A floodprofile-modeling study was conducted to model the effects of selected channel and structural modifications on flood elevations and inundated areas. The study covered the reach of Harbor Brook downstream from Interstate 691 and the reach of Crow Hollow Brook downstream from Johnson Avenue. Proposed modifications, which include changes to bank heights, channel geometry, structural geometry, and streambed armoring on Harbor Brook and changes to bank heights on Crow Hollow Brook, significantly lower flood elevations.  Results of the modeling indicate a significant reduction of flood elevations for the 10-year, 25-year, 35-year, 50-year, and 100-year flood frequencies using proposed modifications to (1 ) bank heights between Harbor Brook Towers and Interstate 691 on Harbor Brook, and between Centennial Avenue and Johnson Avenue on Crow Hollow Brook; (2) channel geometry between Coe Avenue and Interstate 69 1 on Harbor Brook; (3) bridge and culvert opening geometry between Harbor Brook Towers and Interstate 691 on Harbor Brook; and (4) channel streambed armoring between Harbor Brook Towers and Interstate 691 on Harbor Brook. The proposed modifications were developed without consideration of cost-benefit ratios.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri944153","usgsCitation":"Weiss, L.A., Sears, M.P., and Cervione, M.A., 1994, Hydraulic modeling of stream channels and structures in Harbor and Crow Hollow Brooks, Meriden, Connecticut: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4153, iv, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944153.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":126670,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4153/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59207,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4153/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db62a2e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weiss, Lawrence A.","contributorId":102528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weiss","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sears, Michael P.","contributorId":28638,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sears","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cervione, Michael A. These data were collected, in cooperation with the Bonneville Power Administration, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, to provide baseline data for identifying and assessing the effects of proposed geothermal development in the vicinity of Newberry Volcano. Types of data collected include ground-water levels, lake levels, streamflow, water quality, and meteorologic measurements. Sites that were monitored include: (1) two thermal wells in the caldera, (2) several nonthermal wells in the caldera, (3) four wells outside of the caldera, (4) Paulina Creek, (5) Paulina and East Lakes, (6) hot springs that discharge into Paulina and East Lakes, and (7) meteorologic conditions near Paulina Lake. Data are presented for the period summer 1991 through fall 1993. Water-quality data collected include concentrations of common anions and cations, nutrients, trace elements, radiochemicals, and isotopes. Meteorologic data collected include wind velocity, air temperature, humidity, solar radiation, and precipitation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr94122","usgsCitation":"Crumrine, M.D., and Morgan, D.S., 1994, Hydrologic, water-quality, and meteorologic data for Newberry Volcano and vicinity, Deschutes County, Oregon, 1991-93: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-122, 70 p, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94122.","productDescription":"70 p","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":150669,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0122/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47942,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0122/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db688aa1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crumrine, Milo D.","contributorId":68757,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crumrine","given":"Milo","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179401,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Morgan, David S.","contributorId":73181,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morgan","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The 1990 landward extent of saltwater intrusion and data for 1980 and 1990 for each monitoring well are presented. The results of the study indicate that chloride concentrations in ground water east of major well fields have increased and that the saltwater-freshwater interface has moved landward from 1980 to 1990 in response to lowered regional water levels. This lowering of water levels is the result of the construction of tidal canals and the withdrawal of water from well fields. Historical data from three monitoring wells (G-1237, G-1435, and G-20555) were analyzed to determine trends in chloride concen- tration as a function of time. Samples from wells G-1435 and G-2055 indicate that the chloride concentrations have increased steadily with declines of regional water levels, whereas data from well G-1237 indicate that a decrease in pumpage can reverse saltwater intrusion.