Important features of this program include: any combination of logarithmic and linear axes, optional automatic scaling and numbering of the axes, multiple-curve plots, character or drawn symbol-point plotting, optional cartridge-tape data input and plot-format storage, optional spline fitting for smooth curves, and built-in data-editing options. The program is run while the Tektronix is not connected to any large auxiliary computer, although data from files on an auxiliary computer easily can be transferred to data-cartridge for later plotting. The user is led through the plot-construction process by a series of questions and requests for data input. Five example plots are presented to illustrate program capability and the sequence of program operation. These resources are being studied along the continental margins of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico in keeping with the mission of the U.S. Geological Survey to survey the geologic structures, mineral resources, and products of the national domain.'(Organic Act of 1879). \r\n\r\nAn essential corollary to these resource studies is the study of potential geologic hazards that may be associated with offshore resource exploration and exploitation. In cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Geological Survey, through its Atlantic-Gulf of Mexico Marine Geology Program, carries out extensive research to evaluate hazards from sediment mobility, shallow gas, and slumping and to acquire information on the distribution and concentration of trace metals and biogenic and petroleum-derived hydrocarbons in sea-floor sediments. All these studies arc providing needed background information, including information on pollutant dispersal, on the nearshore, estuarine, and lacustrine areas that may be near pipeline and nuclear powerplant sites. Users of these data include the Congress, many Federal agencies, the coastal States, private industry, academia, and the concerned public. \r\n\r\nThe results of the regional structural, stratigraphic, and resource studies carried out under the Atlantic-Gulf of Mexico Marine Geology Program have been used by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Land Management to select areas for future leasing and to aid in the evaluation of tracts nominated for leasing. Resource studies have concentrated mostly on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf frontier areas. Geologic detailing of five major basins along the U.S. Atlantic margin, where sediments are as much as 14 km thick, have been revealed by 25,000 km of 24-and 48-channel common-depth-point seismic data, 187,000 km of acromagnetic data, and 39,000 km of gravity data, plus 10,000 samples and logs obtained from U.S. Geological Survey and industry drilling (for example, coreholes of the Atlantic Slope Program, Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling, Continental Offshore Stratigraphic Tests, and the Atlantic Margin Coring Program). A sedimentary section of Jurassic and Cretaceous age grades from terrigenous clastic rocks nearshore to carbonate rocks offshore; this section is part of an extensive buried bank-platform complex that could contain large reserves of natural gas and oil. \r\n\r\nThe volume of sediment deposited offshore far exceeds the volume deposited onshore where extensive accumulations of oil, gas, and minerals have been found. Commercial exploratory drilling offshore thus far has been limited to the Baltimore Canyon Trough area off New Jersey, where at least two holes have found gas; leasing has taken place in the Southeast Georgia Embayment, where drilling was scheduled to begin in 1979, and is imminent in the Georges Bank area off New England. In addition, hydrogeologic and hydrochemical data obtained from the drilling studies have delineated freshwater-bearing submarine extensions of land aquifers that are important coastal ground-water resources. \r\n\r\nHazards in the Georges Bank area include sand mobility associated with strong currents and storm-driven waves; high concentrations of suspended sediment in the water column that, when mixed with spilled oil, may sink to the bottom; and slumping along the upper slope. In the Baltimore Canyon, high sediment mobility accompanies major winter storms, and slumped material may cover as much as 20 percent of the upper slope. Potentially unstable slope areas are being studied in great detail to provide data on timing, triggering mechanisms, and rates of sediment movement. In the Southeast Georgia Embayment and Blake Plateau Basin, strong Gulf Stream flow poses a major problem to all offshore operations. \r\n\r\nIn the Gulf o","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir870","usgsCitation":"Folger, D.W., and Needell, S.W., 1983, U.S. Geological Survey program of offshore resource and geoenvironmental studies, Atlantic-Gulf of Mexico region, from September 1, 1976, to December 31, 1978: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 870, 67 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir870.","productDescription":"67 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117403,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0870/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31028,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0870/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ae4b07f02db6123db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Folger, David W.","contributorId":96663,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Folger","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":147869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Needell, Sally W.","contributorId":106874,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Needell","given":"Sally","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147870,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Data collection included geologic sampling and coring, borehole geophysical logging, packer testing, water-level measuring, water-quality sampling, and aquifer testing. In the study area, the Tertiary limestone aquifer system is about 1,300 feet thick and is confined and overlain by about 610 feet of clastic sediments. The aquifer system consists of limestone, dolomite, and