S. Geological Survey. The retrieval revealed the analytical results of 17,959 samples collected and processed between October 1973 and October 1978. Of the approximately 500 genera of freshwater algae reported in the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey observed 321 genera in the phytoplankton. Fifty-two genera were considered to be commonly occurring and 42 genera were considered to be community dominants. The report lists, describes, and provides a detailed taxonomic key to the identification of 58 genera of algae considered either commonly occurring or dominant. Also included is a summary of environmental conditions under which each algal genus was observed, as well as a glossary and an extensive list of selected references.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2079","usgsCitation":"Greeson, P.E., 1982, An annotated key to the identification of commonly occurring and dominant genera of algae observed in the phytoplankton of the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2079, vi, 138 p. :ill. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2079.","productDescription":"vi, 138 p. :ill. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":136941,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2079/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26807,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2079/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db685770","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greeson, Phillip E.","contributorId":25556,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greeson","given":"Phillip","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144012,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This application was novel in the consideration of winter discharge records for the period of backwater effects due to ice. The current level of operation in Maine was identified as requiring a budget of $195,000 and having a total uncertainty of 374 cubic feet per second. Stream-gaging strategies were identified that could reduce the level of uncertainty in the system by as much as 45.8%, assuming the budgetary level remained constant. Alternately, practical stream-gaging strategies were also indentified that could reduce the total level of funding by as much as 19.2%, assuming the current level of uncertainty was deemed acceptable. Several alternatives of concurent budgeting and levels of uncertainty were identified. These relationships provide flexibility to the network manager. The results, documented in the report, were based on a sparse data base and should be applied in that context. Although many of the zones are no more than a few meters wide, they commonly contain 50 to 80 percent carbonaceous material and locally abundant pyrite. In places, several thin layers of highly concentrated carbonaceous material interlayered with chert form a multiple conductive zone that is seen in the geophysical data as complex anomaly patterns. In the geologic environment of Wadi Bidah, massive sulfide-bearing zones cannot be distinguished from siliceous-carbonaceous zones on the basis of the EM-SP responses. In North America in similar environments, complex resistivity methods used in experimental research have successfully discriminated between sulfide and carbonaceous conductors. The orebody, which contains abundant amorphous organic material, is situated on the reduced side of a regional reduction-oxidation (redox) interface. The presence of amorphous organic material suggests the orebody may represent a tabular (primary) deposit, whereas the close proximity of the orebody to the redox interface is suggestive that uranium was secondarily redistributed by oxidative processes from pre-existing tabular orebodies. Uranium contents correlate positively with both organic carbon and vanadium contents. Petrographic evidence and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive analyses point to uranium residence in the epigentically introduced amorphous organic material, which coats detrital grains and fills voids. Uranium mineralization was preceded by the following diagenetic alterations: precipitation of pyrite (ẟ<sup>34</sup>S values ranging from-11.0 to-38.2 per mil); precipitation of mixed-layer smectite-illite clays; partial dissolution of some of the detrital feldspar population; and precipitation of quartz and adularia overgrowths. Alterations associated with uranium mineralization include emplacement of amorphous organic material (possibly uranium bearing); destruction of detrital iron-titanium oxide grains; coprecipitation of chlorite and microcrystalline quartz, and precipitation of pyrite and marcasite (ẟ<sup>34</sup>S values for these sulfides ranging from -29.4 to -41.6 per mil). After mineralization, calcite, dolomite, barite, and kaolinite precipitated, and authigenic iron disulfides were replaced by ferric oxides and hydroxides. Geochemical data (primarily the positive correlation of uranium content to both organic carbon and vanadium contents) and petrographic observations (epigentically introduced amorphous organic matter and uranium residence in this organic matter) indicate that the Mariano Lake orebody is a tabular-type uranium deposit. Oxidative processes have not noticeably redistributed and reconcentrated primary uranium in the immediate vicinity of the deposit nor have they greatly modified geochemical characteristics in the ore. Preservation of the Mariano Lake deposit may not only be related to its position along the synclinal trough, where oxidative destruction of the orebody has been inhibited by stagnation of oxidizing ground waters by the structure, but also due to the deflection of ground waters (resulting from low orebody porosity) around the orebody.