The occurrence of this lignite has been known for many decades, but not until the energy crisis was it considered an important energy resource. In recent years, several energy companies have conducted extensive exploration programs in western Tennessee, and tremendous reserves of lignite have been found.\r\n\r\nFrom available information, Lauderdale County was selected as one of the counties where strip-mining of lignite will most likely occur. Lignite in this county occurs in the Jackson and Cockfield Formations, undivided, of Tertiary age. The hydrology of the county is known only from regional studies and the collection of some site-specific data. Therefore, in anticipation of the future mining of lignite, a plan is needed for obtaining hydrologic and geologic information to adequately define the hydrologic system before mining begins and to monitor the effects of strip-mining once it is begun.\r\n\r\nFor this planning effort, available hydrologic, geologic, land use, and associated data were located and compiled; a summary description of the surface and shallow subsurface hydrologic system was prepared: the need for additional baseline hydrologic information was outlined; and plans to monitor the effects of strip-mining were proposed. The material is presented in a format which may serve as a guide for subsequent permit applications. Data on the quality and quantity of surface water and ground water for the mine plan, adjacent, and general areas are presented. The data are presented in three general categories: measured and estimated current conditions, estimated annual variations, and predicted effects of mining and reclamation. Current surface-water, ground-water, and biological conditions are the easiest to define. Seasonal variations in surface-water flow can be estimated with some confidence, but seasonal variations in surface-water quality, biological quality, and ground-water levels and quality are difficult to estimate with the insufficient field data available. The sites are generally either U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations or the mouths of gaged streas. Each site is identified by latitude and longitude, by the general stream type, and by the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute topographic map on which it can be located. The gaging stations are furhter identified by a downstream order number, a county code, and a nearby city or town. In addition to drainage areas, the surface areas of lakes are shown for the elevation given on the topographic map. These data were retrieved from the Surface Water Index developed and maintained by the Hydrologic Surveillance section of the Florida District Office, U.S. Geological Survey. About one-half of this water was used to artificially recharge the Upper Penitencia Creek alluvial fan in Santa Clara Valley. In order to determine the relative amounts of local ground water and recharged imported water being pumped from the wells, stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen were used to trace the movement of the imported water in the alluvial fan. To trace the movement of imported water in the Upper Penitencia Creek alluvial fan, well samples were selected to give areal and depth coverage for the whole fan. The stable isotopes of oxygen-16, oxygen-18, and deuterium were measured in the water samples of imported water and from the wells and streams in the Santa Clara Valley. The d18oand dD compositions of the local runoff were about -6.00 o/oo (parts per thousand) and -40 o/oo, respectively; the average compositions for the local native ground-water samples were about -6.1 o/oo and -41 o/oo, respectively; and the average compositions of the imported water samples were -10.2 o/oo and -74 o/oo, respectively. (The oxygen isotopic composition of water samples is reported relative to Standard Mean Ocean Water, in parts per thousand.) The difference between local ground water and recharged imported water was about 4.1 o/oo in d18o and 33 o/oo in dL.\r\n\r\nThe isotopic data indicate dilution of northern California water with local ground water in a downgradient direction. Two wells contain approximately 74 percent northern California water, six wells more than 50 percent. These data can be used in making rational decisions in formulating effective flood-plain regulations that would minimize flood problems in the Tallaboa Valley.</p><p>The Tallaboa Valley (fig. 1) lies on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico about 12 km (7.5 mi) west of the city of Ponce. The climate is semiarid with a mean annual precipitation of about 1,020 mm (40 in). It is a relatively small valley which until the late fifties was dedicated mainly to the product ion of sugarcane. Since then, the economy started changing from agriculture to industry. At present the lower part of the valley is completely industrialized. The upper part of the valley is used for agriculture--mostly as pastureland. The reach from Highway 132 downstream to the new Highway 2 is mainly agricultural with a few scattered communities. The lower part of the valley that includes the area from the Highway 2 bridge to the mouth is covered with heavy industry concerned with the refinement of oil, and associated industries.