minor evaporites and has high porosity and permeability. A 4-day continuous discharge aquifer test was conducted, from which a transmissivity of about 1 million feet squared per day and a storage coefficient of 0.0001 were calculated. Water from the upper part of the aquifer is of a calcium bicarbonate type. The deeper highly mineralized zone produces a sodium bicarbonate type water in which concentrations of magnesium, sulfate, chloride, sodium, and some trace metals increase with depth. The variables monitored were water temperature in the main channel and major tributaries, wind velocity, wet-bulb and dry-bulb air temperature, total hemispherical incoming radiation, total incoming shortwave radiation, discharge in the main channel and major tributaries, and average velocity and axial dispersion coefficients in the main channel. Data were collected at 10 stations, during water years 1977-81, to appraise quality conditions before construction. Average specific conductance of Black River is 101 micromhos indicating low concentrations of dissolved solids. Concentrations of common constituents and minor elements were generally low and within safe levels for aquatic life. Near-saturated dissolved oxygen concentrations and relatively low mean total organic carbon concentrations indicate little oxygen-consuming substances in Black River. Mean total nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.31 mg/L (milligrams per liter) to 0.61 mg/L. The highest concentrations were most likely due to secondary waste discharges entering the river. Nitrate was the primary form of inorganic nitrogen, mean concentrations ranged from 0.13 to 0.27 mg/L. Concentrations seem high enough to promote excessive algal growth in the proposed Hawks Mountain Reservoir. Mean concentrations of total phosphorus ranged from 0.014 to 0.112 mg/L as P. Maximum concentrations at all stations generally exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggested levels for water entering lakes and reservoirs. Mean orthophosphorus concentrations ranged from 0.005 to 0.029 mg/L, suggesting a potential for nuisance algal conditions to develop in the proposed reservoir. Mean algal growth potential concentrations ranged from 1.3 to 8.8 mg/L, falling within the moderately high to high productivity range. No pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls were detected. Comparison of the Smith Lake data with information from other primary deposits in the Grants uranium region and elsewhere in the Morrison Formation of the Colorado Plateau suggests that these elements, with the possible exceptions of zirconium and gallium and with the probable addition of aluminum and magnesium, are typically associated with primary, tabular uranium deposits. Chemical differences between the Ruby and Mariano Lake deposits are consistent with the interpretation that the Ruby deposit has been more affected by post-mineralization oxidizing solutions than has the Mariano Lake deposit.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83818","usgsCitation":"Pierson, C.T., Spirakis, C., and Robertson, J., 1983, Comparison of abundances of chemical elements in mineralized and unmineralized sandstone of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation, Smith Lake District, Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-818, 47 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83818.","productDescription":"47 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50002,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d489","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierson, C. Analysis of the coincident loop data at Sha'ab at Tare reveals that gossanous and altered rock of i0 ohm-m resistivity extends to a depth of 35 m, where there is an unweathered, dry mineralized zone of about 1 ohm-m resistivity. The model further suggests that the rocks at a depth of 55 m and below the water table are even less resistive (0. 1 ohm-m). The TDEM method successfully discriminated conductors within from those below the weathered zone at the Rabathan prospect. Conductors below the weathered zone are identified by a lack of transient response in the early part of the transient decay curve, followed by an increasing response in the middle to late parts of the transient decay curve. Results of these limited tests suggest the potential value of integrating TDEM with other geophysical tools in the Kingdom. Recommendations are made to expand these tests into a more comprehensive program that will evaluate the TDEM potential in various geologic environments that are host to mineral deposits of diverse origin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83613","usgsCitation":"Flanigan, V.J., Sadek, H., Smith, B., and Tippens, C.L., 1983, Time-domain electromagnetic tests in the Wadi Bidah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-613, ii, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83613.","productDescription":"ii, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140730,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0613/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35040,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0613/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b578","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flanigan, Vincent J.","contributorId":37735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flanigan","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156208,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sadek, Hamdy","contributorId":97491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sadek","given":"Hamdy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, Bruce 0000-0002-1643-2997","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1643-2997","contributorId":43350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bruce","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Tippens, C. Interpretation of historic water-use data was required to help water-resource planners and managers assess future trends in water use. A computerized water-use data base was constructed to facilitate generation of statistics on water-use trends and to store and retrieve data for the flow models.