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82888","usgsCitation":"Fishman, N.S., and Reynolds, R.L., 1982, Origin of the Mariano Lake uranium deposit, McKinley County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-888, iii, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82888.","productDescription":"iii, 52 p.","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":141608,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0888/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36405,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0888/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","county":"McKinley County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-109.0452,36.006],[-108.7687,36.0063],[-108.3738,36.0044],[-108.2646,36.0038],[-108.1559,36.0027],[-108.1468,36.0028],[-108.1411,36.0029],[-108.1224,36.0028],[-107.8738,36.0034],[-107.8351,36.0035],[-107.6776,36.0031],[-107.66,36.0034],[-107.6423,36.0032],[-107.6247,36.0034],[-107.6213,36.003],[-107.6042,36.0032],[-107.5866,36.003],[-107.5718,36.0027],[-107.5541,36.0025],[-107.5513,36.0026],[-107.5161,36.0026],[-107.4421,36.0008],[-107.4068,36.0007],[-107.3875,36.0009],[-107.3397,36.0006],[-107.317,36.0008],[-107.3056,36.0005],[-107.3054,35.991],[-107.3058,35.9765],[-107.3055,35.9311],[-107.3051,35.8744],[-107.3049,35.8295],[-107.3047,35.8168],[-107.3053,35.7864],[-107.3054,35.7573],[-107.3057,35.7419],[-107.3049,35.7301],[-107.3052,35.7151],[-107.305,35.6997],[-107.3053,35.6852],[-107.305,35.6707],[-107.3048,35.6552],[-107.3046,35.6439],[-107.3041,35.6139],[-107.3032,35.5277],[-107.3035,35.4787],[-107.3025,35.4247],[-107.3016,35.3021],[-107.518,35.3036],[-107.5231,35.3036],[-107.6183,35.3059],[-107.6229,35.3059],[-107.6231,35.3159],[-107.6243,35.3485],[-107.7287,35.3489],[-107.7295,35.3366],[-107.7288,35.3062],[-107.7812,35.3063],[-107.8111,35.3063],[-107.8297,35.3065],[-107.8336,35.3064],[-107.9159,35.3065],[-107.9351,35.3066],[-107.9396,35.3065],[-107.974,35.3064],[-107.992,35.3066],[-108.0473,35.307],[-108.143,35.3057],[-108.151,35.307],[-108.2558,35.3077],[-108.364,35.3065],[-108.4661,35.3081],[-108.4644,35.2214],[-108.4659,35.1623],[-108.4661,35.1355],[-108.4673,35.0501],[-108.4678,34.9597],[-108.497,34.96],[-108.52,34.96],[-108.7809,34.9595],[-109.0458,34.9611],[-109.0458,35.166],[-109.0457,35.1796],[-109.0457,35.1941],[-109.0457,35.2078],[-109.0457,35.2228],[-109.0457,35.2359],[-109.0456,35.3531],[-109.0457,35.6637],[-109.0452,36.006]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"McKinley\",\"state\":\"NM\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635e15","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, Neil S.","contributorId":106464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fishman","given":"Neil","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158404,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reynolds, Richard L. 0000-0002-4572-2942 rreynolds@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4572-2942","contributorId":139068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reynolds","given":"Richard","email":"rreynolds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":158403,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Correlation analysis and R-mode factor analysis indicate that three major factors affect water composition in the spring systems studied: (1) duration of water circulation, (2) depth of water circulation, and (3) partial pressure of carbon dioxide. An examination of factor scores indicates that several types of hydrogeologic systems were sampled. Most of the samples are (1) older water from deeper circulating systems having relatively high salinity, high temperature, and low Eh or (2) younger water from shallower circulating systems having relatively low salinity, low temperature, and high Eh. The rest of the samples are from more complex systems. Any of the systems can have a relatively high or low content of dissolved carbonate species, resulting in a low or high pH, respectively. Uranium concentrations are commonly higher in waters of relatively low temperature and high Eh, and radium concentrations are commonly higher in waters having a relatively high carbonate content (low pH) and, secondarily, relatively high salinity. \r\n\r\nWater samples were collected and (or) measurements were taken at 156 of the 171 mineral-spring sites visited. Various samples were analyzed for radium, uranium, radon, helium, and radium-228 as well as major ions and numerous trace elements. On-site measurements for physical properties including temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, and dissolved oxygen were made. All constituents and properties show a wide range of values. Radium concentrations range from less than 0.01 to 300 picocuries per liter; they average 1.48 picocuries per liter and have an anomaly threshold value of 171 picocuries per liter for the samples studied. Uranium concentrations range from less than 0.01 to 120 micrograms per liter and average 0.26 micrograms per liter; they have an anomaly threshold value of 48.1 micrograms per liter. Radon content ranges from less than 10 to 110,000 picocuries per liter, averages 549 picocuries per liter and has an anomaly threshold of 20,400 picocuries per liter. Helium content ranges from -1,300 to +13,000 parts per billion relative to atmospheric helium; it averages +725 parts per billion and has an anomaly threshold of 10,000 parts per billion. Radium-228 concentrations range from less than 2.0 to 33 picocuries per liter; no anomaly threshold was determined owing to the small number of samples. All of the anomaly thresholds may be somewhat high because the sampling was biased toward springs likely to be radioactive. \r\n\r\nThe statistical variance in radium and uranium concentrations unaccounted for by the identified factors testifies to the complexity of some hydrogeologic systems. Unidentified factors related to geologic setting and the presence of uranium-rich rocks in the systems also affect the observed concentrations of the radioactive elements in the water. The association of anomalous radioactivity in several springs with nearby known uranium occurrences indicates that other springs having anomalous radioactivity may also be associated with uranium occurrences as yet undiscovered.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82324","usgsCitation":"Felmlee, J., and Cadigan, R.A., 1982, Radioactivity and geochemistry of selected mineral-spring waters in the Western United States; basic data and multivariate statistical analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-324, ii, 107 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82324.","productDescription":"ii, 107 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142733,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0324/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36377,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0324/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db634cbd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Felmlee, J.K.","contributorId":106114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Felmlee","given":"J.