Reach A included 7.8 miles of the East Branch Sebasticook River from Dexter to Corinna, Maine. Reach B included 8 miles of the East Branch Sebasticook River from Newport to its mouth, and 1 mile of the Sebasticook River to Peltoma bridge near Pittsfield, Maine. Reach C included 3.5 miles of the Sebasticook River from Hartland to West Palmyra, Maine. Reach D included 31.4 miles of the Sebasticook River from Pittsfield to Winslow, Maine. Using a 20-percent solution of rhodamine WT fluorescent dye, three dye-tracer type time-of-travel study runs were made in each reach. Water samples were collected at 10 sites in the study area. The samples were then analyzed for dye concentrations.</p><p>Time-of-travel data for each subreach are depicted in a series of illustrations and summarized in tabular form. In all, 18.5 kilometers of high-resolution seismic profiles and sidescan-sonar data were obtained.</p><p>The systems used included an 80-J minisparker and an EPC-32001 recorder and an EDO Western sidescan system. The navigation was by Northstar LORAN-C and by buoy-to-buoy dead reckoning within Duxbury Harbor.</p><p>The original records may be viewed at the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The State was divided into eight regions and separate multiple-regression equations for each region were developed that relate logarithms of annual flood magnitude to logarithms of basin characteristics for exceedance probabilities of 50, 20, 10, 4, 2, and 1 percent. The standard errors of estimate for an exceedance probability of 1 percent ranged from 39 to 58 percent in the western and central parts of the State and from 47 to 83 percent in the eastern part. The standard errors of estimate indicate a substantial improvement over previous studies. Techniques for transferring annual flood-frequency information at gaged sites to ungaged sites on the same stream have been updated. Included are curves relating flood-frequency information to drainage area for eight major streams in the State. Maximum known flood peaks in Montana are compared with estimated 1-percent-chance flood peaks and with national maximum known flood peaks. Values of flood discharges for selected exceedance probabilities and values of significant basin characteristics for all gaging stations used in the analysis are tabulated. Included are data for 339 stations in Montana and 34 nearby stations in Canada and adjoining States. The program was used to inventory 2,000 small watersheds in Sumter National Forest, South Carolina during 1980 and 1981. Drainage basins and stream segments were delineated in color on mylar overlays over U.S. Geological Survey 1:24 ,000-scale maps. Drainage basin characteristics were quantified and stored on eight-inch diskettes. The program can produce printouts and plots that summarize geomorphic data for each watershed. The program is adaptable to other locations. These studies are now in progress in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year.</p><p>The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. The Panel Report (Bolt, 1980) addresses both the need and the scientific requirements for the new national network. The purpose of this study has been to translate the scientific requirements into an instrumentation concept for the NSDS. </p><p>There are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands, of seismographs in operation within the United States. Each serves an important purpose, but most have limited objectives in time, in region, or in the types of data that are being recorded. The concept of a national network, funded and operated by the Federal Government, is based on broader objectives that include continuity of time, uniform coverage, standardization of data format and instruments, and widespread use of the data for a variety of research purposes. A national digital seismograph network will be an important data resource for many years to come; hence, its design is likely to be of interest to most seismologists. </p><p>Seismologists have traditionally been involved in the development and field operation of seismic systems and thus have been familiar with both the potential value and the limitations of the data. However, in recent years of increasing technological sophistication, the development of data sstems has fallen more to system engineers, and this trend is likely to continue. One danger in this is that the engineers may misinterpret scientific objectives or subordinate them to purely technological considerations. Another risk is that the data users may misuse or misinterpret the data because they are not aware of the limitations of the data system. Perhaps the most important purpose of a design study such as this is to stimulate a dialogue between system engineers and potential data users. </p><p>The NDSN system concept presented in this report is intended to serve as a point of discussion -- a strawman, if you will. It is a feasible solution to what we perceive to be the objectives of the NDSN, but it is not a unique solution. Current technology offers a variety of choices in meeting design objectives. We have examined some but not all of these choices. Although our fundamental concept of the NDSN is based on current technology, we have anticipated developments in several fields where state-of-the-art is evolving rapidly, notably satellite communications and database management. If the installation of the NDSN is delayed 5 - 10 years, we anticipate that the methods proposed to record, communicate, and manage the data may change, but it is likely that the fundamental data requirements will be the same. Therefore, in this study we have concentrated more on the types of data that will be generated at the NDSN stations and less on specific hardware that might be used in the data system. As part of this effort the U.S. Geological Survey research vessel, R/V SEA SOUNDER, conducted two cruises in 1978 and one cruise in 1979 (Table 1). A number of stations were occupied for various periods of time (Fig. 1) during which tidal current speed and direction data was recorded. One of the most obvious forms of this interaction is the formation of furrow-like gouges or the sea floor. These gouges are caused by wind- and current-driven ice masses that rake the seabed with their keels. Since the advent of side-scanning sonar about 1970, the morphology and character of these seabed features have been under study. Two studies were made on the upper Willamette River and one was made on the Santiam River, a Willamette River tributary. Nitrification, occurring in both the upper Willamette and South Santiam Rivers, accounted for about 62% and 92% of the DO sag in the rivers, respectively. Rates of nitrification were found to be dependent on ammonia concentrations in the rivers. Periphyton and phytoplankton algal samples were collected on the main stem Willamette River and selected tributaries during August 1978. Diatoms were the dominant group in both the periphyton and phytoplankton samples. The most common diatom genera were Melosira, Stephanodiscus, Cymbella, Achnanthes, and Nitzschia. Comparisons with historical data indicate no significant difference from previous years in the total abundance or diversity of the algae. The probability of spill occurrences, likely movement of oil slicks, and locations of resources vulnerable to spilled oil were analyzed. The model predicted movement of the center of spill mass and estimated the times between spill occurrence and contact with various resources, to allow a qualitative assessment of oil characteristics at the time of contact; no direct computation was made of weathering and cleanup. The model also assumed that any oil spilled under ice would remain in place, unchanged, until spring breakup. Ice movements, or travel of oil under ice, if occurring, would affect the results in a manner not directly predictable at this time. The combined results of spill occurrence and spill movement predictions yielded estimates of the overall risks associated with development of the proposed lease area. Assuming that oil exists in the lease area (a 99.3-percent chance) it is estimated that the leasing of the tracts proposed for OCS Sale 71 will result in an expected 9.2 oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger) over the lease lifetime of 25 years. This estimate is based on historic oilspill accident data for platforms and pipelines on the U.S. OCS (Gulf of Mexico and California). The estimated probability that land will be contacted by one or more oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger) that have been at sea less than 30 days (not counting any time trapped under ice) is greater than 99.5 percent. If oilspill accident data for Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, is used in the analysis, it is estimated that 5.6 oilspills (1,000 barrels or larger) will occur over the lease lifetime. The estimated probability that one or more oilspills (1,000 barrels or larger)will occur and contact land is99 percent. The results of a recent experimental cleanup operation for oilspills under ice in Canadian Arctic waters showed a substantial degree of success; this should be considered in evaluating impacts of spills predicted by this model.