\n
Ground-water use was analyzed by use category and aquifer and several trends were observed. Eighty percent of ground water currently withdrawn is from wells in the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer. Ground-water use increased from 1880 until the early 1970's, and then declined slightly in the late 1970's. Industrial use in particular declined during the 1970's as a result of conservation that was prompted by increased sewagetreatment and energy costs. The intensity of pumping has decreased within the St. Paul and Minneapolis city limits and increased outside the city limits. The seasonal variability of ground-water use became more pronounced as the percentage of water used for irrigation and air conditioning increased.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Emphasis is given to the Cape Fear River at Lock 1 near Kelly, where data are most complete. Other data included in the report were collected from the Cape Fear River at Lillington, the Haw River near the Jordan Dam, and the Deep River at Moncure. \r\n\r\nAvailable data indicate that concentrations of dissolved oxygen at study sites are almost always within U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criteria; however, on two sampling dates, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the Cape Fear at Lock 1 fell slightly below the 5.0 mg/L recommended for fish populations. Measurements of pH from all stations were frequently below the lower limit of 6.5 pH units recommended for protection of freshwater aquatic life. \r\n\r\nMajor dissolved ions detected are sodium and bicarbonate. Sodium concentration averages 8.6 mg/L and bicarbonate averages 17.5 mg/L at Lock 1. Concentrations of dissolved substances and suspended sediment decrease in the downstream direction, presumably because the more heavily populated part of the basin is near the headwaters of the system. \r\n\r\nHeavy metals, with the exceptions of cadmium and mercury, rarely exceed Environmental Protection Agency criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Concentrations of mercury in the Haw River, which exceed the recommended 0.20 mg/L needed to protect aquatic life, have frequently been reported by other authors. Several of the most toxic metals, arsenic, cadmium, and cobalt, are about five times more concentrated in water from the Haw River site than from other study sites in the basin. Iron and manganese frequently exceed North Carolina water-quality standards. \r\n\r\nAvailable nitrogen averages 1.21 mg/L and available phosphorus averages 0.21 mg/L at Lock 1. Nuisance algal growths have not been identified as a problem in the river. \r\n\r\nComparisons of water-quality data for baseline (natural) and present conditions indicate that more than 50 percent of most dissolved substances and over 80 percent of certain forms of nitrogen and phosph6rus result from development.\r\n\r\nOver the past 25 years, increases in concentrations of specific conductance, dissolved magnesium, dissolved sodium, dissolved potassium, dissolved sulfate, dissolved solids, and total nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen were detected in the Cape Fear River at Lock 1. Values for pH and dissolved silica are decreasing. Concentrations of most dissolved constituents at Lock 1 are increasing. These increases are statistically related to increases in population and manufacturing employment in the basin but are unrelated to agricultural activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83526","usgsCitation":"Crawford, J.K., 1983, Water-quality characteristics for selected sites on the Cape Fear River, North Carolina, 1955-80: Variability, loads, and trends of selected constituents: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-526, vi, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83526.","productDescription":"vi, 66 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140544,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0526/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36023,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0526/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":410128,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14090.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Cape Fear River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.904052734375,\n              33.75174787568194\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.8546142578125,\n              33.988918483762156\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.7996826171875,\n              34.17090836352573\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.53051757812499,\n              34.384246040152185\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.464599609375,\n              34.43409789359469\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.882080078125,\n              35.02099970111467\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.20068359374999,\n              35.133386854253075\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.519287109375,\n              35.209721645221386\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.7335205078125,\n              35.51881428123057\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.83239746093749,\n              35.82226734114509\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.88732910156249,\n              36.01800375871416\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.4366455078125,\n              