\r\nU.S. Geological Survey average ash content for the eight samples was 36.22 percent, and the major oxides are SiO2 (60.75 percent), Al2O3 (15.23 percent), CaO (6.96 percent), Fe2O3 (6.65 percent), and SO3 (5.64 percent). No anomalous values were recorded for the trace element content. \r\n\r\nLignite is not currently mined on Crowleys Ridge. It has potential for use as a fuel for direct firing of boilers to generate electricity. It also has potential for gasification to produce pipeline gas, and for liquefaction to produce fuel oil. More drilling and analyses are needed to better define the quantity and quality of lignite beds within the four significant areas with resource potential and to determine the extent of lignite beds 2.5 ft or more thick that occur in several isolated areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83609","usgsCitation":"Meissner, C., 1983, Stratigraphic framework and distribution of lignite on Crowleys Ridge, Arkansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-609, 33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83609.","productDescription":"33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144091,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38149,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38150,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38151,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38152,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38153,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38154,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38155,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38156,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38157,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38158,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6af76b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meissner, Charles R.","contributorId":27863,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meissner","given":"Charles R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These data indicate broad crustal structures and compositional variations that are marked by magnetization and density contrasts. The focus is on anomalies that may signal large-dimension controlling structures for the emplacement of economic mineral deposits. An example is a continuous, quasi-linear, north-trending gradient in both gravity and magnetic data located west of Cripple Creek area along long. 105? 30? W. This trend correlates with two mineral deposits of the Southern Rocky Mountains Front Range. It also correlates in part with an area of volcanic rock and with a mapped fault complex (Elkhorn-Currant Creek-Else-Westcliffe). The trend is interpreted to indicate a continuous crustal fault-system, although exposures of this system are discontinuous between areas of alluvium and volcanic-rock cover. \r\n\r\nSimilar geophysical trends exist in the Silver City to Tyrone area, where northeast-and northwest-trending anomalies appear to be marked by intrusion and mineralization. In this area, northwest-trending alluvial basins favor the use of geophysics to infer economically accessible but hidden bedrock whose association with exposed mineralization seems possible. An example of an inferred broad and relatively shallow, but hidden bedrock complex in association with more areally-limited mineralization is the Victorio Mountains area about 34 mi (55 km) south-southeast of Tyrone, New Mexico. The mineralization is within faulted sediments whose outcrop covers a small portion of the geophysical anomaly-complex.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological During this same time population increased from about 150 million to about 230 million. Data on consumptive use are not available for the first decade of the period; however, from 1960 to 1980, consumptive use increased from 61 bgd to 100 bgd. \r\n\r\nFrom 1950 to 1980, fresh surface-water withdrawals increased from 140 bgd to 290 bgd and fresh ground-water withdrawals increased from 34 bgd to 88 bgd. Withdrawals of saline surface water increased from 10 bgd in 1950 to 71 bgd in 1980. In 1980, 91 percent of the saline surface water withdrawn was used in thermoelectric power plants. \r\n\r\nWithdrawals of water for domestic purposes nationwide increased from 16 bgd in 1960 to 25 bgd in 1980. The Northeastern States still are the largest users of water for domestic purposes; however, domestic withdrawals in that region declined from 9.6 bgd in 1975 to 8.8 bgd in 1980. Population in that region also showed a slight decline from 1970 to 1980. \r\n\r\nIrrigation withdrawals nationwide increased from 89 bgd in 1950 to 150 bgd in 1980. The Western States continue to be the largest user of irrigation water, 136 bgd in 1980. Irrigation accounted for 81 percent of the total consumptive use for the Nation in 1980. \r\n\r\nIndustrial withdrawals (exclusive of thermoelectric power generation) increased from 44 bgd in 1960 to about 56 bgd in 1980. The Northeast Region continues to withdraw the largest amount of water for industrial purposes, although withdrawals declined steadily from 33 bgd in 1965 to 27 bgd in 1980. \r\n\r\nTotal withdrawals for thermoelectric power generation increased from about 99 bgd in 1960 to about 210 bgd in 1980. During that period, saline surface water withdrawals increased from 26 bgd to 71 bgd. Thermoelectric plants accounted for 84 percent of saline surface water withdrawals in 1960 compared to 91 percent in 1980. Withdrawals for thermoelectric power generation continue to be the largest in the Northeast, ll3 bgd in 1980, where many of the major industrial and population centers are located. \r\n\r\nAgriculture (nonirrigation) water withdrawals nationwide increased from 1.6 bgd in 1960 to about 2.2 bgd in 1980. Withdrawals for this purpose in 1980 were about evenly divided between the West and East.