Water-resources data for the 1980 water year for Washington consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage, contents, and water quality of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality of ground-wells. This report, in two volumes, contains records for water discharge at 233 gaging stations; stage only at 5 gaging stations; stage and contents at 41 lakes and reservoirs; water quality at 39 gaging stations (including 6 lakes and reservoirs) and 100 wells; and water levels at 164 observation wells. Also included are data for 14 crest-stage and 89 water-quality partial-record stations. Locations of sites in this volume are on figures 4, 5, 6, and 22. Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. These data represent that part of the national Water Data system operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, local, and Federal agencies in Washington.

This area includes the U.S. eastern continental margin from the mouth of Chesapeake Bay to approximately Cape Canaveral, Florida, including the upper Continental Slope and inner Blake Plateau. The area for possible sales and the previous areas leased are shown in figure 1; physiographic features of the region are shown in figure 2.
Six exploration wells have been drilled within the proposed lease area (figs. 3 and 4) but no commercial discoveries have been made. All six wells were drilled on the Continental Shelf in the Southeast Georgia Embayment. No commercial production has been obtained onshore in the region. The areas already drilled have thin sedimentary sections, and the deeper rocks are dominantly continental facies. Petroleum formation may have been hindered by a lack of organic material and sufficient burial for thermal maturation. Analysis of drill and seismic profiling data presented here, however, indicates that a much thicker sedimentary rock section containing a much higher proportion of marine deposits exists seaward of the exploratory wells on the Continental Shelf. These geologic conditions imply that the offshore basins may be more favorable environments for generating petroleum.

Most of the principal taxonomic soil types that occur in each county are represented by the 10 samples per county that were collected. There are numerous examples of soils that were developed from each of the several parent-material types in the State.
Each soil sample is a composite of several channel samples collected throughout a field from a depth 0-15cm. Soil material that passed a 2mm sieve was ground in a ceramic mill to -100 mesh and then analyzed for total concentrations of 70 elements. The methods of analysis and the lower limits of determination for each element are given in table 1. Most methods were described by Miesch (1976); delayed neutron counting for uranium and thorium was described by Millard (1976). The limits of determination for the methods did not always encompass the natural range of element concentrations in some samples, thus the elements may be classed into three groups: never detected, rarely detected, and frequently detected.

Such structure can be described by a semi-variogram of the observed data. The kriging estimate at any point is a weighted average of the data, where the weights are determined using the semi-variogram and an assumed drift, or lack of drift, in the data. Block, or areal, estimates can also be calculated. The kriging algorithm, based on unbiased and minimum-variance estimates, involves a linear system of equations to calculate the weights. Kriging variances can then be used to give confidence intervals of the resulting estimates. Mean annual precipitation in the Powder River basin, Montana and Wyoming, is an important variable when considering restoration of coal-strip-mining lands of the region. Two kriging analyses involving data at 60 stations were made--one assuming no drift in precipitation, and one a partial quadratic drift simulating orographic effects. Contour maps of estimates of mean annual precipitation were similar for both analyses, as were the corresponding contours of kriging variances. Block estimates of mean annual precipitation were made for two subbasins. Runoff estimates were 1-2 percent of the kriged block estimates. The proposed network , consisting of 92 wells, is designed to monitor changes in storage and quality of ground water resulting from climatic changes and management-induced stresses. In the proposed network , water levels in all wells would be measured semiannually, in April and September, and monthly in a few key wells. The water-level measurements would provide data that could be used to determine changes in ground-water storage. In addition to the currently monitored characteristics--temperature, specific conductance, pH, and chloride ion concentration--inclusion of annual sampling and analysis for major ions and nutrients is proposed. The network would also include sampling and analysis for trace elements once every 4 years. More frequent analyses are proposed in areas where water-quality problems are known to exist or where potential water-quality problems are recognized. Analyses for major ions, nutrients, and trace elements are included in the proposed network to provide baseline data for monitoring long-term changes in water quality and to detect any unexpected changes in quality. An expedient and economical method of air lifting water samples from isolated water-producing zones while drilling was utilized. Lithologic logs of drill cuttings and geophysical logs, including point resistance and spontaneous potential electric logs, gamma-ray logs, and caliper logs, were made. Chemical quality of water was determined for principal producing zones at each well. Dissolved solids from composite water samples ranged from 313 milligrams per liter in test well 0-1 north of the well field to 728 milligrams per liter in test well 0-3 within the well field. Each test well was pumped to determine maximum discharge, water-level drawdown, and recovery time. A leaking pump column on test well 0-1 prevented accurate measurement of drawdown on the well. Test well 0-2, located east of the well field, had a pumping rate of 376 gallons per minute and 13.11 feet of drawdown after 3 hours and 50 minutes; test well 0-3 had a maximum yield of 320 gallons per minute, a drawdown of 31.91 feet after 2 hours and 35 minutes of pumping, had a recovery time of 20 minutes; and test well 0-4, south of the well field, had a pumping rate of 200 gallons per minute with 63.34 feet of drawdown after 2 hours and 35 minutes. Because of the available water-level control and the rough terrain throughout the area, the delineation of the water table was limited to 20-foot contour intervals. On the basis of recent river-stage and precipitation records, this delineation should represent near or slightly below average conditions.
\nIn addition to the alluvium, several other geologic formations crop out in the areas. These formations are capable of producing small to large quantities of water to wells, but the current (1981) pumping demand is small. The pressure heads in each of these formations appear to be in continuity, and the contours indicate that no barriers restrict ground-water movement from one formation to another. Several water-producing horizons may be present at many locations. The water-table map was constructed by using the head in the horizon that is nearest the land surface. The configuration of the water table closely approximates the topography. The water table slopes from the highland areas toward the Colorado River and small creeks.
\nThe delineation of the water table in the alluvium of the Colorado River is fairly well defined, and 10-feet contour intervals may be interpreted with confidence in the area called ' potential lignite-mining area. ' The water table in the bedrock aquifers is more difficult to delineate with the available data; therefore, the contours are only estimates of the position of the water table in the hilly bedrock area adjacent to the Colorado River alluvium.