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri934164","usgsCitation":"Koszalka, E.J., 1994, Delineation of saltwater intrusion in the Biscayne aquifer, eastern Broward County, Florida, 1990: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4164, 2 maps on 1 sheet ; 44 x 21 cm., sheet 76 x 74 cm., folded to 19 x 19 cm., in envelope 31 x 23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934164.","productDescription":"2 maps on 1 sheet ; 44 x 21 cm., sheet 76 x 74 cm., folded to 19 x 19 cm., in envelope 31 x 23 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":167889,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":82051,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4164/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab3e4b07f02db66f83b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Koszalka, Edward J.","contributorId":47850,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Koszalka","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230355,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Annual constituent loads were estimated for the area drained by the Davenport storm-sewer network. In all cases, the regression-equation estimate of mean annual load is less than the estimate obtained by using the method of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The largest mean annual loads for total nitrite nitrogen, total nitrate nitrogen, total nitrite and nitrate nitrogen, total organic nitrogen, total ammonia and organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus are associated with residential land, which covers 67.2 percent of the area drained.</p>\n<p>Using concentration data from this study, it is estimated that an average storm-producing runoff during the 7-day, 10-year low-flow discharge of the Mississippi River would contribute about 4 percent of the total ammonia and organic nitrogen load in the river. Precipitation-chemistry data indicate that substantial parts of the nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen contained in the stormwater runoff could be from precipitation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa City, IA","doi":"10.3133/wri944130","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Davenport, Iowa","usgsCitation":"Schaap, B., and Lucey, K., 1994, Selected nutrients in stormwater runoff from Davenport, Iowa, 1992: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4130, iv, 29 p.: ill., maps; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944130.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p.: ill., maps; 28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159941,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4130/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58377,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4130/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","city":"Davenport","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.48820495605467,\n              41.51834634058004\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.516357421875,\n              41.5198886863019\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.538330078125,\n              41.52554363946853\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.56442260742188,\n              41.519374575145406\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.57952880859375,\n              41.51371908287346\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.59532165527344,\n              41.5070346821719\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.60218811035156,\n              41.494692436865364\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.62278747558594,\n              41.482862244540875\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.6427001953125,\n              41.47154438707647\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.65437316894531,\n              41.46125371076149\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.66810607910156,\n              41.46125371076149\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.67222595214844,\n              41.61236215526601\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.49095153808594,\n              41.61236215526601\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.48820495605467,\n              41.51834634058004\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b174","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schaap, B.D.","contributorId":56249,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schaap","given":"B.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201699,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lucey, K.J.","contributorId":70002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucey","given":"K.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201700,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These samples were re-analyzed later by simultaneous multielement inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic-emission spectrometry and Zeeman-corrected GFAAS to determine the concentrations of many of the same constituents with improved accuracy, precision, and sensitivity. The result of this analysis has been the generation of comparative concentration values for a significant subset of the solute constituents. Many of the more recently determined values replace less-than-detection values for the trace metals; others constitute duplicate analyses for the major constituents. The multiple determinations have yielded a more complete, accurate, and precise set of analytical data. They also have resulted in an opportunity to compare the performance of the plasma-emission instruments operated in their respective simultaneous multielement modes.  Flame atomic-absorption spectrometry was judged best for Na and K and hydride-generation atomic-absorption spectrometry was judged best for As because of their lower detection limit and relative freedom from interelement spectral effects. Colorimetric determination using ferrozine as the color agent was judged most accurate, precise, and sensitive for Fe. Cadmium, lead, and vanadium concentrations were too low in this set of samples to enable a determination of whether ICP or DCP is a more suitable technique. Of the remaining elements, Ba, Be, Ca, Cr, Mg, Mn, Sr, and Zn have roughly equivalent accuracy, precision, and detection limit by ICP and DCP. Cobalt and Ni were determined to be better analyzed by ICP, because of lower detection limits; B, Cu, Mo, and Si were determined to be better analyzed by DCP, because of relative freedom from interferences. The determination oral by DCP was far more sensitive, owing to the use of a more sensitive wavelength, compared with the ICP. However, there is a very serious potential interference from a strong Ca emission line near the 396.15 nanometer DCP wavelength. Thus, there is no clear choice between the plasma techniques tested, for the determination oral. The ICP and DCP detection limits are typically between 0.001 and 0.5 milligrams per liter in acid mine waters. For those metals best analyzed by ICP and/or DCP, but below these limits, GFAAS is the method of choice because of its relatively greater sensitivity and specificity. Six of the elements were not determined by DCP, ICP or Zeeman-corrected GFAAS, and are not discussed in this report. These elements are: Bi, Fe(11), Li, Sb, Se, and TI.