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83207","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Mann, W., Solley, W.B., and Chase, E.B., 1983, Summary of water withdrawals in the United States, 1950-80: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-207, 22 p. ill., 1 map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83207.","productDescription":"22 p. ill., 1 map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156847,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0207/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53015,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0207/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4881e4b07f02db51670d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mann, William B.","contributorId":21985,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mann","given":"William B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Solley, Wayne B.","contributorId":61409,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Solley","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chase, Edith B.","contributorId":11192,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chase","given":"Edith","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The lack of current-meter measurements, coupled with backwater conditions, makes definition of a single stage-discharge relation impossible. However, limit curves can be defined that would encompass such a relation. Backwater is defined as water backed up or retarded in its course as compared with water flowing under normal or natural conditions. This results in a rise in stage above normal water level while the discharge remains unaffected. Backwater is usually caused by temporary obstruction(s) to the flow downstream. Backwater at Gainesville Dam is due to large tributary inflow and return of flood plain flows to the main channel during recessions. The discharges obtained from 105 computations of flow through the dam for the tailwater and 59 for the pool were plotted versus stage. These plots illustrate, by the scatter of these data points, the variations in backwater. Curves were drawn to envelope the extreme plot patterns showing possible ranges of several feet in stage for any given discharge for both the pool and the tailwater.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83942","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Nelson, G.H., and Ming, C.O., 1983, Preliminary stage-discharge relations for Tombigbee River at Gainesville Dam, near Gainesville, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-942, 16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83942.","productDescription":"16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156317,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53211,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53212,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53213,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53214,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b48f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, G. Selected wells illustrate the effects that changes in recharge and pumpage have had on the various groundwater resources in the State. Daily mean water levels are shown in hydrographs for 1982. Monthly means are shown for the 10-yr period 1973 and 1982. Mean annual water levels ranged from 10 ft higher to 1 ft lower in 1982 than in 1981. This is a significant reversal of the downward trend of the past few years. Water quality samples are collected periodically throughout Georgia and analyzed as part of areal and regional groundwater studies. Along the coast, chloride concentrations have remained stable in the Savannah area, but invasion of brackish water into the aquifer has increased the chloride concentration at Brunswick. A barium halo that is associated with all of these deposits formed from secondary processes. Calcium and strontium were also enriched in the ores by secondary processes. Comparison of the chemical characteristics of the redistributed deposits in the Church Rock district to the primary deposits in the Grants uranium region indicates that calcium, manganese, strontium, yttrium, copper, iron, magnesium, molybdenum, lead, selenium, and vanadium are separated from uranium during redistribution of the deposits in the Church Rock area. Comparisons of the chemical characteristics of the Church Rock deposits and the secondary deposits at Ambrosia Lake suggest some differences in the processes that were involved in the genesis of the redistributed deposits in these two areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83380","usgsCitation":"Spirakis, C., and Pierson, C.T., 1983, Comparison of the chemical characteristics of the uranium deposits of the Morrison Formation in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-380, 22 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83380.","productDescription":"22 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155861,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0380/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50578,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0380/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adeb4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spirakis, C.S.","contributorId":46088,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spirakis","given":"C.S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183652,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pierson, C. The temperature regime during the Wisconsin glacial age, from before about 45,000 years ago until about 12,000 years ago, was characterized by lower temperatures during all seasons. Wisconsin maximum (about 18,000 years before present) winter temperatures were at least 6 deg. Celsius below those of the present, and the relative decrease in summer temperature was as much as 8 deg. Celsius. The data provide evidence for a precipitation regime drier than that proposed by many studies. The maximum estimated increase in average annual precipitation during the full-glacial period is 40 percent above current precipitation. The increase in temperature signaling the end of the Wisconsin glacial age may have begun as early as about 16,000 years ago. The oldest record of desert scrub vegetation from the Nevada Test Site area dates to about 15,000 years ago. By 10,000 years before present, average annual temperatures may have approximated present