These Phase 1 studies also included reconnaissance geophysical traverses of nine of the AEM conductors. In addition the AEM anomalies were classified on the basis of this reconnaissance work into a list of priority targets for use in economic studies, and six AEM anomalies were selected for further studies.</p>\n<p>During Phase 2 conducted in the 1979 field season, ground geophysical work consisting of electromagnetic (EM), self-potential (SP), and selected magnetic surveys were carried out in the six targets selected in the Phase 1 studies. These target areas in aggregate cover about 30 km 2, and are approximately half of the Wadi Bidah Class 1 and Class 2 priority targets found during the 1977 airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey of parts of the Arabian Shield.</p>\n<p>The results indicate possible extension of known reserves at the Rabathan area (AEM anomaly B-29), with possible potential for mineralization in the area extending 15-20 km north (anomaly B-13), where the geologic and geophysical environment is similar.</p>\n<p>An important observation is that mineralization in the B-29 (Rabathan) zone is coincident with narrow SP anomalies superimposed on the larger, broader, and more formational-type SP anomalies encountered in both areas B-29 and B-13.</p>\n<p>AEM anomaly B-25-26 areahas geophysical characteristics that show in the groundwork and that make it an attractive drill target. EM and SP anomalies are associated, in part, with magnetic anomalies and with exposures of significant limonitic gossan.</p>\n<p>Wadi al Khadra prospect, not included in the 1977 AEM survey, and the AEM anomaly B-25-26 area were also high-mineralization-potential products of the Phase 2 studies. Target area B-35 remains an unknown quantity, and AEM anomaly B-24 is almost certainly due to a carbonaceous schist.</p>\n<p>Geochemical results, along with detailed geologic mapping and the geophysical data, indicate several potential mineralized targets. The sulfide deposits occur together with barite, tuff, sandstone, shale, chert, and keratophyre flows and sills. The three main occurrences of the stratiform zinc-lead-barium deposits in the Red Dog Creek area are: (1) thinly-bedded stratiform sulfide minerals in organic-rich Mississippian shale and chert; (2) massive sulfide vein and breccia fillings in Mississippian shale; and (3) massive stratiform barite lenses and nodules in chert and shale of the Siksikpuk Formation. The Drenchwater Creek area has only the first type. Sulfide-bearing zones of up to several thousand meters long occur in both areas with up to 19.5 percent Zn, 9.5 percent Pb, and locally more than 150 ppm Ag. Radiolaria from sulfide-bearing chert indicate in the Red Dog Creek area a Mississippian age of sulfide deposition. K/Ar ages of 319 + 10 m.y. and 330 + 17 m.y. obtained from biotite in keratophyre associated with sulfide-bearing tuff and chert in the Drenchwater Creek area indicate a Mississippian age of sulfide deposition.</p><p>Sulfur isotope analyses of sulfur-bearing minerals from the Red Dog Creek area indicate that a combination of sea water sulfate and deep-seated sulfur was probably the source of the barite sulfate whereas sulfur in the sulfide minerals may have had a deep-seated source. Sulfur isotope values for sphalerite and galena are similar in vein and stratiform occurrences. Using sulfur isotope geothermetry, spalerite-galena pairs yield paleotemperatures of between 115° and 305° C. Lead isotope analyses of galena from both the Red Dog Creek and Drenchwater Creek areas yield Triassic model ages of approximately 200 m.y. Lead isotope data from both areas approximate typical orogene, i.e., Andean-type arc, or mature island-arc values and exclude ocean floor rifting for the generation of lead. The largest tract of the study area, located 13 mi southwest of Stearns, Ky., is accessible from that town via State Route 92 to Hill Top, and . then southwestwatd along country roads. Unimproved Forest Service roads, abandoned logging roads, and primitive trails provide access by foot or horseback into the interior of each tract of the study area.</p><p>Physiographically, the Troublesome Roadless Area is in the Cumberland Plateau section of the Appalachian Plateaus Province and is near the western edge of the Appalachian coal region. The topography is typical of the Cumberland Plateau section, characterized by irregular, narrow-crested ridges, deep narrow canyons, and a dendritic drainage pattern. Troublesome Creek, a small tributary of the South Fork of the Cumberland River, is the source of the area name (fig. 2). Altitudes range from about 1,600 ft on Laurel Ridge in the largest tract to approximately 800 ft along the South Fork of the Cumberland River.