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri934122","usgsCitation":"Ball, J., and Nordstrom, D.K., 1994, A comparison of simultaneous plasma, atomic absorption, and iron colorimetric determinations of major and trace constituents in acid mine waters: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4122, viii, 151 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934122.","productDescription":"viii, 151 p. The investigation of sources was confined to distinct geographic patterns in the trend indicators for one constituent or for a group of related constituents.</p>\n<p>The probable source of trend patterns in nutrients and measures of oxygen in the Trinity River Basin was changes in the wastewater treatment facilities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. A pattern of increased concentrations of inorganic constituents in the upper Colorado River Basin resulted from emergency releases of water from the Natural Darn Lake, a salinity control structure. Trend patterns in inorganic constituents in the Rio Grande Basin were a result of increasing concentrations in the Pecos River and, to a lesser extent, the Rio Grande above the Amistad Reservoir, combined with the effects of reservoir regulation. A pattern of increasing concentrations of organic plus ammonia nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen was detected for the 1975-86 water years for stations with low concentrations (generally less than 5 milligrams per liter) of these nitrogen species. The trends were no longer evident when the period of trend analysis was extended to the 1989 water year. A positive bias in the data caused by the addition of mercuric chloride tablets to preserve nutrient samples during 1980-86 was the probable source of this trend pattern. A pattern of increasing concentrations in dissolved sulfate in the eastern part of the State was a result of a positive bias in the analytical results of a turbidimetric method of sulfate analysis. The source of a statewide pattern of increased pH in streams could not be identified.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, The combined effects of storm surge from the hurricane and astronomical tide, referred to as storm tide, caused flooding over a large part of southern Florida. Subsequent to the flooding, many high-water marks were identified, described, and surveyed along the south- eastern coast of Florida (Miami to Key Largo) and at selected areas along the southwestern coast of Florida (Flamingo to Goodland). Descriptions of these 336 high-water makrs are presented in tabular form in this report and their locations are plotted on nineteen 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps. For the southeastern coast, north-south profiles of the high-water makrs along the outher and inner barrier islands and the western shoreline of Biscayne Bay are presented. Average storm-tide elevations (relative to sea level) ranged from 4 to 6 feet in northern Biscayne Bay, were as much as 17 feet on the western shoreline near the center of the bay and ranged from 3 to 6 feet in southern Biscayne Bay and Barnes Sound. The potential for flooding and related fluvial-debris hazards was investigated with respect to the potential shaft location. Trenches excavated through fluvial sediment deposits revealed interstratified rock detritus emplaced by floods and debris flows. Most of the deposits are believed to be of late Quaternary age. Debros-flow deposits contain boulders as large as 3 feet in diameter. This evidence of intense prehistoric flooding and debris movement indicates the possibility of similar continuing activity. Empirical estimates of extreme flood flows in North Fork Coyote Wash, a 0.094- square-mile drainage to the shaft site, range from 900 to 2,600 cubic feet per second. Current (1992) knowledge indicates that flows of water and debris as much as 2,500 cubic feet per second can occur in the vicinity of the shaft from this drainage. Similar size flows from adjacent South Fork Coyote Wash, could arrive simultaneously in the vicinity of the shaft. Thus, cumulative water and debris from both tributaries could subject the alluvial flood plain near the shaft site to flows of as much as 5,000 cubic feet per second.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr92458","usgsCitation":"Glancy, P.A., 1994, Evidence of prehistoric flooding and the potential for future extreme flooding at Coyote Wash, Yucca Mountain, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 92-458, iv, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr92458.