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158341,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cadigan, R. Examination of borehole cuttings, cores, and geophysical logs from test wells indicate that Triassic rocks and Upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary Coastal Plain sediments near the Barnwell-Allendale County line near Millett, South Carolina, are offset by a northeast-trending fault downthrown to the northwest. The location of this suspected Coastal Plain fault generally coincides with the location of an inferred fault in basement rocks as interpreted from aeromagnetic surveys. Apparent vertical offsets range from about 700 feet at the base of Upper Cretaceous sediments to about 20 feet in strata of Late Eocene age. As a result, the Upper Cretaceous Middendorf Formation which directly overlies crystalline and Triassic rocks updip (northwest) of this fault, is absent immediately downdip of the fault. The thickness of Tipper Cretaceous sediments is also sharply reduced from about 700 feet to about 180 feet across the fault.\r\n\r\nSediments of the basal Coastal Plain aquifer are largely truncated by uplifted Triassic rocks at the fault near Millett, South Carolina. Lateral ground-water flow near the Savannah River Is consequently disrupted updip of the fault and ground water is transferred vertically into overlying sediments and possibly into the Savannah River. At several locations, abrupt changes in potentiometric head occur across this fault. Computed transmissivity of the basal Coastal Plain aquifer is also radically reduced downdip of the fault, sharply reversing a downdip trend of rapidly increasing aquifer transmissivity. \r\n\r\nOther anomalous potentiometric data along a northeast-trending line between Statesboro, Georgia, and Fairfax, South Carolina, suggest the possibility of similar faulting in correlative geologic units. The location of the suspected fault near Statesboro, Georgia, generally coincides with the eastward extension of the Gulf Trough, a regional potentiometric anomaly in central Georgia.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82156","usgsCitation":"Faye, R., and Prowell, D., 1982, Effects of Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic faulting on the The range of exponents of simple power-function relations is large, both between different reaches of the river, and among different sections within a given reach. The at-a-station exponents plot in several fields of the b-f-m diagram, suggesting that morphologic and hydraulic changes with increasing discharge vary considerably. Systematic changes in the plotting positions of the exponents with time indicate that in general, the width exponent has decreased, although trends are not readily apparent in the other exponents. Plots of the hydraulic-geometry relations indicate that simple power functions are not the proper model in all instances. For these sections, breaks in the slopes of the hydraulic geometry relations serve to partition the data sets. Power functions fit separately to the partitioned data described the width-, depth-, and velocity-discharge relations more accurately than did a single power function. Plotting positions of the exponents from hydraulic geometry relations of partitioned data sets on b-f-m diagrams indicate that much of the apparent variations of plotting positions of single power functions results because the single power functions compromise both subsets of partitioned data. For several sections, the shape of the channel primarily accounts for the better fit of two-power functions to partitioned data than a single power function over the entire range of data. These non-log linear relations may have significance for channel maintenance. The bearing and plunge of the maximum and minimum principal stress components are, respectively: N. 56? E., 29? NE; and N. 42? W., 14? NW. The vertical stress magnitude of 7.9 MPa calculated from the overcore data is significantly less than expected from overburden pressure, suggesting the stress field is influenced by local or areal geologic factors. Results from this investigation indicate (1) the stress state at the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site deviates significantly from a gravitational stress field, both in relative stress magnitudes and in orientation; (2) numerical modeling will not realistically simulate the near-field response of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site if gravitational and (or) horizontal and vertical applied stress boundary conditions are assumed; and (3) substantial stress variations may occur spatially within the stock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82458","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., and Magner, J.E., 1982, Determination of in situ state of stress at the Spent Fuel Test-Climax site, Climax Stock, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-458, i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82458.","productDescription":"i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141088,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36312,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667709","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, W. As part of a study of the hydrology of foothills streams in Colorado, charts from streamflow gages on unregulated streams were examined to determined the source of peak-flow events. Snowmelt-runoff peaks were distinguished from rainfall-runoff peaks on the basis of daily and seasonal occurrence, hydrograph shape, and local weather conditions. Peak-flow data for snowmelt runoff and rainfall runoff are presented for 69 streamflow-gaging stations in the South Platte River, the Arkansas River, and the Colorado River basins. The data management system is used to retrieve and combine data from USGS data files for use in rainfall, runoff, and water-quality models and for data computations such as storm loads. The system is based on the data management aspect of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and was used to create all the data files in the data base. SAS is used for storage and retrieval of basin physiography, land-use, and environmental practices inventory data. Also, storm-event water-quality characteristics are stored in the data base. The advantages of using SAS to create and manage a data base are many with a few being that it is simple, easy to use, contains a comprehensive statistical package, and can be used to modify files very easily. Data base system development has progressed rapidly during the last two decades and the data managment system concepts used in this study reflect the advancement made in computer technology during this era. Urban stormwater data is, however, just one application for which the system can be used.