values, although seasonal temperature and precipitation regimes probably differed from those of today. Climate changes during the last 10,000 years have been relatively minor variations in a warm, dry climatic regime. Probably future climatic changes include a brief but pronounced warm period within the next 500 years, followed by a protracted transition to the next glacial age during the next 10,000 years. Inherent dangers, associated with water analysis and research laboratories where hazardous samples, materials, and equipment are used, must be minimized to protect workers, buildings, and equipment. Managers, supervisors, analysts, and laboratory support personnel each have specific responsibilities to reduce hazards by maintaining a safe work environment. General rules of conduct and safety practices that involve personal protection, laboratory practices, chemical handling, compressed gases handling, use of equipment, and overall security must be practiced by everyone at all levels. \r\n\r\nRoutine and extensive inspections of all laboratories must be made regularly by qualified people. Personnel should be trained thoroughly and repetitively. Special hazards that may involve exposure to carcinogens, cryogenics, or radiation must be given special attention, and specific rules and operational procedures must be established to deal with them. Helium concentrations in 510 samples ranged from -147 to 441 ppb He with respect to ambient air. The median helium value for the study area was 36 ppb. Concentrations of more than 100 ppb He, and less than -20 ppb He, occur more commonly in the Ely Quadrangle and are especially numerous in the western one-half of this quadrangle. The data are presented both in figures and tables, and some of the geologic factors that may affect the helium distribution are discussed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83589","usgsCitation":"Reimer, G., and Bowles, C., 1983, Helium concentrations in soil gas of the Ely and Delta 1° x 2° quadrangles, Basin and Range Province: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-589, Report: 25 p.; 2 Plates: 33.65 × 20.69 inches and 34.38 × 21.07 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83589.","productDescription":"Report: 25 p.; 2 Plates: 33.65 × 20.69 inches and 34.38 × 21.07 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":391476,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14116.htm"},{"id":50136,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0589/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":50138,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0589/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":50137,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0589/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153309,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0589/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Ely and Delta 1° x 2° quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -112,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -112,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              39\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635dac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reimer, G.M.","contributorId":59800,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimer","given":"G.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182934,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bowles, C.G.","contributorId":14369,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bowles","given":"C.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182933,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The area varies in altitude from less than 4,000 to more than 10,000 feet, and is comprised chiefly of plateaus, benches, and terraces that are dissected by deep, narrow canyons. Principal streams draining the area are the Virgin, Sevier, Escalante, and Paria Rivers, and Coal, Kanab, and Wahweap Creeks.</p><p>Most of the data included in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1980 to September 1982. They were collected as part of a hydrologic study in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to evaluate potential impacts of coal mining on the area's water resources. The results of that study are to be published in a separate report.</p><p>Several earlier coal-related hydrologic studies have been made in the Alton and Kolob coal-fields area. Hydrologic data collected during those studies may be found in the following reports: Goode (1964, 1966), Sandberg (1979), and Cordova (1981). Data collected at the streamflow-gaging stations shown on plate 1 are published separately in annual reports of the U.S. Geological Survey. Information about the availability of these data is given in table 8.</p><p>The writer extends thanks to Judy Steiger and Dave Darby (former employees of the U.S. Geological Survey) for their contribution to this report. Comparison of the Smith Lake data with information from other primary deposits in the Grants uranium region and elsewhere in the Morrison Formation of the Colorado Plateau suggests that these elements, with the possible exceptions of zirconium and gallium and with the probable addition of aluminum and magnesium, are typically associated with primary, tabular uranium deposits. Chemical differences between the Ruby and Mariano Lake deposits are consistent with the interpretation that the Ruby deposit has been more affected by post-mineralization oxidizing solutions than has the Mariano Lake deposit.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83818","usgsCitation":"Pierson, C.T., Spirakis, C., and Robertson, J., 1983, Comparison of abundances of chemical elements in mineralized and unmineralized sandstone of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation, Smith Lake District, Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-818, 47 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83818.","productDescription":"47 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50002,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d489","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierson, C.