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151054,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0458/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48530,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0458/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48531,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0458/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f9876","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Glancy, Patrick A.","contributorId":87113,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Glancy","given":"Patrick","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180297,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The springs were placed into three categories based on their locations and tritium concentrations: Category I was the upstream most and contained from 52.8+3.2 to 78.4+5.1 pCi/L of tritium; Category 11 was downstream from those in Category I and contained from 9.2+0.6 to 18.6+1.2 pCi/L; and Category III was the farthest downstream and contained from 28.3+1.9 to 47.7+3.2 pCi/L. Differences in tritium concentrations in the Category I, II, and III springs are a function of the ground-water flow regime, land use, and irrigation practices in and hydraulically upgradient from each category of springs. A comparatively large part of the water from the Category I springs is derived from recharge in heavily irrigated areas in which the irrigation water largely is diverted from the Snake River. A large part of the recharge for Category II springs occurs as much as 140 miles upgradient. Tritium concentrations in Category III springs indicate an intermediate proportion of the recharge is from excess applied-irrigation water. The concept that recharge from excess applied- irrigation water from the Snake River has affected tritium in the aquifer is supported by isotopic and nitrogen data. Deuterium and oxygen-18 isotopic values, and nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen concentrations in the flow of some springs has been impacted by irrigation.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri944247","usgsCitation":"Mann, L., and Low, W.H., 1994, Tritium, stable isotopes, and nitrogen in flow from selected springs that discharge to the Snake River, Twin Falls-Hagerman area, Idaho, 1990-93: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4247, iv, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944247.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410649,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48114.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":57389,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4247/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159481,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4247/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","city":"Hagerman, Twin Falls","otherGeospatial":"Snake River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.3167,\n              42.5667\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3167,\n              42.9258\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.95,\n              42.9258\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.95,\n              42.5667\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3167,\n              42.5667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af4e4b07f02db691e06","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mann, L. Ground-water data from that study are presented for water years 1992 and 1993 and include location, construction information, site plans, water levels, chemical and physical field measurements, and selected chemical analyses of water samples for 10 monitoring well groups. During January 1993, a flood occurred in Pinal Creek that resulted in a record peak discharge of 5,700 cubic feet per second. During this flood, well group 450 was destroyed. Surface-water data are presented for 13 sites and include discharge measurements, chemical and physical field measure- ments, and chemical analyses of water. Data from a solute-transport study that was conducted in November 1992 are presented for shallow ground-water and surface-water sites along Pinal Creek. During this study, variations in metal chemistry with distance along Pinal Creek and depth below the streambed were determined and two filter sizes were used to quantify the partitioning of metals between dissolved and particulate phases. Monthly precipi- tation data and long-term precipitation statistics are presented for two sites.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, The data sets were chosen with input from the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Continental-Scale International Project (GCIP) Data Committee and the GCIP Hydrometeorology and Atmospheric Subpanels. The data sets include: locations and periods of record for stream gages, reservoir gages, and meteorological stations; a 500-meter-resolution digital elevation model; grid-node locations for the Eta numerical weather-prediction model; and digital map data sets of geology, land use, streams, large reservoirs, average annual runoff, average annual precipitation, average annual temperature, average annual heating and cooling degree days, hydrologic units, and state and county boundaries. Also included are digital index maps for LANDSAT scenes, and for the U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000, 1:100,000, and 1:24,000-scale map series. Most of the data sets cover the conterminous United States; the digital elevation model also includes part of southern Canada. The stream and reservoir gage and meteorological station files cover all states having area within the Mississippi River Basin plus that part of the Mississippi River Basin lying within Canada. Several data-base retrievals were processed by state, therefore many sites outside the Mississippi River Basin are included.