{"pageNumber":"1631","pageRowStart":"40750","pageSize":"25","recordCount":46644,"records":[{"id":11723,"text":"ofr82313 - 1982 - Fluid-inclusion data on samples from Creede, Colorado, in relation to mineral paragenesis","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2012-02-02T00:06:31","indexId":"ofr82313","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1982","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":330,"text":"Open-File Report","code":"OFR","onlineIssn":"2331-1258","printIssn":"0196-1497","active":true,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"82-313","title":"Fluid-inclusion data on samples from Creede, Colorado, in relation to mineral paragenesis","docAbstract":"Published and unpublished data on 2575 fluid inclusions in ore and gangue minerals from the Creede, Colorado, Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu vein deposit collected in our laboratories from 1959 to 1981 have shown that the average salinity (wt. % NaCl equivalent, hereinafter termed wt.% eq.) and homogenization temperature (Th), and the ranges of these two parameters for fluid inclusions in sphalerite, quartz, fluorite, and rhodochrosite, respectively, are 8.1 (4.6 - 13.4), 239?C (195-274?C); 6.1 (1.1-10.0), 260?C (190->400?C); 10.7 (6.1-11.1), 217?C (213-229?C) and 260?C (247-268?C) (bimodal distribution of Th); and 9.9 (9.3 - 10.6), 214?C (185-249?C). Inclusions have been measured in minerals from four of the five stages of mineralization previously recognized at Creede. The few inclusions of fluids depositing rhodochrosite (A-stage, earliest in the paragenesis) yield Th and salinity values more similar to those of the low-temperature (average Th 217?C) fluids forming some of the much later fluorite (C-stage) than to any of the other fluids. Th measurements on A-stage quartz range from 192?C to 263?C and average 237?C. The early, fine-grained, B-stage sphalerites yielded Th of 214 to 241?C and salinities of 6.1 to 10.2 wt. % eq. \r\n\r\nD-stage sphalerite (late in the paragenesis) has been studied in detail (growth-zone by growth-zone) for several localities along the OH vein and reveals a generally positive correlation among Th, salinity and iron content of the host sphalerite. The deposition of D-stage sphalerite was characterized by repeated cycling through different regions of salinity/Th space, as Th and salinity generally decreased with time. Seventeen salinity-Th measurements were made on D-stage sphalerite from one locality on the Bulldog Mountain vein system, which, like the OH vein, is one of four major ore-producing vein systems at Creede. These data suggest a lower Th for a given salinity fluid from sphalerite on the Bulldog Mountain vein than on the OH vein. The very high values of Th for some quartz samples (mostly D-stage) are believed to be a result of the trapping of both gas and liquid from a boiling fluid in the upper levels of the vein system. Boiling of fluids depositing D-stage quartz is indicated by the presence of steam inclusions in quartz and the extreme variability of Th values measured on quartz. The pressure was low (< 125 kg/cm 2) throughout ore deposition. \r\n\r\nThree major growth zones in D-stage sphalerite are recognized throughout the OH vein. Deposition of the first major zone began from fluids having intermediate salinities and temperatures (7.8-9.2 wt. % eq., 240?C) but the characteristics of the fluids oscillated after that, ranging from 7.2 to 10.1 wt. % eq. and from 225?C to 270?C. Deposition of the second major, most Fe-rich zone began with the hottest, most saline fluids present during D-stage mineralization (. 270?C, 10.5-12.5 wt. % eq., 3 mole % FeS in sphalerite). The fluid then oscillated with respect to Th and salinity (213-274?C, 5.2-12.5 wt. % eq.) but showed a general decrease in both with time. Deposition of the youngest major zone began with a very Fe-poor sphalerite (0.25-0.75 mole % FeS), from the least saline, coolest fluids (5-6.5 wt. % eq., 200-212?C) and ended with a trend of increasing temperature at approximately constant salinity.\r\n\r\nThe fluid-inclusion data can best be explained by a mixing model involving at least two fluids--one hot and saline, the other cool and fresher. Sudden changes in the mixing ratio, presumably from changes in the plumbing, punctuated long periods of remarkably uniform conditions of ore fluid flow and deposition. The effects of other processes such as convection and heat exchange with wall rocks must have been superimposed on this simple mixing model, however. In contrast to an earlier interpretation, several aspects of the inclusion data may be interpreted to suggest exceedingly slow ore deposition. The GOES system, in its present state of development, was found to be about as reliable as conventional methods of data collection. Benefits of using the GOES system include some cost and manpower reduction, improved data accuracy, near real-time data availability, and direct computer storage and analysis of data. The GOES system could allow annual manpower reductions of 19 to 23 percent with reduction in cost for some and increase in cost for other single-parameter sites, such as streamflow, rainfall, and ground-water monitoring stations. Manpower reductions of 46 percent or more appear possible for multiple-parameter sites. Implementation of expected improvements in instrumentation and data handling procedures should further reduce costs. There are 260 annotated citations: 176 citations of reports; 8 citations of computer models that have been used to model either or both rivers; and 76 citations of data in reports , in field notes, lab sheets, or handwritten tabulations, and in computer data bases. Citations of all the reports and data located that might conceivably be useful in understanding and interpreting the biological and chemical quality of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers in the past, present, or future were included. The accuracy of the citations was not verified and secondary sources, such as other annotated bibliographies, were used in the compilation of this Existing data on water levels, well construction, and water quality were compiled, and a limited program of water-level measurement and water-quality sampling was conducted during 1976-77 to provide documentation of current hydrologic conditions against which effects of future development may be measured.