</p><p>Field investigations by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey consisted of reconnaissance geologic studies and data collecting, including the measurement of stratigraphic sections and the mapping of poorly exposed coal beds and resistant sandstone units. Twin Falls was selected because it is generally unaffected by factors that would complicate an analysis of the data. The study area was the Black Fork Valley at Twin Falls. The valley is about 3 miles long and 400 to 600 feet wide and is cut into massive sandstone units interbedded with thin coal and shale beds. The study was made to determine how aquifer characteristics were related to fracture systems in this valley, so that the relation could be applied to studies of other valleys. \r\n\r\nTwo sites were selected for test drilling, pumping tests, and geophysical studies. One site is in the upper part of the valley, and the second is near the lower central part. At both sites, ground water occurs mainly in horizontal bedding-plane fractures under the valley floor and in nearly vertical and horizontal slump fractures along the valley wall. The aquifer is under confined conditions under the valley floor and unconfined conditions along the valley wall. The fractures pinch out under the valley walls, which form impermeable barriers. Tests of wells near the valley center indicated a change in storage coefficient as the cone of depression caused by pumping reached the confined-unconfined boundaries; the tests also indicated barrier-image effects when the cone reached the impermeable boundaries. Drawdown from pumping near the center of the valley affected water levels at both sites, indicating a hydraulic connection from the upper to the lower end of the valley. Stream gain-and-loss studies show that ground water discharges to the stream from horizontal fractures beneath Black Fork Falls, near the mouth of Black Fork. The fracture systems that constitute most of the transmissive part of the aquifer at Twin Falls are like those described as being formed from stress relief. Major sources of frustration have been the difficulty of keeping up with the required analysis, and the difficulties of sharing a wide variety of data and computer programs among several hundred researchers at dozens of institutions located throughout the U.S. A major effort is underway to create a similar computer environment running on many PDP 11/70 minicomputers located across the country that encourages widespread sharing of data and \"software tools\" without impeding the free flow of creative ideas in this research program. Large libraries of high-level tools are provided in a well documented manner. The tools can be readily combined into programs using a new interactive language, any compiled language, or, in many cases, the Shell command language of the UNIX** Timesharing System. New tools are easily written by any user. Major system tools provided include advanced general plotting programs and a relational indexed database. Mean indexes on rangeland soils range from 0 grams (of detached soil) on dune soil to 121 grams on wash-transport zones. Mean field-erodibility-index values of soils disturbed by mining range from 16 to 32 grams; they can be extrapolted to nearby coal fields where future mining is expected. Because field-erodibility-index data allow differentiation of erodibilities across a variable landscape, these indexes were used to adjust values of K, the erodibility factor of the Universal Soil Loss Equation. Estimates of soil loss and sediment yield were then calculated for a small basin following mining. Daily mean water-level fluctuations and trends are shown in hydrographs for the previous year and fluctuations of the monthly mean water level are shown for the previous 10 years in selected observation wells in Georgia. Monitoring ground-water levels is essential to the understanding of storage changes in a ground-water reservoir or aquifer. Fluctuations and long-term trends in water levels occur as a result of recharge to and discharge from the reservoir. Mean annual water levels across Georgia were from 1.92 feet higher to 12.61 feet lower in 1980 than in 1979, and in some areas were the lowest on record. These rocks vary in metamorphic grade from those below the chloritoid zone through the chloritoid and garnet zones into the kyanite-staurolite zone. Microprobe data on the ferromagnesian minerals show that the sequence of increasing Fe/ (Fe+Mg) value is, from the