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr94388","usgsCitation":"Rea, A., and Cederstrand, J.R., 1994, Global energy and water cycle experiment (GEWEX) continental-scale international project (GCIP); reference data sets CD-ROM: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-388, 1 computer laser optical disc ;4 3/4 in. +1 booklet ([4] p. ; 12 cm.), both in plastic box (13 x 15 x 1 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94388.","productDescription":"1 computer laser optical disc ;4 3/4 in. +1 booklet ([4] p. ; 12 cm.), both in plastic box (13 x 15 x 1 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153261,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abee4b07f02db674ae9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rea, Alan","contributorId":41018,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rea","given":"Alan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182916,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cederstrand, Joel R.","contributorId":15223,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cederstrand","given":"Joel","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182915,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The sampling cruises were made during different seasons, in the free-flowing reaches of the river from St. Louis, Missouri, to New Orleans, Louisiana. The first three cruises were made during low-water conditions, and the last four cruises during high-water conditions. The purpose for sampling and characterizing natural organic substances in the various phases in the river was to provide an understanding of how these substances facilitate contaminant transport and transformations in the Mississippi River.  Significant conclusions of this study were: (1) Natural organic substances appear to stabilize ' certain colloids against aggregation; therefore, these colloids remain in suspension and can act as transport agents that are not affected by sedimentation. Bacteria were found to be a significant fraction of organic colloids. (2) A new class of organic contaminants (polyethylene glycols) derived from nonionic surfactant residues was discovered dissolved with natural organic substances in water. These polyethylene glycols have the potential to affect both organic and inorganic contaminant transport in water. (3) The entire dissolved organic-matter component under varying hydrologic and seasonal conditions was characterized. (4) A method was developed to characterize organic matter in sediment by solid-state, 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. (5) The organic matter in suspended sediments was characterized by a variety of spectral and nonspectral methods. The protein component (significant in trace-metal binding) and lipid component (significant in organic-contaminant binding) were found to be major constituents in natural organic matter in suspended sediment. (6) Pools are reservoirs acting as traps of sedimentary organic matter of allochthonous origin and export material of autochthonous nitrogen. (7) A major portion of the mass of organic colloids in transport consisted of bacterial cells.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri934204","usgsCitation":"Leenheer, J., Noyes, T., and Brown, P., 1994, Data on natural organic substances in dissolved, colloidal, suspended-silt and -clay, and bed-sediment phases in the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries, 1987-90: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4204, vii, 71 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934204.","productDescription":"vii, 71 p.","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123958,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4204/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57111,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4204/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Mississippi River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.2294921875,\n              45.89000815866184\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.50390625,\n              46.07323062540835\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.185546875,\n              45.02695045318546\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.7685546875,\n              43.58039085560784\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.4833984375,\n              41.73852846935917\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.4501953125,\n              39.30029918615029\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.23046875,\n              35.137879119634185\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.0654296875,\n              31.541089879585808\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.7578125,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9892578125,\n              28.34306490482549\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.505859375,\n              30.29701788337205\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.65917968749999,\n              30.486550842588485\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.791015625,\n              32.13840869677249\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.82421875,\n              34.08906131584994\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9453125,\n              35.96022296929667\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9453125,\n              37.579412513438385\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.912109375,\n              39.70718665682654\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.384765625,\n              41.57436130598913\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.966796875,\n              44.05601169578525\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.2294921875,\n              45.89000815866184\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696feb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leenheer, J.A.","contributorId":75123,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leenheer","given":"J.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199545,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Noyes, T.I.","contributorId":54971,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noyes","given":"T.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199543,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Brown, P.A.","contributorId":73245,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"P.