36.146746777814364\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.03814697265625,\n              36.02189133007692\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.0628662109375,\n              35.957443980673595\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.06904602050781,\n              35.78941187118459\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.815673828125,\n              35.382332329032984\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.5684814453125,\n              35.22991591449646\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.46685791015625,\n              35.074964853989556\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.22515869140625,\n              34.9895035675793\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.88732910156249,\n              34.77545980961412\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.78021240234375,\n              34.70549341022544\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.42041015625,\n              34.31621838080741\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.22265625,\n              33.988918483762156\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.904052734375,\n              33.75174787568194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d552","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crawford, J. Annual sediment loads can be computed using these relations. For a site at Fairbanks, the annual loads in 1980 were 22.0 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 272,000 metric tons of bedload; in 1981, 27.3 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 333,000 metric tons of bedload passed the Fairbanks site. Data collected at five other locations within a 40 km reach of the river indicate very similar suspended-sediment transport relations, but bedload-transport relations vary from site to site and between 1980 and 1981. For all sites bedload is usually 1 to 1.5 percent of suspended-sediment load. Particle-size distribution for suspended sediment is similar at all six sites. Median particle size is generally in the silt range; only occasionally is it in the very fine sand range. Median particle size of bedload varied from the gravel range to the medium sand range for five of the six sampling sites in both years. At the sixth site, the most downstream location, median particle size of bedload was in the sand range. In support of these investigations, the thickness of the lava sequence at more than 300 points was estimated by spectral analysis of low-level aeromagnetic profiles utilizing the integral Fourier transform of field intensity along overlapping profile segments. The optimum length of segment for analysis was determined to be about 40 km or 600 field samples. Contributions from two discrete magnetic source ensembles could be resolved on almost all spectra computed. The depths to these ensembles correspond closely to the flight height (300 m), and, presumably, to the mean depth to basement near the center of each profile segment. The latter association was confirmed in all three cases where spectral estimates could be directly compared with basement depths measured in drill holes. \r\n\r\nThe maximum thickness estimated for the lava section is 380 m and the mean about 150 m. Data from an isopach map prepared from these results suggest that thickness variations are strongly influenced by pre-harrat, north-northwest-trending topography probably consequent on Cenozoic faulting. The thickest zones show a rough correlation with three axially-disposed volcanic shields.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83640","usgsCitation":"Blank, H.R., and Sadek, H.S., 1983, Spectral analysis of the 1976 aeromagnetic survey of Harrat Rahat, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-640, 32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83640.","productDescription":"32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140734,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35500,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35501,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35502,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. These data indicate broad crustal structures and compositional variations that are marked by magnetization and density contrasts. The focus is on anomalies that may signal large-dimension controlling structures for the emplacement of economic mineral deposits. An example is a continuous, quasi-linear, north-trending gradient in both gravity and magnetic data located west of Cripple Creek area along long. 105? 30? W. This trend correlates with two mineral deposits of the Southern Rocky Mountains Front Range. It also correlates in part with an area of volcanic rock and with a mapped fault complex (Elkhorn-Currant Creek-Else-Westcliffe). The trend is interpreted to indicate a continuous crustal fault system, although exposures of this system are discontinuous between areas of alluvium and volcanic-rock cover. \r\n\r\nSimilar geophysical trends exist in the Silver City to Tyrone area, where northeast-and northwest-trending anomalies appear to be marked by intrusion and mineralization. In this area, northwest-trending alluvial basins favor the use of geophysics to infer economically accessible but hidden bedrock whose association with exposed mineralization seems possible. An example of an inferred broad and relatively shallow, but hidden bedrock complex in association with more areally-limited mineralization is the Victorio Mountains area about 34 mi (55 km) south-southeast of Tyrone, New Mexico. The mineralization is within faulted sediments whose outcrop covers a small portion of the geophysical anomaly-complex.