</p><p>The continuous growth of industry and consequently of the urban area of Peñuelas has encouraged growth onto the<br>flood plain. The study area is subject to flooding by the Rio Tallaboa and the Rio Guayanes, its main tributary. The Rio Guayanes is the- cause of flooding in the urban area of Penuelas, encompassing the reach from the northern edge of town downstream to Highway 132 where it joins the Rio Tallaboa.</p><p>Data are generally referred to in SI (International System) units followed&nbsp;by corresponding inch-pound units in parentheses. Of 96 stations with available data, 53 stations or 55 percent were considered to have sufficient data for analysis. The classification of water type was based on the relation of the major ions: calcium, magnesium, sodium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, and chloride to each other within the range of measured specific conductance. The suitability of the water for use as a public supply was based on the concentration distribution of selected constituents. The constituents selected were those with maximum contaminant levels established by regulation, or constituents for which recommended maximum limits have been established and for which historic data are available. The irrigation-classification method of Wilcox was used to relate sodium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations and the salinity distribution to the use of the water for irrigation. The river is about 29.3 miles long, and drains an area of about 354 square miles at its mouth.</p><p>Traveltimes were determined by tracing the movement of rhodamine WI, a soluble fluorescent dye. The dye was injected into the river at the upstream end of each reach studied and water samples were collected at the downstream end of the study reach and analyzed for dye concentrations.</p><p>Time-of-travel data were related to stream discharge to estimate traveltime for a water-soluble contaminant traveling between any two points at any discharge in the low-to-high flow range.</p><p>The discharges of the Little Androscoggin River at the time of the study ranged from 40 to 950 cubic feet per second at the Auburn gaging station. This information was used to con</span><span>struct and calibrate a five-layer, digital ground-water flow model. The mod</span><span>el, constructed and calibrated to ground-water-level and seepage data col</span><span>lected during the study, simulates conditions for the autumn of 1976. The </span><span>model was used to provide estimates of ground-water potential in terms of </span><span>yield, drawdown, and depletion in streamflow. </span></p><p><span>Glacial drift covers nearly the entire study area and ranges in thickness from 0 to approximately 300 feet. Beneath the drift lie Ordovician to Devonian limestone, dolomite, and shale. A bedrock valley trends west-northwest through the center of the study area. Relief of the bedrock surface is approximately 325 feet. </span></p><p><span>Four confined sand and gravel aquifers interbedded in the glacial drift, a bedrock aquifer, and an unconfined outwash aquifer are the three most important aquifer systems in the study area. The nearly horizontal, areally discontinuous, confined sand and gravel aquifers have an average thickness of about 15 feet and an average hydraulic conductivity estimated to be 433 feet per day. The bedrock aquifer underlying the entire study area has a thick-ness estimated to be 150 feet and an average transmissivity estimated in previous studies in the basin to be 1,340 square feet per day. The unconfined outwash aquifer, although thin and narrow, is an important aquifer because of its proximity to sources of induced recharge.</span></p><p><span>Water-level fluctuations in observation wells in the basin indicate that </span><span>the ground-water system is in dynamic equilibrium. Ground-water seepage to </span><span>streams at 90-percent flow duration on October 1, 1976, was estimated to be </span><span>between 15.9 and 74.4 cubic feet per second. Ground-water pumpage for 1976 </span><span>was estimated to be 19.7 million gallons per day (30.5 cubic feet per </span><span>second). The water budget, as simulated in the model, indicates that the </span><span>rate of inflow to the ground-water system in the modeled area is 92.4 cubic </span><span>feet per second. Of this, 78 percent is from effective areal recharge of </span><span>precipitation, and 22 percent is from ground-water flow across the boundaries into the study area. Thirty-three percent of the ground-water outflow is pumpage, 59 percent is seepage to streams, and the remaining 8 percent is ground-water flow across the boundaries out of the study area. </span></p><p><span>Model simulations of eight pumping plans provide a general assessment of the water-yielding potential of the three major aquifer systems and indicate that as much as 2.5 million gallons per day can be obtained from well fields about half a square mile in area. Model results also indicate that, for as much as 2.5-million gallons per day pumping, flow in the large streams will not be significantly affected, whereas flow in the small streams may be significantly affected. In addition, simulations indicate that adding more wells to the well field northwest of Anderson, Ind., would probably be no more advantageous than increasing the pumpage in the existing wells. How-ever, well interference, well hydraulics, and pumping-level constraints were not considered in the investigation of alternative methods of expanding the well field.