lowest, chlorite, biotite, hornblende, chloritoid, staurolite, garnet. Hornblende, epidote, garnet, and plagioclase are the most common minerals that carry significant calcium. Biotite is persistently deficient in alkali but is abnormally rich in octahedral aluminum to such an extent that the overall charge balance can be ascribed to an AI=K+ (Fe,Mg) diadochy. Muscovite contains small though persistent amounts of iron and magnesium in octahedral positions but has a variable K/Na ratio, which is potentially useful as a geothermometer. One low-grade muscovite is highly phengitic, but the white micas in rocks from metamorphic grades higher than chloritoid zone do not contain significant phengite components. Chlorite is persistently high in aluminum and so its ratio of divalent ions to aluminum is approximately that of garnet. Many garnets show pronounced zoning in manganese and less pronounced zoning in calcium. Garnet coexisting with hornblende contains a high proportion of the grossularitic component. The calcium content is significant in all the analyzed garnets, except those from a cummingtonite-bearing sample that is free of muscovite. This suggests that in slightly calcic pelitic rocks, calcium-free garnet cannot coexist with muscovite. \r\n\r\nMost of the mineral assemblages formed in the presence of excess quartz and muscovite. The phase-petrologic analysis, made with the aid of an eight-phase multisystematic model, shows the following major points: \r\n\r\n1. Chloritoid and staurolite coexist in a definite interval of prograde metamorphism. \r\n\r\n2. Biotite-chloritoid does not constitute an alternative assemblage to garnet-chlorite-muscovite, because the former combination is found predominantly in the presence of the latter combination. Because the garnet contains lime, all five phases are stable together in lowlime pelitic rocks. \r\n\r\n3. The first appearance of staurolite in the area does not correspond to the reaction leading to the first intrinsic stable existence of this phase. Inasmuch as the first appearanc,e of staurolite is always in chlorite-bearing as semblages, I suggest that the mapped staurolite zone marker corresponds to a reaction whereby staurolitechlorite becomes stable. The probable lower grade chemical equivalent, for example, chloritoid-aluminum silicate, however, has not been found in the area of study. Several staurolite-forming reactions discussed in the literature are ruled out because of the relative siderophility of the minerals. A second staurolite isograd involves the reaction, chloritoid+chlorite+muscovite= staurolite+biotite. A third isograd involves staurolite+ chlorite=biotite+kyanite; this reaction is postulated on the basis of the observed assemblage biotite-kyanitesta urolite-garnet-muscoviteplagioclase-quartzilmenite. \r\n\r\n4. In low-grade rocks, epidote is stable considerably before the first appearance of chloritoid. The nature of the high-aluminum phase in low-grade rocks that leads to the formation of chloritoid remains obscure. The epidote is always rich in ferric iron (pistacite content of about 1/ 4 to 1/3). Garnet-bearing assemblages (with or without epidote) are formed next as metamorphic grade increases. The next more calcium-rich silicate is hornblende, and despite the meager data on assemblages that include hornblende, the first intrinsic appearance of this phase has probably been recorded. Data that would fill voids left by previous studies are depth to bedrock and depth to good-quality water beneath the two playas in the valley. Depths to bedrock calculated from a gravity survey in Lemmon Valley indicate that the western part of Lemmon Valley is considerably deeper than the eastern part. Maximum depth in the western part is about 2 ,600 feet below land surface. This depression approximately underlies the Silver Lake playa. A smaller, shallower depression with a maximum depth of about 1,500 feet below land surface exists about 2.5 miles north of the playa. The eastern area is considerably shallower. The maximum calculated depth to bedrock is about 1,000 feet below land surface, but the depth throughout most the eastern area is only about 400 feet below land surface. An electrical resistivity survey in Lemmon Valley consisting of 10 Schlumberger soundings was conducted around the playas. The maximum depth of poor-quality water (characterized by a resistivity less than 20 ohm-meters) differed considerably from place to place. Maximum depths of poor-quality water beneath the playa east of Stead varied from about 120 feet to almost 570 feet below land surface. At the Silver Lake playa, the maximum depths varied from about 40 feet in the west to 490 feet in the east.