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83443","usgsCitation":"Klein, D.P., 1983, Slides showing aeromagnetic and gravity data for regional mineral exploration in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-443, 10 p.  ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83443.","productDescription":"10 p.  ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141871,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0443/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37630,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0443/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee88c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Klein, Douglas P.","contributorId":50896,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klein","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160393,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The system was proposed at the First Geothermal Implementation Conference in New Zealand in 1974 (Swanson, 1977) and was active until 1983. The primary mission was to provide a broad informational framework for the Geothermal Research Program (Duffield and Guffanti, 1981). GEOTHERM was used to support national geothermal assessments--in 1978 (Muffler, 1979) and 1982 (Reed, 1983). It was however a public system and provided data to both public and private sectors. A detailed discussion on databases in GEOTHERM and a general scheme of how the information system operated can be found in Bliss and Rapport (1983).

This report on Nevada is one of a series intended to preserve the data collected for GEOTHERM and make the data available to the public. This report will give summaries and sources of records for Nevada. The complete records for Nevada can be found in a companion report, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-433B, which is issued as MICROFICHE ONLY. States with significant geochemical data for geothermal fluids will be covered in individual reports such as this. A report will also be issued to cover miscellaneous data collected for sites in the central and eastern United States. The data presented this series is also available as a data file on the internationally-available General Electric Mark III service, a timeshare network. Inherent dangers, associated with water analysis and research laboratories where hazardous samples, materials, and equipment are used, must be minimized to protect workers, buildings, and equipment. Managers, supervisors, analysts, and laboratory support personnel each have specific responsibilities to reduce hazards by maintaining a safe work environment. General rules of conduct and safety practices that involve personal protection, laboratory practices, chemical handling, compressed gases handling, use of equipment, and overall security must be practiced by everyone at all levels. \r\n\r\nRoutine and extensive inspections of all laboratories must be made regularly by qualified people. Personnel should be trained thoroughly and repetitively. Logarithmic transformation and first-order differencing of the data sets were necessary to produce second-order, stationary time series and remove seasonal trends. \r\n\r\nCyclic models accounted for less than 42 percent of the variance in the water series and 31 percent in the sediment series. Analysis of the apparent oscillations of given frequencies occurring in the data indicates that frequently occurring storms can account for as much as 50 percent of the variation in sediment discharge. \r\n\r\nComponents of the frequency analysis indicate that a linear representation is reasonable for the water-sediment system. Models that incorporate lagged water discharge as input prove superior to univariate techniques in modeling and prediction of sediment discharges. The random component of the models includes errors in measurement and model hypothesis and indicates no serial correlation. An index of sediment production within or between drain-gage basins can be calculated from model parameters.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2216","usgsCitation":"Fitzgerald, M.G., and Karlinger, M.R., 1983, Daily water and sediment discharges from selected rivers of the eastern United States; a time-series modeling approach: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2216, vi, 24 p. :ill., 1 map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2216.","productDescription":"vi, 24 p. :ill., 1 map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137526,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2216/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26423,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2216/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65acb2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fitzgerald, Michael G.","contributorId":42942,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fitzgerald","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143606,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Karlinger, Michael R.","contributorId":10777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Karlinger","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143605,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
