Investigators from several different organizations were in the field shortly after the earthquake recording aftershocks and checking intensities. The data from postal intensity surveys and field personnel are still coming in, and it will be some time before it is all evaluated and analyzed. This preliminary list of the results of our own field investigations is being produced now in order that the information we gathered may be combined with that of other researchers for analysis.</p><p>Our investigation, conducted from July 28 to August 3, was designed to delineate the areal distribution of the intensities and to document the amount and type of damage in the epicentral region. Tentative intensities have been assigned to these reports and they have been plotted in figure 1. However, as more information becomes available from other investigators, some of these values may be changed and other locations may be added. Therefore no attempt has been made to contour the data. A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was assigned to Maysville, Ky., approximately 50 km north of the epicenter, based on the concentrated chimney and other types of building damage there. These structures, known collectively as \"salt domes,\" are almost exclusively features of the terrigenous elastic margins of the northern and southwestern Gulf and the central Sigsbee Plain (sht. 2, A). Some salt structures may be present in the East Mexico Slope province of the western gulf, but they are difficult to distinguish from diapiric and nondiapiric shale anticlines, which are the dominant structures on this margin. Except for some piercement domes and nonpiercement uplifts in the northern Florida shelf region and in the eastern Golfo de Campeche, salt structures are not known in the extensive carbonate platform provinces off western Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula. The area surveyed is located in the western San Juan Mountains near Lake City, Colorado. The general area covered is between 37°45' and 38° latitude north and 107°15' and 107°35' longitude west. The survey flying was confined to nine valleys which surround the Lake City caldera. Four blocks were surveyed from October 22 to October 27, 1979 for a total of 535 line - kilometers. The survey was flown as part of a mineral appraisal study conducted in cooperation with Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The survey was done to detect massive mineralization, mainly copper, and to locate conductive faults that may be suitable sites for uranium mineralization.</p><p>To be useful, airborne electromagnetic measurements must be made within a few hundred feet of the surface. The area that was flown is so rugged that a helicopter rather than a fixed-wing aircraft was used.</p><p>Fraser and Dvorak summarize the data of the survey areas as follows: in the east and south, the ground resistivities varied over a broad range—, from 20 to 1000 ohm-m. The western and northern parts of the area were characterized by resistivities mostly in the 300 to 1000 ohm-m range. In general, the older pictures show an absence of riparian plants along the banks of the river. The newer photographs of each pair were taken in 1972 through 1976 and reveal an increased density of many plant species. Exotic species, such as saltcedar and camel-thorn, and native riparian plants such as sandbar willow, arrowweed, desert broom and cattail, now form a new riparian community along much of the channel of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead. The matched photographs also reveal that changes have occurred in the amount of sand and silt deposited along the banks. Detailed maps are presented showing distribution of 25 plant species along the reach of the Colorado River studied. The known length of the fault is 452 km, extending northward from Steamboat Mountain to a point 225 km into Canada, where the fault also dies out in Paleozoic rocks. \r\n\r\nAt the south end, the surface expression of the Lewis thrust begins in a shear zone in folded Mississippian rocks. To the north, the thrust progressively cuts downsection into Proterozoic Y (Belt) rocks near Glacier National Park. \r\n\r\nDisplacement on the Lewis plate increases northward from approximately 3 km on an easterly trending hinge line at the West Fork of the Sun River to a postulated 65 km at the southern edge of the park, where the stratigraphic throw is about 6,500 m. Present data indicate the thrust formed during very late Paleocene to very early Eocene time. \r\n\r\nThe Lewis thrust and related structures, the Hoadley thrust and the Continental Divide syncline, probably formed concurrently under the same stress field. The northern limit of the trace of the Hoadley thrust is within the lower portion of the Lewis plate, about 28 km north of where the Lewis thrust develops, and the Hoadley extends for at least 125 km to the south. Displacement of the Hoadley increases southward from about 1 km at the hinge line to an inferred 70 km near its known southern extent. If our inference is correct, the Hoadley is nearly the southern mirror image of the Lewis to the north. The Continental Divide syncline, a doubly plunging, broad, northerly trending open fold that is about 120 km long, is a major fold within the Lewis plate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. In order to ascertain the viability of a proposed waste isolation site, it is necessary to study its geology without extensive drilling that might destroy its structural integrity. Hole-to-surface and hole-to-hole geophysical measurements can be useful in supplementing geologic data obtained from a few drill holes and can be used to aid the interpretation of surface geophysical measurements. The study presented in this paper was conducted at Salt Valley, Utah to test the feasibility of using hole-to-surface direct-current resistivity measurements to detect geologic inhomogeneities in evaporites. These measurements show the following:<br>(1) It is feasible to make hole-to-surface resistivity measurements over evaporites. However, near-surface steel casing can make it difficult to quantitatively analyze the field data with present interpretation techniques. This report describes the physical setting, climate, coal-mining practices, general hydrologic system, and the current (1980) hydrologie data base in these two coal-mining regions. Streamflow in both mining regions is poorly sustained. Stream water quality generally varies with location and the magnitude of coal-mining activity in a watershed. Streams in non coal-mining areas generally have dissolved-solids concentrations less than 400 milligrams per liter. Acid-mine drainage has seriously affected some streams by reducing the pH to less than 4.0 and increasing the dissolved-solids concentrations to greater than 1,000 milligrams per liter. This has resulted in fish kills in some instances. Ground-water movement is impeded both laterally and vertically in both mining regions, especially in western Missouri, because of the low hydraulic conductivity of the rocks of Pennsylvanian age. The quality of ground water varies widely depending on location and depth. Parts of the area have undergone rapid population growth in recent years due to an increase of winter sports activities. This rapid growth has resulted in a demand for additional domestic, recreational, and municipal water supplies. Maximum yields of 100 gallons per minute are available from wells completed in the alluvial aquifers while as much as 60 gallons per minute may be obtained from wells completed in the Dakota and Entrada Sandstones. Yields from other aquifers generally are less than 25 gallons per minute. Calcium magnesium bicarbonate water is the predominant water type in the study area. Dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 30 to 829 milligrams per liter and hardness ranged from 18 to 400 milligrams per liter.