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199544,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Previous studies determined that major-ion and nutrient concentrations in Devils Lake are strongly affected by microbially mediated sulfate reduction and dissolution of sulfate and carbonate minerals in the bottom sediments. These studies documented substantial spatial variability in the magnitude of calculated benthic fluxes coincident with the horizontal salinity gradient in Devils Lake. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate seasonal variability in benthic-flux rates, and to understand the effect of these fluxes on the major-ion and nutrient chemistries in Devils Lake between May and October 1991. </p><p>During the study period, the water column was well mixed, and specific conductance, pH, and temperature did not vary with depth. Dissolved oxygen was enriched near the lake surface due to photosynthesis. Major-ion concentrations and nutrient concentrations did not vary with depth. Because the water-quality data were obtained during open-water periods, the vertical profiles reflect well-mixed conditions. However, the first and last profiles for the study period did document near-bottom maxima of major cations. Secchi-disk depth varied from 0.82 meter on May 7,1991, to 2.13 meters on June 5, 1991. The mean Secchi-disk depth during the study period was 1.24 meters. Seasonal variations in Secchi-disk depths were attributed to variations in primary productivity and phytoplankton communities. </p><p>Nutrient cycles in Devils Lake were evaluated using gross primary productivity rate data, sediment trap data, and major-ion and nutrient benthic-flux rate data. Gross primary productivity rate was smallest in May (0.076 gram of carbon per square meter per day) and largest in September (1.8 grams of carbon per square meter per day). Average gross primary productivity for the study period was 0.87 gram of carbon per square meter per day. Average gross primary productivity is consistent with historic data from Devils Lake and with data from other eutrophic lakes.</p><p>The average flux of organic carbon for the study period was 12 grams per square meter per day. The calculated carbon to nitrogen to phosphorus ratio (317:25:1) is similar to the Redfield ratio (106:16:1); therefore, most organic matter probably is derived from lacustrine phytoplankton.</p><p>Calculated benthic-flux rates indicated that bottom sediments are important sources of majorions and nutrients to Devils Lake. Only one of the cores collected during this study indicated a net sulfate flux from the lake into the sediments. Seasonal variations in major-ion and nutrient benthic fluxes generally were small. However, there were important differences between the calculated benthic fluxes for this study and the calculated benthic fluxes for 1990. Calculated benthic fluxes of bicarbonate, ammonia, and phosphorus for this study were smaller than&nbsp;calculated benthic fluxes for 1990. The large differences between fluxes for 1990 and 1991 were attributed to calm, stratified water-column conditions in 1990 and well-mixed water-column conditions in 1991.</p><p>The role of benthic fluxes in the chemical mass balances in Devils Lake was evaluated by calculating response times for major ions and nutrients in Devils Lake. The calculated response times for major ions in Devils Lake ranged from 6.7 years for bicarbonate to 34 years for sulfur (as 804). The response times for major ions are significantly shorter than previous estimates that did not include benthic fluxes. In addition, the relatively short response times for nitrogen (4.2 years) and phosphorus (0.95 year) indicate that nutrients are recycled rapidly between bottom sediments and the lake. During the study period, benthic fluxes were the dominant source of major ions and nutrients to Devils Lake and greatly reduced the response times of all major ions and nutrients for Devils Lake. The alluvial aquifer consists of sand and gravel in flood-plain and terrace deposits of Quaternary age and supplies much of the water used for irrigation and aquaculture in eastern Arkansas. The map of the potentiometric surface, 5-year water-level change, and depth to water illustrates the effects of large with- drawals for irrigation on water levels in the aquifer. One large area of depression in the potentiometric surface, caused by large with- drawals of ground water for irrigation, occurs in Arkansas, Lonoke, and Prairie Counties, and another extends from Monroe County to western Craighead County.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr93374","usgsCitation":"Westerfield, P.W., and Poynter, D.T., 1994, Water-level maps of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer in eastern Arkansas, spring 1992: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-374, 3 maps ;78 x 46 and 39 x 24 cm., on sheet 97 x 152 cm., folded in envelope 32 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93374.","productDescription":"3 maps ;78 x 46 and 39 x 24 cm., on sheet 97 x 152 cm., folded in envelope 32 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160400,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":21467,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0374/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":21468,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0374/plate-1-preview.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e73f7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Westerfield, Paul W.","contributorId":30599,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westerfield","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206878,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Poynter, David T.","contributorId":8895,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Poynter","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206877,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