The data include continuous streamflow at four sites, monthly stream water quality at seven sites, ground-water levels and periodic ground-water quality in four wells from 1972 through 1978.
Pumpage from the Cohansey Sand in the study area was lower than anticipated because of a slowdown in construction. The average pumpage of 0.48 million gallons per day during 1978 had little effect on ground-water levels.
Dissolved-solids concentrations were lower in a well upgradient from the urbanized area. Elevated levels of dissolved solids, specific conductance, chloride, nitrate, and phosphorus were found in the shallow ground water in the vicinity of the Winslow wastewater treatment plant because of effluent infiltration ponds. Nitrate was greatly reduced in October 1974 by a change in the treatment process, which increased denitrification. Phosphorus concentrations in the ground water remained elevated, however.
Water from the most urbanized drainage basin was a magnesium bicarbonate type, while the less developed basins had sodium chloride sulfate type waters. Water from the two developed basins had higher median pH (7.1) compared with that of the other basins (5.6-6.3).
Winslow Crossing’s development had only a slight effect on the quality of water in Great Egg Harbor River. The river receives point and non-point discharges upstream from Winslow Crossing, and the quality of the water generally improves as the river flows downstream.
Streamflow and rainfall were slightly above normal. Unit hydrograph analysis of one basin showed an 80 percent increase in the peak discharge of a 60-minute unit hydrograph (from approximately 150 to 270 cubic feet per second) after the development of 14 percent of the basin. Installation of a stormwater detention basin reduced the peak discharge to 220 ft3/s. Sediment discharge from this basin averaged 0.24 tons/d/mi2 during construction but decreased to the preconstruction level of 0.06 tons/d/mi2 after the completion of construction and the installation of the detention basin.

One survey (west park of the map_ centered over the Mokelumne Wilderness was flowing in a northeast-southwest direction along slight lines spaced at a horizontal interval of about 800 m (U>S> Geological Survey, 1979b). The survey to the east is part of a regional survey flown in an east-west direction along flight lines spaced at an interval of about 1,600 m (U.S. Geological Survey, 1979a). The join of the aeromagnetic contours along the border between the two surveys is generally conformable. The contour datum of the eastern regional survey, however, is about 650 nT (nanotesla) lower than the Mokelumne Wilderness survey because of difference in data reduction.
\nThe aeromagnetic pattern reflects variations of magnetization within the underlying rocks, but the pattern is complicated by strong topographic effects. That is, magnetic anomaly maxima tend to occur over ridges and hilltops and minima over canyons and depressions. The topographic effect exists mostly because a constant ground clearance could not be maintained at normal aircraft speeds in this area of rugged topographic relief. The recorded flight altitude varied from 30 m to nearly 1,500 m above the ground with local changes that approard 1,000 m in distances of less than 5,000 m.
\nFour magnetic anomalies that can be related to geologic features are discusses., Magnetic highs or lows cause by topography are not discussed.

This catalog contains the fundamental parameters for earthquakes located within and adjacent to the seismograph network operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), during the third quarter of 1977.
The motivation for these detailed studies has been described by Pakiser and others (1969) and by Eaton and others (1970). Similar catalogs of earthquakes for the years 1969, 1970, and 1971 have been prepared by Lee and others (1972b, c and d). Catalogs for the first, second, third, and fourth quarters of 1972 and the first, second, third and fourth quarters of 1973 have been prepared by Wesson and others (1972a, b, 1973b, and 1974a and b), by Bufe and others (1975), and by Lester and others (1976a and b). Catalogs for the years 1974, 1975 and 1976 and the first quarter of 1977 have been prepared by Lester and Meagher (1978), by McHugh and Lester (1978 and 1979) and by Marks and Lester (1980a and 1980b). The basic data contained in these catalogs provide a foundation for further studies.
This catalog contains data on 855 earthquakes in central California. Arrival times at 205 seismograph stations were used to locate the earthquakes listed in this catalog. Of these 193 were telemetered stations operated by USGS. Readings from the remaining 12 stations were obtained through the courtesy of the Seismographic Stations, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, University of California, Berkeley (UCB), and the California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento.
The Seismographic Station of the University of California, Berkeley, has for many years published a bulletin describing earthquakes in northern California and the surrounding area and listing readings at UCB stations from more distant events. The purpose of the present catalog is not to replace the UCB Bulletin, but rather to supplement it, by describing the seismicity of a portion of central California in much greater detail.

Most of the sites were selected on the basis of carefully developed concepts of groundwater occurrence. These wells range from 20 to 400 feet deep and average 276 feet deep. The yields range from 0 to 300 gal/min and average 69 gal/min, with 6 wells yielding more than 100 gal/min. The water-bearing zones in rock that yield more than 50 gal/min are all between 100 and 200 feet below land surface. Sulfur gas was detected in two of the wells and large concentrations of iron were present in other wells. Capacity tests were conducted on those wells which yield more than 100 gal/min. The specific capacities of these wells range from 1.36 to 8.11 and average 3.46 gal/min for each foot of drawdown.