<br></p><p>Water-level measurements show the presence of small independent aquifers near the periphery of the alluvial fan covering the study area and a main alluvial aquifer in which water levels fluctuate in direct response to annual changes in lake stage.</p><p>The sampled ground water can be grouped into four chemical types--three based on the relative proportions of sulfate and bicarbonate and one based on an increased proportion of chloride plus nitrate.</p><p>Frequency distributions of the observed occurrences of nitrate (as NO3), phosphate (as PO4), and chloride in ground water indicate thresholds for background concentrations of these constituents at 0 to 3, 0 to 0.35, and 0 to 6 milligrams per liter, respectively. Above-background concentrations of nitrate and phosphate in ground water may be attributable, in part, to natural sources of these constituents; however, septic-tank effluents have increased the concentrations of nitrate, chloride, and perhaps phosphate in at least two areas of the current development. As a result of that program, a technique is presented for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on small streams in South Carolina with drainage areas ranging in size from 1 to 500 square miles. Peak-discharge data from 74 stream-gaging stations (25 small streams were synthesized, whereas 49 stations had long-term records) were used in multiple regression procedures to obtain equations for estimating magnitude of floods having recurrence intervals of 10, 25, 50, and 100 years on small natural streams. The significant independent variable was drainage area. Equations were developed for the three physiographic provinces of South Carolina (Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge) and can be used for estimating floods on small streams. No adverse indicators were found for nuclear waste repository siting south of Indian Creek, but additional soundings should be made to increase data density and to extend the survey area southward. The Lockhart fault system appears to have triggered salt dissolution or flow outside the limits of Lockhart Basin; further geophysical work and drilling will be required to understand the origin of the Lockhart Basin structure and its present state of activity. Multiple-regression techniques were used to define the relationship between a suite of basin and climatic characteristics and flood peaks in three flood-frequency regions at a total of 95 sites. Station flood-frequency data were computed following guidelines in Bulletin I7A of the U.S. Water Resources Council. The frequency analyses are based upon weighted skew values, and adjustments for high and low outliers, and historic peak data. Regression equations for estimation of peak discharges for 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.04, 0.02, and 0.01 exceedance probabilities are provided for ungaged sites. An improved sample of flood peaks and gaging stations and the definition of three flood-frequency regions reduced the standard error of estimate by about 5 percent over those for the 1977 relations. Included in this analysis were the synthetic flood-frequency data at eight sites computed using historic climatic data and 10 parameters optimized by calibration of the U.S. Geological Survey's rainfall-runoff model with storm data observed over II years. The equations are applicable to streams unaffected by regulation where the usable manmade storage is less than 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile, or by diversions or urbanization. The equations are restricted to sites where the basin indices are within a specified range outside of eastern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes or Nantucket Counties. In these areas, the available data do not adequately define the influence of high infiltration and storage capacities of drainage basins on Data for precipitation , air temperature, and evaporation obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1974 to September 1978, and similar short-term data obtained by other Federal agencies at sites in and near the study area, were tabulated and adjusted to a 1941-70 base period. For all sites with incomplete records for 1941-70, the data were adjusted by relating them to concurrent data collected at one or more long-term National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sites. Maps were prepared showing areal variance for normal annual precipitation, normal annual air temperature, and normal annual pan evaporation.. The normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 inches for altitudes under 5,000 feet to more than 20 inches above 9,000 feet. The normal annual air temperature ranges from 37 to 47 degrees Fahrenheit and varies inversely with altitude and latitude. The normal annual pan evaporation ranges from 42 to 60 inches and varies directly with normal annual air temperature. Although not mapped, it is shown that the normal April 1 water content of the snowpack increases from about 5 inches at 7,000 feet to about 11 inches at 9,000 feet. In addition, the year-to-year and within-year variances of some climatic characteristics are illustrated. The standard error of estimate when relating normal annual precipitation to altitude is 17%, which is equivalent to the standard error when relating the average for 5 years of observed record at a site to the long-term mean at the site. Thus, it appears that additional observation points would not improve areal coverage unless the observation sites were continued for 5 years or longer. The rocks of the Ducktown massive sulfide district to the northeast do not appear to extend into the study area, and geochemical data derived from samples of rock, soil, and alluvium do not reveal any anomalously high concentrations of trace elements that could be representative of hidden mineral deposits. Sedimentary rocks underlying the metamorphic rocks exposed at the surface have an unknown potential for hydrocarbons in the form of natural gas. (fig. 1).
